Had “Primal” decided to remain what the show was for most of its first season, it would still be one of TV’s best. It solidified itself as a fascinating spin on the adventure show, a Genndy Tartakovsky-created journey through some of the more ruthless corners of Nature. Burly man Spear (voiced in grunts and screams by Aaron Laplante) and upright-walking dinosaur Fang made for an on-screen team-up that went from anachronistic to undeniable over the course of its first ten episodes. That bond forged over Season 1 in spite of the show having next to no spoken dialogue (or maybe because of it). Instead of words exchanged between the two, they united in action, fighting off massive spiders, zombie sauropods, chimps hopped up on Neolithic steroids, and a bevy of other foes lurking in forests and jungles.

That’s a wrap on all three of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards shows, so let the music play!
“RuPaul’s Drag Race,” the reality competition series which is hosted by drag queen RuPaul Charles, won big with five Emmys in several categories, including Outstanding Casting for a Reality Program, Outstanding Directing for a Reality Program and Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program (which is RuPaul’s sixth straight Emmy win for the category).
Also, to further the franchise’s stardom, “RuPaul’s Drag Race Untucked,” a behind-the-scenes spinoff of the reality series, won the unstructured reality category for the first time.
None of this weekend’s three Creative Arts shows were televised. Next Saturday, a highlights show of sorts will air on Fxx starting at 8 p.m. Et/Pt.
The *real* Emmys, hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, air live next Sunday, Sept. 19, starting at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.

“The Masked Singer” is now a two-time Emmy winner for its wild, wacky and breathtaking costumes. (We can already hear Piglet oinking in delight.) The costume design team, led by Marina Toybina (watch our recent interview), claimed its first trophy last year at the 2020 Creative Arts ceremony, but now this category has been changed to a juried award, so it gets voted on weeks before all of the other races. Fox’s “The Masked Singer” shares its second prize in the Variety/Nonfiction/Reality Costumes category with two other programs — Disney+’s “Black Is King” and IFC’s “Sherman’s Showcase Black History Month Spectacular” — since juries can choose to award all of the nominees, some of the nominees or none of the nominees. Roaring through the screen, the first season of Genndy Tartakovsky’s ferocious animated series “Primal,” released in two parts between 2019 and 2020, tracks the prehistoric mishaps of Spear, an early man, and a female Tyrannosaurus known as Fang. Completely devoid of dialogue, the project thrives solely on the shrewdness of its cinematic imagery.
The artfully gruesome concept took shape following the more mature Season 5 of “Samurai Jack,” which was produced for Adult Swim. Overwhelmingly positive reactions to Tartakovsky and his team’s use of sequences propelled not by words but powerfully pointed visuals, got the animation maverick wondering if he could sustain a whole half-hour program with the same narrative constraints.
Enticed by the challenge, he unearthed one of his older ideas centering a boy and a dinosaur, and realized if he aged up the human character it could potentially serve as a gripping vehicle to explore raw violence. 10 initial episodes...

For a story about the ruthlessness of nature, it’s no surprise that “Primal” is built on scale. The newest animated series from prolific director Genndy Tartakovsky is, among other things, an exercise in size, matching palpable fear and danger to the physical space that the source of those feelings take up. Through the lens of two characters, a man and a dinosaur, “Primal” is a piece of elemental storytelling that finds some real emotional depth without either of its protagonists uttering a single word of dialogue.
In what eventually becomes a chronicle of an unconventional pairing, Tartakovsky and art director Scott Wills uses this latest hand-drawn TV effort to work inside familiar survival conventions and chip away at them from the inside. “Primal” is not an easy protagonist/sidekick tale, nor is it a glossy, sanitized Early Man friendship story. Spear (the man) and Fang (the tyrannosaur) are joined by a shared tangible tragedy,...

Troodons are featured in Walking with Dinosaurs 3D, which Wwd animator David Krentz describes as "a crazy raptor-like dinosaur." Troodons really demonstate the link between dinos and birds with arms that look exactly like chicken wings. In fact, paleontologists feel confident that Troodons had large feathers, although they don't believe Troodons could fly.
As the character designer for Walking with Dinosaurs, David Krentz has the awesome job of getting to draw dinos all day. In the video above, he shows KidsPickFlicks Exclusively how to draw Troodon. Check it out!
Walking with Dinosaurs 3D will be tromping into theaters on Dec. 20.

I think children of the 90's have the shared experience of being pelted with everything dinosaur. There was The Land Before Time, Jurassic Park, TV's Dinosaurs, and the many sequels that followed, not to mention museum exhibits and animatronic dinosaur experiences. At this point, I am predisposed to love dinosaur movies. How is it possible then that directors David Krentz and Erik Nelson with narrator Werner Herzog took a film about dinosaurs ripping each other limb-to-limb and made it so boring?
Dinotasia is a series of vignettes of mother dinosaurs protecting their babies, grown dinosaurs tearing each other apart, or dinosaur parents getting killed, leaving their baby dinosaurs behind. Between each vignette, Herzog provides ridiculous narration about how the world of dinosaurs is a stage and how there are no heroes or villains in nature. This is a series of dinosaurs fighting, and the film's narration is trying to convince...

About five minutes into David Krentz & Erik Nelson's CG animated feature, Dinotasia, the thought occurred to me that this film didn't look any better than any number of Discovery Channel TV programs. Suffice it to say, I was not surprised to learn Dinotasia does, in fact, find its origins in a Discovery Channel series titled Dinosaur Revolution. That being said, I'm a fan of those programs. My son and I watch shows like Clash of the Dinosaurs, Walking with Beasts, and Monsters Resurrected all the time. However, this film was marketed as a stand alone feature, and I feel as though that is a bit of a sketchy description. The ideas behind Dinotasia are certainly interesting. The filmmakers wanted to create short vignettes following one or two...

I’ll admit I had no idea what Dinotasia was until I read the following press release, and since then, it’s climbed up my Netflix queue like Sylvester Stallone in Cliffhanger. Or something that climbs well. The feature length animated film is co-directed by Werner Herzog as well as narrated by the guy (who has one of the top 24 voices in showbiz), and described as Sopranos meets prehistoric times. It has psychedelic drugs, violence, and some awesome visuals. Really, why hadn’t I heard of this before?! Get onboard people. It’s out now on DVD and Blu-Ray. The dinosaur has been a fascination with myself, like with so many both young and old. Such magnificent, yet enigmatic beasts that can only be imagined by those uneducated in the paleontological studies, the experts themselves cannot agree and are constantly finding themselves rewriting the textbooks on a species of creature hundreds of thousands, even millions of years prior to our very existence. This alone, on its very surface, is enough to call me thoroughly captivated.
Steven Spielberg first captured and capitalized on the possibilities of what I may call dino-tainment in 1993 with Jurassic Park. Even today, some nearly 20 years later, the film holds up spectacularly to the test of time. However, its the dinosaur itself whom truly stands the ultimate test of time. From cartoons and TV shows, children’s toys and public broadcasting specials, from the absolutely absurd to the most numbing narratives, dinosaurs never went extinct in our minds.

★★☆☆☆ A heady combination of Werner Herzog and dinosaurs should be enough to draw people to David Krentz and Erik Nelson's pseudo-documentary Dinotasia (2012), a dramatic retelling of a the age of the 'terrible lizards', leading up to the destruction of these prehistoric titans by a giant meteor crashing into the Earth. Sadly, this rambling retelling of the dinosaur's epic story quickly succeeds in dashing any positive expectations.

Dinotasia

Dinotasia is a strange beast, and this is even before we start to talk about the dinosaurs that populate the film. Narrated by Werner Herzog with a script that will somewhat confuse you, especially when this is being described as a documentary this is quite a unique look at the world of the dinosaur. If anything, you can at least say that any film narrated by Werner Herzog is going to be interesting.

It's rare to see teen-movie characters all grown up, and this illustrates the reason why: they just make us feel old. The gang's all here, reverting to their old non-pc habits even as they mourn their lost youth. It's patchy and often dodgy comedy, but there's still something heartening about Stifler's defiant idiocy and Jim's dad's middle-age second chance.

Heartfelt study of a young teen's formative romantic fortunes.
The Lucky One (12A)
(Scott Hicks,...
(Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, 2012, Us) Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Eugene Levy, Alyson Hannigan. 113 mins
Safe (15)
(Boaz Yakin, 2012, Us) Jason Statham, Catherine Chan. 94 mins
Triads, Russian mobsters, cops and everyone else in New York falls foul of Statham in another ludicrous but fast-moving actioner.
Two Years At Sea (U)
(Ben Rivers, 2012, UK) Jake Williams. 90 mins
Extraordinary, otherworldly observation of a modern-day Scottish hermit.
Goodbye First Love (15)

Dinosaurs may have died out 65 million years ago but mankind's knowledge about them continues to evolve and they remain an endless source of fascination and feature film material.
It's now widely accepted that many had plumage and in January the largest feathered dinosaur known was discovered in China. Yutyrannus huali (pictured above; click for a larger version) measured almost 30ft in length and weighed more than a tonne; it was a close cousin of T.rex but, unlike its famous relative, fossils show it was covered in downy feathers to keep it warm.
If Hollywood is taking note, maybe these latest discoveries will make it into Spielberg's planned Jurassic Park 4 or Barry Sonnenfeld's planned Dominion: Dinosaurs vs Aliens.
But in the meantime, there are other prehistoric-themed projects to sink your teeth into.

I don't know what fossil records contributed to the making of the series of CG-animated vignettes that make up Dinotasia, but it seems directors Erik Nelson and David Krentz found some evidence of a dead triceratops stabbing, an arm-ripping incident and other various dinosaur-on-dinosaur violence courtesy of today's palaeontologists. After that they teamed up with Werner Herzog to narrate the whole thing, which will open in London on May 4, which must be why The Avengers is opening on April 26 across the pond rather than its stateside May 4 debut. No sense in competing with this. The animation in this feature was originally created for the Discovery Channel series "Dinosaur Revolution" which aired last September, but not as it was originally intended. The trivia section at IMDb offers some interesting information on the production: ["Dinosaur Revolution" was originally] intended to be a comedic but more adult-oriented and silent animated show with no narration, until the Discovery Channel...
