As Cannes nears its end, some major contenders have already found homes, while many more buzzy titles with Palme d’Or aspirations are awaiting buyers. This year’s market hasn’t been weighed down by the writers or actors strikes in the same way as last year, meaning companies like A24, Neon, Apple, and more have jumped in on exciting packages of possibly future contenders.

There’s one very good scene in “Armand,” the first movie written and directed by Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel, who is the grandson of Ingmar Bergman and Liv Ullmann. We’re inside a primary school in Norway. Elisabeth, the mother of a student, has been summoned to the school to appear before a panel of teachers. She’s informed, in dribs and drabs, that her six-year-old son, Armand, may have sexually abused one of his classmates. Since Elisabeth believes that she has a well-adjusted son, and that a six-year-old can’t be guilty of abuse in any predatory way, she fixes her interrogators with a look of skeptical contempt. And after she’s been grilled about a series of what strike her as trivial micro transgressions, she starts to laugh. In fact, she can’t stop laughing.
Elisabeth is played by Renate Reinsve, who reached a new peak of prominence with...

Back in Cannes a year after presiding over the main Cannes jury, the two-time Palme d’or winner Ruben Öslund unveiled more details about his next mega-project, English-language “The Entertainment System Is Down,” which he said should be ready for Cannes 2026.
The press conference, attended by the hottest talent and producers from the Nordic region and beyond, was hosted by Film i Väst, one of Europe’s largest regional film funds.
Making his usual rock star appearance, flanked by actors Kirsten Dunst and Daniel Brühl, Östlund unveiled more details about “The Entertainment System Is Down”, to be shot entirely on a real 747 airplane, bought by the producers for the movie.
”I was in London doing some casting and Erik [Hemmendorff, producer and partner in the Swedish banner Plattform Produktion] was in Northern London looking for airplanes. A few days later I asked: ‘Did you buy it?’ And he said: ‘Yes!’ That was quite early in the process. I said: ‘Oh,...

Cannes: You are no doubt familiar with the work of Renate Reinsve. The Norwegian actress earned accolades for her performance in Joachim Trier’s stellar “The Worst Person in the World,” and if you happened to attend the 2024 Sundance Film Festival this past January, you may have seen her in Aaron Schimberg’s lauded “A Different Man.” Reinsive has already proven her prowess as an actress, but there is a scene in her latest endeavor, “Armand,” which, and excuse the justified hyperbole, is simply startling.

Before making Joachim Trier’s 2021 hit The Worst Person in the World, Renate Reinsve was about to jack it all in. Three years later — after A Different Man, with Sebastian Stan, Another Life, with Gael García Bernal, and Handling the Undead, a chiller from Let the Right One In writer John Ajvide Lindqvist — she now finds herself not just back in Cannes but doing double duty at the Sundance, Berlin and Tribeca film festivals (“It’s a running joke that I have two movies everywhere”). Reinsve takes the lead in the Swedish drama Armand, directed by Ingmar Bergman’s grandson Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel.
Deadline: What can you tell us about how you were cast in Armand?
Renate Reinsve: Halfdan, the director, approached me 10 years ago, and we did a short movie together. I think we did it in two days. Afterwards, we both stood there with tears in our eyes,...

Brazilian auteur Kleber Mendonça Filho (“Bacurau”) is set to direct “The Secret Agent,” a gripping political thriller headlined by “Civil War” star Wagner Moura. The film is set in the late 1970s during the final years of Brazil’s military dictatorship.
MK2 Films, the sales banner behind the Oscar-winning “Anatomy of a Fall,” will introduce the project to buyers at the Cannes Film Market. Now in pre-production, “The Secret Agent” is being produced by Brazil’s Cinemascopio and Mk Productions, whose credits include Oscar-nominated films such as Joachim Trier’s “The Worst Person in the World” and Pawel Pawlikowski’s “Cold War.”
Moura, who broke through internationally with his Golden Globe-nominated performance as Pablo Escobar in the Netflix series “Narcos,” will star as Marcelo, a university professor in his 40s who is on the run. He travels from São Paulo to the seaside city of Recife during Carnival week, hoping to reunite with his son.

Do you remember the very first moment when you realized a movie could be far more than just a brief, amiable diversion from the temporal slog of life as an extant human? That first moment you realized film could be art capable of providing a fully nourishing spiritual experience? That perhaps even made you want to become a filmmaker in order to provide that experience to someone else? Just as important: Do you recall the most recent movie that gave you that same feeling or fit of inspiration? Well, in this week’s Survey Says that’s just what we asked: What’s the first movie you saw that you considered a masterpiece… and the most recent?

April’s an uncommonly strong auteurist month for the Criterion Channel, who will highlight a number of directors––many of whom aren’t often grouped together. Just after we screened House of Tolerance at the Roxy Cinema, Criterion are showing it and Nocturama for a two-film Bertrand Bonello retrospective, starting just four days before The Beast opens. Larger and rarer (but just as French) is the complete Jean Eustache series Janus toured last year. Meanwhile, five William Friedkin films and work from Makoto Shinkai, Lizzie Borden, and Rosine Mbakam are given a highlight.

At the start of 2022, in the lead-up to the Oscars, Norwegian actress Renate Reinsve was in the spotlight. So was the story of how close she came to quitting acting before Joachim Trier offered her the role of Julie in The Worst Person in the World, a film that catapulted her, then 34, to a certain level of fame with two unlikely Oscar nominations. Have two years of attention brought some airs and graces? Don’t count on it. “I ran away from home to Scotland,” Reinsve recalls to me across a table at Berlin’s Ritz Carlton. “I jumped on a plane because it was just £1 and then I stayed for a year. I had to go back for an acting-school audition but I also had to go home because my intestines hurt so much, because you drink so much. I worked in a bar when I was 17. I was way too young.

Sex, a provocative and candid look at constricting gender roles by Norwegian director Dag Johan Haugerud, has won the Europa Cinemas Label as best European film in the Panorama section of the 2024 Berlin Film Festival.
Jan Gunnar Roise and Thorbjorn Harr star in Sex as two married and ostensibly heterosexual chimney sweeps whose experiences lead them to question their supposedly fixed sexual and gender identities. The film was a critical hit in Berlin, with The Hollywood Reporter comparing its “gentle subversiveness” of the male character study to Joachim Trier’s twist on the traditional rom-com in the Oscar-nominated The Worst Person in the World. If Renate Reinsve hadn’t been offered the lead in Joachim Trier’s 2021 feature The Worst Person in the World, she was planning to quit acting and become a carpenter. After years of frustration with the roles being offered her in Norway, Reinsve had decided to try out Plan B: Learn woodworking and set up a carpentry school for young girls and women.
“I had just finished renovating my house,” Reinsve recalls, “and I really loved it, doing things with my hands, making something physical and real. So I thought: Maybe this is what I should be doing.”
But that call from Trier put Plan A back on the table. The Worst Person in the World, which Reinsve describes as an “anti-romantic romantic comedy,” premiered in Cannes and was an instant breakout. The film, the first part of the “Sex Dreams Love” trilogy by Norway’s Dag Johan Haugerud, has garnered attention for its thought-provoking exploration of sexuality and gender roles.
“Sex” follows two men in heterosexual marriages, who have an unexpected experience that challenges them to reconsider their understanding of sexuality, gender and identity. One has a sexual encounter with another man, without considering it either as an expression of homosexuality or infidelity and discusses it with his wife afterwards. Norwegian director Thea Hvistendahl’s zombie movie “Handling the Undead,” premiering at Sundance and to be released in the U.S. by Neon, sees the reunion of Renate Reinsve and Anders Danielsen Lie, the stars of Oscar-nominated “The Worst Person in the World,” in a poetic, visually-charged chronicling of a hot summer’s day in Oslo when the dead mysteriously come back to life.
Hvistendahl’s feature debut, an adaptation of the eponymous novel by “Let the Right One In” author John Ajvide Lindqvist, is not your conventional zombie movie. “It’s very important to mention to people who are going to see it that they shouldn’t expect the regular zombie flick. I made the film with the zombie genre in mind, and wanted to subvert some of the classic tropes, but if people are only looking for a thrill, this film might not be it!,” quips the director.

It’s not so much a warning as an invitation: Thea Hvistendahl’s “Handling the Undead,” though it features “The Worst Person in the World” stars Renate Reinsve and Anders Danielsen Lie in leading roles, is not the usual expected reunion between two of Norway’s biggest acting breakouts. Leave it to first-time feature filmmaker Hvistendahl to clear that up: “It’s not ‘Worst Person in the World,’ just a horror version.”
But she’s not mad about the attention this canny casting is already earning her film, which adapts the John Ajvide Lindqvist novel of the same name and follows a trio of different families as they grapple with their beloved (and very recently dead) members coming back to life. In fact, Hvistendahl is quick to point out that Danielsen Lie was attached to the film in 2019, two years before Joachim Trier’s smash hit premiered at Cannes.

Awards prognosticators are, for the most part not, the audience voting for the Oscars. But the consensus upon the announcement of the 2024 PGA Awards nominations is that the Producers Guild of America’s picks for the prestigious Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures hit the nail on the head in terms of the direction the Best Picture race has been trending toward. In other words, it sure seemed like we just got an advance notice of the 10 films that will fill up nomination slots for the Academy’s highest honor come January 23.
For context, the PGA Awards are one of the most accurate bellwethers for Best Picture, with 15 of its last 20 guild winners (including “Everything Everywhere All at Once” last year) going on to win the Oscar. Other honors like the Critics Choice Awards and the AFI Awards have a similar reputation for accuracy, but...

Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” missed out on being chosen as France’s Oscar entry, but the movie has been a critical and commercial hit — including in the U.S., where it’s become the highest-grossing specialized foreign-language release post-pandemic, according to distributor Neon.
Released in the States on Oct. 13, “Anatomy of a Fall” has pulled in $3.5 million so far, putting it ahead of Joachim Trier’s “The Worst Person in the World” and on track to match last year’s Palme d’Or winner “Triangle of Sadness,” another Neon movie.
A courtroom drama exploring the collapse of a marriage, “Anatomy of a Fall” stars Sandra Huller (“The Zone of Interest”) as a novelist who is put on trial following the mysterious death of her husband, and sees her son being called to the witness stand.

Her performance earned her the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress and a nomination for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, and she’s taken off ever since.

Legend has it Renate Reinsve’s still running with a joyful expression, but Joachim Trier is soon bringing her back into the fold: with regular co-writer Eskil Vogt he’s penned Sentimental Value, their follow-up to your ex-girlfriend’s favorite movie The Worst Person in the World, and which starts shooting next August with MK2 aboard. [Variety]
Described by Agat Films’ Juliette Schrameck and Mk’s Nathanaël Karmitz as a story of “family, memory and how we need to rewrite the stories we tell about ourselves in order to survive,” it concerns Nora (Reinsve), an actor, and her sister Agnes as they grieve the loss of their mother––amidst which their father, Gustav, returns from a long absence. One person’s “Worst Person in the World” is another filmmaker’s new favorite collaborator.
Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier, director of the cult-favorite coming-of-age romance “The Worst Person in the World,” is reteaming with that film’s star, Renate Reinsve, for “Sentimental Value.” The show-business drama will be their second film together after she won the Best Actress award at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival for portraying a restless, mercurial spirit Julie. “The Worst Person in the World” was nominated for Best Original Screenplay (Trier with Eskel Vogt) and Best International Feature at the 94th Academy Awards.
As first reported by Variety, “Sentimental Value” follows an actor named Nora (played by Reinsve) and her sister Agnes (yet to be cast), both grieving the death of their mother. Meanwhile, their estranged father, a formerly successful filmmaker named Gustav, re-enters their lives with a comeback script, offering the leading role to Nora. She refuses.

Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier will next direct “Sentimental Value” (working title), a family drama with Renate Reinsve, who won best actress in Cannes for her role in Trier’s Oscar-nominated 2021 film “The Worst Person of the World,” attached to star in.
“Sentimental Value” will follow Nora (Reinsve), an actor, and her sister Agnes, who are grieving the loss of their mother while their father Gustav reappears in their lives after a long absence. Gustav, a once-celebrated filmmaker, has written a script for a comeback movie and offered the main part to his daughter Nora, but she categorically refuses the role. During a career retrospective in France, Gustav meets an adoring Hollywood star and offers her the part intended for Nora. When the film starts shooting back home in Norway, Gustav seizes the opportunity to repair his bond with Nora and her sister.
