First, the good stuff: casting comedic gems like Dan Stevens, Isla Fisher, and Leslie Mann in a screwball Noel Coward adaptation is an inspired idea. Now this is a trio of game performers who always seem keenly aware of what sort of film they’re in and how to best elevate it. The problem, of course, is how to elevate a film that happens to be, well, just sort of bad. Edward Hall’s “Blithe Spirit” isn’t terribly ill-conceived, a slightly modernized version of the classic Noel Coward play — which has already been adapted for the screen by everyone from David Lean to Coward himself — with a wonderful cast and dazzling period details, that still manages to fall short of even limited expectations.
Based on Coward’s still-popular 1941 stage play, this “Blithe Spirit” has been the victim of an awkward update from screenwriters Piers Ashworth and Nick Moorcroft, who...

Charles Condomine (Dan Stevens) is plagued by writer’s block—so much so that his wife Ruth (Isla Fisher) talked her film producer father (Simon Kunz’s Henry Mackintosh) into paying him to adapt his best-selling detective novel debut into a screenplay. The hope is that an easy task without the need for new ideas will get the creative (and sexual) juices flowing again so that they can push their beds together and maybe even cross the Atlantic to Hollywood. No matter how supportive Ruth has been, however, Charles still can’t muster more than an all-caps “Help” upon the page before losing himself to another temper tantrum. If only his muse was by his side: the first Mrs. Condomine (Leslie Mann’s Elvira), who tragically died seven years prior.
C’est la vie, right? They’ll just have to push through instead: Charles banging his head against his typewriter...

“You’ve been commissioned to write a 90-page screenplay, not ‘War and Peace.'” With these airy words, in the opening minutes of “Blithe Spirit,” exasperated trophy wife Ruth (Isla Fisher) admonishes her first-time screenwriter husband Charles (Dan Stevens) as he twitchily battles writers’ block. Then she adds a kicker: “How can it be so difficult to adapt a story you’ve already written?” If her frustration with the whiny, self-absorbed Charles is hardly misplaced, her assumptions about screenwriting are nonetheless off-base. Penning a good, short, pithy screenplay is no easy feat, even when working from solidly proven source material — and one need look no further than “Blithe Spirit,” a tin-eared, lumpen-footed, almost perversely unfunny new spin on Noël Coward’s breezy 1940s farce, for proof.

The uplifting story of 100-year-old British hero Captain Tom Moore, who kept a nation in lockdown inspired, is being turned into a feature film, fast-tracked for production in 2021.
The U.K.’s Fred Films and Powder Keg Pictures won a bidding war for the life rights to the former British Army captain and World War II hero, who raised £38.9 million ($49.4 million) for the U.K.’s National Health Service by walking laps around his garden in the run-up to his 100th birthday during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Crime Time: Scalpello Skirts the Underbelly in Generic, Capable Thriller
We’ve reached a point where something like The Corrupted, the latest offering from Britain’s Ron Scalpello, a violent and narratively convincing showcase of considerably nefarious designs of colluding cops and criminals, has come to seem a bit old-fashioned. Ably performed by a cast of some formidably notable talent joined by contemporary stars, there’s nothing essentially wrong with Scalpello’s latest, curiously written by Nick Moorcroft (best known for his St. Trinian’s comedies a decade or so prior). And yet, there’s nothing to make this remarkably compelling or eventually memorable in the mind’s eye, which may explain why it’s taken so long for the title to travel stateside, only to be unceremoniously plopped into an early January limited release.…...

But there's little hope to be found for the recently released Liam McDonagh (Sam Claflin); a talented boxer put away for arme...

Exclusive: Leslie Mann is set to star as Elvira in Blithe Spirit, the adaptation of the 1941 Noel Coward play that already had Dan Stevens, Isla Fisher and Judi Dench set to star, and Ed Hall to direct the script by Nick Moorcroft, Meg Leonard and Piers Ashworth.
The new film re-imagines the Coward play, as a writer of bestselling crime novels invites an eccentric mystic to his home in hopes of curing a terrible case of writer’s block he encounters as he tries to finish his first screenplay. That block isn’t helped much when the mystic contacts the spirit of his first wife. David Lean directed the first film adaptation of the play in 1945.
Producers are Fisherman’s Friends trio James Spring, Leonard, and Moorcroft, alongside Hilary Bevan Jones, Peter Snell and Tuni Pinnolis. The project is a Fred Films and Powder Keg Pictures production in association with British Lion Films.

Film project is based on an unpublished memoir written by Roots.
Fred Films and Powder Keg Pictures, the producers behind recent UK box office hit Fisherman’s Friends, are working on a feature about Jamaica-born musician, chef and businessman Levi Roots.
Roots emigrated to London at the age of 11, unable to read or write, and went on to become a successful Reggae artist until his music career was cut short after he was sentenced to nine years in prison for drug offences.
While serving his time, Roots came up with the idea for creating ’Reggae Reggae Sauce’, inspired by his Grandmother’s Caribbean cooking.

Film will show journey from poverty in Jamaica to appearing on Dragons’ Den and building Caribbean food empire
He found fame and fortune after appearing on the small screen and securing an investment for his Reggae Reggae sauce on Dragons’ Den, but now Levi Roots has inspired leading British film-makers to tell his extraordinary story on the big screen.
Meg Leonard and Nick Moorcroft, writer-producers of some of the UK’s most successful independent films, are planning a film for cinematic release to tell Roots’ story: how he went from a child in Jamaica who was too poor to buy shoes and could not read and write when he emigrated to Britain aged 11, was later sentenced to nine years in prison for drugs offences, to turning his life around, and building a Caribbean food and drink empire worth £35m following his appearance on Dragons’ Den.

Sam Claflin stars in a striking-looking film set in east London, but it’s all sold short by ropey storytelling and dodgy dialogue
Slipped into cinemas on the quiet, without an official press screening, Ron Scalpello’s starry, busy British crime drama proves to be a semi-entertaining mixed bags. It has a measure of ambition, strong dramatic scenes and grabby performances, not least from Timothy Spall as a property magnate looming over east London like some doubly malevolent reincarnation of Bob Hoskins’ Harold Shand from The Long Good Friday. Yet the storytelling connecting its disparate elements starts to feel dashed-off, as if somebody involved couldn’t wait for it to occupy the 10pm slot on London Live that may be its destiny. This approach short-sells both cinematographer Richard Mott’s striking framing of the capital’s moneyed hotspots and the spiky idea at the heart of Nick Moorcroft’s script:...

MaryAnn’s quick take… A tart, sharp, life-affirming dramedy, one that is slightly more edgy and far less predictable than it probably has any right to be. Celia Imrie and Imelda Staunton are magnificent. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

Roadside Attractions/Stage 6, meanwhile, are bringing to this side of the Atlantic the Brit comedy Finding Your Feet with Timothy Spall, Loanna Lumley and Imelda Staunton, set for more than a dozen runs in its opening weekend before expanding to about 500 locations in April. A feel-good British comedy in the vein of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, the new film Finding Your Feet finds its own feet by presenting light and engaging fare employing veteran English actors in ways we rarely get to see them on the big screen. As I say in my video review (click the link above to watch), in these dark times this is the kind of hopeful, mature entertainment that just might drag older adult audiences out to the movies.
Exotic Marigold Hotel and its 2015 sequel proved there was a sizable worldwide crowd out there craving this kind of thing, and though it breaks no new ground, this Richard Loncraine-directed piece fits the bill nicely and gives the wondrous Imelda Staunton a lovely leading role in which she proves again her mettle as one of our best.
