The Oscar-winning screenwriter says he has always been gay, but is only now going public. At 81, he reflects on LSD, gurus and falling out with Whoopi Goldberg
When Bruce Joel Rubin was writing Ghost, he didn’t think about the Oscars it might win or the money it would make (more than $500m). Instead, he drew on an intimate moment from his past. When Molly, played by Demi Moore, tells her boyfriend Sam (Patrick Swayze) that she loves him, all he can say in return is: “Ditto.” Back in his college days, Rubin was the ditto guy, unable to echo his then-girlfriend’s heartfelt sentiment. But for an unusual reason: he was gay.
“I’ve never not been gay,” says the genial 81-year-old from his home in a leafy part of upstate New York, where the trees are crowding at the window behind him. “I am fully gay, and I always knew it.

Judge Juan Merchan scolded lawyer Robert Costello for his behavior during former President Donald Trump’s New York hush money trial.
On Monday afternoon, Merchan cleared out his Manhattan courtroom of jurors, spectators and the press so that he could dress down at Costello, who was there as a key defense witness for Trump, after he made a frustrated comment about the judge’s rulings, according to a court transcript.
The transcript also mentioned that the lawyer commented under his breath and rolled his eyes.
The judge told Costello that his behavior during testimony was “contemptuous.” Costello frequently angered the judge, in part by speaking after objections were sustained.
“Geez,” the lawyer muttered after Merchan sustained several prosecution objections to his testimony.
He also called the whole exercise “ridiculous.”
When the judge had addressed Costello for not adhering to basic courtroom decorum, the witness told the court stenographer to “strike...

Update: A “suicidal” Michael Cohen said he almost threw himself off a 21-story building on Park Avenue in Manhattan because he saw no other way out after an FBI raid turned him into a federal criminal target, a lawyer testified this afternoon in the hush money trial of Cohen’s former boss, Donald Trump.
Shortly after prosecutors for the Manhattan District Attorney rested their case against the former president, the lawyer, Robert Costello, was called by Trump’s defense team to discuss a meeting with Cohen. The meeting took place a week after an April 2018 raid by the FBI on Cohen’s hotel room, home, office and safety deposit box.
“He was putting on quite a show,” criminal defense lawyer Costello said, referring to the sit-down at the Loews Regency New York hotel, where Cohen was also staying with his family when the raid occurred.

It’s well-established cultural lore that the 1990s are of mythical importance to many Gen-Xers and even some millennials.
But why though? Was it the relatively strong economy? Preponderance of the color teal? Or even just the fact that the ’90s was the last decade to seem like its own distinct thing before new millennium turned intervals of 10 into an unrecognizable sludge? Seriously – you rarely hear people opine for the innocent times of the “’00s” or “’10s” because that just sounds ridiculous.
All of those are possibilities but real ’90s-heads know the appeal comes down to one thing alone: the cartoons. Animation quite simply dominated the end of the 20th century. With Nickelodeon, Disney, MTV, and many other studios operating at full capacity, the decade was filled with creative and entertaining options. From crude renderings to lush, operatic works, the ’90s had something for every animation fan.

On the face of it, Grégoire is the kind of husband that makes many a woman wish hers would shape up a bit. He’s tall, strong and stylish, with a job in banking that comfortably pays the bills, and the sculpted good looks of, well, the actor Melvil Poupaud — who plays him with enough upfront charm to cover a slight chill at the edges. All that, and he dotes on his wife Blanche (Virginie Efira), insisting on a degree of togetherness that makes clear his fidelity. Those observing more closely, however, may have other concerns: Why is he constantly calling her at work? Why does she never go out with friends? That he’s a psychotic abuser isn’t played as a surprise twist in Valérie Donzelli’s nervy, finely acted domestic thriller “Just the Two of Us” — even as it dabbles in genre tropes, the film presents an all-too-unremarkable reality for many women.

Donald Trump’s legal team and Manhattan state prosecutors squared off in a New York City courtroom Tuesday over the ex-president’s push to move his hush money criminal case into federal court. It didn’t go well for Trump.
Both sides effectively wrangled over whether Trump’s alleged handling of an October 2016 payoff to porn star Stormy Daniels was done in a personal capacity or somehow related to his role as president.
Michael Cohen, Trump’s then consigliere-cum-bagman, handled the $130,000 payout. Trump then repaid Cohen $420,000 through a series of...
