A couple months ago, it was announced that eight of the classic Universal Monsters movies – Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, The Bride of Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, Phantom of the Opera, and Creature from the Black Lagoon – would be receiving a limited edition 4K box set release. That box set was supposed to reach store shelves today, October 3rd… but you may have noticed that it’s not available, and Amazon stopped taking orders. That’s because the release of the box set has been delayed until February of 2024.
Our friends at Bloody Disgusting shared the following message from Universal: “Due to an unexpected packaging issue, the originally planned October 3, 2023 release of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s upcoming 4K collectible box set of the “Universal Classic Monsters Limited Edition Collection” is moving to February 13, 2024. We appreciate your patience and are very sorry for the inconvenience.”

With a full moon gracing us just in time for Halloween 2020, this critic decided to revisit one of the less-loved Universal Classic Monsters, Henry Hull’s titular beast in the flop curio Werewolf of London (1935). We’ll examine what was essentially a werewolf-infused reinterpretation of the Robert Louis Stevenson novel Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), and how Universal learned from its mistakes to create a trailblazing masterpiece six years later. Werewolf of London, ultimately, stands as an imperfect but intriguing early stab at reinterpreting classic werewolf mythology for a big screen presentation.
As our tale begins, famed obsessive botanist and neglectful husband Dr. Wilfred Glendon (Henry Hull) travels to Tibet to retrieve a rare flower, the “mariphasa lumina lupina,” a “phosphorescent wolf flower” that only blooms under moonlight. Though he succeeds in grabbing the plant he covets, he is also bitten by a wild werewolf in the process.

It’s difficult to imagine Ridley Scott’s sci-fi/horror classic “Alien” without the clear-minded, strong presence of Tom Skerritt as Dallas, the captain of the ill-fated Nostromo.
But originally, the actor turned down “Alien,” which celebrates its 40th anniversary on May 25, though he thought Dan O’Bannon’s script read well. “There was nobody involved at the time apparently,” said Skerritt. “I read it and thought, ‘it’s solid. It’s not a great script but it’s solid enough I can see it. But it was a $2 million budget! I thought, okay at 2 million bucks this might be an Ed Wood movie.”
As fate would have it, he went to see 1977’s “The Duelists,” for which Ridley Scott unanimously received the award for best first work at the Cannes Film Festival. “I was just blown over by ‘The Duelists,’” noted Skerritt.
“I thought, this is a masterpiece. It’s a painting.

Without a doubt, when I was looking through the schedule for the first day of Stan Lee’S Comikaze, “Vampires In Pop Culture And Myth” stood out as the must-see. This was due not only to my love of monsters, but also to a star-studded panel moderated by Buffy and Angel star Juliet Landau (Drusilla!), who was joined by the masterminds of Grimm, writers David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf (who also worked on Buffy and Angel), Mariana Klaveno of True Blood fame (Lorena to you), musician David J (from the bands Bauhaus, Love and Rockets), Gavin Hignight of FEARnet, and Georges Jeanty, the artist for Buffy Season 8, 9, and for the upcoming Firefly series.
The panel came together, in part, due to a feature length documentary in the works from Juliet Landau and Deverill Weekes, a project that will explore many of the themes and topics discussed in the panel. I...

Over this past weekend, hundreds of hungry (literally and figuratively) screenwriters arrived in Burbank, CA to pitch their life’s dream to studio execs. The event invites people far and wide to try to catch lightning in a bottle, that ephemeral feeling that everyone searches for, and rarely finds, in La. The Great American Pitchfest not only can open doors, but is massively educational, offering an opportunity to meet like minded writers and actors and directors who all want to do the same thing, and learn from the best in the process.
There were plenty of free classes and panels, of which we attended several. All of which were illuminating, inspiring, informative, and filled with influential writers and directors. There was also free cake. So yeah, go next year.

In celebration of the October 2nd Blu-ray release of the Universal Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection from Universal Studios Home Entertainment, veteran horror historian Scott Essman has prepared a truly monstrous trip back through time for you classic horror fans!
It’s a quiet dusty morning in the summer of 1916 and all but a small eastern region of the San Fernando Valley is largely undeveloped, to say nothing of unpopulated. For the past year, inside of an unassuming front gate just over the hill from Los Angeles proper, two men are trying to forge their path in the fledgling motion picture business: Lon Chaney and Jack Pierce. Nascent actors Chaney, 33, and Pierce, 27, were completely unknown, but each had an angle; they could both work magic out of a simple makeup case, fully transforming their faces and even parts of their bodies to put themselves into a better position to be cast in a role.

Stop-motion animator and filmmaker Ray Harryhausen’s achievements and influence are incalculable. Numerous giants in the world of cinema have cited his work, especially in The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad (1958), as the inspiration for their career in films. In addition to two other pioneering Sinbad films, Harryhausen developed effects for and produced the feature films 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957), Jason and the Argonauts (1963), Valley of Gwangi (1969), and many others from the early 1950s through the early 1980s. However, his body of work, including personal experiments to work as the key animator on the King Kong-influenced Mighty Joe Young, stretches to before World War II to his first film, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms in 1953.
Turning 90 this year, Harryhausen retired in 1981 after Clash of the Titans and lives in England. His journeys to his hometown of Los Angeles to meet with friends, colleagues and protégés might finally be at an end.

There are a million questions we have about Popeye, the sailor. We know that his nemesis was named Bluto when he was fat and Brutus when he was muscle bound -- but were they the same person? Then there's the oddly misshapen Olive Oyle - Anorexic or inspiration for Stephen King's Zelda from Pet Sematary? And how about Popeye himself? He spent a lot of time fighting off sea hags, sea monsters, and goons successfully thanks to his trusty can of spinach, but what if some of those supernatural beings rubbed off on him? What if everyone's favorite barrel-armed hero became a perversion of his former self?
Sometime DC contributor Scott Essman just wrote in with an image he came across that features the great Rick Baker's hellish take on the usually family friendly character. It's amazing what a few slight enhancements to the design can yield, no?...

WWII in HD - Blu-ray Review
Roger Ebert recently made people aware of a video on YouTube called The Open Road London.
The film was taken decades ago. The hustle and bustle of life in the city is enough to make you think that even after all technology has done for us we’re still as busy as ever. The Beefeater who just saunters in the frame, the double-decker busses, the police directing traffic by hand, it’s all very quaint. The amusing thing about this full color...

From 1980 to 1995 Rob Bottin was one of the most accomplished special makeup effects artists working in motion pictures. With groundbreaking work in films like The Howling, The Thing, Explorers, Robocop, Total Recall and Seven, he set new standards for the craft.
But after 1999 and Fight Club he dropped almost completely out of sight, with a scant few credits in the early part of the next decade and none since. Certainly, Bottin has left a legacy of great work that provides inspiration for film buffs and emerging artists alike. And now there’s only a vacant shop where his legendary Azusa studio used to be. The makeup and creature genius ran his operation out of an old public works building at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains, its own little magical cavern a freeway ride from the magic of Hollywood. From there he nurtured his distinctive design aesthetic,...

In the history of the modern American cinema, there are but few legacies of makeup artists. While the legendary Burman and Dawn names each include three generations of makeup artists, there is but one lasting family that features four working generations: the Westmores of Hollywood. With ties to virtually every studio in the annals cinema, the Westmores have created classic makeups in top contemporary film and TV shows back to the earliest years of silent film.
George Westmore, the patriarch of the Westmore clan at the turn of the century, worked as a wigmaker in his native England — where he was born in 1879 — and gave birth to sons Mont (born in 1902), twins Perc and Ern (born in 1904), Wally (born in 1906), and a daughter, Dorothy (born in 1907). The young family traveled to the U.S. to seek better opportunities and maintained a wig-making and beauty salon business which floated amongst various cities,...

The long-awaited release of Universal Studios’ 2010 version of The Wolfman conjures the history of the men who made the original horror films at the studio in the 1920s through the 1940s. Not only was the original 1941 film The Wolf Man key among them, but the rich history of the other films is directly tied into both why and how that film was created.
In 1928, after his father had appointed 21-year-old Carl Laemmle, Jr. as head of production at Universal Studios, the machinery was in place for a new wave of films based on classic horror stories. By 1931, the studio had both Dracula and Frankenstein as two of its greatest successes, and they followed those up with a few more early 1930s originals, including The Mummy and The Invisible Man.
By 1935, they had produced Werewolf of London, their first film based on the Loup-Garou stories from France...

When filmmakers Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez wrote and directed The Blair Witch Project, which debuted in theaters ten years ago this past summer, they ushered in a sub-genre of filmmaking that was part reliant on the power of suggestion, part pre-reality TV, and part old-fashioned exploitation fright film.
Certainly, Blair Witch was a phenomenon in 1999, coming right at the end of perhaps the most pioneering decade in American independent filmmaking, due at least somewhat to inventive Internet marketing, as the web had just recently blossomed at that time. In essence, the filmmakers took three unknown actors and went into the woods on the East Coast with a camcorder and digital audio tape deck and a rough outline of the various events. Due to their inexpensive basic production, ostensibly, much video footage was shot on location, with a coherent movie being cobbled together subsequently in post. But, inarguably, the sum...

Writer Scott Essman sent along a batch of behind-the-scenes photos of makeup FX artist Gino Crognale doing his thing for the recently released slasher flick Sorority Row (a couple also appear with our set-visit report in Fango #287), plus a pic of director Stewart Hendler instructing actress Rumer Willis. Needless to say, there are spoilers below regarding the death scenes for those who haven’t caught the movie yet, but if you have, or if you’re not concerned about such things, dig in!
Sorority Row, also starring Briana Evigan, Leah Pipes, Jamie Chung, Margo Harshman, Audrina Partridge and Carrie Fisher, is currently in release from Summit Entertainment; see our reviews here and here, and our two-part interview with Hendler here and here.

The votes are in (2,933 of them in fact), and the winners of the 7th annual Rondo Hatton Awards have been announced. Apparently the big upset this year came in the Best Model, Toy, or Collectible category, where "The Birds Barbie" beat out her competition. No surprise to me; she's been kicking butts and taking names since she first got into town! I certainly ordered mine the first chance I had.
And she's not the only member of her gender who stood out this year: Congrats to Jovanka Vuckovic and her co-writer Scott Gabbey of Rue Morgue, who were awarded Best Article for "Coffin Joe Resurrected," a look at the legendary Brazilian filmmaker Jose Mojica Marins. Editor-in-Chief Vuckovic has even more to be proud about as Rue also won for Best Magazine overall, Best Magazine Cover (#83, a portrait of Forrest J Ackerman by longtime Famous Monsters artist Basil Gogos), and Best...

Looking for a spooky getaway this coming fall? How about spending Halloween on a cruise to Mexico? Fango recently got word about Monster Classics’ MonsterSplash, a Royal Caribbean Cruise from October 29-November 2 that aims to give horror fans the perfect vacation they’re looking for.
“MonsterSplash started life simply as a way to create a new type of classic monster convention,” says Scott Essman of Visionary Media, one of the event’s creators. “We’ve all been to and stayed at hotels, so why not a cruise? The only real way to do it properly would be on Halloween weekend, and there just happened to be a cruise on the Radiance of the Seas ship leaving from San Diego on October 29 and returning the following Monday. It was too perfect!” The MonsterSplash festivities are scheduled to include cocktail parties, live monster art and artistry, ongoing classic creature-feature and rare documentary screenings,...
