Writing and directing a short is a potential passageway to creating a full-length feature film.
Aspiring directors use this medium to create a proof of concept on a small budget that can go on to win on the short film festival circuit and be picked up by investors, leading to larger projects and paving the way to a career in Hollywood.
Shorts are not uncommon to be made as proof of concept for a feature film, especially by first-time directors. Multiple Oscar-nominated actor Bradley Cooper, for example, had to prove to the studio heads that he was capable of directing A Star Is Born, also starring Lady Gaga, in 2019 by creating a short.
The box office hit Smile, directed by Parker Finn, is a recent success story of how a short can go on to launch a career. Finn’s short film for Smile initially titled Laura Hasn’t Slept...

With more than 240 million monthly viewers, Vimeo has grown into one of the best online platforms for filmmakers to share their work with the world and discover other talented artists. The site’s flagship channel, Vimeo Staff Picks, features the best videos on Vimeo, and is billed as a “never-ending film festival” that runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
The benefit of a Staff Pick can be getting your short film, music video or other short form work seen by production companies, advertising agencies and brands looking for emerging talent. Filmmaker Patrick Jean’s short film “Pixels” was chosen as a Staff Pick, went viral, and attracted the attention of Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions, which hired Patrick to direct the feature-length version. Though Happy Madison ultimately brought Chris Columbus on board to direct, Patrick stayed on as an executive producer and co-writer of the script.
Timelapse cinematographer Drew Geraci’s “District Nights” similarly landed him a job shooting the opening credits sequence for Netflix’s “House of Cards,” while Daniel Mercadante’s two-minute short “Laughs” led to Volkswagen hiring him to shoot a second version for a TV commercial. Other Staff Picks alumni who have gained critical exposure through Vimeo include “Swiss Army Man” co-directors the Daniels (12 Staff Picks) and “Kong: Skull Island” filmmaker Jordan Vogt-Roberts (2 Staff Picks).

Curated by a five-person in-house team, Staff Picks is comprised of the core verticals of Drama, Comedy, Action Sports and Documentary, and also includes Music Video, Animation, Travel and Eye Candy. Vimeo selects around four Staff Picks per day and features the videos on its homepage. Out of the tens of millions of videos uploaded to Vimeo on a yearly basis, roughly 1,000 are chosen as Staff Picks. The site also selects around 10 “Best of the Month” videos per month.
Though Staff Picks are free to watch, Vimeo on Demand offers filmmakers a way to monetize their work via a 90/10 split, with 90 percent of revenue going to the creators. Launched in 2013, the site’s VOD content features more than 50,000 videos with more than 1 million paying customers. If a filmmaker wants to earn revenue off of his or her Vimeo Staff Pick, the film can be moved to the subscription-only platform.
So how can you secure a coveted Vimeo Staff Picks badge for your film? Here are five key factors paraphrased from a presentation by Meghan Oretsky, one of the company’s five curators, during an event at the company’s New York office.
Exceptional craft
Staff Picks should look good and sound amazing, but filmmakers should also ask themselves whether their work innovates and pushes the medium to a new level. Check out “Analogue Loaders” by from Raphael Vangelis.
Conversation starting
To get people talking about a short film, it should present provocative ideas and visuals that ideally appeal to a millennial audience. Vimeo knows a video is a winner when the curators anticipate it being shared and sparking conversations amongst friends. Check out “Black Holes” by Noodles.
Engaging storytelling
Stories should draw the viewer in, elicit an emotional response and ultimately be something that people want to the share with their friends. A good example is the short film “Con Amor” by Cole Webley.
Originality
Vimeo creators should have a unique style and story. A good question to ask is, have we seen this story told time and time again? If so, are they bringing any new ideas or a new voice to the genre? Check out Ilya Naishuller’s music video for Leningrad’s “Kolshick.”

Vimeo’s curators attend niche festivals in order to find content from female filmmakers, the Lgbtq community, people with disabilities, the indigenous community and more. Check out David M. Helman’s music video for Michael Kiwanuka “Cold Little Heart.”

Going strong for 36 years, the Razzie Awards once again highlighted the worst projects and poorest talent in the entertainment industry with the announcement of the 2016 winners.

Along the same lines, “Fifty Shades” costars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson received the Worst Actor and Worst Actress titles, respectively.

Yeah, yeah, the Oscars were last night, congratulations to Leonardo DiCaprio and Spotlight and all, celebration of quality filmmaking, whatever. Let's look at the winners of what really matters: the Razzies! As is tradition, the Razzie winners were announced the night before the Oscar ceremony. No big surprises here: Fifty Shades of Grey took home most of the "prizes" though Fantastic Four took home a few big ones as well. Both movies tied for Worst Picture. And while Eddie Redmayne may have lost out on the Oscar to DiCaprio, he did get a Razzie for Worst Supporting Actor for Jupiter Ascending. Congratulations, Eddie! You can find the full list of winners below, and it's hard not to argue with the results, which I have bolded. These movies were just awful. Do you agree or disagree with the winners?

The Razzie Awards have actually managed to stake their claim on a part of the film world now, with their yearly release not going unnoticed by anyone, and this despite the fact that you too can vote for them, as long as you buy in.
This year was bound to be dominated by the biggest winners, because no movie managed more universal hatred than Fifty Shades of Grey (and those who hated it weren’t always waiting for the release), unless it was Fantastic Four and it’s director outrage kurfuffle (he managed his own award as well).
Many of the other awards were largely foregone conclusions as well, mainly because Kevin James, Adam Sandler, and The Chipmunks made movies… or whatever.
Still, worst movies and performances make for tricky voting. It’s hard to pick among the nominees sometimes, which explains the dual win for overall worst picture, but...

While Hollywood is getting ready to celebrate itself with the Oscars, we must not forgot those films that were absolutely shite. Thankfully for the 36th year in a row The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation has shined a light on the best of the worst announcing the winners for the Razzie Awards 2016.
There was tough competition but the big "winners" were '50 Shades of Grey' and 'The Fantastic Four' reboot. However the real winner of the night was all time razzi champ Sylvester Stallone who took home the Razzie Redeemer award for his work in 'Creed.'

While most of the Tinseltown contingent is busy handing out trophies and pats on the back, the Razzies judges are releasing their picks for the entertainment industry’s weakest work over the past year.
The 2016 Razzies nominees include some pretty obvious mentions, such as Worst Picture picks “Fifty Shades of Grey,” “Fantastic Four,” “Jupiter Ascending,” “Pixels,” and “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2.”
Actually, “Fifty Shades” also earned nods for director Sam Taylor-Johnson and stars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, with six nominations in total.

It's the day before the Oscar nominations are announced, and that means Razzies! Yes, the nominees for the awards that celebrate the best of the worst have been announced. Not too many surprises this year: "Fifty Shades of Grey," "Jupiter Ascending," and "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2" led the pack with six nominations each. Really the only surprise was that "Mortdecai" wasn't up there with them (it only got three noms). Oh, and that Julianne Moore was nominated. I didn't see "Seventh Son" but I can't imagine that she was bad enough in it to be considered one of the worst performances this year. She's Julianne Moore! And dubious congratulations are in order for Kevin James, who was nominated in several acting categories for his work last year. Winners will be announced on February 27 -- as always, the night before the Oscars are handed out. Worst Picture "Fantastic Four" "Fifty Shades of Grey...

Yes, it's that time of the year again! The day before Hollywood pats itself on the back with Oscar nominations, the Razzies show up to remind everyone why Hollywood deserves a few raspberries with the champagne.
Besides as Jean-Ralphio could tell you, there's nothing more fun than honoring the wooooorst:
This year, there's a four-way tie for the dubious honor of most Razzie Award nominations: "Fifty Shades of Grey," "Pixels," "Jupiter Ascending," and "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2" got six nods. That, at least, is some small consolation for "Fantastic Four," which walked away with "only" five nominations. And "Pan," "Mortdecai," and "Human Centipede 3" were seriously let off the hook. (Hook -- get it? The worst!)
Here's an exciting note: Eddie Redmayne has a chance to win both an Oscar and a Razzie in the same year, since the reigning Best Actor winner will probably be nominated again for "The Danish Girl...

Ok, let’s get this out of the way first. During my bathroom trip following a screening of Pixels, a group of what I can only term lads yelled across the room about how good a time they’d just had. This quickly turned, as it so often does in the men’s room, into playful jibes about one another’s penis size and other things I tried to tune out as my shy bladder receded ever further into my body. One of the group even went so far as to sidle up to his friend still using the urinal – leaning on me in the process – in some kind of bonding ritual I’m not quite familiar with. The multiplexes are full of sequels for obscure superheroes. The high street is dominated by t-shirts adorned with obscure movie references. The most watched TV show in the Us is about a bunch of nerds. Yes, it sure looks like the geeks have inherited the Earth.

'Pixels' movie weekend box office: Adam Sandler vs. 'Ant-Man' Despite its underwhelming domestic box office debut last weekend, Marvel's Ant-Man may turn out to be the winner in North America this weekend (July 24–26, '15) thanks to another underwhelming debut: that of the Adam Sandler Pixels movie. According to weekend box office projections found at Variety, the Chris Columbus-directed Pixels is expected to open with $25 million from 3,723 locations – following a $10 million Friday take (including $1.5M from Thursday previews). If so, that'll place Adam Sandler's latest lowbrow comedy – now in 3D – on a par with Sandler domestic disappointments like Jack and Jill and Funny People. Deadline.com, for its part, is expecting $27-$28 million by Sunday evening. Sat., July 25, update: According to studio box office estimates, Pixels underperformed on Friday, taking in $9.2 million. That's below figures for Jack and Jill and, adjusted for...

Notable: This film is based on a 2010 short film by French director Patrick Jean and distributed by One More Productions.
Adam Sandler has once again rounded up some of his friends to stand in front of a camera and say word. Kevin James plays the president of the United States in all his fat/schlubby glory and has a hot wife (Jane Krakowski). If that were say Melissa McCarthy and her husband was Clive Owen, people would shit themselves over pointing out the “flaw” there. But we know it is typical Happy Madison ideas to have sexualized female roles right alongside guys in sweat pants. This movie is a metaphor for sweatpants. It’s lazy and worn out in the crotch.

The King of Kong: Columbus Peddles Dopey Sandler Comedy
Hailing from some parallel universe where Never Never Land must be the capital is Pixels, a Chris Columbus directed Adam Sandler comedy pasted together by his usual writer, Tim Herlihy and returning collaborator Timothy Dowling (Just Go With It, 2011). If there’s anyone to pity here, it’s Patrick Jean, the director of the 2010 short film upon which this concept is based. As far as Sandler’s handlers go, it’s uncertain who or what this feature length version is geared towards, a family friendly package severely dumbed down for the enjoyment of today’s tots yet emblazoned with obsolete video games two generations removed from the only audience members unoffended by the laziness and stupidity of the final product. Though some supporting players escape less scathed by this misbegotten lump of a film, Sandler and co. seem tone deaf...

As Adam Sandler comedy Pixels hits UK cinemas, the director of the original short shares his thoughts on the feature adaptation...
So the reviews are coming in, and it's fair to say that critics haven't warmed to the Adam Sandler retro gaming comedy, Pixels. One reviewer was even left in an explosive apoplexy of rage (you have been warned).
As you may already know, Pixels began as a short film directed by the French artist and moviemaker, Patrick Jean. The two-and-a-bit minute film was such a hit that news of it soon spread to Hollywood, where Jean began working it up into a feature.
That feature concept wound up at Happy Maddison, the production company of one Adam Sandler, where the project grew and Jean was replaced as director by the more seasoned Chris Columbus, the chap behind things like Home Alone, Mrs Doubtfire and a brace of Harry Potters.

Even as an Adam Sandler/Kevin James-vehicle, Pixels deserves to be more inspired. The arcade-loving, '80s-centric action-comedy transitioned to the big screen from Patrick Jean's inventive world-domination-by-8-bits short film wields the fine set pieces, tech resources and token-required games to earn a top score. But Sandler and his team don't even attempt to advance to the next level, constantly drawing on the comedian's trademark sophomoric cheat codes to hastily produce what's essentially the poor man's Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, global-annihilation movie. Make no mistake: this is a Happy Madison production through-and-through. Minus extensive pratfall jokes with James or unnecessary Rob Schneider or Steve Buscemi pop-ups, almost every check mark from the Sandler production list is marked. Cheap insults directed towards one physical trait from different supporting charactersc Check. Sandler getting the out-of-his-league girl (in this case, Michelle Monaghan) because he's our main slubby do-gooderc You bet.

Video game adaptations have always been Hollywood kryptonite, but Pixels isn’t quite a video game adaptation – it’s a sci-fi homage to the classic ’80s arcade games that gobbled all your hard earned quarters without remorse. And by “sci-fi homage,” I mean that filmmaker Patrick Jean created a nifty little short about pixels taking over New York City, team Happy Madison gave it a feature-film treatment, and this steaming pile of nostalgia porn is the result. It’s baffling how a movie built on virtual entertainment could have the absolute life sucked out of it – but not even the likes of Q*Bert, Donkey Kong or Pac-Man can find an extra life for Pixels, no matter how hard they try.

There are mild amusements to be found in Pixels. Nostalgia oozes from every cinematic pore, as director Chris Columbus weaves these videogame relics into a modern landscape. Unfortunately, rather than fully committing to his elegant premise, Columbus gets bogged down in unconvincing character development. It’s easier to believe a ginormous Pac-Man will chomp New York City than Kevin James will ever be President of the United States! Sandler fans and little kids might enjoy this rollcall of ‘80s game icons, but everyone else should just rent Ghostbusters instead.
Pixels is a love letter to old school gamers. The original nerds who spent way too much time (and money) at the local video arcade when they should have been cutting class and sneaking cigarettes, instead. Like any self-respecting clique, these gamers had their own de facto leaders. In this particular case,...

Putting the mobility and practicality of a GoPro camera to good effect, Sony Pictures has today released a new behind-the-scenes clip for Chris Columbus’ upcoming actioner Pixels, which showcases some of the stuntwork and action scenes as earth is besieged by invading alien lifeforms.
What makes the Adam Sandler-led film so intriguing, though, is that these oncoming extra-terrestrials will take the form of beloved 80s video game characters. From Pac-Man to Donkey Kong, Galaga to Space Invaders, each and every trailer coming out of Sony Pictures’ budding blockbuster has been a blast of nostalgia for those who grew up controlling and/or fighting the pixelated creations.
Mind you, invading aliens isn’t the most preposterous plot point within Pixels, as it stars Paul Blart: Mall Cop‘s Kevin James as the Potus who will likely go down as one of the more bizzare picks for the Oval Office in quite some time.

Sometimes one trailer just isn't enough, just like sometimes one cup of coffee isn't enough. Both of those happen to be the case today, as Sony has released two new trailers for its upcoming film Pixels just as I'm about to bike over to my favorite local coffee shop for a little extra caffeine boost. Pixels seeks to delight the classic gamer slash geek in all of us, Wreck-It Ralph style, as it features a number of iconic video game characters including those from Pac-man, Donkey Kong, Centipede, Galaga, Frogger, Q*bert, and Space Invaders. Sounds pretty cool, rightc I'll admit, the physical world-building in the two trailers does look pretty rad, but these days I'm always skeptical of anything starring Adam Sandler and Kevin James. Pixels also stars Michelle Monaghan, though, whom I'm generally a fan of, and it's got Q*bert. Who knows, maybe it won't be completely...

What’s old is new again in the latest trailer for Chris Columbus’ Pixels, which sees Adam Sandler and his gang of friends witness the earth come under siege from the very video game character they grew up with.
From Donkey Kong to Q*Bert, Pac-Man to Space Invaders, the clip is as bombastic as it is nostalgic, with a hoard of extraterrestrials misinterpreting our intergalactic search for intelligent life. Now, having travelled light years to find us, the aliens declare war on humanity leaving President Will Cooper (Paul Blart: Mall Cop star Kevin James) to call upon his childhood friends in order to prevent mass extinction at the hands of, well, malevolent pixels.
And so, it isn’t long before Cooper is joined by the greatest video game champs of the ’80s, replete with all of the old stereotypes one would expect from the generation. Alongside Adam Sandler’s...

What would you do if aliens decided to attack the world using ‘80s video-game staples turned into very real threats? You’d turn to Adam Sandler, of course! At least, that’s the thinking in the new trailer for Pixels. Spawned from Patrick Jean’s inventive short, Pixels posits what happens when wrong-headed extra-terrestrials interpret examples of video games included in a space probe as a declaration of war. With creations such as Pac-Man, Donkey Kong and Centipede threatening the globe, an unusual countermeasure is suggested. Us President Will Cooper (Kevin James) tracks down old friend and ‘80s video game champ Sam Brenner (Sandler) so he can put together a team of old-school arcade masters including Josh Gad’s Ludlow Lamonsoff and Peter Dinklage’s Billy Mitchell-styled Eddie Plant to defeat the techno-menace. Together, they’ll utilise interesting tweaks on game tropes (such as driving Mini Coopers named for...

Crafting an impressive short with ideas to burn is becoming an ever-more popular means for first-time filmmakers to get their foot in the studio door. Dracula Untold’s Gary Shore got his start that way, and this year’s Pixels was born from Patrick Jean’s video game-referencing work. Now Dutch ads and short film director Mischa Rozema has scored a deal with Warner Bros. on the back of his pitch film, Sundays, which you can watch below. Rozema’s concept, which he wrote with Kevin Koehler, finds Brian Petsos as a man who begins to realise that he himself and the world around him are not what they seem – indeed, the whole universe appears to be slowly falling apart. But can he trust even his own senses? The short definitely has overtones of The Matrix, Inception and even District 9 in its use of grungy visual style and dystopian ideas.

Just this week we shared the trailer for Pixels, an Adam Sandler action, sci-fi comedy about aliens taking the form of ’80s video games and terrorizing the planet. According to Variety, that trailer broke a record by landing 34 million trailer views in its first 24 hours of being online.
But the film actually derives from a 2010 short film by Patrick Jean, and if the new Pixels is half as creative as this short is, I’m sold. Seen here, it’s such an elegant idea with a real love for classic gaming and feels even rightfully ominous. /Film originally shared the video back in 2010 and demanded that Roland Emmerich make this his next movie. They’ll have to settle for Chris Columbus, but anyway, check it out above.

The trailer for Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Pixels, the highly anticipated action-comedy event film slated for release on July 24, 2015, generated 34.3 million views worldwide in its first 24 hours online, making it the studio’s #1 trailer launch of all time. The studio leveraged official channels as well as social pages for Sony, Sony Pictures, Sony Pictures international markets, Sony Electronics, and Sony Rewards, as well as the Xperia Lounge on Sony Mobile and Sony’s Times Square Billboard. Chris Columbus has had his share of misfires, but there may be no filmmaker more underrated for delivering crowd pleasing blockbuster entertainment (and we mean that in the best possible way). This is the man who directed "Home Alone," "Mrs. Doubtfire" and the first two "Harry Potter" movies and produced "The Help" and, for better or worse, all three "Night at the Museum" movies. Is "Pixels" his next slam dunk? Inspired by Patrick Jean's 2010 short film, "Pixels" tells us what happens when aliens believe our attempts at communication are a declaration of war and attack our planet with weapons that just happen to be in the form of some classic video game characters. It's also an Adam Sandler film which you can tell not just because both he and Kevin James are in it, but the fact he has a "story" and top "producer" credit (as opposed to a contractual "executive producer" credit,...
