Starting with a modest proposal framing Black power as the erasure of systemic white supremacy, Sam Pollard and Llewellyn M. Smith’s South to Black Power, written by and featuring New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow, proposes a roadmap forward: a reverse great migration back to southern states with Black populations. Citing Vermont as a successful case study, Blow tells the story of how the counterculture changed the rural, conservative state by simply doing the math and moving in. Born and raised in the racially mixed rural town of Gibsland, Louisiana, Blow returns home to find some signs of encouraging process, discussing with relatives their plans for redeveloping their town by obtaining power through official channels.
Herein lies the problem studied extensively in the documentary: while achieving strength and agency at a municipal level is possible, Blow uses his new hometown of Atlanta as a successful case study. But...

“I created this villain s–t,” Jonny Fairplay boasted during the “House of Villains” press day ahead of the show’s Oct. 12 premiere. “Good guys are boring!”
The “Survivor” alum, who famously lied about his grandmother dying to gain sympathy from his tribemates while competing on the CBS reality competition in 2003, should know. He’s parlayed those 15 minutes of villainy into a 20-year career.
So has Omarosa, who also made her TV debut 20 years ago in inaugural season of “The Apprentice” with Donald Trump. Even before the days of social media, Omarosa knew the value of personal branding.

Basseterre, (St Kitts), Aug 28 (Ians) Veteran off-spinner Sunil Narine became the first cricketer to be shown a red card for over-rate breach in a Caribbean Premier League (Cpl) match for his team Trinbago Knight Riders (Tkr) against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots.
The ongoing Cpl 2023 saw the organisers introduce new penalties to tackle slow over rates, leading to games ending very late. It said, “if a fielding team starts their 18th over beyond the scheduled time, they would need to bring one extra fielder inside the thirty-yard circle.”
“If they were behind before the start of the 19th over as well, another fielder had to come in, making it just three outside the circle. If the fielding team is still behind before the start of the final over, they would be shown a red card, and be required to send a fielder of their choice off the field.”

Chicago – Sam Pollard has established himself as a top director of documentaries, to add to his stellar career as a film editor … including for Spike Lee. His latest doc is a deep dive into the 20th Century curiosity of the Negro League. With interviews, archival photos/footage and comprehensive storytelling, the doc is entitled “The League.”
The Negro Leagues were born because of Major League Baseball’s segregation in the first half of the 20th Century, as the owners colluded to keep blacks off their teams. It took black entrepreneur Rube Foster to organize the rag-tag “negro” teams of the era into a collective in 1920. At the League’s peak they forged their own top players, introduced a more modern speed-oriented game and produced many future stars … including Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron and Willie Mays. Barely surviving the Depression, the barnstorming league changed teams and areas of the country with impunity,...

As the SAG-AFTRA strike gets underway, documentary filmmakers are still at work. But despite the fact that the dual strike by actors and their writer counterparts in the WGA could lead to gaps in narrative content for broadcast networks and streaming companies, the doc industry isn’t holding out much hope that studios will start flooding money into documentaries.
“There’s a feeling of solidarity and support for SAG and for the WGA,” says Bryn Mooser, founder of nonfiction film and television studio Xtr. “The struggle they are facing is a struggle that doc filmmakers have also faced since the beginning of the industry on the documentary side, which is fair pay and making sure we are represented in the right way, et cetera. But if anybody thought that this would mean that (studios) will just shift resources to a different part of the industry like docs while this gets figured out,...

There’s no shortage of great movies about baseball, but there is a severe lack of films about the Negro leagues. The fifth inning of Ken Burns’ expansive “Baseball” covers them with admirable reverence, but feature-length projects — whether narrative or documentary — are vanishingly rare. “The League” is therefore something close to required viewing for devotees of our national pastime just by virtue of its existence, so it comes as a relief that Sam Pollard’s documentary (exec produced by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson) is also quite good on the merits.
Given his résumé, that shouldn’t come as a surprise. Pollard’s prior work as director includes “MLK/FBI” and “Citizen Ashe,” and he’s also edited several Spike Lee joints; in addition to a Peabody Award and career achievement prize from the International Documentary Association, he shared an Oscar nomination with Lee for 1997’s “4 Little Girls” about the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing.

If you didn’t grow up in Pittsburgh (which boasted rival baseball greats the Homestead Grays and the Pittsburgh Crawfords) or watch Episode 5 of the 1994 Ken Burns docu-series “Baseball,” you may not know much about the Negro Leagues. That’s about to change.
Sam Pollard’s “The League” is an eye-opening slice of American baseball’s 154-year history. In fact, the recent rule changes imposed on the Majors by Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred were inspired in part by the practices of the Negro Leagues: while Babe Ruth focused on home runs (like many players today), these extraordinary Black athletes favored a fast, hit-and-run, base-stealing game.
“If you watch footage of Jackie Robinson from the ’40s and the ’50s, his style of play, his aggressiveness, all came from the Negro Leagues,” Oscar-nominated documentary director Pollard told IndieWire during a recent interview. “If you watch the players who integrated Major League Baseball,...

Sam Pollard’s “The League” Is Not Your Typical Baseball Doc.
The documentary filmmaker grew up in the 1960s watching the St. Louis Cardinals, whose roster of players included Black or Latino players including Bill White, Curt Flood, Orlando Cepeda and Lou Brock, but did not know much about the Negro Leagues that existed when the sport was still segregated.
“I knew who Jackie Robinson was and that it was because of him Blacks had integrated the Major Leagues in 1947,” says Pollard. “But what I did not know much about in 1964 at the age of 14 was that he had come out of the Negro Leagues and that the Negro Leagues had been home to Black and Latino ballplayers who had to play segregated baseball during the height of the Jim Crow era.”
While some segregation in the sport always existed, the color line in baseball was not rigidly enforced until...

In eye-opening documentary The League, director Sam Pollard tells a fully-rounded tale of how Black baseball used to thrive
Sam Pollard inherited his love for baseball from his father, a fan of the St Louis Cardinals – Black America’s team in the 1960s. Growing up in New York just made it a long-distance affair. “They had some phenomenal players,” Pollard recalls to the Guardian. “Lou Brock, Curt Flood, Bob Gibson, Bill White. And then when I got to be 14, 15 years old, I really wanted to understand their lineage. Where did they come from?”
Decades later, the director retraces that Black baseball genealogy in The League – a new Questlove-produced documentary on the rise, fall and last impact of the Negro Leagues, the professional baseball association that sprang up in the long shadow of Jim Crow. It’s a history famously touched on in Ken Burns’s seminal docuseries Baseball. But in The League,...

The story of the Negro baseball leagues has the hallmarks of a feel-good story: determination, inventiveness, and relentless optimism in the face of unyielding hatred. But while Sam Pollard’s mostly straightforward and celebratory documentary The League doesn’t skimp on those elements, he also introduces knottier emotions that allow the film, which is executive produced by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, to escape two-dimensionality.
Unlike many other manifestations of American racial prejudice, baseball in its early years was at least somewhat integrated. The historians here describe how late-19th-century baseball featured largely white teams with occasional Black players. In the film’s telling, this relative openness started coming to an end after an 1883 game where star white player and manager Adrian Constantine Anson, nicknamed “Pop” and “Cap,” refused to play an integrated team. When the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson “separate but equal” ruling provided legal justification for segregation, the practice became standardized across many American institutions,...

In what should have been a typical day at school for the celebrity group, model Amber Rose, 39, and TV personality Joseline Hernandez, 36, got into a heated debate about racial identity in an episode of College Hill: Celebrity Edition that ended in a physical fight.
College Hill is a reality show that follows college students that attend historically black colleges. The celebrity edition features a group of celebrities who live together as they go to college together. The celebrity group this season attends classes at Alabama State University and includes Parker Posey, Iman Shumpert, Tiffany NY Pollard, O’ryan Browner, Ray J and Kwaylon Rogers.
During their African American literature class with Dr. Jacqueline Trimble, Browner read a Langston Hughes poem called “Harlem Sweeties.” The professor then asked the class what they think the poet was talking about.

"Man, they didn't care about making no history. They just wanted to play ball!" Magnolia Pics unveiled an official trailer for a documentary film titled The League, premiering soon at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival in NYC. This is another new doc from the hard-working masterful doc filmmaker Sam Pollard, best known for his recent films including Mr. Soul!, MLK/FBI, Citizen Ashe, and Bill Russell: Legend. The film tells the story of the the Negro League in baseball, that was originally formed in 1920. "Executive producer Ahmir 'Questlove' Thompson shed light on that history with The League, revealing how the dynamic style of Black baseball players came to define the way the game is played today. With the eye of a historian, Pollard delves into how Black professionals formed Negro League baseball, building a unique sporting culture [as well as a] community of their own." Yeah, this looks terrific. I'll definitely be watching this baseball doc this summer.

Mumbai, April 30 (Ians) April 24, 2023 was a special day for India but it was doubly special for Mumbai Indians. The day not just marked the great Sachin Tendulkar turning 50, it also marked the ten-year anniversary of Rohit Sharma captaining Mumbai Indians for the first time ever.
As the Mumbai Indians return to the Wankhede Stadium to take on Rajasthan Royals on Sunday, the team and coaching staff spoke about captain Hitman Rohit Sharma’s decade at the helm.
Kieron Pollard, the team’s batting coach and one of the players in the Mi setup, when Rohit took over captaincy in the middle of the season in 2013, said, “He’s grown as a leader. I mean he’s grown into leadership. Obviously, it was entrusted onto him in 2013 in the middle of a season. He was still pretty young at that point in time.”

Television shows are, inevitably, made up of parts. On the surface, there’s the great, overarching story that begins with the first shot and ends with the last. But, within that narrative, there are small parts: the series, and the episode. It is the smallest of these sub-divisions, the episode, that is most intriguing. A truly brilliant episode can bridge the gap between cinema and TV. It can refine the essence of the best shows into a single, self-contained moment. At its most potent, a perfect episode is like mainlining all the myriad ingredients of prestige television in a single sitting.
But great TV shows do not necessarily beget great episodes and, conversely, great episodes are not always the sign of a great show. The start of 2023 has been dominated by discussions about The Last of Us, a perfectly good series including one stunning episode. In it, two supporting characters...

Mumbai, April 7 (Ians) Mumbai Indians would have hoped to have started their campaign in the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (Ipl) on a better note than the massive eight-wicket defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore in an away match.
As they get ready to play their first match of the season at their home venue, the iconic Wankhede Stadium, against Chennai Super Kings on Saturday, Mumbai Indians will be hoping that the return to their home venue will bring an upswing in their fortunes. Mi will be hoping to gain their first points in Ipl 2023 against Chennai Super Kings.
Their performance in the first match showed that many of the areas of concern remain for the five-time Ipl winners.
Asked to bat first, Mumbai Indians’ batting failed to click as they could manage only 171/7 in 20 overs. Rcb overhauled the score easily with Virat Kohli hammering an unbeaten 83 off 49 balls...

Netflix’s latest sports docuseries, “Bill Russell: Legend,” is sandwiched between its 10-part tennis series, “Break Point,” and its eight-part golf series, “Full Swing,” in a string of non-fiction programming demonstrating the streamer’s commitment to chronicling athletic excellence. Although there have been other docs made about Russell, a Boston Celtics legend who won 11 championships during his career, Netflix is calling this latest nonfiction film about the 6-foot-10-inch center the “definitive documentary.”
In the series, Oscar-nominated documentarian Sam Pollard, who recently spotlighted tennis great Arthur Ashe in “Citizen Ashe,” traces Russell’s groundbreaking career on the court as well as his role as a civil rights pioneer and activist. Last November, HBO premiered Nelson George’s Say Hey, Willie Mays!, a sturdy documentary that explored the life of the baseball icon — including an underlying argument about Willie Mays’ role, or lack thereof, in the civil rights movement and how that shaped his public image.
George, one of our most prolific and deservedly acclaimed documentarians, has a key role as talking head in Bill Russell: Legend, a new Netflix two-parter from Sam Pollard (Citizen Ashe), one of the few filmmakers able to rival George’s steady output.
In Bill Russell: Legend, George doesn’t directly compare Mays and Russell, but sports documentary devotees will find the link to be irresistible. Russell and Mays were foundational performers whose place on the respective Mt. Rushmores of their sports wouldn’t be in question except for recency bias.

Abu Dhabi Feb 4 (Ians) Breezy knocks by consistent opener Muhammad Waseem and skipper Kieron Pollard backed by Dwayne Bravo’s three-wicket spell carried Mi Emirates into the playoffs with an impressive 18-run win over Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the 26th match of the Dp World ILT20 here.
Abu Dhabi Knight Riders’ winless run continued after they let Mi Emirates post 180 for 4 in 20 overs through some poor fielding and unimpressive bowling at the Zayed Cricket Stadium on Friday night.
Dropping Waseem thrice, they let the high-scoring UAE opener flourish and hit 60 runs off 43 balls with six sixes and one boundary. Skipper Pollard’s cameo of 43 off just 17 balls with four boundaries and three sixes swelled the total.
