After spending decades in development hell, a live-action adaptation of the Neil Gaiman comic book series The Sandman actually made it into production and was released into the world as a Netflix series in August of 2022. (Read our review Here.) Season 2 of the show went into production last year, then had to be put on pause for a while due to the writers and actors strikes. Their characters can be seen in this promo clip:

Wake up, fans of “The Sandman,” we’ve got some Season 2 news for you: The Netflix adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s epic graphic novel series has cast the final three siblings in the “Endless Family” of Tom Sturridge’s Dream — Esmé Creed-Miles as Delirium, Adrian Lester as Destiny and Barry Sloane as “The Prodigal.”
In “The Sandman” comic book series, The Prodigal is the estranged Endless sibling named Destruction, but Netflix has taken care to label Sloane’s role as “The Prodigal,” which is the way the character is referred to throughout the first volumes of the story. The three new castings point to “The Sandman” Season 2 covering the graphic novel’s iconic installment, “Season of Mists.”
The trio of new “The Sandman” Season 2 actors will join the Endless siblings returning from Season 1: Death (Kirby), Desire (Mason Alexander Park), Despair (Donna Preston) and Dream, The Sandman himself.

‘The Sandman’ Returns To Production Post-Strike On Comic Series’ 35th Anniversay; First On-Set Photo
Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman is back in production on Season 2 following the Hollywood strikes, on the 35th anniversary of the original comic series.
Gaiman released a letter Wednesday announcing the production re-start for the Netflix series, along with a behind-the-scenes photo from the set featuring Tom Sturridge (Dream) and Mason Alexander Park (Desire). The Warner Bros. Television production is currently filming in London. You can see the photo below along with Gaiman’s letter.

This post contains spoilers for the first five volumes of the "Sandman" comics, and will most likely spoil events for the upcoming second season of the show.
It's going to be a while before season 2 of "The Sandman" drops on Netflix, which means we've got plenty of time to speculate on what's going to happen. For fans of the comics, we've already got a pretty good idea: we're definitely going to see the events of "Season of Mists" adapted on-screen, which is bound to be a fun time. We'll get to meet Delirium and Destiny, we'll get to watch as demons escape into the mortal world, and we'll get to see Gwendoline Christie's Lucifer start her own piano bar in Los Angeles. It's gonna be a good time.
What's less certain is the adaptation of "A Game of You." Although we're sure the show has no plans of skipping...

This post contains spoilers for The Sandman Season One
In some ways, the Netflix adaptation of The Sandman is not too different from other popular television shows. It told a satisfying story across its first season, one that saw Morpheus aka Dream (Tom Sturridge) stop renegade nightmare the Corinthian (Boyd Holbrook) and deal with living dream vortex Rose Walker (Kyo Ra). Along the way, it laid the groundwork for future storylines, including the division between Dream and his sibling Desire (Mason Alexander Park) and a rivalry with Lucifer (Gwendoline Christie), ruler of Hell.
When series such of these get renewed for another season, as The Sandman recently has, it’s natural for fans to speculate about how the show will develop these plot threads. But because The Sandman adapts a long-since completed comic book series, fans have a clearer picture of how future stories will play out.
The rumours are true.

Netflix has renewed The Sandman starring Tom Sturridge as Dream and Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer for a second season. Netflix didn’t confirm the plot or number of season two episodes but did offer this tease of the new season:
“When last we left Dream (Sturridge) and his friends and foes, the forces of hell were on the move, led by Lucifer themself (Christie). The new episodes of the series will dive into that conflict and continue to explore the many challenges facing the universe in the wake of Morpheus’ century-long absence.”
The series is based on the popular DC comic series written by Neil Gaiman and was developed by Gaiman, David S. Goyer, and Allan Heinberg. All three are involved as writers and executive producers, with Heinberg also guiding the series as showrunner.

“The Sandman” is returning to Netflix. The streaming platform has officially renewed the Neil Gaiman series based on the DC Comics universe, expanding the franchise with new episodes based on other stories from the graphic novels.
Leading up to Wednesday’s evening announcement, there was rampant speculation among Netflix subscribers about whether “The Sandman” would be renewed or was even canceled, despite its success, even leading Gaiman to dispute a tweet from a fan account online. And while Netflix has renewed “The Sandman,” it’s not exactly coming back for a Season 2, as the show will focus on other aspects of the conflict between Dream and the forces of Hell, exploring the many challenges facing the universe in the wake of Morpheus’ century-long absence. The number of episodes and all plot specifics have been kept under wraps to this point.

Now that Netflix’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman is out and has been a hit (and has a bonus animated and live-action episode!), why not get to know the person behind Rose Walker, whose connection to Dream (Tom Sturridge) surprised them both, Vanesu Samunyai? When the cast stopped by TV Insider and TV Guide Magazine’s studio, sponsored by Hollywood unBranded, at San Diego Comic-Con, to discuss the series and introduce their characters, we took the chance to do just that, asking Samunyai about her favorite activities, qualities in herself and others, and more. If she wasn’t acting, Samunyai imagines she’d stay in the same kind of space. “I’d still be doing something creative,” she shares. “Maybe writing, singing, dancing.” Speaking of music, she counts putting some on and meditation among the ways she likes to relax. But when it comes to doing things,...

This year “Succession” swept the drama guest acting Emmy nominations, nabbing seven of the 12 available slots. I thought about that while watching “The Sandman” on Netflix. It’s a supernatural fantasy drama based on a comic book series by Neil Gaiman, the type of TV show that might not normally get on awards voters’ radar even in an era when genre shows like “Game of Thrones” and “Watchmen” collect trophies left and right. Sure the sterling crafts of “The Sandman” may be major players in the year to come, but allow me to make a case for the actors who already make a strong case for sweeping next year’s guest acting races. Despite the impressive viewership numbers, it's still not clear if "The Sandman" will get a second season. If it does, it's also not clear how much of the Neil Gaiman comics they'll be adapting. Based off of season 1, the most likely route they'll take is covering "Season of Mists" in the first half of season 2, then "A Game of You" in the second half, with maybe an episode or two in the middle covering some one-off adventures from "Dream Country" and "Fables & Reflections."
When asked if he would consider writing an original story for the show, Gaiman responded, "Yes," but followed it up with the caveat that he's painfully aware of how much material the show needs to get through. "We have 2,600 pages to go," he said, mentioning that in addition to the original 10 volumes of the series, he hopes to adapt the extra volumes "Overture," "Dream Hunters" and "Endless Nights.

July saw many adapted stories head to screens both large and small, sourced from novels, comic books and more, and August is no different with a bevy of book adaptations on the horizon.
Last month gave us adaptations of Delia Owens’ wildly popular novel “Where the Crawdads Sing” , Mark Greaney’s spy thriller “The Gray Man” and in series form “Paper Girls” on Prime Video starring Ali Wong and Jason Mantzoukas.
August also has a slate of book adaptations landing in theaters and on streamers. Two of them came from graphic novels, and one might sound familiar to fans of George R. R. Martin and “Game of Thrones.” For kids, there is the final season of “Locke & Key” as well as “Lost Ollie” which comes from “Ollie’s Odyssey.”

Neil Gaiman was seen getting chummy with all the actors who brought his characters to life on the red carpet of The Sandman, a Netflix series based on his acclaimed comic books which will release on August 5.
The show had its World Premiere in London at BFI Southbank.
From left to right, Allan Heinberg, Vivienne Acheampong, Gaiman, Tom Sturridge, Gwendolyn Christie and Vanesu Samunyai were gathered here for this photo op. Sturridge will star in the series as Morpheus, king of the land of Dreaming who has to restore his world to order after over a century in captivity.
The Sandman is finally seeing the light of day after being stuck in “Development Hell,” since ideas for an adaptation were first discussed way back in 1991.
In what must have been an agonizing process for Gaiman, a film version of his comics nearly came to be in 2013 with Joseph Gordon-Levitt set to star,...

This post contains spoilers for the "Sandman" comics.
Among many of the most unsettling moments in season 1 of "The Sandman" is the revelation that Dream (Tom Sturridge), the all-powerful being who controls the dream realm, has plans to take away Lyta's (Razane Jammal) baby. "The baby was conceived in the Dreaming," he explains to her, but it would've been nice if he'd explained the situation in a bit more detail. With Rose (Vanesu Samunyai) no longer having the powers of a vortex, there doesn't seem to be anything stopping Dream from taking Lyta's child one day. The only question is when.

After years of development, “The Sandman” has arrived. Neil Gaiman’s beloved graphic novel series now exists as a Netflix series, with Gaiman serving as co-creator and executive producer on the show. Many fans weren’t sure if this day would ever come given how difficult Gaiman’s books are to adapt, with “The Sandman” at one point planned as a movie to be directed by and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Tom Sturridge fills the titular role in this iteration of the story, which finds Dream imprisoned for a century and busting out to find his kingdom in ruins. He then sets out on a journey that puts him in contact with friends and foes alike, learning to better understand humanity in the process.

Of all the graphic novel adaptations to hit the small screen this year, “The Sandman,” based on the Neil Gaiman and Sam Keith series published by DC Comics’ now defunct Vertigo imprint, is one of Netflix’s most anticipated. Spanning seven years and 75 issues, the Sandman universe chronicles The Endless, a dysfunctional family of siblings that anthropomorphize Delirium, Desire, Despair, Destiny, Destruction, Death, and Dreams.
The first season of Netflix’s “The Sandman” primarily focuses on Morpheus, The King of Dreams (Tom Sturridge), his attendants, Lucienne (Vivienne Acheampong), the librarian who catalogs all of human existence, and Matthew (Patton Oswald), a talking raven. He serves as Dream’s eyes and ears in the waking world. However, when Morpheus unexpectedly disappears, leaving the Dreaming unattended for a century, his realm and humanity are left vulnerable.

In an episode of Netflix’s new drama The Sandman, two characters discuss a shared fondness for the works of William Shakespeare. One of them objects to a recent King Lear production that drastically altered the story, while the other assures him, “The great stories will always return to their original forms.”
The latter sentiment is the key to understanding both the assets and challenges of making a TV series out of a comic book long held as one of the medium’s greatest, but also one of its most unadaptable.

“The Sandman” series, adapted from Neil Gaiman’s 1989 comic series — co-created by Sam Keith and Mike Dringenberg — will creep into consciousness in the first week of August. The ten-episode series follows the story of The Dream King Morpheus, a powerful being aiming to correct past mistakes he made, both cosmically and more minutely.
Names behind the television interpretation of the DC comic include Allan Heinberg as showrunner, executive producer and writer, as well as David S. Goyer and Neil Gaiman as executive producers and writers. Many minds have combined to produce a series that walks between dream and waking worlds.
Fans of the comic, Gaiman and/or the sprawling ensemble cast may be wondering how to watch the haunting story, and the answers are pretty simple.

To celebrate the eagerly-anticipated release of The Sandman, Netflix’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s legendary comic-book series, we had the pleasure of chatting to its creator, filmmakers, and extraordinary cast who help bring the much-loved series to life for the first time.
There is another world that waits for all of us when we close our eyes and sleep — a place called the Dreaming, where The Sandman, Master of Dreams (Tom Sturridge), gives shape to all of our deepest fears and fantasies. But when Dream is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for a century, his absence sets off a series of events that will change both the dreaming and waking worlds forever. To restore order, Dream must journey across different worlds and timelines to mend the mistakes he’s made during his vast existence, revisiting old friends and foes, and meeting new entities — both cosmic and human — along the way.

Few non-superhero comics are as beloved as Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman,” so expectations were high when Netflix brought its upcoming TV show based on the series to San Diego Comic-Con. But based on early footage, the adaptation is off to a good start.
The panel featured sneak previews of several important scenes. First, they showed David Thewlis as a foreboding figure that strikes up a conversation with his server at a remote diner. Then viewers got a peek at Tom Sturridge as Morpheus and Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine in a scene where the latter performs a wedding that quickly turns into an exorcism. Finally, fans got a look at an iconic scene from the comics, where Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) sits next to Morpheus and calls him “literally the stupidest, most self-centered, appallingest excuse for an anthropomorphic personification on this or any other planet.”

“The Sandman” is almost here to wake you up. Netflix released a new trailer for the TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s iconic graphic novel series during the show’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con Saturday.
In the video, which comes just under two weeks out from the series’ Aug. 5 premiere, Tom Sturridge’s Sandman, who more commonly goes by Dream, is facing some true walking nightmares while sorting through the chaos brought on the world by the Corinthian (Boyd Holbrook) and Lucifer (Gwendoline Christie). The former is a monstrous being that looks like a man with no eyes, a creature of Dream’s own making, that is wandering the waking world terrorizing it. The latter is, of course, the devil itself. They are just two of many obstacles Dream has to overcome in an attempt to restore order to the universe — both the dreaming and awakened versions.

“The Sandman,” Netflix’s highly anticipated adaptation of the critically-acclaimed fantasy comic book series, will premiere Aug. 5.
The news was announced out of a Netflix Geeked Week panel that featured the cast and producers of the series and was moderated by Felicia Day. In addition to the date announcement, the panel also unveiled a new teaser for the upcoming series.
The teaser shows the main character Morpheus (Tom Sturridge), or Dream, the king and personification of dreams and all that is not reality, as he is trapped and imprisoned by a group of sorcerers. In the mythology of the show, Dream is one of the Endless, a group of seven beings that represent natural forces or aspects such as Death or Desire. The trailer follow Dream as he escapes from captivity and returns to his realm, only to find that it has fallen to disrepair in his years held captive.
