It’s been a rough few weeks for indies but May is here with a handful of hopefuls looking to rev up the market — from A24’s buzzy I Saw The TV Glow to Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Venice award-winning Evil Does Not Exist. A documentary about Anita Pallenberg featuring Scarlett Johansson hits theaters, with a French animated sci-fi set on Mars, and a Flannery O’Conner biopic by Ethan Hawke.
I Saw The TV Glow is written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun (We’re All Going To The World’s Fair) and produced by Emma Stone under her Fruit Tree Banner. The horror-thriller that gripped Sundance (Deadline review called it a “trippy gut punch”) then SXSW follows a teenager named Owen trying to make it through life in the suburbs. The weirdness starts when his classmate introduces him to a mysterious late-night TV show, a vision of a supernatural world beneath their own.

In the first major sale ahead of the Cannes Film Festival, A24 has acquired the North American rights to the competition title “Parthenope” from director Paolo Sorrentino, the distributor announced Friday, May 3.
“Parthenope” is the latest film from the Oscar winner Sorrentino, who will be competing for the Palme d‘Or for the seventh time. A24 describes the film as a “monumental and deeply romantic story of a lifetime.”
The film follows the titular character Parthenope, who is born in the sea of Naples in 1950 and searches for happiness over the long summers of her youth, falling in love with her home city and its many memorable characters. From Sorrentino, who also wrote the script, we expect a lot of lush Italian vistas and colorful, garish interiors.
The film features Gary Oldman and also stars, in alphabetical order, Dario Aita, Celeste Dalla Porta, Silvia Degrandi, Isabella Ferrari, Lorenzo Gleijeses, Biagio Izzo,...

Ryan Gosling was recently asked by The Wall Street Journal Magazine if there is any role from his Hollywood career that he’d like to do over again. The answer is surprisingly “La La Land,” Damian Chazelle’s acclaimed 2016 musical that earned Gosling an Oscar nomination for best actor and won his co-star Emma Stone the Oscar for best actress. Chazzelle won best director. So why would Gosling want to do it again? It all comes down to a dance mistake that continues to haunt him.
“‘La La Land.’ There is a moment that haunts me,” Gosling said. “We’re dancing, Emma and I, and I didn’t know this would become the poster for the movie. We were supposed to have our hands up, and I thought it would be cool to put my hand [more flat] even though everyone told me it wasn’t cool. I was sure it was cooler.

Although Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland are loved as the web-slingers in their own respective places, Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man was just a bit different. Maybe it was his physique or just his impeccable performance in the role, but what can’t be denied is just how distinctive his version of Peter Parker was — something that further made fans yearn for his unmade third installment.

That being said, the third installment in his film series would have unarguably further explained the greatest mystery related to his friendly neighborhood superhero. But since the film never came to be, fans thought it better to ask Garfield to unwind that mystery. However, as surprising as it may be, it turns out that even the 40-year-old actor is as much in the dark about this as everyone else!

Christopher Nolan never ceases to leave his audiences amused. Be it through the absolutely jaw-dropping masterpieces he creates for the big screens or simply the way he prefers to spend his life (which notably includes ‘without a smartphone’), the mastermind filmmaker somehow manages to leave his fans surprised down to the core in the most unimaginable of ways.

Recently, following the release of the Emma Stone-starrer critically acclaimed series The Curse, Nolan did the same. However this time, he didn’t stun and leave his fans confused and unable to believe it through some strange tactic. Instead, this time, it was simply through his reaction to the finale of the 2023 series, which he seems to have texted showrunner Benny Safdie about!

Ryan Gosling is living his best life these days. Or certainly his funniest. After earning an Academy Award nomination purely based on his ability to persuasively turn “Kenergy” into a noun in last summer’s Barbie, he brought that pure, uncut Ken stuff to the Oscar stage. No, not by winning the prize, but by taking home the hearts and minds of the internet with an epic performance of “I’m Just Ken.”
In hindsight, the spectacle of it all might be viewed as a turning point in his career as audiences embrace the guy who seemed so stoic and tortured in the 2010s—with his understated leading roles in Drive, Blade Runner 2049, Blue Valentine, and First Man—as actually a great comedy talent. His next studio vehicle, The Fall Guy, is in theaters now, and we can vouch for it being a breezy, lighthearted entertainment given life by...

Disney’s 2017 Beauty and the Beast live-action remake is one of the most critical and commercial hits by the House of the Mouse. The Emma Watson film holds the record of being the second-highest-grossing Disney live-action remake. However, the initial casting of the film was much different with Ryan Gosling in the role of Beast.
A still from Beauty and the Beast
The 2017 Bill Condon directorial had Emma Watson and Dan Stevens leading the film. Stevens played the Beast through motion capture opposite Watson’s Belle. While the current scenario of Disney live-action remakes is not going well, Beauty and the Beast was praised for being faithful to the source material and offering a fresh retelling at the same time.

Ryan Gosling has revealed a moment in 2016’s La La Land that still “haunts” him to this day.
In an interview for WSJ Magazine‘s “The One” video series, the actor admitted that if he could, he would reshoot the film’s dance sequence with co-star Emma Stone that was featured on the movie’s promo poster. As for his reason why, it’s all because of what he described as his “La La Hand.”
“There’s a moment that haunts me where we’re dancing, Emma and I. I didn’t know this would become the poster for the movie,” The Fall Guy actor said before letting out a long sigh. “But I thought we were supposed to have our hands up and I thought it’d be cool to put my hand like that,” referring to his wrist slanting down compared to Stone’s hand, as seen in the photo above.

Ryan Gosling takes a lot into consideration before choosing his next movie role.
The Oscar-nominated actor recently opened up to The Wall Street Journal about his decision to avoid taking on darker projects so that he can be present with his family.
“I don’t really take roles that are going to put me in some kind of dark place,” he said. “This moment is what I feel like trying to read the room at home and feel like what is going to be best for all of us. The decisions I make, I make them with [wife] Eva [Mendes], and we make them with our family in mind first.”
Gosling and Mendes, who met prior to starring together in 2012’s The Place Beyond the Pines, share two daughters, Esmeralda Amada and Amada Lee.

After a shortened 2022-23 season, Saturday Night Live returned a bit later than usual to kick off its 2023-24 run.
The writers strike affected both the end of last season and the start of season 49; the end of the labor action on Sept. 25 meant a mid-October start for SNL — with former castmember Pete Davidson hosting — rather than the late September or early October premiere the show usually has. (The cast is covered under a different SAG-AFTRA contract than the one actors are currently striking against, so they can perform without crossing picket lines.)
The show’s cast returned intact from last season, with James Austin Johnson and Sarah Sherman moving up from featured players to repertory players. Chloe Troast joined the cast as a featured player.
Below is The Hollywood Reporter’s updating guide to season 49’s SNL hosts and musical guests.

Hold on to your butts, Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone are re-teaming for the new movie Checkmate, according to the Hollywood Reporter. It’s an adaptation of Ben Mezrich’s upcoming non-fiction book of the same name, which dives into a 2022 scandal that rocked the chess world.
Fielder and Stone last blew our minds with The Curse, a black comedy at Showtime. This time around Fielder is set to direct while Stone’s Fruit Tree banner will produce. The whole project will be led by A24, which blew away offers from much larger studios with a reported seven-figure guarantee. “I’ve never seen A24 do that before,” THR quotes one insider saying. And what could make A24 this excited?
In 2022, at the St. Louis stop on the Grand Chess Tour, 19-year-old Hans Niemann upset Magnus Carlsen, the 31-year-old world No. 1 and arguably the strongest player of all time. As a...

Back in 2022, world champion chess player Magnus Carlsen quit the Sinquefield Cup pro tournament in St. Louis, Missouri, after a surprising loss to a 19-year-old, Hans Niemann. What started as a speculative drama about why Carlsen quit or how Niemann won in the first place quickly spiraled into accusations of cheating, an unsuccessful legal battle, and what’s considered to be the biggest scandal in chess history. Now, that story is receiving the film treatment at A24.
Emma Stone will produce the cheating scandal film alongside Dave McCary, her husband and production partner.

After more than proving his directing mettle with Nathan For You and The Rehearsal, Nathan Fielder entered another echelon with The Curse, helming seven episodes (including the mind-bending finale). Now, the comedian, actor, writer, and director has notched another step in his filmmaking ascendancy with the announcement of his feature directorial debut.
THR reports he’ll reteam with The Curse star and producer Emma Stone and her company Fruit Tree for Checkmate, which A24 has picked up. Emma Stone knows to stick with what is working as she follows up her 2023 projects (which have garnered significant attention) with more from the same collaborators. Stone recently won an Academy Award for her performance in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things. Lanthimos would also already release a trailer for his next film, Kinds of Kindness, earlier this year and Stone is among the principal cast. Other than Poor Things, last year, Stone would star in a limited series for Showtime with comedic actor Nathan Fielder in a surreal dark comedy called The Curse, which would also feature a collaboration with Benny Safdie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Stone will also be reuniting with Fielder for another project with A24. The indie studio that features a bevy of off-beat films has recently had its biggest title with Civil War, and the company played its moves aggressively to beat out bigger studios for Checkmate.

Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man series may not have ended in a trilogy, but it surely won a lot of hearts for his portrayal of Peter Parker. There are not a lot of Marvel heroes with a tragic story like the beloved webhead, but he still manages to smile through the clouds of sorrow.
Something that every Spider-Man tale has in common, other than his suffering, is that he is an orphan, having lost both his parents at a young age. Not much is known about them through the films, just that they were scientists and worked for a secret organization. However, a deleted scene from Tasm 2 changes a lot of things.

The alternate ending, if kept, would have softened the heartbreaking blow Peter received when Gwen Stacy died and would have given him the much-needed motivation to wear his iconic mask back once again.

Following the success of The Curse, Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder are again teaming with A24 to produce Checkmate, a movie based on the chess world’s biggest scandal.
Chess can be absorbing subject material for drama, whether it’s a glossy period piece such as Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit, or more left-field takes like 2013’s Computer Chess. Perhaps chess movies are like Robin Hood projects: there are always several in development in Hollywood and it becomes a strategic game of, well… erm, chess to see who can put one together first.
The latest chess project is being produced by Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder, and A24 have reportedly spent a seven-figure sum to secure the rights to it. Why the buzz? Following the success of “The Curse,” Emma Stone, Nathan Fielder and A24 are teaming up again to take on the cutthroat world of chess.
The studio has won the rights to the hot feature package “Checkmate,” based on a book proposal by author Ben Mezrich, whose works were adapted into “The Social Network” and “Dumb Money.”
The story centers on what has been described as the “biggest scandal in the history of chess,” following the controversial 2022 head-to-head match between Grandmasters Magnus Carlsen, then world champion, and Hans Niemann, during which the latter was accused of cheating.
After a competitive situation in which multiple studios and streamers showed interest in the project, A24 nabbed the rights thanks to a reported seven-figure offer. The deals are still in the works, but Fielder is currently attached to direct, with Stone on board to produce with her husband and partner Dave McCary under their Fruit Tree banner.

A24, operating on its new mandate to act aggressively in the pursuit of projects, just outplayed the Hollywood studios and streamers in order to pick up Checkmate, a hot feature package centered on a book proposal by Ben Mezrich, the author whose books were adapted into films such The Social Network and Dumb Money.
If deals close, Checkmate will reteam Emma Stone with Nathan Fielder, who both adorned the most recent edition of The Hollywood Reporter magazine and the stars of the Showtime series The Curse. Fielder is attached to direct, while Stone will produce along with her husband and partner Dave McCary via the duo’s Fruit Tree banner. It also reunites the pair with A24, which backed The Curse. Sources say the book deal is closing or has closed while the talent deals are still being hammered out.

Julio Torres is crediting Ryan Gosling for being a “world-builder” of a comedic actor.
The “Problemista” writer/director/star told Entertainment Weekly that Gosling had more than a few sketch ideas when he returned to host “SNL.” Torres previously worked as a “Saturday Night Live” writer, and also returned with a skit per Gosling’s request to follow-up their viral “Papyrus” sequence parodying the font used in James Cameron’s “Avatar.” And much like the “Avatar” franchise itself, Gosling had a vision for making multiple installments of the “Papyrus” sketch.
“With no Ryan Gosling, there’s no ‘Papyrus 1,’ and there’s no ‘Papyrus 2,’” Torres said. “The first one was this sort of throwaway joke I made that he really latched on to. He was like, ‘Oh, I think maybe there’s an idea there,’ and I was like, ‘I really don’t think so.’ I didn’t tell him that,...

It’s been a few months since I saw Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw the TV Glow at Sundance Film Festival and I haven’t been able to shake its overwhelming, ultimately terrifying power. Telling the story of Owen (played early on by Ian Foreman and later by Justice Smith in a revelatory performance) we follow a journey questioning his identity through childhood and adulthood, and particularly a special infatuation with a late-night TV show and the ineradicable bond it creates with another lonely soul, Maddy (Brigette Lundy-Paine).
As I said in my review, “The deeply expressive, imaginative ways in which Schoenbrun is able to articulate one’s struggle with identity is nothing short of staggering. This may not be a horror film in the conventional sense––in fact, every directorial decision assertively refutes convention––but I Saw the TV Glow emphatically argues nothing is more terrifying than being trapped...

The series, also starring Torres, will debut this June on HBO and will be available to stream on Max. New episodes of the six-episode season will debut weekly.
In Fantasmas, Julio Torres tells the tale of when he lost a golden oyster. The people he encounters as he searches for it and the musings he has become points of departure for little films along the way.
Torres navigates, weaving in and out of these introspective, often eerie comedic stories.
The show is executive-produced by Julio Torres. The co-executive producer is Ali Herting.
Emma Stone and Dave McCary for Fruit Tree, Alex Bach and Daniel Powell for Irony Point, and Olivia Gerke for 3 Arts also serve as executive producers.

Reese Witherspoon was one of the A-list celebrities who paid tribute to Nicole Kidman on Saturday as she received the Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute (AFI). Not surprisingly, Witherspoon dressed in black for the occasion.

It’s no secret that the 48-year-old Sweet Home Alabama actress has gone through several different styles over the years. Remember her Legally Blonde era? She used to embrace a feminine, delicate style but now prefers a more mature, glamorous look that fits her age.
Reese is known for her love of timeless black dresses, which, although polished and elegant, can often become boring—like the outfit she wore to the PaleyFest LA. I’m glad her recent red carpet appearance wasn’t as dull as expected.

What celebrities wear to awards shows is, at this point, pretty predicable. The protocol of Hollywood legacy demands they dress at least relatively tame.
But fashion people going to an awards show where they’re the celebs? There are no decorum dictates there! From gowns to shorts, heels to moto boots, fur to chiffon, minis to maxis, trad plaids to 3D florals, it was all on show at The Daily Front Row’s Eighth Annual Fashion Los Angeles Awards on Sunday night at the Beverly Hills Hotel — on ladies and gentlemen.
At this awards show — where honorees included the legendary Bob Mackie, A-list hairstylist Adir Abergel, makeup artist Rachel Goodwin, models Elsa Hosk and Amelia Gray, and The Hollywood Reporter co-editor-in-chief Maer Roshan — the dress code “anything goes” is an understatement.

One of the most anticipated and hottest films of 2024 is finally here. We are talking about Zendaya‘s Challengers which was memed to death for a threesome scene that was shown in the trailer but if you have seen the film then you know that the brilliance of the film is much more than that one scene. “I Saw the TV Glow” director Jane Schoenbrun finally celebrated their second feature at the film’s New York City premiere on Wednesday, April 24, in partnership with Rooftop Films. But “I Saw the TV Glow” first premiered back in January at Sundance, under the banner of A24, and with Emma Stone and Dave McCary’s production company Fruit Tree.
“I sent it to [Fruit Tree] and a couple other people, and they were like, ‘Hey, we wanna work with you,'” Schoenbrun told IndieWire. “Then I got a call from Emma Stone who was like, ‘Thank you so much for your business,’ and I was like, ‘You’re welcome!'”
The visually striking film follows two teens who are obsessed with a disturbing young adult TV show that, once canceled, starts to bleed into reality for the characters. David Ehrlich wrote in IndieWire’s review that the film “marries the queer radicality...

This article will contain some spoilers for Challengers, so reader beware if you haven’t seen Luca Guadagnino’s new film…
Tennis isn’t for everyone – some people just want their Spidey fix. That’s what happens in one scene of Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers, where the daughter of Tashi (Zendaya) and Art (Mike Faist) asks to watch a Spider-Verse movie instead of tennis. But as the director explains, it wasn’t meant to be directly linked to Zendaya’s own Spider-Man movies.
As Guadagnino told Entertainment Weekly, those thinking that Spider-Verse moment in Challengers was an intentional easter egg are mistaken, as it was really just out of circumstances. “When you get rights for something to be used in a movie, it’s very complicated. Amy Pascal, our amazing producer, was of help there. I said, ‘Amy, can we use one of your catalog titles so it’s going...

Oscar-winning actress Emma Stone has expressed her preference to be called by her given name, Emily, rather than the name she adopted at the beginning of her career. The 35-year-old star shared with The Hollywood Reporter: “That would be so nice. I would like to be Emily.”
Although the actress initially adopted her stage name when she registered for the Screen Actors Guild, she actually prefers when her colleagues use her birth name, as reported by femalefirst.co.uk.
She explained: “When I get to know them, people that I work with do. It’s just because my name was taken (by another actress in SAG).
“Then I freaked out a couple of years ago. For some reason, I was like, ‘I can’t do it anymore. Just call me Emily.’ Nathan calls me Em, which is easier.”
Stone previously disclosed that her stage name was inspired by Spice Girls star Emma Bunton.
