Fantasy Island and Lego Masters are moving from Fox’s summer schedule to in-season.
The low-cost drama and the Will Arnett-hosted unscripted series were previously set to launch on May 31. However, this morning with the reveal of Fox’s latest slate, the two shows are being pushed to later in the season.
“There’s some great moments where you start to see what you’ve got in the can and they came in so good,” Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier said, speaking on its pre-upfront call. “We’re so blessed to have such a hefty returning slate and great choices to make.”
Michael Thorn, President of Entertainment at Fox, added, “Fantasy Island is really a stand out for us and we’ve lined up some incredible guest stars for this season. It’s really fun and escapist and we can’t wait to have that back on our air.

A true-crime document that examines a 2008 judicial kickback scandal from all sides, "Kids for Cash" will scare the wits out of anyone worried about how institutional neglect is affecting our kids. "It's one of those stories that keeps on giving," said director Robert May of this bizarre and many-layered tale of lives affected by a once-celebrated judge whose zero-tolerance policy for juvenile crime precipitated over 3,000 child incarcerations paid for by the incarceration centers themselves. The scandal, though dating back to 2007, made international news in 2009 when a federal investigation in Luzerne County revealed that judges Mark Ciavarella and Michael Conahan were accepting nearly $3 million in bribes from Robert Mericle, the millionaire developer of two private juvenile detention facilities. None of these incarcerated -- and eventually freed -- young people came out the people they were before. May and his producing partner Lauren Timmons turned up...

2014 is now in full swing, the Sundance Film Festival has closed its doors, and film festivals like South by Southwest and Tribeca are generating more buzz for the year’s noteworthy indie narratives and documentaries. In recent years, documentaries such as Restrepo, Gasland, and Searching For Sugarman went on to become heavyweights. This year’s contenders include topics taken from popular memoirs and biographies, along with subject matter pertaining to youths and youth culture. Below, you’ll find a comprehensive list of Sundance and non-Sundance documentaries to keep an eye out for this year, equipped with official synopsis and trailer when available. 2014 is shaping out to a versatile year in the documentary world, ranging from heavy-handed family dramas such as Tracy Droz Tragos’ and Andrew Droz Palermo’s Rich Hill, to baseball biographies such as Chapman and Maclain Way’s The Battered Bastards of Baseball and Jeff Radice’s No No A Dockumentary,...

In the 35 years since Scared Straight! won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, there have been numerous follow-ups and a brand of juvenile rehabilitation programs named after it. Have the films and the efforts they’ve inspired worked? That’s up for debate in some areas, but regardless it’s worth noting their one major limitation: they aim to teach kids that if they do something criminal they’ll go to prison. Well, there’s a new doc that goes further to send a scarier message to our youth. Robert May‘s Kids For Cash offers the cynical idea that kids can be completely or relatively innocent and still wind up incarcerated, because you never know when a mishandling of justice may occur for someone of any age. Specifically, this doc is about a scandal involving corrupt judges in Pennsylvania who sent thousands of youths to a detention center from which they received millions of dollars. The...

Chicago – The funny thing about documentaries is that any goal of truly replicating reality, or the truth, is impossible. Unless a documentary film were to convey an experience with 360 degrees and 24/7 coverage (Aka life), it will always be a subjective endeavor. Documentary storytellers are always creating a point of view, simply by choosing where to point a camera, and where to cut a sequence.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
While “Kids for Cash” does not achieve such a breakthrough in that respect, it is a rare documentary that nudges viewers closer to having an impression of a situation’s both sides. With an elaborate story, (one that is literally charted out by one of its subjects), it does show a big picture, with two distinct halves. Keeping to the complications within its center story, “Kids for Cash” does give its villain, one with surprising complications, a distinct amount of screen time.

Robert May’s doc Kids for Cash is based on a judicial miscarriage that makes some of us want to grab a pitchfork and … Sorry. Emotions run riot in the faces of children sent by the thousands to a for-profit juvenile-detention center by a Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, judge named Mark Ciavarella, later convicted of receiving kickbacks. The kids’ offenses were as minor as shoplifting DVDs and, most notoriously, creating a satirical MySpace page that made fun of a vice-principal—years for sass.Surprisingly, Ciavarella sat down for extended interviews with May and comes off as even tempered. (“I’m not this mad judge.”) He disputes taking a bribe for every kid convicted, admitting only to accepting a finder’s fee upwards of $2 million for helping to get the center built. But he doesn’t repent his judicial philosophy. May’s chief focus is so-called Zero Tolerance, whereby the threat of...
