Anne Hathaway and Thomasin McKenzie are spiraling into something dark in the first trailer for Neon’s Eileen.
Directed by William Oldroyd, written by Ottessa Moshfegh and Luke Goebel, and also starring Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland and Owen Teague, Eileen follows McKenzie’s titular young secretary, employed at a prison during a bitter Massachusetts winter in 1964.
The more than two-minute trailer teases a doozy of a day — “one of those days you’ll never forget” — for Eileen after the arrival of Hathaway’s Rebecca, the new prison psychologist. “She may be easy on the eyes,” one man says as he introduces her to prison staff. “But I assure you, she is very smart.”
The blonde-haired, pink-lipped smoker leaves Eileen feeling off-kilter, as someone who “lives a little differently than most people.” She sees something in Eileen, who is hardly normal and far from “average,” according to the psychologist.

Signature Entertainment has snapped up U.K. and Ireland rights to Julia Louis-Dreyfus comedy “You Hurt My Feelings” from FilmNation Entertainment.
Directed by Nicole Holofcener, the film stars Louis-Dreyfus and Tobias Menzies (“The Crown”) as a couple whose marriage is thrown into turmoil when she overhears his honest reaction to her latest book. The cast also includes Owen Teague, David Cross, Arian Moayed and Michaela Watkins.
It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and will close Sundance London.
Reviewing the film for Variety, critic Owen Gleiberman said: “The key to ‘You Hurt My Feelings’ is that the entire movie turns into a satire of what has become our fetishistically supportive and oversensitive therapeutic culture of positivity. All these things, in a way, are necessary. But maybe, the film suggests, we have tried to heal ourselves a little too much. Maybe we need a little more naked honesty mixed in with the wellness.

It’s been a couple of months, but the Sundance sales are still slowly chugging along, and today it’s for one of IndieWire’s favorites out of the festival. Neon has landed the North American rights to “Eileen,” the drama starring Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway.
William Oldroyd (“Lady Macbeth”) directed “Eileen,” based on Ottessa Moshfegh’s 2015 novel of the same name. The project was considered one of the hotter and more acclaimed titles out of Sundance, and Neon says the distributor beat out several other buyers out of the festival. But based on a prior source who told IndieWire that the film came at a budget of $16 million, that could have explained why it took some time for this one to close. No acquisition price for the film was disclosed.
“Eileen” also stars Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland, and Owen Teague, but the highlights are McKenzie and Hathaway, whom...

Neon has purchased North American rights to “Eileen,” an adaptation of Ottessa Moshfegh’s acclaimed novel of the same title.
The movie debuted to strong reviews at Sundance, but its high price tag, said by sources to be in the range of $15 million, made it difficult for the film to score a distribution deal. It languished on the market for roughly two months as several studios kicked the tires. This despite the combined star wattage of “Jojo Rabbit’s” Thomasin McKenzie and Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway and a twisty plot. The rest of the ensemble includes Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland, and Owen Teague. William Oldroyd (“Lady Macbeth”) directs from a script by Moshfegh who adapted “Eileen” with Luke Goebel. Neon will release the film theatrically this fall.
The deal was negotiated by Jeff Deutchman for Neon, WME Independent and Fifth Season. Financial details of the sale were not revealed.

Each Sunday morning, the New York Times publishes the Metropolitan Diary, short tales about city life submitted by readers that capture the wonder and serendipity of life in NYC. Not surprisingly, filmmaker Charlie Kaufman loves those “little stories.” “I love the Metropolitan Diary. It’s my favorite thing on Sunday to read,” he told IndieWire during a recent interview.
Kaufman’s latest film, a short entitled “Jackals & Fireflies,” conjures up the same feeling of the Metropolitan Diary. Shot entirely on a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra by cinematographer Chayse Irvin (part of the company’s #withGalaxy campaign), the film reunites Kaufman with poet Eva H.D., whose poem “bonedog” was used in his “I’m Thinking of Ending Things.”
H.D. adapted the script from her own poem and also stars in it as the unnamed narrator. Per the film’s official synopsis, the short follows “a woman [who] wanders the streets of New York City,...

It is always a time for celebration when we get a new Nicole Holofcener film, and that is especially true of her latest one that stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus. You Hurt My Feelings, which had its premiere Sunday night at Sundance, is the pair’s second collaboration, with 2013’s Enough Said co-starring the late James Gandolfini being the first. That film, and other Holofcener writing-directing efforts such as Friends with Money, Lovely & Amazing and perhaps my favorite, Please Give (not to forget the wonderful Can You Ever Forgive Me? which she co-wrote), focused on the quirky nature of our relationships with others in our lives. Holofcener just has always had a knack for getting right to the heart of things, often with a witty, wise and truthful touch.
This film is one of her best — with themes of trust, honesty, truth and lies at its center. Louis-Dreyfus plays happily married Beth,...

Few producers have the staying power of Anthony Bregman. From his early 1990s start as an assistant at Good Machine, he rode the wave of an independent film boom, producing “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “Foxcatcher,” “Enough Said” and other acclaimed features. Charlie Kaufman, the writer of “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “Being John Malkovich,” is back with his first movie in five years — an adaptation of Iain Reid’s bestselling, cult horror novel “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” on Netflix that teased its first trailer Thursday.
And this latest trip into Kaufman’s mind, which finds Jessie Buckley on a road trip to meet her boyfriend’s parents, is as strange, offbeat funny and disturbing as you’ve come to expect from one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed mind-benders.
“I’m Thinking of Ending Things” stars Buckley as a young woman with second thoughts about taking a road trip with her new boyfriend (Jesse Plemons) to his family farm. But when she finds herself trapped at the farm during a snowstorm with Jake’s mother (Toni Collette) and father (David Thewlis), she begins to question the nature of everything she...

Ruben Östlund’s black comedy about an unexpected implosion of trust set against the slopes of the Alps, “Force Majeure,” represented Sweden at the Academy Awards in 2015 and was a minor foreign-language box-office hit in the U.S. So it makes sense that an American studio, in this case Fox Searchlight Pictures, would want to recreate Östlund’s wincingly funny film about a couple in crisis for stateside audiences. Enter “Downhill,” which finally has its first trailer below.
Here, co-directors/writers Nat Faxon and Jim Rash (co-writing with “Succession” scribe Jesse Armstrong) cast Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus in the roles of a husband and wife who, while on vacation in the Alps with their two children, encounter a brush with death. Jesse Plemons is in talks to co-star with Brie Larson in Charlie Kaufman’s “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” for Netflix, sources tell Variety.
Plemons will play Jake, a man going on a road trip to meet his parents on their secluded farm with his girlfriend (Larson), who is thinking of terminating their relationship. When Jake makes an unexpected detour leaving her stranded, a twisted mix of palpable tension, psychological frailty, and sheer terror ensues.
Kaufman is directing and adapting the script based on Ian Reid’s 2016 novel. He is also producing with Likely Story’s Anthony Bregman and Stefanie Azpiazu. Reid will serve as co-producer.
Plemons credits include Scott Cooper’s western “Hostiles,” “Game Night” with Rachel McAdams, Steven Spielberg’s “The Post,” and “American Made” alongside Tom Cruise.
He recently wrapped production on Fox Searchlight’s “Antlers” opposite Keri Russell and also shot “Jungle Cruise” with Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.

Exclusive: Likely Story’s Anthony Bregman and Stefanie Azpiazu have acquired film rights to The World As It Is: A Memoir of the Obama White House, the bestselling memoir by Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes, a first-hand account of the eight years of the Obama presidency as observed by one of his closest aides.
Several bidders were in the mix for an auction conducted by Anonymous Content’s Howie Sanders and Elyse Cheney of The Cheney Agency. Likely Story plans to mount a film to shoot next year for 2020 release. Compared with the daily contentiousness of the Donald Trump presidency, this account will likely make Obama supporters feel nostalgic and wistful for what seems like a different era. Two indie films were made about the formative years of the 44th president in Barry and Southside With You. This could be the first feature about his two terms in the White House.

HBO has given a pilot order to comedy Mrs. Fletcher, based on The Leftovers author Tom Perrotta’s bestselling novel of the same name, with Kathryn Hahn attached to star, and Nicole Holofcener set to direct and executive produce. Perrotta, who co-created with Damon Lindelof the HBO series The Leftovers inspired by his book, wrote the Mrs. Fletcher adaptation and executive produces.
Mrs. Fletcher, which had been in the works at HBO for a while, is about an empty-nest mom (played by Hahn) and her college-student son who embrace their newfound freedom with mixed results.
Hahn’s Eve Fletcher is a divorced woman who drops her only child off at college and returns home to a very empty nest. Hoping to jump-start her love life, she adopts a sexy new persona and discovers that her world is full of unexpected—and sometimes complicated—erotic possibilities.
The comedy is a dual coming-of-age story,...
