Quentin Tarantino is undoubtedly one of the most influential directors in Hollywood. There is one filmmaker who was influenced and guided by Tarantino and went on to become a prominent name in the horror genre. Eli Roth’s film, Restaurant Dogs, was a clear homage to the Tarantino film Reservoir Dogs. The duo later became good friends and collaborated on several projects over the years.

Roth’s films had their fair share of acclaim and criticism, depending on the audience of the film. He was put on the horror genre map with his controversial film franchise, Hostel. He went on to make Knock Knock with Keanu Reeves, which some fans consider as Reeves’ most disgusting movie.

Last week, the trailer for director Eli Roth’s long-awaited video game adaptation Borderlands, which is set to reach theatres on August 9th, made its way online – and while talking to Entertainment Weekly about the trailer, Roth revealed that he’s currently writing a horror script with 16-year-old Borderlands cast member Ariana Greenblatt, who plays Tiny Tina in the upcoming movie!
Roth told Entertainment Weekly that Greenblatt “loves horror, and we have a great idea, so we’re writing a movie together. That is an exclusive, nobody knows that. I don’t want to say anything about it yet, but she’s so smart I’m like, ‘Let’s write a movie together, and we’ll produce it together, and I’ll direct it, and you’ll star in it.’” Of course, Roth didn’t give away any details about the story he and Greenblatt are collaborating on. Eli Roth’s slasher movie Thanksgiving initially began as a faux trailer created for 2007’s Grindhouse, which ended with ominous voiceover declaring the faux grindhouse film was “coming this February.” It all comes full circle as the new slasher arrives on Netflix…in February.
The slasher arrives on the streaming service much sooner than expected, too. Look for Thanksgiving on Netflix beginning tomorrow, February 17.

16 years after the faux trailer debuted as part of Grindhouse, Eli Roth finally delivered the feature version of Thanksgiving. There were no leftovers, but among the special features on the slasher’s home video release is an audio commentary by Roth and producer-writer Jeff Rendell.
Here are 10 things I learned from the Thanksgiving commentary…
1. The concept dates back to the filmmakers’ childhoods.
Thanksgiving is based on Roth’s faux trailer from Grindhouse, but its origins date back even further than 2007. Best friends since kindergarten, Roth and Rendell grew up in Newton, Massachusetts (about an hour from Plymouth) watching horror movies together.
Inspired by a pivotal theatrical viewing of Silent Night, Deadly Night circa 1984, they longed for a definitive Thanksgiving slasher in the vein of the other holiday horrors.
“We just started thinking of like, ‘What if there was a Thanksgiving slasher movie? You could put someone in an oven, and there was a killer pilgrim,...

Eli Roth’s slasher Thanksgiving is now available on DVD and Blu-ray, and fans of the film will be happy to hear that a sequel is already on the way. Sony’s TriStar plans on releasing Thanksgiving 2 in theaters worldwide in 2025, we learned late last year. Eli Roth and Jeff Rendell are back to write the screenplay for the upcoming sequel.
“We’re gonna take a year off so we can really, really write a great script. We want to outdo ourselves. Make it better than the first one,” Roth teased back in November.
So what can we expect from Thanksgiving 2? Will it be a direct sequel to the first film, following the surviving characters? Or will Roth pivot to a new slasher story entirely?
Well, chatting with Games Radar this week, Thanksgiving stars Nell Verlaque and Rick Hoffman both strongly suggest they’ll be back in Roth’s upcoming sequel.

It's a new year, so it's time for a new Blu-ray round-up! Our first of 2024! Things are a little sparse here in at the start of the year, but there's still some great stuff to check out. We have Eli Roth's holiday slasher "Thanksgiving" to carve things up. Also, the fine folks at Kino Lorber have released John Woo's bonkers action extravaganza "Face/Off" on 4K! "Face/Off" is technically a December release, but we're including it now. Speaking of action, we also have a 4K release of Gareth Evans' "The Raid," aka "The Raid: Redemption." Finally, on the non-action movie front, we have the Criterion release of John Sayles' Western neo-noir character drama "Lone Star."
So let's get to it. And remember to keep spinning those discs.

Sixteen years passed from the time Eli Roth made a slasher faux trailer called Thanksgiving for the Robert Rodriguez / Quentin Tarantino double feature Grindhouse to the day when a feature version of Thanksgiving (read our review Here) finally made its way into theatres – and the fact that we’re being rewarded for our patience with not just that movie, but also a sequel that’s expected to reach theatres sometime in 2025 is truly something to be thankful about. Now Thanksgiving cast members Nell Verlaque and Rick Hoffman have confirmed to Games Radar that they are going to be coming back for Thanksgiving 2!
When asked if she’ll be in the sequel Roth is crafting with Thanksgiving co-writer Jeff Rendell, Verlaque said, “To my knowledge, yes. I think that it’ll be a continuation of where we last saw (her character). So we’ll see. But right now, I think so.

Eli Roth's 2023 slasher film "Thanksgiving" famously started its life back in 2007 in the form of a fake trailer sandwiched in between Robert Rodriguez's "Planet Terror" and Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof," two movies released as a single mega-feature called "Grindhouse." The goal of "Grindhouse" was to recreate the experience of seeing a cheap exploitation double-feature in a run-down New York theater in the early 1980s, complete with film scratches, missing reels, and several previews for upcoming ultra-salacious genre movies. The trailers were all fake at the time, but since 2007, the trailers for "Machete," "Hobo with a Shotgun," and "Thanksgiving" have been made into real movies.

To say it’s been a strange, turbulent year might be a bit of an understatement. Historically, 2023 marks the year of the dual strikes by WGA and SAG-AFTRA, the first time in over 60 years that Hollywood writers and actors went on strike at the same time. While both fought for better working conditions and deservedly won, the work stoppage no doubt plays a large role in the theatrical slate both this year and at least into the next. Through it all, horror continues to thrive. Box office records were shattered and indie darlings and international gems continue to surprise audiences. Of course, it’s in the most turbulent times where horror thrives most; audiences turn to horror for catharsis or release from real world anxieties and fears.
That reflects in 2023’s horror offerings, which has given everything from unexpected lo-fi indie hits like Skinamarink and Screambox’s can’t-miss The Outwaters...

In this week’s cinematic lineup, viewers can anticipate a diverse range of releases, from the festive cheer of “Merry Little Batman” to the suspenseful drama of “Leave the World Behind” and the heart-stopping, horror-inducing narrative of “Thanksgiving.” However, it’s worth noting a somewhat unexpected scarcity of Christmas-focused movies in this listicle. Despite the historical trend of feel-good holiday films during this season, the current offerings showcase an intriguing mix of genres, encompassing not only Christmas tales but also comedy, action, thriller, and horror. The cinematic choices are indeed varied, ensuring a plethora of options for audiences seeking entertainment beyond the traditional yuletide fare.
Whether you’re in the mood for laughter, adrenaline-pumping action, spine-chilling thrills, or heartwarming moments, this listicle unveils a cinematic smorgasbord that goes beyond the anticipated Christmas movie lineup.

It took Eli Roth 16 years to make Thanksgiving – the movie (partially) teased by the trailer he shot for Grindhouse back in 2007. :a[We enjoyed it for what it was]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/thanksgiving-2023/' }, and now, thanks to decent box office, it appears that we won't have to wait as long for the sequel. Roth took to Instagram to announce that he's gotten the green light to start cooking up more slasher-y goodness featuring the masked killer John Carver.
The first film, of course, saw the residents of Plymouth, Massachusetts terrorized by a kidnapping/killing spree targeting people who were in some way connected to a tragic riot at a Black Friday sale the year before.
As the authorities try to track down the mysterious vigilante, a group of high-schoolers must survive the rampage. Roth's answer to the likes of :a[Scream]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/scream-review/' } and :a[Halloween]{href='https://www.

John Carver will kill again! Director Eli Roth has confirmed that his recent slasher hit "Thanksgiving" is indeed getting a sequel. Sony Pictures went ahead and made it official, with the follow-up expected to hit theaters sometime in 2025. Roth took to Instagram to personally share the news with his fans in a brief video, expressing his gratitude to everyone who made the first film a success.

Plot details remain under wraps, but (and not to spoil anything) the ending of the first film was just ambiguous enough to leave the door open for a follow-up. No word yet on who, if any, of the cast members from the first film will return for "Thanksgiving 2." Roth also said in the video that the sequel will arrive in 2025 "probably around Thanksgiving," although a firm release date has not yet been set.

A lot of genre fans had been waiting sixteen years to see director Eli Roth’s holiday slasher Thanksgiving (read our review Here), ever since he contributed a faux trailer for the concept to the Robert Rodriguez / Quentin Tarantino double feature Grindhouse back in 2007. The movie hasn’t exactly done massive numbers since reaching theatres a week and a half ago; so far it has racked up just over $30 million at the global box office. But that’s enough to get Sony’s TriStar Pictures to greenlight a sequel! Roth took to social media to announce that Thanksgiving 2 is a go, and he’ll be returning to the helm for this follow-up! Roth’s announcement can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Eli Roth is returning to the Thanksgiving table. The filmmaker is developing a sequel to his horror feature, which bowed earlier this month and has grossed more than $30 million globally. It stands as Roth’s best reviewed movie as a director.
Sony’s Tristar plans on releasing the sequel in 2025.
The first Thanksgiving began life as a fake trailer in Robert Rodriguez’s and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse, released in 2007.
“We thought, ‘All right, we’re done. We made the best parts [in the fake trailer]. Now we don’t even have to make the movie,’” Roth previously told The Hollywood Reporter. “But for years, people just kept posting that trailer and badgering me and guilt tripping me, and it worked. Shaming the director worked in this case.”
Roth penned the script with Jeff Rendell, his childhood friend. The first installment starred Patrick Dempsey, Addison Rae, Milo Manheim, Jalen Thomas Brooks, Nell Verlaque, with Rick Hoffman,...

Eli Roth has unarguably etched his name as one of this generation’s greatest horror film directors with his 2023 slasher masterpiece Thanksgiving. In an era where slasher films have strayed heavily into comedy, Roth returns to its true nature with Thanksgiving. With a screenplay from Jeff Rendell, Thanksgiving is adapted from the 2007 fictitious movie trailer Roth did for the Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino-directed Grindhouse (2007). So far, critical and audience reviews for Thanksgiving have mostly been positive. With Roth’s reputation for writing and directing splatter films, Thanksgiving delivers all the slasher gore and plot to keep viewers glued...

No word yet on the film’s at-home premiere date. Stay tuned.

Thanksgiving might be over, but the scrumptious scent of Eli Roth’s “Thanksgiving” still lingers over the holiday horror season.
The director’s murderous pilgrim slasher — set in Plymouth, Massachusetts the year after a violent Black Friday trampling leaves three dead on the floor of a department store and puts a masked killer on the path to revenge — invaded our real-world theaters on November 17. It’s doing well with critics and audiences alike, who have been gorging on its themed gore and delighting in its snappy satire and inventive use of corncob holders as a victorious reunion for the “Cabin Fever” director and the horror genre.
Slasher fans have quickly accepted the rampage of the mysterious “John Carver” as a success by all important metrics (it’s doing well at the box office and on Rotten Tomatoes), but the villain’s Thanksgiving-timed arrival in theaters has been a longtime coming for Roth.

(Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images for Sony Pictures) Originally, director Eli Roth created a faux trailer for the horror movie Thanksgiving as part of the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez film Grindhouse. But Roth became so enamored with the idea of the film that he set to work on bringing what had been a phony trailer to the big screen as a real movie. When we spoke to Roth about the project, he told us the initial idea came from a concept that he and co-writer Jeff Rendell had developed decades ago, long before they were actually making movies. Thanksgiving came early this year for Eli Roth after his new holiday slasher film, Thanksgiving, arrived in cinemas to some of the best reviews of the filmmaker’s career. Well-regarded for groundbreaking 2000s horror films like Cabin Fever (2002) and Hostel (2005), Roth has been trying to make Thanksgiving for nearly as long. Originally conceived as a “joke” trailer to be inserted between Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse double feature in 2007, Thanksgiving has been an idea that never left Roth or his childhood friend Jeff Rendell, the latter of whom co-wrote both the Grindhouse trailer and the actual 2023 slasher that is making a bloody splash today.

Sixteen years after the film’s trailer premiered as part of the Grindhouse theatrical experience, Eli Roth’s slasher movie Thanksgiving carved its way into theaters over the weekend.
The rated “R” bloodbath was produced for just $15 million, a number that the film is likely to pass in the coming days. Here in the United States, Thanksgiving scared up $10.2 million in its debut weekend, with the film’s worldwide opening bringing the current total to $12.6 million.
While not exactly a massive opening weekend for Roth’s return to horror – factoring in marketing costs and other factors, Thanksgiving likely needs to hit $30 million before it starts making a profit – it’s just great to see a bloody-as-hell, old school slasher carving out a piece of the box office pie here in 2023. And most importantly, fans and critics alike are raving about the back-to-basics slasher, which currently has an 83% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Plot: After a Black Friday riot ends in tragedy, a mysterious Thanksgiving-inspired killer terrorizes Plymouth, Massachusetts – the birthplace of the infamous holiday.
Review: I still remember seeing the original Grindhouse in theaters back in the summer of 2007. The experience was unlike any other and one thing that left an indelible impact on me was the fake trailers. As a massive fan of slasher movies, Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving really stood out. His intention of finally giving us horror fanatics a slasher set at Thanksgiving (Blood Rage aside) played like gangbusters. And there were rumors for years that Roth would expand it into a full-length feature film. Thankfully, over 16 years later, this plan has finally come to fruition.
Given that the original trailer was pure exploitation, it was smart of Roth to evolve the story to modern day. I’m not sure how well some of the elements of the trailer...

Director Eli Roth returns with this entertaining holiday-themed slasher based on the mock trailer he created for 2007’s Grindhouse. As such, the tagline is so good, it makes it into the movie as a line of dialogue: “This Thanksgiving, there will be…no leftovers.”
Set in Plymouth Massachusetts, the film opens with a horrific Black Friday tragedy, when customers go crazy at a Right-Mart store sale, leaving multiple people trampled to death. One year later, with Thanksgiving approaching again, high school student Jessica (Nell Verlaque) and her friends (who were all in the store on the night of the massacre) start getting tagged into creepy posts on Instagram, by someone calling himself “John Carver”.

It’s only about two minutes and 25 seconds, yet it remains the single best thing Eli Roth has ever done. Tucked right in the middle of Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s ambitious, mondo-grimy Grindhouse (2007) is a trailer for a fake movie called Thanksgiving. You probably remember it, if you remember much about that wax Forty-Deuce museum with a pulse. It’s the end of November, someone is murdering horny teens, kind old ladies and, er, hornier teens in the town of Plymouth, Massachusetts. The killer is dressed like a pilgrim.

At first glance, one may be wary of the new horror film Thanksgiving, thinking that it may portend future offerings such as The Groundhog Day Massacre or even The Revenge of the Tooth Fairy, but one need not be concerned of those coming to fruition because this holiday-themed film is such a turkey unto itself that it may have effectively killed the genre before it was even created.
One year after a riot on Black Friday results in tragedy in Plymouth, Massachusetts, the town’s residents begin disappearing one by one in what appear to be revenge killings aimed at those most culpable for the massacre one year prior. But, of course, something far more sinister is at play than a sadistic pilgrim killing the town’s less-than-innocent inhabitants.

Thanksgiving filmmaker Eli Roth has been dreaming of a Thanksgiving-themed slasher movie since he was 12 years old, and he thought he’d forever scratched that itch when he made a fictitious trailer for a movie called Thanksgiving inside of Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse (2007) double feature. But much to his surprise, genre fans wouldn’t let go of the idea of seeing a feature-length take on the concept, so Roth and his childhood friend/co-writer, Jeff Rendell, eventually put pen to paper. The duo still took their time to crack the story, using a Black Friday riot at a big box store as their inciting incident, and Roth, at this very moment, now has the best reviews of his career.
“We thought, ‘All right, we’re done. We made the best parts [in the fake trailer]. Now we don’t even have to make the movie,’” Roth tells The Hollywood Reporter. “But for years,...

The director and screenwriter of "Thanksgiving" — Eli Roth and Jeff Rendell, respectively — have been very vocal about the fact that Thanksgiving seems to be a holiday with vast untapped potential as fodder for horror films, slasher movies in particular. After all, Halloween and Christmas are well-trodden as body count fare and even lesser holidays like Independence Day have their memorable slashers. Poor Turkey Day has only one; though "Blood Rage" is a pretty fantastic little indie that everyone should make a part of their yearly traditions, it uses Thanksgiving as a side dish rather than the main course.
So, Roth and Rendell were determined to fill this void themselves, and 2007's "Grindhouse" project by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino gave them just the opportunity they needed. It’s nearly time, horror fans! After more than 16 years of anticipation, Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving is set to debut in theaters this weekend, based on his memorable trailer entry that was first featured in Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse double feature back in 2007.
At a recent press day for Thanksgiving, Roth discussed the pressure he felt once he and writer/longtime collaborator Jeff Rendell set out to finally make the feature film version of this idea and how they approached the story and feel of the film. Eli also chatted about how Thanksgiving examines some of the darker elements of the November holiday, working with his cast, and more.
Check out our conversation with Eli Roth below and look for Thanksgiving in theaters everywhere, beginning tonight!

A new holiday horror classic emerges with the arrival of Eli Roth‘s Thanksgiving in theaters on November 17.
In Thanksgiving, “After a Black Friday riot ends in tragedy, a mysterious Thanksgiving-inspired killer terrorizes Plymouth, Massachusetts – the birthplace of the infamous holiday.”
Bloody Disgusting spoke with Roth, who wrote the script with Jeff Rendell, about his gory slasher and how it’s evolved since its faux trailer origins. In part one of our chat, the horror filmmaker reflected on the origins of his slasher and his thoughts on modern horror.
Now, in part two, Roth shares the research put into the contemporary slasher and the design behind his killer, John Carver.
While Roth is a lifelong horror study, filmmaker, and fanatic, Thanksgiving alters the cold open kill that’s tradition for the slasher subgenre. When asked if he felt any pressure expanding the fake Grindhouse trailer and its memorable kills in a contemporary slasher,...

October is usually thought of as the prime time for horror, but the best horror movie of 2023 — for that matter, the most deliriously entertaining horror movie since Wes Craven‘s original “Scream” — arrives not for Halloween but for Thanksgiving. It’s a movie horror fans have been eagerly anticipating ever since director Eli Roth created a fake “Thanksgiving” trailer for Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s “Grindhouse” in 2007, and the feature version that Roth and writer Jeff Rendell have extrapolated from that hilarious and gory short is well worth the wait. Their “Thanksgiving” is an ingeniously structured, elegantly composed thrill machine. It’s also a gleeful assault on good taste; it’s what you get when a 1970s or ’80s Canadian tax shelter thriller like “Prom Night” or “My Bloody Valentine” is directed by a true artist.
“Thanksgiving” riffs on dozens of slasher favorites from “Black Christmas” and John Carpenter...

Eli Roth is home for the holidays with enough fiendish fun and ripped flesh to send horror fans to theaters multiple times between now and Thanksgiving.
The “Hostel” director hasn’t touched his signature genre in almost a decade, but he’s been cooking up his latest film with writer Jeff Rendell since they were teenagers — and it’s more than worth the wait. The duo first realized their childhood concept of an eponymous “Thanksgiving” slasher as a fake trailer appearing in Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s “Grindhouse” in 2007. That cinematic morsel immediately stirred up cries for a full-blown adaptation, and for its annual re-watchers, the feature-length “Thanksgiving” is exactly what you’d expect.
Part “Thankskilling,” part “Scream,” this modern horror-comedy is a brilliant retrofitting of the moments you already know and love from the “Grindhouse” version (cheerleader trampoline stab!), serving up the original idea cranked to high heat...
