Prince Harry doesn’t play his beloved sport of rugby any longer due to a series of injuries — but he says that doesn’t stop him from feeling like an eager puppy when he’s around the sport.
“I’m like a Labrador with a tennis ball,” Harry told players on Friday. “As soon as I see a rugby ball…”
The royal, 33, attended a training session on Friday to watch the England rugby team prepare for their Six Nations match against Scotland, set for Feb. 24. There, he said the values of teamwork and discipline learnt in rugby are applicable to anyone’s life,...

In 2003 the England won the Rugby Union World Cup, capping years of development that transformed the sport from amateur pursuit to a game dominated by honed professionals. Documentary-maker James Erskine uncovers the human stories behind the rejuvenation of English rugby that led to World Cup victory
The latest sports doc from the industrious James Erskine zeroes in on that mid-90s moment when English rugby union was converted from hidebound amateur pursuit to the better organised proposition that carried home the 2003 World Cup.
Again, Erskine’s broadly conventional method involves informed talking heads casting light on carefully sourced archive: bluff warrior Martin Johnson represents the old school, pensive Jonny Wilkinson the new wave. Yet he’s becoming more adept at juggling the micro (analysis of coach Clive Woodward’s myriad one-yard gains) with the macro (discussing the mixed bag of Murdoch money) and retains his knack for uncovering the human stories behind these gamechangers: Johnson’s excitement at receiving a free mobile from sponsors soon subsided when he realised nobody else had one to call.

If rugby is ever mentioned in London, let's just assume Prince Harry is involved! It certainly was the case Wednesday morning when the royal family member helped launch the Rugby World Cup trophy tour across the U.K. and Ireland. With exactly 100 days until the tournament kicks off, fellow players Jonny Wilkinson and Will Greenwood joined the prince at Twickenham Stadium to kick off the cup's journey. "Rugby is a game built on values—respect, pride, team work and discipline. In 100 days' time, England and Cardiff will play host to an incredible festival of rugby with the world's best players, the world's best teams and of course the world's greatest fans demonstrating...

No less than a week ago, English actor George MacKay walked away from the Scottish BAFTAs with the Best Actor award to his name, for his spine-chilling performance in For Those In Peril. He now returns in something a little more light-hearted, in Simon Sprackling’s Breakfast with Jonny Wilkinson – and we had the pleasure of speaking to the gifted young actor.
Based on Chris England’s stage play, Breakfast with Jonny Wilkinson takes place on the morning England were victorious in the Rugby World Cup final, beating Australia narrowly. MacKay recalls his own memories of the day, who his own sporting idols are – and he also discusses his future, and whether Hollywood may be on the cards…
Well I’ll start by saying congratulations on the BAFTA, you must have been thrilled?

There's an engaging daftness about Simon Sprackling's adaptation of Chris England's 2003 rugby World Cup final yarn
Maybe you need to be a rugby fan to enjoy this film fully, but there's a cheerful, good-natured daftness here that anyone can understand. It is directed by Simon Sprackling and scripted by Chris England – a variation on a theme England established in 1991 with the stage play he co-wrote with Arthur Smith, An Evening With Gary Lineker. But that Italia 90-themed football drama had an obvious pall of sadness. This is something different. A ragtag bunch of fans show up at their local rugby club at breakfast-time on 22 November 2003 to watch the nailbiting World Cup final between England and Australia on the clubhouse TV. Among those present is Jake (George MacKay), a talented young amateur player who is convinced he has a supernatural power to help Jonny Wilkinson's kicking. Whenever Wilkinson...

The day that Simon Sprackling’s comedy feature Breakfast with Jonny Wilkinson is released across Britain, is ten years to the day that the England rugby team were gloriously crowned champions of the world, beating Australia in a tense and exhilarating World Cup final. It’s naturally a pleasure to see a film built around such a memorable sporting triumph in recent history, capturing the range of emotions that inevitably come with such an occasion. However from the moment we hear Sam Cooke’s melodious rendition of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot at the beginning of this title, unlike the match this is based upon, the film proceeds to head steadily downhill from there on.
Set at Greyhawks Rugby Club on this fateful day in 2003, Breakfast with Jonny Wilkinson – based on screenwriter Chris England’s original stage play – focuses on a collection of loyal members potentially losing their base to land developers.

The legend that Aussies of 2003 still have nightmares about, now retired from the international game but still going in the south of France. The Premiership takes a week off this week to let the knock out stages of both European Cup competitions take place. The Football Fan’s A-z Guide to Rugby Union
American founding father Benjamin Franklin in 1789 said: “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes”. It’s a sentiment that is hard to argue with, but is clearly not quite complete.
Benjamin Franklin was a few years too early to experience that awkward moment in the middle of every rugby game when the referee makes a decision that no one understands except, (and not always), him.
The offside rule in football has long being the discussion of terraces and dinner tables and was recently immortalised on a new 50p coin. But we rugby aficionados scoff at such confusion over one law. Over in rugby land we have a multitude of laws to be confused at and scratch our heads over. Our ‘throw ins’ have 92 laws alone! That’s why every Six Nations the good people...

It is absurd to imply, as David Cameron has, that hearty commercial films are starved of cash by arthouse conspirators
They say that in politics, if you're in a hole, you should stop digging. And yet there's something about the subject of British cinema that gets the prime minister repeatedly reaching for his spade. Perhaps it's something to do with Meryl Streep's Maggie gazing down from every bus, and maybe that film's sentimentalisation of a Tory leader has emboldened David Cameron to believe this is solid ground for him. He will keep on making these eye-catching and brazen announcements about British film – a topic on which, as Clement Attlee once said to Harold Laski, a period of silence on his part would be most welcome.
On Radio 4's Today programme, Evan Davis cheekily asked him to comment on a listener's view that in a Cameron biopic, Malcolm McDowell should...

Headline writers found their jobs made easier yet again today as it was revealed Manu Tuilagi, the England centre, had been fined Nz$10,000 for wearing a sponsored mouth guard, contravening the International Rugby Board’s (Irb) strict Rugby World Cup terms on participation, which are designed to protect official tournament sponsors.
Although in itself not a huge issue, it is the latest in an increasingly long line of events that have occurred in New Zealand that have seen England featuring on the front pages, rather than just the back.
Manu has professed his innocence in what could have been a genuine mistake. But the fact his brother Alesana, currently part of the Samoa squad, was also sanctioned for the same offence last week could lead to a few eyebrows being raised. And when it comes to eyebrows, Martin Johnson fends off all-comers.
So what is going on with England? Well...

With seven changes to the team that beat Georgia 41-10 last Sunday, all the headlines were on Hrh Mike Tindall, who has been targeted by the media following the release of CCTV footage of him talking to a woman. The fact nothing of note actually happened has been overlooked by the papers, and it’s not something I would expect to affect Tindall’s performance as he replaces Shontayne Hape. Martin Johnson is clever enough not to take the risk if he even thought there was a chance. And who would argue with Johnno? Anyone? Exactly…

Manu Tuilagi is given another chance to find his feet at the top level at outside centre, and Jonny Wilkinson slots back in to fly-half after an encouraging performance last week from Toby Flood.

The Royal family celebrated yet another wedding this year as the Queen's granddaughter Zara Phillips walked down the aisle on Saturday, July 30 afternoon in the historic Edinburgh. The ceremony took place in a small Church of Scotland called Canogate Kirk where the Queen worships when she's in town.
Phillips married the captain of England's rugby team, Mike Tindall, in an ivory silk and satin gown designed by the Queen's personal couturier, Stewart Parvin. Carrying a cream-colored hand bouquet, she finished the look with a Jimmy Choo shoes, a cathedral-length veil and a tiara owned by Princess Anne. Meanwhile, the groom wore a coattail suit with gray stripes on the trousers.
Guests, including newlywed Prince William and Kate Middleton, arrived at the venue at 1 P.M. and the bride arrived six minutes later than the scheduled entry at 3 P.M. She hired the student chorus from her private school she attended to sing at the ceremony.

Greetings sports fans! 2010 was truly a great year for athlete beefcake, or Sportscake™ as we like to call it around here. Not only were there major international events to cover like The Winter Olympics, The World Cup and The Commonwealth Games, but we also finally had some very fetching out gay male athletes to celebrate and cheer on. Rugby player Gareth Thomas, diver Matthew Mitcham, and speed skater Blake Skjellerup all pictured above astounded us with their athletic prowess – not to mention their aesthetic appeal! How great is it that they also play for our team?
In this end of year compendium, we present highlights from our 2010 sports coverage.
Things kicked off in February in Vancouver with our Men of the Winter Olympics.
We were particularly taken with skeleton competitor Patrick Shannon of Ireland (pictured below left), but there were a number of handsome athletes in Vancouver. If you're a...

Last week's battle of the rugby studs was fought to the death, but Jonny Wilkinson managed to top Gavin Henson in the end, scoring 48 votes to his rival's 45. Poor Chazza will be dishing out lots of tea and sympathy tonight, we'd imagine. Anyway, this week's Face Off is a battle between two tanned, toned hunks who get us all hot and bothered every day at teatime. That's right, they're Aussie soap stars!

Hayden Christensen came from behind to win last week's battle of the Hollywood hotties, polling 60 votes to James Franco's 41. LONDON -- U.K. commercial network ITV on Monday celebrated England's triumph over the weekend in the Rugby World Cup in Sydney, boasting a near-record peak audience of 14.5 million people for the 9 a.m. Saturday local time broadcast. England's success-starved sports fans helped ITV to a peak share of 82% of the U.K. audience as team hero Jonny Wilkinson kicked a spectacular last-minute drop goal to secure victory in extra time. The match also helped Australia's Seven Network record the highest-rated program of the year there. Just more than 4 million Australian households out of nearly 7 million watched the nail-biting finale to a tournament attended by some 1.8 million people from all over the world. The previous highest-rated program for the year in Australia was last week's Network Ten airing of Australian Idol -- The Final Verdict, with 3.3 million homes. The rugby final combined with other rugby-related programs to give Seven a ratings-week win, its only one this year. For ITV, the ratings success is vindication for paying about £40 million ($67.9 million) for the rights to this year's and the 2007 Rugby World Cup tournaments.
