- Joseph Antoine Ferdinand Plateau was the first person to demonstrate the illusion of a moving image-or motion picture-through animation. He used rotating disks using a device he called the "phenakistiscope", the first device to give the illusion of a moving image. - Plateau was so fascinated by the luminous impressions on the retina that he gazed directly into the sun for 25 seconds as an experiment. Although scientists think he had chronic uveitis, he was convinced that when he lost his eyesight later in his life, it was due to this experiment.
