Fans of the Netflix fantasy series The Witcher should be filled with glee right now. After all, the world's biggest streaming service has axed a lot of fantasy shows in the last few years, including well-received ones like Shadow & Bone and Warrior Nun.
But The Witcher proved too popular to purge, due in part to the massive star appeal of Henry Cavill as the lead character, monster hunter Geralt of Rivia. And while fans of other fantasy shows are mourning their cancellations, The Witcher has been confirmed for two more seasons.
But its fans are more nervous than excited.

In spite of his leading-man Hollywood cred, Henry Cavill is a self-proclaimed fantasy nerd. He campaigned hard for the role of Geralt and was open about his passion for the story. But creative differences soon caused friction on set, especially as the storyline of The Witcher...

It's finally happening: whether you've been waiting for the follow-up to Netflix's The Witcher or not, it's coming, and production is well underway. Without revealing any specific details, Netflix has already started actively promoting the upcoming fourth season.
Recently, the streaming service released a video of a table read that featured the first appearance of none other than the new Geralt of Rivia, Liam Hemsworth, who replaced Henry Cavill.
While many fans don't need lore-friendly explanations for the recasting, the writers seem to be banking on it, but it remains a mystery how exactly it will be accomplished. However, the new actors present at the table read may explain the transition from Cavill to Hemsworth.

"The Witcher" season 4 has a major challenge on its hands with the recasting of its main character. After three seasons in blond wigs and leather, Henry Cavill has departed the Continent and Liam Hemsworth ("The Hunger Games") will be taking over his role. "The Witcher" EP Tomek Bagiński has said that the change won't just be glossed over, promising "we have a very, very good plan to introduce our new Geralt" that is "very, very close to the meta ideas which are deeply embedded in the books."
Whatever the plan is, it seems that Netflix is satisfied with its execution -- at least enough to green light "The Witcher" season 5. The official account for the series on X (formerly known as Twitter) showed the cast assembling for a season 4 table read and announced a fifth and final season still to come. The mythology of Gods having once walked around the earth is not something that is new to our sensibilities. Countless films have used the idea and created a magical world with great protagonists and sometimes even greater villains. The new film Knights of the Zodiac, adapted from the manga series and directed by Tomasz Bagiński, does a decent job of building the mythological world with the iconic characters taken from the manga and adapting it to a live-action format.
The plot revolves around a poor kid named Seiya, who lives with her sister Patricia. Unbeknownst to him, he possesses a power known as ‘Cosmo,’ which initially becomes responsible for his sister being abducted but later might turn out to be the only way to help save the Goddess of War, Athena, who has reincarnated as a mortal named Sienna. Let’s take a look at the characters:

Fans of “The Witcher” are patiently awaiting the upcoming third season of the Netflix fantasy hit, in which star Henry Cavill will exit midway through the season, with his character, Geralt of Rivia, to then be played by Liam Hemsworth.
While TV series have occasionally brought in new actors to play characters, “The Witcher” is somewhat unique in that the switch will be taking place partway through a season.
However, the series’ producers are promising fans that the transition will be “flawless,” and will adhere to author Andrzej Sapkowski’s original novels.

Before shooting began on Bong Joon Ho’s Oscar-winning Parasite, the film’s production crew had trouble finding one of the film’s crucial locations: the luxurious home of the wealthy Park family. The chances of finding the right house were slim, but the chances of finding a two-story house with an ideal setting was even slimmer. As a result, the film’s art team created a set — a one-story house that would become the Park’s mansion and the film’s main setting.
Later, artists at Dexter Studios, a Seoul-based visual effects studio, added a second floor to the house using computer graphics based on its blueprints, complete with a staircase and a garden that was digitally created. The streets nearby also were made in 3D and digitally merged with the film. During the four months of preproduction, more than 200 artists at Dexter worked on the project and roughly...

Plot: When a goddess of war reincarnates in the body of a young girl, street orphan Seiya discovers that he is destined to protect her and save the world. But only if he can face his own past and become a Knight of the Zodiac.

For every Alita Battle Angel, there is a Ghost in the Shell, Dragon Ball Evolution, and Death Note. The cultural barrier aside, there has never been the right balance between ambition and execution. Sony’s Knights of the Zodiac is a valiant attempt to bring the Saint Seiya anime to life with a modest budget and recognizable actors just below the A-list. 2022 has been another big year for anime and manga in the United States. This fall's "Chainsaw Man" anime is earning rave reviews. "Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero" earned 32 million worldwide in its first week. Netflix's "Cyberpunk Edgerunners" convinced folks to give the messy "Cyberpunk 2077" another shot, rocketing the game up the Steam rankings. On the manga front, the blockbuster success of Junji Ito has led publishers to take chances on other horror artists like Kazuo Umezu and Kanako Inuki. There's even a fledgling indie manga movement in the United States, with small publishers like Glacier Bay Books and Star Fruit Books distributing titles that might never otherwise see the light of day. We're long past the time of executives chopping up anime series in the editing docket to be marketable to American children. Anime and manga are now respected in their own right, if only because it sells.

Originally expected to be a six episode series, The Witcher prequel The Witcher: Blood Origin will be “a four-part special event” when it reaches the Netflix streaming service on December 25th. Our own Alex Maidy already had the chance to watch the show, giving it an 8/10 review you can read Here – and in his review he said, “The limited four-episode run is just long enough to build up the characters without overstaying its welcome. In fact, I would have enjoyed more episodes or even another standalone mini-series focused on this era.” During a recent interview with Netflix, showrunner Declan de Barra said the idea to cut the show down from six episodes to four came up in the editing room so the show could have “optimum story flow”.
The showrunner said, “This felt like a two-part movie. You never want to be watching a movie going, ‘I love this movie.

“The Witcher” will return with a fourth season with Liam Hemsworth taking the reins as Geralt of Rivia, replacing Henry Cavill, Netflix announced on Saturday and both Cavill and Hemsworth sharing the news on their Instagram accounts.
“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,” Cavill said in a statement. “In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”

Netflix has renewed The Witcher for a fourth season with a twist.
Liam Hemsworth will replace Henry Cavill in the epic drama series, taking the reins as Geralt of Rivia.
The move comes ahead of the third season of the series, which will return in summer 2023. A four-part prequel series, The Witcher: Blood Origin launches December 25, 2022.
Cavill, who revealed earlier this week he will return in the role of Superman, played the grim Geralt of Rivia, the bane of supernatural beasties in the first three seasons of the drama series.
The Witcher is a story of the intertwined destinies of three individuals in the vast world of The Continent, where humans, elves, witchers, gnomes, and monsters battle to survive and thrive, and where good and evil is not easily identified.
It also stars Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan.

If you thought DreadXP’s The Mortuary Assistant getting a film adaptation was a no-brainer, then you might as well put Bloober Team’s The Medium getting a television adaptation in the same category. Yep, Bloober Team is teaming up with Platige Image to develop a TV series based on the game.
Tomasz Bagiński and Bloober Team’s Piotr Babieno will be overseeing the show. Bagiński is also executive producer on another adaptation of a video game franchise in The Witcher, which will see Season 3 arrive next year on Netflix.
“Both the film industry and the video game industry are close to my heart, and I am very happy that there is finally an opportunity to bring them both together,” says Babieno. “The story we told in the game was appreciated by players, and now more people will be able to hear about it. It was as early as 2010, as he likes to tell it, when Polish animator and visual artist Tomasz Bagiński lobbied his friend Andrzej Sapkowski to make a movie. Sapkowski is the author of “The Witcher” series of fantasy novels, and Bagiński — already Oscar-nominated for his short film “The Cathedral” — had dreams of taking the series to the big screen.
Among the project’s early boosters was Platige Image, the Polish animation, VFX and post-production studio that Bagiński joined in 2004. When Netflix swooped in to acquire the rights to “The Witcher” in 2017, the company was tapped to executive produce alongside L.A.-based Hivemind. The Polish studio also became one of several houses to handle special effects for the series, earning an Emmy nomination for its VFX work on what has gone on to become one of Netflix’s biggest international hits.

Netflix had announced that the prequel series The Witcher: Blood Origin, which is set in “an elven world” 1200 years before the events we saw in The Witcher, would have a six episode run. But now the Witcher fan site Redanian Intelligance reports that they’ve heard the show is being condensed from six episodes down to four.
Here’s the Redanian Intelligence report:
Keep in mind that the footage was already shot as six episodes, which likely means heavier editing and potentially lots of footage on the cutting room floor. To support that, we learned the writing credits for all of the Blood Origin episodes and they go like this:
Episode 1: Declan de Barra
Episode 2: Alex Meenehan/Aaron Stewart-Ahn
Episode 3: Tania Lotia/Kiersten Van Horne
Episode 4: Declan de Barra/Tasha Huo
We can’t claim to know all the ins and outs of how crediting works...

Fans at Comic-Con will Saturday get a fresh taste of Sony’s “Knights of the Zodiac,” a fantasy action film based on the popular Japanese “Saint Seiya” manga and anime series.
Tomek Baginski directs a diverse cast headed by Famke Janssen and Sean Bean, as well as American-born Japanese sensation Mackenyu in the title role as Pegasus Seiya.
For Toei Animation, the Japanese studio behind the properties, the effort is the result of a decade-long strategic overhaul. And putting together the 60 million first leg in a major movie franchise took a circuitous route through Hungary and Covid disruptions. Toei Animation international producer Ikezawa Yoshi explains the journey.
Variety: What was the corporate or strategic point of view that led Toei Animation to make the live action “Knights of the Zodiac”?
Ikezawa: Today when you run an animation studio, especially the size of those in the Japanese industry, profit potential is limited.

Andy Cheng has earned tremendous kudos as the fight choreographer of the bus scene in Marvel’s recent “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” The scene took nearly a year to plan and execute, and serves to demonstrate Simu Liu’s previously-hidden skills to an open-mouthed Awkwafina, and has since been released by Marvel as a standalone YouTube clip.
Cheng is now hard at work trying to shape the next Asian superhero as action director, stunt coordinator and fight choreographer on “Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya,” a live action adaptation of hit Japanese animated property “Saint Seiya.” The film wrapped up shooting last week in Budapest, Hungary.
“We don’t have the same amount of time or available budget as on ‘Shang Chi.’ But the goal is absolutely the same,” Cheng told Variety. “To craft something very unique that is rooted in Asian culture and has universal appeal.

Creator Lauren Hissrich and stars Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan talk bringing The Witcher series to life as the next big fantasy series.
Lauren Hissrich was about to step on a plane when she discovered The Witcher had gotten the greenlight from Netflix. A writer and producer with credits that include Daredevil and The Umbrella Academy, Hissrich had successfully pitched a fresh take to Netflix for adapting Andrzej Sapkowski’s beloved fantasy novels for the small screen, but still didn’t even know for sure if she had a show until boarding an aircraft headed toward Poland. There she would be in Sapkowski’s homeland and the well from which his popular books (and the video games they also inspired) sprang. It was also there her first steps at building the next big fantasy series would begin.

Thanks to the huge success of The Witcher 3, it was inevitable that Hollywood would come calling sooner rather than later, and we now know that a movie is in the works for 2017.
There’s plenty of potential in a Witcher movie. For a start, the games are based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s much-loved novels, which should offer filmmakers a rich archive of source material to draw on beyond what’s contained in the games. Secondly, the games have provided a great stylistic template for the world. Filmmakers don’t need to improvise or look to that awful Polish Witcher (sorry, ‘Hexer’) TV show for inspiration about the tone of the world, because the games nailed it so well.
Looking at the production so far, there are quite a few unknowns and question marks. Feature film debutant Tomek Baginski is expected to direct (check out his Oscar-nominated short,...

During the American Film Festival in Wroclaw Poland in November, I met someone at a party. The Polish parties, at least at the American Film Festival, are always very friendly. The American Film Festival and U.S. in Progress late night party is held in the same venue every night with free drinks. Later in the night all those still standing go to a Soviet-style diner and eat the best pierogis I have ever had in my life.
After attending this festival every year since 2008, you would think I knew everyone, but in fact, I often stay by those I know or don’t go to such late high energy parties. However, one night I did go and at the bar, I met a woman named Anna Różalska who looked so familiar that I was sure she was an American I knew from home.
And as we talked, as if we had known each other for all our lives, I realized that even though she was not American, she would fit perfectly among my colleagues in “Hollywood” should she ever decide to give it a try.
Anna was heading the production and development department at Alvernia Studios where she coproduced the Golden Globe nominated “Arbitrage” directed by Nick Jarecki (USA, 2012) starring Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon, the film that Roadside Attractions did so well with on VoD as well as theatrically. She coproduced “Vamps” by Amy Heckerling (USA, 2012) starring Sigourney Weaver. Later Anna exec produced “Sweet Home” (Spain, 2014) produced by Filmax and a short movie “ Ambition” directed by Oscar Nominee Tomek Baginski and starring Aidan Gillen from the “Game of Thrones” for Platige Image and I Exec.
Over the years Anna has built strong relationshops with major Polish producers, TV stations and filmmakers both in Poland and internationally. In 2015 she co-founded Match&Spark Management, a talent management company representing and promoting directors, DOPs and music composers in Poland and outside of the country. The idea is to match filmmakers who have been working in commercials, television and film to broader relationships in the areas they want to develop.
M&S aims to help find Polish talent representation in other markets such as U.S., U.K., France, etc. and to manage them by building long term relationships with other international agents and managers.
M&S also represents Polish talents based outside of Poland in the local markets. Lucas Zal (Oscar-nominee for cinematography on “Ida” by director Pawel Pawlikowski) is one of the most notable clients of M&S.
M&S aims to package the projects in Poland and in the European market using the models of the largest agencies and management companies in Hollywood.
Currently M&S is in post-production on its first U.S. coproduction, a documentary with RatPac, “In The Name Of Honor”, directed by Pawel Gula. More local and international projects, both films and television series are in the pipeline.
Anna graduated from Warsaw Business School, went on to the Polish National Film, Theatre and TV School in Lodz and received her Cems Masters Degree in International Management (Esade / Barcelona). She also had a scholarship to attend Haute Ecole de Commerce in Montreal.
She speaks English, Spanish, French and Polish.

Poland is very U.S.-friendly and has liberal film laws favoring coproductions. We have recently seen two of their films at Sundance, Anne Fontaine's "Agnus Dei" in the Premieres section, a French-Polish coproduction being sold internationally by Films Distribution and the 100% original Polish mermaid vampire lesbian musical, "The Lure" directed by Agnieszka Smoczynska in the World Cinema Section.
Annashe is fluent in English, Spanish, French and Polish and is in a perfect position to bridge future developments between the two countries and other countries as well.

From Assassin’s Creed to The Witcher, via Mass Effect, Minecraft and maybe more Warcraft...
Latest update: Uncharted delayed.
In the years since Den Of Geek first sprung into existence, we’ve consistently kept an eye on the videogames that have been touted for the big screen treatment. We’ve tried to list them all in a big article a few times before, and it feels like the time has come to pull a new version together.
If we haven’t heard anything about a certain videogame movie in two years or more, it seems safe to assume that it’s quietly been binned. That’s why you won’t find the likes of BioShock, Devil May Cry, Far Cry, Gears Of War, Halo, Heavy Rain and Rollercoaster Tycoon on this list. If we get proven wrong on any of those, we’ll update this article as more information comes to light.

The Sean Daniel Company and Platige Films have announced plans for a film adaptation of "The Witcher," the Andrzej Sapkowski fictional work which inspired the popular and acclaimed video game series of the same name.
Oscar-nominated Tomasz Baginski ("The Cathedral"), who directed the opening cinematics for the first two games in the series, will helm the film based on a script by Thania St. John ("Grimm," "Chicago Fire") .
Specifically the story will be based on the short stories "The Witcher" and "Lesser Evil" from "The Last Wish" collection and will also serve as an introduction to Geralt the witcher, a nomadic monster hunter for hire.

The Witcher videogames are the latest to make the leap to the big screen...
One of the finest videogames of the year is the latest to try and do the jump to the movies. The Witcher 3 has been signed up for the film treatment by The Sean Daniel Company (the firm that’s behind the upcoming Ben Hur remake) and Platige Films. Or more to the point, The Witcher series as a whole is to make the transfer.
What’s more, the first movie of The Witcher already has a director attached. Tomasz Baginski, who helmed The Cathedral, and more crucially directed the opening cinematic scenes for the first games in the series, is taking charge. The idea is that this will springboard a movie series too.
The Witcher is set to land in cinemas in 2017, although casting at this stage hasn’t been announced.

For the scope and scale of CD Projekt Red’s recently-released RPG masterclass Wild Hunt, there’s still plenty of lore buried within The Witcher IP, which itself links back to the adorned fantasy novels penned by Polish scribe Andrzej Sapkowski. It’s a resource-rich pool of all of the double-crossing bandits and powerful dynasties that the genre is celebrated for, and The Sean Daniel Company – production house behind The Mummy and Paramount’s Ben-Hur remake – is keen to mine that source material with a live-action adaptation of Sapkowski’s sprawling series.
News comes by way of an official press release from Sdc, with a tentative release date now in place for 2017. Remaining true to the roots of the property itself, the studio is primed to work in tandem with Polish production company Platige Films on the video-game-to-movie project, who has referenced HBO’s Game of Thrones as a model for success.

The Isa of the Day segment of SydneysBuzz resumes for the Cannes Film Festival 2015. ISAs, or International Sales Agents, help to bring films into global distribution by selling distribution rights to distributors worldwide. Topics include new trends in distribution and sales, inspirational success stories, film slates and more. A worthy read for any serious filmmaker looking to have a better understanding of the chain of business between producing a film and sharing it with the world.
Based in Warsaw and founded by Jan Naszewski in 2010, New Europe Film Sales sells both short and feature films to the world market and to all major platforms: theatrical, TV, VOD and various internet platforms.
New Europe Film Sales is a leader in the short film market, and works with new talents and seasoned directors alike, including Ruben Östlund, Tomek Baginski and Jonas Odell. Six of New Europe’s short films have been shortlisted for the Oscars, and awarded by prestigious festivals such as Berlinale, Locarno, Sundance, Oberhausen and Rotterdam.
Seven of New Europe’s 18 feature films have had international premieres at the Berlinale, and have opened in Cannes, Rotterdam, Karlovy Vary, Toronto & Tribeca.
Founder Jan Naszewski shares more:
I studied and worked in the UK for a couple years after growing up in Poland. There I worked for a company that did short film distribution, but acquired so many films. That wasn’t my style. I like the small boutique approach where you can be very selective and build a brand for your film. That’s why in 2010, I set up my own company in Poland, and it’s really paid off. We work internationally, even though we are based in Warsaw.
Initially, this was just a short films sales company, but the idea from the very beginning was to focus on quality over quantity. We’re a four person operation.
We pick up 10-15 short films a year, and our aim is to work up to having five to seven feature films a year. We want to have enough time to work with all the films, meet the filmmakers and producers, and don’t want them to be lost in a big slate. That allows us to be much more focused and selective because in the end, I believe you can always sell the quality films.
The market is changing as well, so it’s really a different situation these days. Films that sold ten years ago don’t really work anymore in that sense, so this policy has really paid off for us.
We still deal with short films sales, and that’s been really successful for us because in five years, we’ve had seven Oscar short-listers. Every year, we have somebody going to the Oscars, and we’ve had nominations and presence at the other big film festivals, which has been a good learning experience for us. Through that, we have access to really good producers and talent. We’re happy to work with these people, and not for the dollar bills in sight.
My background is actually with festivals. I had been working for different festivals in different capacities, and with that network, it’s easier to enter the film sales world. We are still the only sales agents based in Poland, and I can’t think of any companies based east of Berlin, so that gives us an edge.
For us, it’s always important that we work with international content and we don’t just handle Polish films. We work with independent films from the Us, Norway, and Denmark. We’ve always been very keen on working with first-time filmmakers and directors, and giving them a leg up into the market. We like edgy films. We like working with children’s films, and animation is something we are really interested in.
We have a feature film from Iceland in the Cannes official selection this year. It’s called “Rams”, by Grímur Hákonarson, about two old men who are brothers in the middle of nowhere in Iceland. They are both sheepherders, and haven’t spoken for forty years. Some of the sheep get a disease, and all the sheep in the valley have to be killed. In order to protect the sheep, they have to reconcile in order to save what’s really important to them. It’s a touching drama.

Before he was Head of Marketing for The Witcher and The Witcher 2 developer CD Projeckt Red, Michal Platkow-Gilewski was a fan of the the dark fantasy novels on which they were based back in his native Poland. So were many of the designers and programmers at his studio, he explained, saying many of them grew up reading Andrzej Sapkowski's dark fantasy novels about Geralt of Rivia, the titular "Witcher" or specially-bred monster hunter who was front and center for the CD Projekt's two award-winning games based on the books.

Deadline Hollywood: Nikki Finke says that her sources at Disney and its rival studios both believe that “Tangled,” Disney’s 50th animated motion picture, had a huge opening day yesterday and will greatly exceed most box-office projections for the 5-day holiday weekend. Analysts had forecasted a cumulative take of $35-$40 million, but a Disney competitor said that early data shows that the number will be “much bigger than expected,” and sources at Disney believe that it will wind up in the high $60s when all is said and done on Sunday.
