Note: This story contains spoilers from the “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 20 premiere.
“Grey’s Anatomy” hit the reset button in the aftermath of its traumatic Season 19 finale, including the exit of one of their own. By the end of the Season 20 premiere, Dr. Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman) announced he’d be leaving Grey Sloan Memorial to reunite with Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) at her new home in Boston.
His last move as residency director was passing the torch to the now Catherine Fox award-winning Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), effectively bringing the series back to basics with her taking charge of teaching the hospital’s latest class of interns.
“I feel like if anyone can bring these interns back from what just happened, it’s the person who helped create doctors like Meredith Grey and Cristina Yang and Alex Karev,” showrunner Meg Marinis told TheWrap. “Bailey doesn’t always get the credit that she deserves.

As a self-described mother bear, Marcia Gay Harden says she can easily identify with her tough-but-nurturing character in Gigi & Nate, a poignant movie about a boy and his unlikely service animal who helps everyone move past their family tragedy.
Just weeks before he was heading to college, Nate Gibson (Charlie Rowe) suffers a near-fatal illness and is left with quadriplegia. Moving forward seems impossible – especially because he is in pain and laced with doubt and depression – until he meets Gigi (Allie), a curious and intelligent capuchin money – who helps Nate find what he needs the most: hope.
At face value, Gigi & Nate is about a disabled boy and his monkey overcoming hardship and succeeding together, but it is clearly about so much more!

One of the things that contributes to grief being so difficult to overcome is the learning that comes with it. Clinical psychologist Mary-Frances O'Connor shared with NPR that "grieving is a form of learning - one that teaches us how to be in the world without someone we love in it." It is that heartbreaking and life-altering feeling that drove Mishel Prada to take time off shortly after her mother died last year. After weeks of feeling lost, the actress decided to give herself the time she needed to mourn this major loss and figure out who she is. It brought her healing and helped her channel roles with so much more understanding, delicacy, and depth that you almost immediately notice a change. Prada isn't the same woman she was before. A League of Their Own is a pretty darn perfect movie. The Penny Marshall-directed film from 1992, about the women recruited to play professional baseball while so many men were off fighting World War II, is a crackerjack sports movie, a winning ensemble comedy, and a well-hit drama about female empowerment in an era when the concept seemed utterly foreign. It’s got all-star performances by Geena Davis, Tom Hanks (it’s the role that kicked off his Hall of Fame run in the Nineties), Madonna (never better as an actor), and more.

This is the fourth of a series of interviews that focus on Local 829's Scenic Artists’ "behind the scenes" talent who sculpt and paint in a variety of ways the sets we see on television, in movies and documentaries, on theater stages, and in the backgrounds of television and internet commercials.
I first met Bradley Rubenstein very early on in my days in the scenic arts, and it was immediately apparent that he was, and still is, respectfully dedicated to his work as a fine artist. I’ve followed his career closely since then, watching his art delving deeper and deeper into the human condition as he distorts and mutates his subjects. Recently, Rubenstein had one of his warped and mangled human forms in an exhibition titled Head that I curated for the Hampden Gallery at Umass Amherst.

Fox Searchlight has released the cute poster for their upcoming film, Me And Earl And The Dying Girl.
Winner of the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, Me And Earl And The Dying Girl is the uniquely funny, moving story of Greg (Thomas Mann), a high school senior who is trying to blend in anonymously, avoiding deeper relationships as a survival strategy for navigating the social minefield that is teenage life.
He even describes his constant companion Earl (Rj Cyler), with whom he makes short film parodies of classic movies, as more of a ‘co-worker’ than a best friend. But when Greg’s mom (Connie Britton) insists he spend time with Rachel (Olivia Cooke) – a girl in his class who has just been diagnosed with cancer – he slowly discovers how...

Predicting the Academy Awards is always a tricky game, and each year has its own special flavor that makes some categories easy, and others particularly difficult. While some categories are locks, as would seem to be the case with Cate Blanchett in the Best Actress category this year (having won so many other awards for the role), for others, you really have to have your finger on the pulse of the collective film world consciousness if you want to do more than just take a stab in the dark.
But, where exactly do you look, and which predictors really mean something?
Just for fun, let’s see if we can figure where to look, and how to get your best guess. We’ll take a look at three categories, just to get a sampling of how to check out what the “pulse” looks like. Let’s take Film, Director, and Actor.

Despite the buzz, I didn’t think Dallas Buyers Club was very likely to wow me, and even though it didn’t exactly, it’s still a pretty awesome movie in its own way. I would have liked a little more this, and a little less that, but it pulls you along pretty well, and McConaughey is fantastic.
We ended up liking it pretty well, especially for the acting, but I’d say that perhaps we appreciated it more than we could truly manage to like it. It gets high marks, and it is very solid in a lot of ways, but it just doesn’t have that certain something… and, Jennifer Garner is the wrong choice.
The World’s End, on the other hand, we both hated.

Starring Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner and Jared Leto, here’s a first look at director Jean-Marc Vallée’s Dallas Buyers Club.
In the fact-based drama, Spirit Award winner Matthew McConaughey portrays real-life Texas electrician Ron Woodroof, an ordinary man who found himself in a life-or-death battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies. In 1985, Ron was blindsided by being diagnosed as HIV-positive and given 30 days to live.
With the U.S. still internally divided over how to combat the virus and restricting medications, Ron grabbed hold of non-toxic alternative treatments from all over the world by means both legal and illegal.
(l to r) Jared Leto as Rayon and Matthew McConaughey as Ron Woodroof.
Seeking to avoid government sanctions against selling non-approved medicines and supplements, he established a “buyers club,” which fellow HIV-positive people could join for access to his supplies.

Lee Daniels’ The Butler is set against the tumultuous political backdrop of 20th century America. Academy Award® nominated director Lee Daniels’ (Precious) epic drama tells the story of fictional White House butler Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker), who serves during seven presidential administrations between 1957 and 1986. The film is inspired by Wil Haygood’s 2008 Washington Post article “A Butler Well Served by This Election” which chronicled the real life of former White House butler Eugene Allen. The film begins in 1926 and follows a young Cecil as he escapes the tyranny of the fiercely segregated South in search of a better life.
Along his arduous journey to manhood Cecil learns invaluable skills that ultimately lead to an opportunity of a lifetime: a job as a butler at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. There, Cecil becomes a firsthand witness to history and the inner workings of the Oval Office as the civil rights movement unfolds. At home,...

For Oscar I mean? Oscar winner Forest Whitaker was recently snapped on the set of 2013 Oscar hopeful The Butler, from Precious director Lee Daniels. Given the The Weinstein Co will distribute the film and the subject is a long time White House butler and his relationship to the first families, one expects so.
Forest Whitaker shot on set by Anne Marie Fox
The Paperboy, which is nearly upon us, doesn't look like anyone's idea of a typical Oscar magnet, but neither did Lee Daniels' first film Shadowboxer (yes, that one. The one with Hitwoman Helen Mirren romancing Cuba Gooding Jr.). Perhaps Lee Daniels will be an every other film type Oscar player?
Have you given much thought to the starry cast of The Butler ... or any 2013 film's Oscar chances? It's always a struggle to stay in the now when it's so fun to fantasize about what's ahead of us.

Best Supporting Actress Mo’Nique, Precious Mo’Nique in Precious (Anne Marie Fox / Lionsgate) Can it be anyone else? The other best supporting actress Golden Globe nominees are Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air), Penelope Cruz (Nine), and Julianne Moore (A Single Man). They’re all fine actresses and their performances have for the most part heaped quite a bit of praise. If the Hollywood Foreign Press members were more adventurous, perhaps someone like Anna Kendrick might have a chance, but that seems highly unlikely. Mo’Nique has momentum thanks to loads of critical awards, while her abusive mom in Precious is the sort of show-stopping role that turns mere actors into stars. I mean, at a talk-show interview Mo’Nique recently said that Oprah [...]...

Stephen Lang, Sam Worthington in Avatar (Mark Fellman / 20th Century Fox) (top); Gabourey Sidibe, Paula Patton in Precious (Anne Marie Fox / Lionsgate) (middle); George Clooney in Up in the Air (Dale Robinette / Paramount) (bottom) James Cameron’s Avatar, J.J. Abrams‘ Star Trek, and Neill Blomkamp’s sleeper hit District 9 are three science-fiction films included in the Producers Guild of America’s list of nominees for best narrative feature of 2009. Two other major box-office hits were included in the list as well, Pete Docter’s animated Up and Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, in addition to a couple of smaller but successful productions, Lee Daniels‘ Precious and Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air. Also included were critics’ favorite The Hurt Locker, [...]...

Mo’Nique in Precious (Anne Marie Fox / Lionsgate) Like Christoph Waltz in the best supporting actor category, Mo’Nique — who plays a nasty mother in Lee Daniels‘ Precious — is by far the North American critics’ top choice for best supporting actress of 2009: 17 wins and counting, in addition to awards at both the Sundance and Stockholm film festivals. Mo’Nique has also nabbed SAG, Critics Choice, Golden Globe, and Spirit award nominations. Anna Kendrick, as George Clooney’s assistant of sorts in Up in the Air, has come out on top in Toronto, Houston, and Austin, in addition to a National Board of Review win, while two-time Oscar nominee Samantha Morton, playing a war widow in The Messenger, won in San [...]...

Gabourey Sidibe in Precious (Anne Marie Fox / Lionsgate) (top); Alfre Woodard, Nicole Beharie in American Violet (Scott Saltzman / Samuel Goldwyn Films) (bottom) According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Roger Friedman, Precious‘ Gabourey Sidibe may have been cheated out of a best actress award. This past Dec. 14, the African-American Film Critics Association gave Precious awards for Best Picture, Best Director (Lee Daniels), Best Supporting Actress (Mo’Nique) and Best Screenplay (Geoffrey Fletcher). The Best Actress, however, was Nicole Beharie for American Violet, a little-seen socially conscious drama directed by Tim Disney (great-nephew of Walt Disney) and written by Bill Haney, who also produced it. Some within the Aafca now assert that Sidibe was the actual winner. "According to the final [...]...

Chicago – The final scene of Lee Daniels’ “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” ends with a dedication that the film is for “precious girls everywhere”.
The words seem likely to resonate with the legions of fans of this tragic true story (based on the girls that the author met while teaching in NYC) - women and men who can identify with rising above abuse, poverty, addiction, or whatever seemingly insurmountable odds speak most personally to them.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Daniels has made a bleak, brutal, depressing urban drama that will surely be the “feel-bad, feel-good” movie of the year, a well-made film that is so dark that it can be hard to watch but that is designed to illustrate the fact that the human power to overcome adversity is stronger than the instinct to shrivel and die.
