He’s photographed naked women for Roger Corman, made a movie called Mutant Vampire Zombies from the Hood!, helmed an Asylum mockbuster that spawned a major studio lawsuit, nearly made a mega blockbuster for a major studio, and, best of all, his name really is Thunder.
With The Asylum’s lawsuit-inspiring mockbuster American Warships premiering on Syfy this weekend (May 19th at 9/8 Central) and hitting DVD shelves next week (May 22nd), I chatted with its writer-director, Thunder Levin, about the trials and tribulations of making an Asylum mockbuster, graduating from the school of Corman, and navigating the pitfalls of the b-movie scene filmmaking.
Foy: Forgive me. I have to ask a question you’ve no doubt been asked many times before. Your first name is really Thunder? That’s not just a nickname?
Thunder: (sigh) Yeah, I’ve been asked that a few times before. Yes, Thunder is my real name.

Of all the upcoming blockbusters for The Asylum to do a mockbuster of, I commend the gutsy call made to ride the coattails of one that has already been the subject of much snickering and eye-rolling. Then again, they’re used to snickering and eye-rolling. But by hiring Sonny Spoon and Apollo Creed, their American Battleship already has the cooler cast.
He’s nearly been eaten by Jaws, been beheaded by a Highlander, played a werewolf cop, and co-starred in and directed New Jack City. Now Mario Van Peebles enters The Asylum to board an American Battleship to save the planet from alien invaders.
Those aliens have even bigger problems because Apollo Creed himself, Carl Weathers, is also onboard, and you just know after how things ended for him in Predator, he’s got a chip on his one remaining shoulder when it comes to fighting aliens.

One haunted flick we've been curious about for a while now has been Amanda Gusack's cinéma-vérité style spooker, In Memorium. Finally, after years in development and a successful online viewing of the film's first sixteen minutes, the whole enchilada is available for public consumption.
Written and directed by Gusack, produced by Lydia Cedrone and Meredith Freeman, and starring Erik McDowell, Johanna Watts, Levi Powell, and Mary Portser, In Memorium is streaming right now on IndieFlix.com.
Inspired in part by The Blair Witch Project, In Memorium centers on a struggling filmmaker who rents a house with his girlfriend to document his final days after a diagnosis of terminal cancer. He installs motion-triggered security cameras in every room to capture their lives without invasion. But an invasion of a different sort is captured on the footage--an inexplicable presence in the house. Immediately afterward, things become terrifying.

Once upon a time, long, long ago and very far away, it was a dark and stormy night. An aspiring filmmaker (Amanda Gusack) who started out working for craft services and had seen The Blair Witch Project and maybe some Japanese horror stuff, sprouted her own movie idea. But even though she got her film made, it premiered at the Hamptons Film Festival and was well received both critically and by audiences, distribution was never obtained. Everybody sigh and say, "bummer." But wait! It's almost Halloween, a time of resurrection, rebirth and renewal. Or maybe that's Easter -- I can't keep up with all the holiday meanings. Whatever it signifies, Halloween shall bring this film new life. Never mind November 2nd; this Halloween, we the people can bring about real change. You've heard the horror stories from both sides -- this group is going to ruin the country; that group...

The success of the Paranormal Activity franchise has done a lot of good for not only our genre but for the indie filmmakers working within it. Case in point - Amanda Gusack's cinéma-vérité style spooker, In Memorium.
The project has been literally in limbo for the past five years, but now as a means to re-ignite the promotional flames, you'll be able to watch the first sixteen minutes of the movie over on InMemoriumTheMovie.com all day this coming Halloween!
"Upon Paranormal Activity’S release in 2009, whispers on internet message boards birthed comparisons to an earlier docu-horror—a 2005 microbudget film, entitled In Memorium. John Cooper of atomicpopcorn described it as a “creepy horror film with great jump scares, standing toe-to-toe with Paranormal Activity and knocking that film off its feet.”

Is it possible to hold a film like Amanda Gusack’s In Memorium in a truly objective, critical light after seeing Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity? I would have to say probably not, considering that’s the first question I asked myself when sitting down to write this.
But here’s the thing: In Memorium, a haunting film that spans only a little over an hour, shot on a minuscule budget and released in 2005 to only a few film festivals and audiences, contains many of the elements that Paranormal Activity hinges upon. In fact, the main arc of the narrative is exactly the same: couple moves into house, sets up cameras to record paranormal activities, proceed to be haunted and scared to death. It begs the question of whether Peli was seated at one of those festivals, watching the show go on.
That said, In Memorium certainly has a leg...

With the success of Paranormal Activity , you can expect to hear about another dozen or so similar projects. Just this morning, we did a news post on a UK project titled The Possession of David O'Reilly , which bares a resemblance to Oren Peli's sleeper hit. Ever heard of In Memorium ? The low-budget indie pic starring Erik McDowell, Johanna Watts, Levi Powell and Mary Portser dates back to 2005, a few years before Paranormal Activity . Written and directed by Amanda Gusack, this cinéma vérité film follows Dennis Wade, a young film student diagnosed with terminal cancer who decides to document his illness only to capture something else on tape. Have a peek at the teaser trailer below. Gusack recently directed The Betrayed starring Melissa George and...
