As 2022 wraps up, the end of the year presents an opportunity to look back on how LGBTQ representation fared on the big screen. According to GLAAD’s 10th Annual Studio Responsibility Index, the percentage of LGBTQ-inclusive films (as well as racial diversity and screen time for queer characters) dipped in 2021.
While this year’s official report has yet to be released, it appears to have recovered some ground. From theaters to streamers, it’s been an impressive year for LGBTQ flicks, from joyful summer rom-coms “Bros” and “Fire Island” to sobering dramas like “My Policeman” and “The Inspection.” That includes some of the most talked-about titles of awards season – “The Whale,” “Tár”, and “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” to name a few.
If you’re looking for your next themed binge of the holiday break, read on for the 11 best LGBTQ movies of 2022.

In a pre-holiday surprise, megaproducer Greg Berlanti is leaving his longtime reps at WME for a new home at CAA. According to insiders, the decision to make the switch comes as Berlanti takes stock of his career — and as he approaches 50, aims to evolve his domain.
The jump from WME to CAA also coincides with big changes in the worlds that Berlanti is best known for: The CW, where Berlanti has produced countless shows and found some of his biggest success, is undergoing a massive change under its new Nexstar owners and looking to move away from its big budget, major studio series. And while Berlanti has defined a generation of DC TV shows via hits like “Arrow” and “The Flash,” the film side’s DC Studios is now under new leadership (James Gunn and Peter Safran). Both changes are said to have given Berlanti some pause, as the CW...

My Policeman is a 2022 drama movie starring Harry Styles, Emma Corrin and David Dawson. It is directed by Michael Grandage and it has been written by Ron Nyswaner. It is based on the novel by Bethan Roberts.

In the late 1990s, the arrival of Patrick, an elderly and disabled man, at Marion and Tom’s home triggers an exploration of seismic events from 40 years earlier: the passionate relationship between Tom and Patrick at a time when homosexuality was illegal.
My Policeman (2022) Movie Review
An elegant movie and, above all, a spectacular vintage reconstruction that knows how to capture the feeling of the time and the environment with all its coldness, and this is precisely why it has not gone down too well.
It has been received tepidly for its lack of personality, for its formal style and, above all, for telling a story that lacks novelty, and in a...

This review originally ran on September 11, 2022, for the film’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
A love triangle plays out over decades in Michael Grandage’s “My Policeman,” based on the 2012 novel by Bethan Roberts, who was inspired by the 40-year relationship between English novelist E.M. Forster and policeman Bob Buckingham, as well Buckingham’s wife, May, who also became close with Forster. As described by Roberts in a 2012 essay in The Guardian, this quiet, proto-polyamorous situation was “a wonderful muddle,” which seemingly worked for all three participants in their own way.
The relationship at the center of “My Policeman,” isn’t so much wonderful as it is tragic. Instead of finding a happily unconventional comfort as Forster and the Buckinghams may have, the three individuals in “My Policeman” end up jealous, unsatisfied and oppressed, and the film explores the ways in which one might attempt to right decades of wrongs.

Harry Styles has generated quite the buzz in the entertainment world outside of his music in 2022. From starring in Olivia Wilde's "Don't Worry Darling" to his cameo as Starfox in Marvel's "Eternals," the "As It Was" singer is taking on more acting projects and growing his film résumé. In Styles's latest film, "My Policeman," he shares the screen with "The Crown"'s Emma Corrin and David Dawson.
The film is based on the 2012 novel of the same name by Bethan Roberts and centers on a complicated love triangle that spans decades, with the nature of the relationship dangerous to all involved.
Ahead of its theatrical release on Oct. 21, here's the story that inspired "My Policeman."

Michael Grandage’s adaptation of a novel inspired by Forster’s famous ménage à trois conjours a mood of British postwar repression and guilt
Michael Grandage’s new film has been coolly received by some, but I found it an interestingly fragile and Rattiganesque melodrama of repression and regret. It is set on a gloomy English seafront and intercuts between the buttoned-up 1950s and the late 1990s. As an earnestly intended drama I can imagine it being performed on stage at a weekday matinee, the climactic speeches echoing wanly around the auditorium. But in its contrived way, it conjures a very English sort of shame.
Screenwriter Ron Nyswaner has adapted the novel by Bethan Roberts, itself inspired by the famous ménage between novelist Em Forster, Forster’s policeman lover Bob Buckingham and Bob’s wife, May. Linus Roache and Gina McKee play ageing married couple Tom and Marion, respectively a...

It’s more than just Harry, it’s an ensemble.
Amazon Studios is moving forward with an awards push for director Michael Grandage’s romantic drama “My Policeman,” despite mixed reviews out of the Toronto Film Festival, where it received an ensemble tribute. Variety has learned exclusively that Amazon will be submitting the entire cast, which includes music superstar Harry Styles and Emmy nominee Emma Corrin, all in the supporting categories for Oscar consideration.
Going between younger and older versions of the three main characters over a 40-year span, the British drama tells the story of Tom (Styles and Linus Roache), Marion (Corrin and Gina McKee) and Patrick (David Dawson and Rupert Everett) and how events from their past affect their future when reunited.
While awards strategists tend to commit “category fraud,” the act of submitting a lead performance in supporting categories for an easier pathway to a nom or win,...

On a break from his Madison Square Garden residency, and shortly after the Don’t Worry Darling Venice Film Festival world premiere, Harry Styles hit Toronto as his Amazon Studios Prime Video feature drama My Policeman made its world premiere to a great standing ovation Sunday at the Princess of Wales Theatre.
And there was no meme social-media spitting, or backstage drama; just all good vibes for My Policeman cast and director Michael Grandage. First stop was the Princess of Wales, where Emma Corin, David Dawson, Linus Roache, Styles and the filmmaker were among those taking the stage. Then they were whisked a few blocks away to the Fairmont Hotel to pick up their TIFF Tribute award for Best Performance (for the entire cast; see their acceptance speech below). Then they headed back for a Q&a at the Princess of Wales. And let’s not forget the press conference earlier in the day.

English novelist E.M. Forster never married, and why would he? The author of “Maurice” and “Howards End” was gay, reportedly maintaining relations with a much-younger police officer over the span of four decades. That man did marry, and history has it that his wife knew their secret. In “My Policeman,” this unconventional arrangement lends itself quite nicely to one of those slightly stuffy yet respectable period pieces of the kind that Ismail Merchant and James Ivory have made of Forster’s novels, jumping back and forth in time between the sexy stuff and the maudlin way it resolves itself so many years later.
It all starts with a special delivery to a dreary seaside cottage: An invalid arrives at the house of retired policeman Tom (Linus Roache) and his schoolteacher wife Marion (Gina McKee). It was her idea to take in the unpleasant and largely uncooperative Patrick Hazelwood, whose presence clearly annoys her husband.

Three movies into his film career, Harry Styles’ ability as an actor continues to improve with each of his outings. Beginning as a young soldier in Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” (2017), he returns to the silver screen with two films this year. In the first, he’s the charming husband to Florence Pugh in “Don’t Worry Darling,” with the press tour that keeps on giving. In the second, he portrays a closeted gay police officer in Michael Grandage’s drama “My Policeman” from Amazon Studios, featuring his strongest turn yet as an actor. But is an Oscar nomination in his future?

My Policeman, which had its world premiere today at the Toronto Film Festival, has its roots in a novel by Bethan Roberts which was actually based on a complicated love relationship between famed novelist E.M. Forster; his male lover of 40 years, a policeman named Bob Buckingham; and Buckingham’s wife May Hockey, who slowly came to realize her husband had a long-standing affair with Forster, but even after he had suffered a series of strokes took care of the author in his later life so deep was their friendship. Roberts changed the names and fictionalized it all for her book, which is now the basis of Ron Nyswaner’s (Philadelphia) screenplay that explores the love triangle of three freewheeling friends in 1957 who each was hobbled by the mores of the time, repressing rather than expressing their own sexuality, even as the...

Another red-hot star arrived at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday, as Harry Styles stopped by for the world premiere of his new drama, “My Policeman.” At a press conference early in the day, Styles said spoke about how he was able to get in the headspace of his character, the closeted policeman Tom.
“I think he’s very curious,” Styles said. “I think he’s someone who is born into a very small world and, if you’re born into that kind of environment, you feel like you know where the edge of the world is. Independent Entertainment, the finance, sales and production company behind films including “We Need to Talk About Kevin” and the upcoming “My Policeman,” which is set to have its world premiere at TIFF, celebrates its fifteenth anniversary this year.
Since its founding by CEO Luc Roeg in 2007, the film landscape has undergone unimaginable change, from the ascendance of streaming platforms to the global pandemic followed by a cost of living crisis that has brought cinemas to their knees.
Despite the challenges, Independent Entertainment has gone from strength to strength, adapting to market changes while remaining true to what Roeg describes as its “creative core.”
“Every decision is made around the creative basis and how the team or individuals are responding to it,” Roeg tells Variety of the company’s strategy. “I think we are very much a production-led business in the sense that whenever we get involved, even in third party projects,...

Harry Styles is arguably one of the most famous people in the world right now. Aside from dropping one of the best-selling albums of the year, the former One Direction member is getting himself back on the silver screen in a big way. Not only is he starring in Olivia Wilde's "Don't Worry, Darling" (which has certainly generated its fair share of conversation in recent weeks), but he is also front-and-center in "My Policeman."
Prime Video's adaptation of the book of the same name by Bethan Roberts is headed to theaters next month. And now, we've got a new trailer for the film, which sees Styles at the center of a forbidden love triangle in the '50s. One expects this will get people talking as well. Let's take a look, shall we?

A powerful story of forbidden love, regret, and living as your true self, “My Policeman” is the (reductively) “gay policeman movie starring Harry Styles” that you’ve likely been hearing about for months. Harry Styles will be baring it all in his upcoming film “My Policeman.”
The “As It Was” singer has a nude scene in the film and, up until now, it wasn’t clear just how much skin he’d be showing. In an interview on “The Howard Stern Show,” Styles clarified that it was his behind that will make it on screen.
“I wasn’t naked in ‘Don’t Worry Darling.’ I was naked in ‘My Policeman.’ There’s no peen in the final cut,” he said via Entertainment Tonight of his frontal nether region. “There’s bum bum… I don’t think the peen was intended to be involved. The peen, it was pre-negotiated that that would remain my own.”
Styles is still in the early days of his acting career, and both of his upcoming films involve intimate scenes. While chatting with Stern, he admitted that the scenes made him feel quite “vulnerable.

Harry Styles was briefly attached to Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu” remake before he dropped out of the project due to scheduling conflicts. The New Yorker first reported the casting exit. Contacted by Variety, a representative for Styles confirmed the news. Had Styles not pulled out of the movie, then “Nosferatu” would’ve paired the Grammy winner and “Dunkirk” actor with Anya Taylor-Joy.
Variety first reported in 2017 that “The Witch” and “The Lighthouse” director Robert Eggers was planning his own “Nosferatu” movie with Taylor-Joy, who collaborated with Eggers on their breakthrough indie “The Witch.” Taylor-Joy stars in Eggers’ upcoming Viking epic “The Northman,” in theaters April 22 from Focus Features. Production on “The Northman” got delayed by Covid in 2020, which is part of the reason the director’s “Nosferatu” plans have remained open-ended. Eggers confirmed earlier this year that he’s still in discussions with Taylor-Joy to do the movie, which will reimagine F.
