When Paul King's 2014 film "Paddington" came out, audiences had reason to be skeptical. The beloved title character, a talking Peruvian bear left alone at London's Paddington station, wasn't necessarily a good fit for a live-action take. Movies like 2002's "Scooby Doo" and 2007's "Alvin and the Chipmunks" were proof that audiences would show up for CGI versions of classic characters, but the movies could also be ugly and loud, the most cynical kind of children's movie. Nobody wanted that fate for Paddington Bear.
But the character flourished in the new medium. King's film received a great deal of critical praise, getting a 97% positive approval rate on RottenTomatoes. The movie was sparkling, playful, and gleefully imaginative, and rather than stop the movie dead, Paddington's (voiced by Ben Wheatley) wild antics set the stage for physical comedy in the vein of Charlie Chaplin. 2017's "Paddington 2" was even better, finding...

I dreamed a dream of bears gone by – everyone’s favourite fuzzball is heading to a UK stage in 2025. More below…
Paul King’s Wonka seems to have got Studiocanal in the mood for another musical. In the week that the toe-tappingly cheerful chocolatier tale shot to the top of the UK box office, the studio, along with Sonia Friedman Productions and Eliza Lumley Productions, have announced work has started on bringing their most successful (and most ursine) property to the stage in an original musical.
McFly’s Tom Fletcher is on music and lyrics duty, with Jessica Swale (who won an Olivier-award in 2016 for her comedy Nell Gwynn) writing the script. Luke Sheppard, who recently directed inspiring musical-drama The Little Big Things on the West End, is attached to direct the show tentatively titled Paddington: The Musical.

Hollywood star Hugh Grant has revealed how he was asked to star in the film ‘Wonka’ and play the iconic character of Oompa Loompa. Another spooky season has come and very nearly gone. The leaves are changing colors, the days are getting shorter (and colder), and it's time to start gearing up for the annual end-of-year rush of awards players. Not that that's any reason to stop the scary times from going. If you're like me, you'll probably spend the first part of November just catching up on all the spine-chilling entertainment you had intended to get to in October (there's just too darn much to cram into a single month -- I only barely got started on the new "Goosebumps" series). Of course, if you'd prefer to get a head-start on the winter holidays, you could instead tune in to Max, which will be adding plenty of beloved festive titles over the next few weeks, and much more.
Here are our top picks for November, along with everything else that's coming to the streamer that month.

Who doesn't love Paddington, the cuddly bear who emigrated from darkest Peru all the way to the bustling streets of London in search of a new home and an adoring family to take him in? Based on the immensely popular children's books by the late author Michael Bond, with the main character voiced to perfection by actor Ben Whishaw, "Paddington" becoming a live-action franchise was just about the biggest no-brainer of a decision any studio ever had to make. It paid off big time when the 2014 movie released to overwhelmingly positive reviews and led to a sequel three years later that inspired even more rapturous reactions -- one that inspired many a seasoned movie-watching veteran to throw around the M-word (masterpiece!) with complete and utter sincerity. Everyone, even the most stubborn and cold-hearted grump, comes around on Paddington eventually!

Kate Garraway has discovered that she is a relative of Paddington Bear creator Michael Bond.
As part of the new series of ITV’s DNA Journey, the Good Morning Britain presenter was introduced to Karen Jankel, the daughter of the late author.
The pair have the same three-times great-grandparent and shared an emotional embrace after meeting at Paddington station.
Bond’s enduring children’s book character famously arrived in London from the deepest, darkest jungles of Peru and first appeared in print in 1958 in the book A Bear Called Paddington.
Jankel told Garraway she wanted to introduce her to her “famous brother” before revealing a stuffed toy of Paddington Bear, complete with a travel tag reading “Darkest Peru”.
“Paddington and I grew up together,” she explained. “The reason is that my father was Michael Bond, the creator of Paddington, which means that of course you are also related to Michael Bond.

Wilson joins the franchise following the exit of director Paul King, who mounted both past installments to huge success, and is now focused on the Timothée Chalamet starrer, Wonka.
The franchise from StudioCanal and Heyday Films is based on the classic character Paddington Bear, featuring in more than 20 books by British author Michael Bond. The original 2014 film Paddington watched as the young Peruvian bear traveled to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, he met the kindly Brown family, who offered him a temporary haven. The sequel released in 2017 found Paddington happily settled with the Brown family and a popular member of the local community, following him as he picked up a series of odd jobs to buy the perfect present for...

Ambulance (Michael Bay)
The Marvel machine may be the most fortuitous development for Michael Bay. Though the director hasn’t dabbled in the world of superheroes—despite a fondness for a cinematic universe of the robot variety—the homogenized, green-screen wasteland of today’s box-office behemoths has indirectly led to a reappreciation of the director’s schoolboy giddiness for practical effects and continually upping the ante for where he can place a camera. As bombastic and occasionally mind-numbing as his approach may be, there’s distinct poetry to the momentum of a maximalist vision where previs filmmaking vis-a-vis a committee is not only missing from his vocabulary, but a kinetic approach makes such a proposition nigh impossible. With Ambulance, a streamlined spectacle that borrows liberally from Heat,...

Italian broadcaster Rai has made two high-profile acquisitions from European production, distribution and sales powerhouse Studiocanal: Three seasons of “Esther’s Notebooks” and Seasons 1 and 2 of “The Adventures of Paddington.”
“The Adventures of Paddington” is the latest iteration of the global IP phenomenon whose first season was a critical and ratings hit in territories around the world, scoring two Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Preschool Animated Series and Outstanding Writing Team for a Preschool Animated Program. Maintaining the spirit of the Studiocanal box office smash hit films, the animated series delivers new narratives in 11-minute episodes focusing on themes such as family, curiosity and treating others with respect.
John Foster and James Lamont handle screenwriting duties on the series, which is produced by David Heyman’s celebrated production house Heyday Films, Studiocanal, Copyrights Group and with participation of M6. The series currently airs on Nickelodeon in several territories internationally...

The 2017 sequel “Paddington 2” is one of the most adored films of the 21st century, with fans among adults and kids alike. Director Paul King’s beloved story of the joy-spreading bear was also considered to be the top-rated film of all time on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with a whopping 100-percent score. Well, now that’s changed, as one rotten review scrounged up from 2017 and now added to the film’s page has dropped the score to 99 percent.
The review comes from Film Authority writer Eddie Harrison, who found the movie to be “contrived and ridiculous,” adding, “I reviewed ‘Paddington 2’ negatively for BBC radio on release in 2017, and on multiple occasions after that, and I stand by every word of my criticism. This is not my Paddington Bear, but a sinister, malevolent imposter who should be shot into space, or nuked from space at the first opportunity.

“Paddington 3” — a new entry in the beloved movie series — is in active development, representatives from Studiocanal told Variety: “We can confirm Studiocanal is working very hard on film 3 with the utmost craft and care — as with film 1 and 2.”
Last week, in an interview on BBC Radio 2’s “The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show,” “Paddington” star Hugh Bonneville said there was “forward momentum” on the project, and that it was “somewhere on the horizon.”
There are no details to share yet about the new movie, the reps said, but in previous reports, Studiocanal said it will again be teaming up with David Heyman’s Heyday Films. In the past, “Paddington” writer-director Paul King said he will not direct the third film, but will still be involved. King is currently directing Warner Bros.’ “Wonka,” a Willy Wonka origins story, set to be released in March 2023.

Pack the freshest Marmalade sandwich you can find! Paddington bear is headed to television by way of StudioCanal and Nickelodeon. And best of all? Ben Whishaw is back in the voice booth.
Per Deadline, it’s understood this CG-animated series will follow the adventures of a younger Paddington bear in Peru – long before he was shipped off to the Big Smoke. Having been involved in StudioCanal’s feature films, Harry Potter producer David Heyman is also attached to the pre-schooler TV show, which is now beginning to make serious headway in production.
Adapted from Michael Bond’s Paddington Bear stories – ditto for those live-action movies – this animated series is in development from director Adam Shaw (Go Jetters), with Jon Foster and James Lamont on script duties.

Studiocanal is joining forces with Nickelodeon and award-winning producer David Heyman to create a CGI-animated series adapted from its “Paddington” franchise, with actor Ben Whishaw on board to reprise his role as the voice of the beloved bear.
The toon series will be based on Michael Bond’s Paddington Bear stories, as were the two feature films: “Paddington” (2014) and “Paddington 2” (2017) which were global box-office hits. The first “Paddington” movie took $268 million worldwide and gave Studiocanal its biggest theatrical gross ever. It also marked the highest-grossing non-u.S. family film ever. “Paddington 2,” released in December 2017, grossed more than $227.3 million worldwide.
The series will be aimed at pre-schoolers, and will air on Nickelodeon’s networks worldwide next year. Local broadcast partners will be brought on board in France, Canada, China and Japan.

It was a year of triumphant returns—for Barry Jenkins, Alfonso Cuarón, Paul Schrader, Joel and Ethan Coen, Steve McQueen, Pawel Pawlikowski, Spike Lee, Marielle Heller, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Orson Welles (!), and, of course, Paddington. And, it was a time in which new(ish) voices asserted their authority. Consider the likes of Boots Riley, Chloé Zhao, Paul Dano (and co-screenwriter Zoe Kazan), Ari Aster, and, yes, Bradley Cooper. Any cinemagoer who calls 2018 a disappointment simply was not looking hard enough.
Interestingly, my own top ten list features four foreign language films and two “kids” films. These categorizations are flawed, of course. Language makes no difference here, and anyone who considers Paddington 2 and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to be kid-only movies is certainly close-minded. So let’s dispense with the categories and merely say that listed here are 10 gems (and five honorable mentions) that struck me as bold, original, breathtaking films...

Dear critics, the HFPA, Screen Actors Guild voters and especially academy members: Please consider “Paddington 2” this awards’ season.
The family comedy set a record at Rotten Tomatoes with 100% positive reviews (all 214 of them). Even Alfonso Cuaron’s lauded “Roma” didn’t manage 100% fresh, receiving one negative review. It has even received the Guillermo del Toro (and he knows a lot about creatures) stamp of approval on Twitter: “One of the best films of the year (no kidding) and one of the best sequels ever.”
“Paddington 2” was nominated for three BAFTA Awards including Best British Film and supporting actor for Hugh Grant. It made $227 million worldwide; $40 million in the U.S. Let’s face it “Paddington 2” is the “Citizen Kane” of adorable bear movies. It has heart, soul, humor and pathos. So, attention must be paid.

Scruggs is, of course, the latest work from brothers Joel and Ethan Coen, and represents a ravishing if wildly uneven addition to their catalogue. It also marks their first foray into the odd waters of the portmanteau subgenre, which is perhaps a little surprising when considering the duo’s dexterity with so many cinematic modes, not to mention their signature ability to switch between such a wide range of serious and farcical tones. – Rory O. Paddington 3 is in the works, but director Paul King might not return.
The first Paddington movie made $268 million, and the second (which is one of our favorite movies of the year) took $226 million – making it one of the most successful family franchises around. Both films also happened to be absolutely brilliant, adapting Michael Bond’s children’s books with real warmth and wit.
The good news is that Paddington 3 is happening. The bad news is that Paul King probably won’t be returning to direct it.
“I don’t think Paul King will direct the third,” producer David Heyman told Collider. “He did the first two – he and I are working on another project together… He’s very special, Paul. Though we’re still months away from the end of the school year, the studios still hope to entice the lil’ ones into the multiplex on the weekends with big screen adventures based on their beloved characters. Disney, for the last eighty years or so, has had a pretty strong lock on the classic storybook characters, many from the (often twisted) works of the Brothers Grimm, the ole’ “once upon a time” reliables. This has left the other studios to go after other inspirations, grabbing up the rights to lots of fairly recent “kids lit” best sellers. In the last decade we’ve had a franchise with flicks based on the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ series (mainly live action). Just last Summer the first of a hopefully long series of “Captain Underpants” CGI movies was released. Going back a bit further, Universal has grabbed a big chunk of the...

In theory, the first Paddington film, inspired by the Michael Bond books about a loveable bear who sports a red hat blue coat and has a penchant for marmalade, was a dangerous idea. Live-action modern tellings of classic children’s literature always runs the risk of flying off the rails – look no further than the 2003 disaster, The Cat in the Hat.
Cat in the Hat, Paddington fortunately was not. If anything, Paul King’s 2015 film provided a delightful, and importantly, timely tale about finding a place to call home. Appreciative audiences were struck with its whimsical but mature comparisons to immigration and acceptance of the Other. We’re just a few weeks into 2018, but a very early candidate for Most Charming Film has arrived. Paddington 2 is a genuine delight, a sequel that improves upon its (very good) predecessor. It is also the rare family film that has appeal for everyone in the family. As with 2014’s Paddington, director Paul King has zeroed in on the inherent magic of Michael Bond’s classic stories while incorporating scores of Wes Anderson-esque sight gags. Plus, there is a game cast of British heavyweights — Sally Hawkins, Hugh Bonneville, Jim Broadbent, and, this time around, a superb Hugh Grant — and gorgeous London locations. Most of all, there is the titular bear himself, a wondrous CGI creation sweetly voiced by Ben Whishaw. It is not hyperbolic to call Paddington one of the most adorably life-like computer-animated characters in cinema. He is the anti-Alvin, Simon, and Theodore, an anthropomorphic triumph whose interactions with humans are always believable.

Michael Bond’s Paddington Bear stories are charmingly small in scale, so it was quite a gamble when David Heyman, the producer of the “Harry Potter” series, decided that they should be the basis of an action-packed, megabudget franchise. It turned out, though, that he knew what he was doing: “Paddington” was a beloved hit in 2015, and the superior sequel is bound to be even more lucrative. Once again directed by Paul King, and co-written by King and Simon Farnaby, “Paddington 2” is a sure-footed, sweet-natured family comedy which isn’t set at Christmas, but which glows with so much warmth.

Less than a week into the new year, and it’s already here: the best film of 2018. Surely there will be others, but for now, Paul King’s charming followup to his charming 2014 original feature, based on the beloved children’s stories penned by author Michael Bond, is as good as it gets among new releases. The rare sequel that improves upon the original, and in turn makes the still rarer case for a franchise to continue on as long as it possibly can, “Paddington 2” is about as clever and sweet a crowdpleasing as any movie — not just one primarily aimed at the younger set and their families.

Isn’t it amazing how expectations can change so quickly and colossally? Back when Paddington was scheduled to hit cinemas in 2014, it was the subject of much concern for a great number of audiences. A CG/Live-Action adaptation of the beloved books by the late great Michael Bond, the film frighteningly had people expecting another Garfield: The Movie, Yogi Bear or The Smurfs. Pre-release the film was blitzed by cynicism and negativity, from rumours surrounding Colin Firth leaving the project, to the first photo of Paddington being deemed creepy and curiously inspiring an online trend of editing poor old Paddington into classic horror movies. Such a tidal wave of pessimism though was met with a wave breaker of charm, as Paddington shocked audiences by being not only good but a magical, masterful, family film with lots to say about acceptance, goodwill and finding a place you can call a home.

Following its overwhelmingly successful UK opening earlier this month and currently #1 at the UK box office, “Paddington 2”—fully financed by Studiocanal and produced by multi award-winning producer David Heyman (the “Harry Potter” and “Fantastic Beasts” films, “Paddington,” “Gravity”)—is set to debut in theatres across North America on January 12, 2018.
The Studio has acquired distribution rights for the film in the U.S. and Canada from Studiocanal and TWC/Dimension Films, it was jointly announced today by Studiocanal, Sue Kroll, President of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Toby Emmerich, President and Chief Content Officer, Warner Bros. Pictures Group.

I did hear the other day that I shouldn’t trust what actors say, as they’re professional liars.
Absolutely. Some of the most devious people – what was it? Devious and dangerous people on the planet – absolutely. Spoken by Dame Julie Walters.
I’m curious how the experience differed for you from the last Paddington...
It was different in so far as, the family’s story is separate to Paddington’s really, and I thought that was interesting, and I wasn’t sure how it would fit together. And so in...

Harry Potter and Paddington 2 producer chats to us about the films, about cinema, and about Ravenous...

When you were in the midst of the first Paddington, did you imagine you’d be so successful that you’d not only be making a sequel, but also the second most successful non-us family film of all time?
I think it’s the most successful non-studio family film of all time.
I apologise. Clearly my sources are a little off.

Simon Farnaby chats to us about writing Paddington 2, appearing in Rogue One, and making Yonderland...
Simon Farnaby is a man already keenly admired around these parts for being part of the Horrible Histories, Yonderland and Bill ensemble. But he's also the man who co-penned the script to the incoming Paddington 2, which seemed like a good enough excuse for a chat to us. Here's how it went...

How did you end up joining Paul King [director/co-writer] on writing duties this time round?
Paul and I are friends, and we met many, many years ago in the comedy fringes, shall we say. We met and got on, and we did a one man show; we co-wrote a show, which I was acting in, and Paul directed for Battersea arts centre, this was 2004, or something.
