For over 25 years, the San Francisco Silent Film Festival called the Castro Theatre home. With the iconic theater now closed for a year-plus-long renovation, Sfsff has relocated to the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre, located in a beautiful park created for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition at the north edge of the Presidio. The auditorium, primarily a performance space, seats nearly a thousand and features a spacious foyer where passholders could visit and relax between shows (particularly useful on chilly weekends).
Sfsff prides itself on mixing landmark productions and audience favorites with rediscoveries, revelations, and rarities, often recently uncovered and restored. And for its 27th edition this year, the festival presented 20 features and six short films over five days, all with live musical scores by some of the finest silent film accompanists in the world.
The opening night film, Albert Parker’s 1926 swashbuckler The Black Pirate, certainly qualifies as both landmark and favorite.

Earlier today, we took a look back the Wes Craven-directed 2005 thriller Red Eye… so we figured, why not follow that up by taking a look at a remake of a Craven horror film that was released the year after Red Eye reached theatres? The movie we’re taking about is the 2006 version of The Hills Have Eyes (watch it Here), a remake of Craven’s 1977 classic. It’s time for this one to be revisited, and you can hear all about it in the embed above.
While the original film was written and directed by Craven, Alexandre Aja directed the remake from a screenplay he wrote with Grégory Levasseur. Here’s the synopsis: Bob Carter and his wife Ethel, along with five other members of the family, are heading for San Diego with their camper van. An accident strands them in the desert and while two of the men go for help,...

Drew Barrymore is a child of Hollywood royalty and a Golden Globe winning actress whose career has spanned nearly her entire life, making her first credited screen performance at the age of three. But how many of her titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Barrymore was born to a celebrated acting family though she never really knew her famous ancestors. Her grandfather was John Barrymore, star of “Grand Hotel”, “Twentieth Century” and “Dinner at Eight” among others. She is also the great grand niece of Oscar winners Lionel Barrymore and Ethel Barrymore. Lionel won one of the earliest Oscars as Best Actor for “A Free Soul” in 1931 but is probably best remembered as the villainous Mr. Potter of the Christmas classic “It’s a Wonderful Life.” His sister Ethel won the 1945 Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “None but the Lonely Heart...

White House hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced on Monday a decision to switch parties in his presidential bid by exiting the Democratic party and running as a third party Independent. The move — revealed during a rally held outside the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia that featured remarks by his actress wife Cheryl Hines of Curb Your Enthusiasm fame — was quickly denounced by members of his own family.
“The decision of our brother Bobby to run as a third party candidate against Joe Biden is dangerous to our country. Bobby might share the same name as our father, but he does not share the same values, vision or judgment. Today’s announcement is deeply saddening for us. We denounce his candidacy and believe it to be perilous for our country,” reads a post shared on Instagram by his sister, Oscar nominated documentarian Rory Kennedy.

The truth of the Killer Milkman has been revealed, Riverdale fans.
After months of mysterious deaths and control from the adults, their secrets came crumbling down on Riverdale Season 7 Episode 18. A tidal wave of revelations and victories left this town shaking in its boots.
But with this being the third remaining episode of the series, did the reveal make its big landing? Or did it bubble over like curdled milk?
"Chapter One Hundred Thirty-Five: For A Better Tomorrow" was a jam-packed chapter that made up for lost time.
With so little time left in Riverdale Season 7, the momentum kicked into overdrive to unravel some long-standing mysteries. And in one case, a secret we didn't even know was happening under the surface.
Before we get into the three main stories, we need to call out the exciting style change within the episode.
Shifting scenes from color to black and white was very evocative.

An unusual family lives an unusual life in Mark H. Rapaport’s Hippo, one of the stranger films playing at this year’s Fantasia Film Festival. Rapaport drops us into a suburban dystopic home where society’s rules don’t seem to apply, and no subject is too taboo to elicit nervous laughter. Hippo (Kimball Farley) and his Hungarian adopted sister Buttercup (Lilla Kizlinger) share a troubling relationship with each other and their mother, Ethel (Eliza Roberts), as they approach adulthood wholly unprepared for the world outside their doors. A young man on the verge of adulthood, Hippo is an odd duck. He spends his days playing video games, bossing around his mother, and searching for automatic weapons on the internet. It’s the late ‘90s, two of these three...

Lucy and Ricky Ricardo lived on East 68th Street in the Lenox Hill neighborhood of Manhattan when I Love Lucy fans met the couple in 1951. Their one-bedroom apartment was spacious and comfortable. The eat-in kitchen, large living room, and generous bedroom were laid out in a traditional railroad style. Even today, the large one-bedroom apartment would be the envy of most Manhattan residents. Do you know how much Lucy and Ricky Ricardo paid in rent?
Lucy and Ricky Ricardo paid $125 per month for their apartment in ‘I Love Lucy’
Ethel and Fred Mertz were more than just landlords to Ricky and Lucy Ricardo. The two couples grew to be close friends. The landlords were so deeply attached to the duo and their young son that Lucy and Ricky signed a 99-year lease on the abode during I Love Lucy. Lucy and Ricky Ricardo’s rent was a reasonable 125 per month.

The race is on to win the Miss Riverdale Teen Dream pageant.
No RuPaul's Drag Race judges were needed on Riverdale Season 7 Episode 15. The drama was upfront on camera and backstage for who would snatch the crown.
It's another '50s-inspired tale for the teens of Riverdale 1955. A campy pageant plot is all fun and good, but it can't distract us from asking: what happened to the murder mystery part of Riverdale Season 7?
"Chapter One Hundred Thirty-Two: Miss Teen Riverdale" sometimes felt like a different show. A chapter that would be closer to the original Archie Comics than an episode of the dark and eerie Riverdale.
As this new reboot has gone on, those murder mystery elements have gone away. If you compared this chapter to Riverdale Season 1 Episode 1, it would be like night and day. It doesn't feel like Riverdale anymore.

Halloween has arrived in our dark little town on Riverdale Season 7 Episode 11. Though from the way the adults dismissed it, you would think it was the town from Footloose.
Still, nothing could hold back all the spooky celebrations.
Costumes, a creepy cemetery, a murderous milkman, and a musical number were all on tap for the night. Is it a trick for Halloween? No, it's a Riverdale treat.
For a dark and creepy series like Riverdale, Halloween is the holiday most up their alley. Between the killers and the supernatural, most chapters feel like Halloween.
"Halloween II" embraced the fun-loving spirit of the season, and it reignited what the town sorely missed from the day. There was drama, but everyone seemed to get in on the tricks.
Like Veronica's ghost show event at the Babylonium.
Only Veronica Lodge could hear about the deaths of four Riverdale High students and use it for business gain.

Since she first appeared in "E.T." when she was just 7 years old, Drew Barrymore has been a beloved fixture in the entertainment industry. Films like "Never Been Kissed" and "Charlie's Angels" solidified her star power, and she's started a new chapter as the host of "The Drew Barrymore Show," which kicked off in September 2020.
Over the years, Drew's candid, vulnerable conversation style has helped her interviews stand out on her talk show. She's been able to connect with people like Brooke Shields about the sexualization they both faced as child stars, and in particular, Drew's openness about the struggles she faced with her parents during her youth has allowed her to bond with stars with similar backgrounds, like Jennette McCurdy.

It's been 22 years since Rob Cohen directed a shameless knockoff of Kathryn Bigelow's "Point Break," starring Paul Walker instead of Keanu Reeves, Vin Diesel instead of Patrick Swayze, and street racing instead of surfing and sky diving. And while at the time, the success of the film "The Fast and the Furious" seemed only vaguely remarkable, over the course of the last two decades it has ballooned into a multi-billion dollar franchise, full of epic car stunts, ludicrous storylines, and endless ruminations about the meaning of "family."
Yes, "Fast and Furious" has become a household name, perhaps permanently associated with the blockbuster vehicular nonsense films of Vin Diesel and company. But it was not always this way. The common expression "fast and furious" has been used many times in Hollywood, for films about race car driving, funny murder mysteries, beloved Looney Tunes adventures, and low-budget crime thrillers.

Teresa Giudice is the only original Real Housewives of New Jersey cast member still standing. Way before feuding with Melissa Gorga and Margaret Josephs, Giudice had a huge rift with Og castmate Jacqueline Laurita. But now, the two are friends again.
The first few seasons of Rhonj were a Manzo family affair. The housewives included Caroline Manzo, her sister Dina Manzo (now Dina Cantin), and sister-in-law Laurita. Rounding out the cast were Giudice and Danielle Staub.

The first half of the 20th century is often referred to as the Golden Age of Hollywood. But this distinction overlooks the abusive conditions forced upon actors of all ages. Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney were given large amounts of drugs to keep up with their intense shooting schedule when they were still children. Both actors had historic careers in the industry, but they were also damaged by these experiences in heartbreaking ways.
