Dozens of top Hollywood creatives and activists have signed an open letter in response to the shuttering of production company Participant — imploring the industry to continue to effect change through film and television as the defunct company once did.
George Clooney, Aflonso Cuarón, Ava DuVernay, Jane Fonda, Regina King, Viola Davis, #MeToo founder Tarana Burke, civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson, Color of Change president Rashad Robinson and more are signators, in addition to groups like GLAAD and Human Rights Watch. The letter was coordinated by the National Domestic Workers Alliance (Ndwa), which collaborated with Participant and director Cuarón on a visibility campaign for his 2018 Oscar winner “Roma.”
“As we say goodbye to Participant, we must underscore that values-based storytelling is needed now more than ever,” the letter states. “There is a whole ecosystem of people, connected by the work of the last 20 years of Participant, ready to work with you.

Update: An earlier version of this story said Twitter will stream the film on its app; that was incorrect. The tech company will be handling outreach for “Run This Town.”
Twitter is linking with Oscilloscope Laboratories to do outreach on Ricky Tollman’s feature film debut, “Run This Town,” starring Grammy and Tony award-winner Ben Platt as a precocious journalist who stumbles into a life-altering story. The film will release day-and-date on March 6.
“Run This Town” follows Bram, a young newspaper intern who desperately wants to cover hard-hitting news but is stuck writing listicles; his fortunes suddenly change when he luckily finds some salacious information on ex-Toronto mayor Rob Ford and is thrust into a hasty investigation that links him with two of the mayor’s aides. The Twitter-Oscilloscope partnership comes a year after the film debuted at the SXSW Film Festival.

YouTube and Roadside Attractions will partner up to theatrically release “Viper Club” starring Susan Sarandon, Matt Bomer, Edie Falco and Lola Kirke.
“Viper Club” will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and will be released in theaters on Oct. 26, as well as being available on YouTube Premium next year.
The theatrical partnership is a left turn — and a traditional one — for the service, as only a year ago they were prepared to disrupt the release window with a splashy $3.5 million Sundance acquisition, TheWrap previously reported.

YouTube is to launch Susan Sarandon-fronted thriller Viper Club theatrically after partnering with Roadside Attractions.
The Google-owned company has struck a deal with the Manchester By The Sea and Winter’s Bone distributor to launch Maryam Keshavarz’s drama in theaters on October 26 ahead of its debut on its YouTube Premium service in 2019.
The move marks a slight shift in strategy for YouTube, which has previously focused on launching titles online. While, for instance, it booked short runs for the Barbara Kopple doc This Is Everything: Gigi Gorgeous that it picked up, it had previously dismissed full theatrical runs for acquisitions.
Written by Iranian-American filmmaker Keshavarz and Jonathan Mastro, Viper Club, which has its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, stars Sarandon alongside Matt Bomer (Normal Heart), Lola Kirke (Gone Girl), Adepero Oduye (The Big Short), Sheila Vand (Argo) and Edie Falco (The Sopranos).

YouTube inked a pact with Roadside Attractions to release “Viper Club,” Maryam Keshavarz’s drama starring Susan Sarandon, in U.S. theaters this fall — as Google sets its sights on a potential Oscar or Golden Globes win.
The film will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival (which runs Sept. 6-18) and will be released in theaters on Oct. 26, 2018. “Viper Club” will become available on YouTube Premium, the $9.99 subscription service, in 2019.
It’s the first YouTube original film to get a theatrical release. Roadside hasn’t set specific rollout plans for “Viper Club” (only in the U.S.) but the film will be positioned to take advantage of the awards-season corridor.
The film was previously called “Vulture Club” and the name was changed to “Viper Club” in the last few weeks. Asked why the title changed, a YouTube rep said only that the former was a working title.

YouTube Red is taking a tentative step toward becoming more like Amazon Studios with the announcement of an in-house production that it says will see a theatrical release.

The film also stars Julian Morris (“Pretty Little Liars”), Edie Falco, and Matt Bomer. Producers are J.C. Chandor, Anna Gerb, and Neal Dodson.
While YouTube Red announced that principal photography is complete, details on how it plans to release it in theaters are slim.

One of the best films of 2015, A Most Violent Year was about New York City in its most crime-ridden year of 1981. Oscar Isaac starred as ambitious Colombian immigrant Abel Morales, who began his career as a truck driver for a heating oil biz run by a mobster whose daughter Anna (Jessica Chastain) he eventually married. Abel took over ‘Standard Heating Oil’, and grew it quickly – but too quickly in the eyes of his competitors. As the movie opened, Abel and his attorney (Albert Brooks) are on the verge of a big move – borrowing a million and a half dollars to buy two oil tanks in a prime area of Queens. With 30 days to secure the cash needed to close the deal, it’s a risky investment, but if all goes according to Abel’s plan, he will eventually be able to store and move fuel on a larger scale. But...

Pointing to a specific seat in the front orchestra section of the vast Dolby Theatre before Thursday’s AFI Fest opening-night world premiere of his new film A Most Violent Year, writer-director Jc Chandor said “the last time I was in this room I was sitting right there and I lost to Woody Allen. Let’s hope it goes a little better tonight.”
Chandor was referring to the 2012 Oscar show, in which he was nominated for Original Screenplay for his first feature Margin Call. Although (unfairly I thought) overlooked by the Academy last year for his second film, All Is Lost — which at the very least should have snagged star Robert Redford a Best Actor nod but didn’t — I have a feeling he could perhaps find himself back at the Dolby in February in that same category where he duked it out with Woody.

Chicago – All is lost. It’s is a phrase uttered by countless adventurers across human history. It speaks of resignation and despair. We hear it in voiceover during PBS documentaries when the narrator reads someone’s diary or letter to explain the last little bit of a fellow human’s final stand against nature or the ardors of travel.
But in this masterful film by writer/director/producer J.C. Chandor, those three words become a homily inviting the viewer to simply watch and contemplate their own adventure and whether they are living well.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
The adventurer in this story is unnamed and played by Robert Redford in a role that offers no dialogue. Scant voiceover narration and a brief radio interaction are the only moments that offer a human voice. Instead, Chandor chooses to sell the story via Redford’s masterful, understated performance and his own impressive grasp of how...

Back in 2011, I was impressed by Margin Call, a sharply written financial drama that featured a talented ensemble cast including Kevin Spacey and Zachary Quinto. Its writer-director, J.C. Chandor, was a fresh face to Hollywood, but his raw talent was undeniable. Now, Chandor is back for his sophomore writer-director effort with a film that’s almost Margin Call‘s polar opposite. All Is Lost, a mesmerizing tale of one man battling against the merciless ocean, features almost no dialogue, one cast member (the indomitable Robert Redford) and an ambiguity that’s crucial to its overall impact.
As All Is Lost opens, we hear a voiceover from Redford’s character, credited only as “Our Man.” Redford is apologizing for unspecified mistakes and conceding that he has failed in some way or another. It’s the film’s most extensive use of dialogue. When that voiceover fades away, the camera enters a sailboat,...

Coming off the back of his acclaimed sophomore feature, All Is Lost, J.C. Chandor is about to go back behind the camera for his anticipated third film, A Most Violent Year.
Out in Park City, the film market has been heating up in recent days, and one of the biggest companies to make their mark so far has been A24.
The distribution/production company has been very much on the rise since their debut last year with Roman Coppola’s A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, with releases including Ginger & Rosa, Spring Breakers, and most recently The Spectacular Now.
So it should come as no surprise then that they are keen to cement their status, announcing that they have acquired U.S. rights to Chandor’s A Most Violent Year, led by Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain.

Check out this new behind-the-scenes featurette for J.C. Chandor's survival tale "All Is Lost," starring Robert Redford, which hits theaters today. In the featurette, Redford, Chandor, and producers Neal Dodson and Anna Gerb, among others, discuss the production of the film, and its simple but powerful premise: An unnamed man, late in life, takes a many-month sail into the Indian Ocean, and encounters an unforeseen accident that has him fighting for his life over the course of several days. 77-year-old Redford has maybe half a dozen lines throughout the entire film, and gives an impressive physical performance, being thrown around the deck of the boat, flipped around insides its cabin, hoisting himself up the mast and plunged into deep water. (Our Toh! coverage of Redford's tribute at Telluride is here.)...

Javier Bardem has lined up two films for himself: Pierre Morel’s The Gunman and J.C. Chandor’s A Most Violent Year. In the former, he’ll be going up against Sean Penn, while the latter puts him in a project with Chandor, who previously directed the brilliant Margin Call.
The Gunman is an adaptation of Jean-Patrick Manchette’s 1981 noir novel The Prone Gunman. Sean Penn will star as Martin Terrier, a hired killer who wants out of the game but his bosses in the Organization won’t let him out. Reports say that Bardem will play one of the killers sent after Terrier.
