Billy Eichner is finally getting to live out his childhood dream of a being in a major stage musical.
The “Bros” star is making his Hollywood Bowl singing debut this weekend during “The Lion King’s” 30th anniversary live-to-film concert.
“We just had our first official rehearsal all together this morning,” Eichner told me Wednesday afternoon. “The scope and size of it really knocked me out. If I can get through it, I think it’s going to be really fun.”
Eichner, who played Timon in the 2019 “Lion King” remake and reprises the role in the upcoming prequel film “Mufasa: The Lion King,” isn’t allowed to say what he’ll be performing. But it has already been announced that the two-night run — May 24 and 25 — will also feature “Lion King” veterans Nathan Lane, Jeremy Irons, Ernie Sabella, Heather Headley, Lebo M and Jason Weaver, as well as Egot winner Jennifer Hudson,...

The Lion King – Featuring the voices of Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala and Donald Glover as Simba, Disney’s “The Lion King” is directed by Jon Favreau. © 2019 Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved. When Disney made the original animated version of The Lion King, the studio invested heavily in the film’s music, enlisting Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice for the film’s original songs and Hans Zimmer for its score. Of course, it was an investment that paid off handsomely — the soundtrack album has sold more than 7 million copies, and all four of The Lion King’s Oscar nominations were for the film’s music. When the studio decided to remake the film in 2019, director Jon Favreau was faced with a lot of choices about how he wanted to make his film different than the original. At the time of the film’s release, Favreau told us he realized that,...

Disney recently dropped the trailer for the upcoming CGI’ Mufasa: The Lion King’ film and was met with a lot of comments and downvotes. The trailer was being ratioed hard with far more downvotes to upvotes. So what did Disney do? They labeled the video “for kids” and got the comments turned off.
Many people don’t love what they see. Many argue that the film feels like a direct replay of the original animated “Lion King” film.
Many more are tired of the “soulless remakes” that Disney keeps cranking out.
This criticism even prompted the director Barry Jenkins to respond to someone on X, saying that the original “Lion King” film was not soulless but a “potent vessel for communal empathy.”
People aren’t arguing that the original is “soulless” but that this new film seems like a repeat of the CGI film that many felt lacked the soul of the original.

Barry Jenkins is defending himself over criticism for helming the Disney prequel Mufasa: The Lion King.
After the trailer for The Lion King prequel dropped, fans of the Moonlight director took shots at him over his involvement with the film.
One social media user on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, said Jenkins was “too good and talented for this Iger’s soulless machine.”
“There is nothing soulless about The Lion King,” Jenkins replied. “For decades children have sat in theaters all over the world experiencing collective grief for the first time, engaging Shakespeare for the first time, across aisles in myriad languages. A most potent vessel for communal empathy.”

Barry Jenkins, the director behind movies such as Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk, may not have seemed like the obvious choice to helm Mufasa: The Lion King, but he’s not about to let people accuse him of selling out.

This prompted some to say that the director is “too good and talented for [Bob] Iger’s soulless machine,” but Jenkins was quick to defend himself. “There is nothing soulless about The Lion King,” Jenkins wrote on X. “For decades children have sat in theaters all over the world experiencing collective grief for the first time, engaging Shakespeare for the first time, across aisles in myriad languages. Barry Jenkins isn’t necessarily feeling the love from every social media commenter over his involvement in Mufasa: The Lion King after the Disney prequel released its first trailer this week.
After screening footage at CinemaCon earlier this month, the film’s trailer was released online Monday and features narration from Rafiki (John Kani) explaining that the movie offers the origin story for Mufasa, the lion patriarch featured in 1994’s animated The Lion King and Jon Favreau’s 2019 photorealistic remake of the same name.
Jenkins took to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday to share the trailer, and his post was greeted with both favorable responses and also some negative ones, with the criticism apparently stemming from backlash to Disney’s trend of reimagining its previous animation hits. One user wrote, “Barry, You’re too good and talented for this Iger’s soulless machine,” referring to Disney CEO Bob Iger.

It may be your first time hearing something like this, but here it is. It turns out that The Lion King’s modern adaptation released back in 2019 never disturbed the creators by its critical failure — quite the contrary, it seems to have become an even bigger incentive to come up with a prequel that this time will revolve around Simba’s father Mufasa.

The first trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King was released online yesterday, and when director Barry Jenkins took to social media to share the teaser, he opened himself up for quite a bit of criticism.
There seems to be a perception that Jenkins, who was nominated for an Academy Award for 2016's Best Picture winner Moonlight before going on to helm the critically-acclaimed If Beale Street Could Talk, has "sold out" by directing Disney's The Lion King prequel, which is seen by many as little more than a soulless cash-grab.
One response stated that Jenkins was "too good and talented for [Bob] Iger's soulless machine," while another - from someone who actually interviewed him when Moonlight premiered at TIFF - said the following:
"Come on man. I interviewed you when you premiered Moonlight at TIFF, and that Barry Jenkins wouldn’t have said what you just said. You can do a Disney movie for the check,...

Mufasa: The Lion King will be helmed by director Barry Jenkins of Moonlight fame, unlike Jon Favreau, who directed the 2019 feature, with Donald Glover and Beyoncé returning to voice Simba and Nala, respectively.

You have to admit, even the promise of it is fascinating: what does a photoreal-animated Lion King film look like when it comes from Barry Jenkins – the director of Moonlight, and If Beale Street Could Talk, and The Underground Railroad? We’re about to find out, because Jenkins is directing Mufasa: The Lion King, the follow-up to Jon Favreau’s 2019 The Lion King remake – ostensibly a prequel about the rise of Simba’s legendary dad, but also weaving in sequel threads following Simba and Nala’s burgeoning family. And it’s not that Jenkins is being parachuted in – he’s working with his regular cinematographer James Laxton, and editor Joi McMillon, bringing his impeccable craft to an entirely different type of filmmaking, with the biggest tools blockbusterdom can bring. Check out the trailer here:

It’s time to head back to the Pride Lands in Barry Jenkins’ Lion King prequel. Watch the first Mufasa: The Lion King trailer below.
The Lion King, released in 2019, proved to be a controversial one. While early reactions praised the film’s visual effects, others found fault in its all-cgi creatures. Really, it was a strange move from Disney to call it a live-action version of such a beloved classic when it was all created on a computer screen.
Regardless, the film has spawned a prequel, and Moonlight director Barry Jenkins signed on to direct what we now know is called Mufasa.
Take a look at the Mufasa: The Lion King trailer below.
It certainly looks like it’s going to be more of the same, so if you weren’t a fan of 2019’s The Lion King, something tells us this might be a miss for you too.

The risky and gutsy thing about shows that have their central focus on awful people is that it’s very easy to lack the kind of cool factor that usually keeps the audience hooked on these characters. But if the priority is being unabashedly lifelike, a tale chronicling the drab courses of unlikeable people’s lives hardly has the space to cram the typical note of intrigue into it. Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie’s The Curse is fixated on and adamant about just one thing—not softening the blow. You’d most likely absolutely despise Whitney, Asher, and Dougie’s characters. But the same way you can’t put a filter over utterly obnoxious people’s appalling aura in real life, the main characters in The Curse don’t come with any comforting redeeming qualities that you can focus on. I guess it’s a take-it-or-leave-it scenario you’ve walked into.

This post contains spoilers for this week’s episode of The Curse, which is now streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime.
“The Fire Burns On” begins with a glimpse of an actual episode of Flip-lanthropy (or, as Whitney wants to retitle it, Green Queen). Whitney is displeased with what Dougie is showing her, complaining, “It just feels lifeless.” He pushes back and notes that she has already asked him to take out potential areas of conflict, like racial tensions and crime in Española, and the end result is a preachy show without any friction.

Blue Ivy Carter is in formation — and her viral dance cameo on the Renaissance world tour is helping one of her mother’s songs reach new heights.
Carter first made a surprise appearance at Beyoncé’s May 26 show in Paris, performing the choreography to the beat driven-track “My Power,” which lit up social media. TikTok users quickly hopped onto the trend and performed the dance as well.
The 11-year-old Grammy winner continued to perform the dance at more shows, and streams and sales of the 2019 Beyoncé song are soaring.
Luminate — which tracks music sales, streaming and airplay — says the week after Carter’s appearance, U.S. on-demand streaming for “My Power” jumped 190 percent, while digital sales for the track increased by 189.8 percent. It performed stronger globally: On-demand streaming increased by 218.2 percent, and digital sales were up by 212 percent.
And the week after — as Carter continued to perform at more shows — the song earned more attention.
