- She was born and brought up in Plaistow, London, the child of Trevor and Carol Ewen. Her mother is Jamaican while her father is of Italian descent and was raised in Scotland. Trevor is blind and partially deaf, while Carol is partially blind. Because of her parents' disabilities, Ewen is a caregiver to both of her parents as well as her two younger siblings, Shereen and Kiel.
- In 2009, she replaced Keisha Buchanan in the band Sugababes. Ewe signed on without knowing which member she would replace and originally thought she would replace Amelle. Buchanan was the last founding member of the group. Ewen was originally pursuing a solo career following her successful turn in The Eurovision Song Contest (2009). She was signed with Polydor Records and had released the single "My Man", written by Ina Wroldsen, but further promotional push of the single was scrapped when she joined Sugababes. The band dismantled in 2011 and the original band-members reclaimed the name in 2019.
