The Cannes Film Festival has unveiled the inaugural lineup for its Immersive Competition section, the first-ever selection of augmented and virtual reality works to screen at the austere French film fest.
The 8 competition titles and 6 out-of-competition screenings include works featuring such talents as Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell, Millie Bobby Brown, and Tahar Rahim. The lineup highlights cutting-edge VR and Ar techniques and includes location-based virtual reality, mixed reality experiences, projection mapping, and holographic works.
Introducing the new immersive section, Cannes said it hoped to “spotlight the next generation of international artists who are redefining storytelling and inventing new narrative-driven experiences that move beyond the traditional two-dimensional cinema screen.” The section is being organized with support from the French national film board, the Cnc. The immersive works will be presented at an exhibition space in the Cannes Cineum complex on the outskirts of the city and at the campus of Cannes’s Georges Méliès film school.

Having already directed plenty of action-thrillers, a few sci-fis and — last year — a whole load of mutts (the Venice-bowing “Dogman”), Luc Besson is now set to venture into epic fantasy territories with one of the most famous big screen characters of all.
The French director is to direct an adaptation of Bram Stoker’s’ “Dracula,” telling the story of 15th century Prince Vladimir who cursed God following the death of his beloved wife and is turned into a vampire. Later, in 19th century London, he discovers his wife’s doppelgänger and dooms himself by pursuing her.
Variety understands that Christoph Waltz is in talks to star, as is Caleb Landry-Jones, which would reunite Besson with his lead in “Dogman,” which bowed in Venice last year. Like “Dogman,” Besson’s EuropaCorp is producing.
Kinology is talking to buyers about the project at the European Film Market.

EuropaCorp CEO Axel Duroux, the French-Swiss executive who joined the Paris-based company in 2020, has stepped down from his position.
Luc Besson, who co-founded EuropaCorp in 1999, will act as the interim CEO for a limited period starting immediately, EuropaCorp said in a release.
Duroux will remain a shareholder and will continue to work closely with EuropaCorp as special advisor to the chairman until mid-May “in order to ensure the best possible handover to the new management team,” the company added.
EuropaCorp was taken over by New York fund Vine Alternative Investments in 2020, after being placed on a debt waiver by a French commercial court. As part of its restructuring plan, EuropaCorp received a new credit line of $100 million to develop a slate of films and start producing again. Besson, who previously had an operational role in the company, became artistic director with a five-year contract renewable for another two years.

For the last few months, trades, outlets, brands across the world have all wanted their slice of discourse in the marketing and publicity heaven that is Greta Gerwig's “Barbie” (2023). For a website dedicated to Asian cinema, it might be argued that this smidge of pie was not ours to claim. Yet as I sat through its credits, celebrating our collective womanhood, a film by Lee Sang-Woo came to mind. 11 years ago, in another “Barbie” (2012), then-child actress Kim Sae-Ron quipped, “A pretty and skinny person like (Barbie) doesn't exist. If she does, then she must be an alien.”

Luc Besson has been cleared of all rape charges from a 2018 case involving actress Sand Van Roy.
The “Léon, the Professional” director was accused of raping the Dutch-Belgian actress multiple times over the course of two years. The Van Roy case against Besson was dismissed in 2021 after an investigation, but the legal charges are now officially dropped by the highest court in France as of June 21, 2023.
“This decision confirms the dismissal in favor of Luc Besson and confirms all the decisions of the last five years which have found him not guilty,” Besson’s attorney Thierry Marambert said in a statement to IndieWire. “It therefore puts a definitive end to this procedure initiated in 2018, during which Luc Besson was systematically cleared by all the magistrates who examined the case. As a lawyer, I welcome this exemplary procedure, which has allowed the manifestation of the truth which is that Luc Besson is innocent.

British singer-actor Luke Evans and Taiwanese female actor Gwei Lun-mei will co-star in “Weekend Escape Project,” an action thriller being produced in Taiwan by EuropaCorp.
The film marks a further comeback for EuropaCorp after a four-year hiatus that followed the personal travails of its founder, Luc Besson, and financial difficulties at the company. EuropaCorp was taken over by its junior lender, Vine Alternative Investments, in 2020, as part of a restructuring deal.
Besson and Virginie Besson-Silla are producing the movie for EuropaCorp. Kinology is handling international sales.
Directed by George Huang, the film (aka “Weekend in Taipei”) is set to start shooting on July 3 in Taipei, Taiwan’s capital. Production is expected to take three months and take in locations including the Ximending district, Zhongshan Hall, the Dome and Taipei City Hall.
In February, Besson-Silla scouted locations for the film with director Olivier Megaton (“Transporter 3”) and met with Taipei mayor Wayne Chiang.

Acting and directing were not on Jay Chou’s mind when he first began his music career nearly two decades ago. But over the years, he has accumulated several memorable film and TV roles locally in Asia and in Hollywood. And, between music ventures, he has sat in the film director’s chair.

His screen career began in 2005, when Chou made his film debut with the release of car-racing action feature “Initial D,” an on-screen adaptation of the Japanese manga of the same name, directed by Hong Kong’s Andrew Lau and Alan Mak (“Infernal Affairs”).

On a truck packed with furniture, a mother is telling her daughter that their new home is on “Happiness Road”. A little girl, with her eyes wide-opened, asks: “what is happiness?” Hearing this question, the father is excited that he gets a precocious daughter: “she will become a philosopher some day!” The down-to-earth mother gives a straightforward and practical answer instead: “happiness is when you have enough to eat and a roof above you.” This is how Taiwanese director Sung Hsin-Yin opens her film “On Happiness Road”, a recent animation wonder from the island.

A self-acknowledged "showcase for Academy Award frontrunners," the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is often overlooked for the actual films that earn it festival status. An amalgamation of international discoveries and ’merica’s circuit highlights, the Sbiff curates a week of best-of-the-best to pair with their star-praising. The 2015 edition offers another expansive selection, bookended by two films that aren’t on any radars just yet. Sbiff will open with "Desert Dancer," producer Richard Raymond’s directorial debut. Starring Reece Ritchie and Frieda Pinto, the drama follows a group of friends who wave off the harsh political climate of Iran’s 2009 presidential election in favor of forming a dance team, picking up moves from Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev thanks to the magic of YouTube. The festival will close with "McFarland, USA," starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello. Telling the 1987 true story of a Latino high school’s underdog cross-country team,...

While most critics and punters alike were predicting that Richard Linklater’s Boyhood would take home the prestigious Golden Bear award at Berlinale this year, it came as something of a surprise to see Diao Yinan’s eccentric neo-noir Black Coal, Thin Ice rewarded in its place. Though certainly a unique, and distinctively stylistic offering, this flawed piece can certainly consider itself somewhat fortunate to have won the much coveted, top prize.
Beginning in 1999 in Northern China, decapitated bodily parts turn up mysteriously in a coal mine, as a foreboding atmosphere lingers over the community as further morbid discoveries are made. When investigating the case, it becomes even murkier when the incompetent law enforcement find themselves engulfed in a shoot out at a local hairdressers, leaving two of the police officers dead. One of the survivors is the cop Zhang Zili (Liao Fan) who is suspended following the incident. Five...

Because her aunt moved to Shanghai, Doris felt it was time to begin her dream job as a café owner. She brings to life Doris’s Café and infuses it with an atmosphere of serenity and a welcomed lightheartedness. Josie is her non-cheesecake-loving sister put to work there by their over-bearing mother. Before getting a real glimpse of the place, now opened, the story takes us back one year earlier only a few days before the grand opening.
To celebrate the Café’s inauguration, friends and family send in gifts to show support for the new business. A plastic crocodile, a fake weight-lifting bar, a plush microphone… in a word: junk!, a far-cry from the finest flour or Arabica beans Doris was dreaming about. In an attempt to get rid of all that clutter Josie, less business oriented, reverts back to an old bartering system: trading. The Café now becomes...

Need more one-sheets for the upcoming Tsui Hark action flick “The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate”? Of course you do! Everyone needs more promotional material in their lives, especially when they’re hyper-stylish character posters. All six of ‘em are embedded below. They’re not bad, as these sort of things go, though I think I prefer the first batch over these. If you missed them, you can always click here to be magically transported to the article in question. “The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate”, apparently, is a remake of Hark’s own film. Weird. This version stars Jet Li, Zhou Xun, Chen Kun, Kwai Lun-Mei, Li Yuchun, and Mavis Fan. The flick opens in China in December. Unfortunately, the rest of us will have to wait. Darn it. I like swanky posters. I really do. So yes, I love these three character posters for Tsui Hark’s upcoming “The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate”. They are, in a word, swanky. A remake of Hark’s own film, the new and minty “Flying Swords of Dragon Gate” is set during the Ming Dynasty, and follows one those powerful eunuchs who is violently crushing revolts and establishing a reign of terror across China. With his troops on hand, the eunuch proceeds toward the titular Dragon Gate with the idea of terminating the rest of those pesky rebels, but finds instead plenty of flying swords awaiting him. That’ll teach the eunuch. Starring Jet Li, Zhou Xun, Chen Kun, Kwai Lun-Mei, Li Yuchun, and Mavis Fan. Hong Kong and China gets the film first in December. Thanks to Qing for the heads up. Kung Fu legend Jet Li and legendary director Tsui Hark reunit once again to speak about there upcoming movie “Flying Swords Of Dragon Gate”.
Both Jet and Tsui have worked many times together in the past with movie such as the Once Upon A Time In China series and The Master, i am a fan of both movies mentioned so i am looking forward to watching this.
Tsui Hark had this to say when speaking at the Peking University,
“I like wu xia films, because in the real world, we sometimes can’t express ourselves through words. However, things in the world of Wu xia can be revealed freely and romantically.” Tsui was quoted as saying. “Call me curious or crazy, what I really want is to put my Wu xia fantasies on the big silver screens. With 3D technology, a sense of realism is finally being achieved.”

I don't know if you've noticed or not, but Martial Arts films have been getting better and better. They are doing some fantastically cool and inventive stuff for these movies, and I've really been enjoying many of the most recent martial arts films that have been released.
A great teaser trailer has been released for Tsui Hark's new film Flaying Sword of Dragon Gate, which stars Jet Li. Hark is know for making some pretty incredible martial arts films such as Time and Tide, which if you haven't seen yet, put it on your list it will blow your mind. The film also stars Zhou Xun, Aloys Chen Kun, Li Yuchun and Kwai Lun-Mei.
Hark's new film looks like it has the potential to be just as jaw dropping, this is only a teaser trailer so what is shown is just the tip of the iceberg. The story follows...

Time for some quick, morning wuxia action. McN via The Playlist has found an official trailer, which I would call more of a teaser trailer, for Tsui Hark's new martial arts epic The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate, starring Jet Li as well as Zhou Xun, Chen Kun, Li Yuchun, Kwai Lun-mei, Louis Fan and Mavis Fan. The film is a remake of King Hu's Dragon Gate Inn (1966) and Raymond Lee's New Dragon Gate Inn (1992) and was shot in 3D. There are some very interesting shots in this, I thought it was worth featuring today. Check out that final scene with the huge sand tornadoes. Not exactly sure what's going on, but it looks cool! The latest trailer for director Tsui Hark’s upcoming martial arts epic “Flying Swords of Dragon Gate” looks absolutely fantastic. From a visual standpoint, the film is stunning, and I’m anxious to see what sort of kung fu madness Jet Li and his “Once Upon a Time” collaborator have cooked up. To borrow a quote from the immortal Keanu Reeves: “Whoa”. The film, which also stars Chen Kun, Zhou Xun, Louis Fan Siu-wong, Kwai Lun-mei, Mavis Fan, and Li Yu-chun, opens in China this December. Last month we brought you an early teaser for Tsui Hark's latest film Flying Swords Of Dragon Gate. Admittedly, the quality wasn't great, but the style and action certainly got many of us excited. Of course, the collaboration between Tsui and Jet Li, the first since their Once Upon A Time In China films, is also a great reason for the anticipation of this film. The film stars Jet Li, Chen Kun, Zhou Xun, Louis Fan Siu-wong, Kwai Lun-mei, Mavis Fan and Li Yu-chun, and tells the story of the struggle between a Ming Dynasty general (played by Jet Li) and his rival, a powerful eunuch (played by Chen Kun). Check out the first images from Tsui Hark’s remake/sequel to his 1992 movie “Dragon Inn”, titled “Flying Swords of Dragon Gate”, which Hark is currently shooting in 3D. Doris’s Café is a homey space where people could relax and enjoy the smoothing afternoon sun and daydreaming. The aroma of coffee and home-baked desserts fills the air. The café is meant to be as elegant as its owner, Doris, but has been turned upside down by her sister, Josie. Ignoring Doris’s protest, Josie starts exchanging goods with costumers in the shop. Objects of various kinds begin to accumulate; discarded by their previous owners, they prove to be treasures in the eyes of others. The activity of swapping goods upstages Doris’s coffee-making and becomes the biggest attraction of the shop.
