The Sundance Film Festival is one of the most highly respected film festivals in the world, and while the horror genre generally doesn’t seem to receive as much respect as it deserves, horror has had a steady presence at Sundance over the years. In fact, just last year the Sundance horror line-up included the likes of Infinity Pool, Talk to Me, My Animal, and Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls. The Sundance 2024 line-up was revealed earlier today (you can see the list Here) – and there again a good number of horror movies included in the program.
Below you can take a closer look at some of the horror movies that will be showing at Sundance 2024, with images to go along with each one of them.
Of course, most of the horror can be found in the Midnight program:

Emergence from pandemic lockdowns and the promise of in-person festivals has excitement brewing for the future of film, and the genre industry is no exception. The official selection of the 2022 Frontières Platform at the Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes is in, and it displays bullish trends for the future of genre.
“There’s a lot of horror, and it kind of goes back to practical effects, and I love that,” says Frontières executive director Annick Mahnert. “Practical effects are coming back, which is great.”
Highlighting this trend is potential standout “Gnomes!” from the Netherlands, a horror film about gnomes who murder curious humans and turn them into sausage while they’re still alive. The film boasts producer and art department master Richard Raaphorst (“Frankenstein’s Army”), who brought the gnomes to life.
Other possible standouts of practical effects are “Requiem for a Robot, “Street Trash” and “Serial Kitten,” which blends costumes and CGI.

Chile’s Infractor and Pejeperro, France’s Promenades and Belgium’s Transit-Transat have teamed up to co-produce “Kaye,” the sophomore directorial effort of Juan Cáceres, a Variety Chilean Talent to Track after his debut “Perro Bomba” nabbed the Ibero-American Prize at the Málaga Festival Zonacine in 2019, among other international awards.
“Kaye” is being presented at the ongoing Málaga co-production forum’s Maff.
The film focuses on Yeka’s childhood, which comes to an end when a stray bullet takes her best friend. Mesmerized by impunity, Yeka infiltrates a family of traffickers, seeking the truth but finding results which confront all of her prejudices.
“‘Kaye’ is a drama with elements of thriller and ‘magical capitalism,’ ” Cáceres told Variety. “We are building a film that works as a platform to expand voices of the marginalized children of Chile to the whole world, along with the same young and diverse team that accompanied me in my first feature.

Brazilian writer-director Felipe Bragança, whose “Don’t Swallow My Heart, Alligator Girl!” played Sundance and Berlin in 2017, has enrolled a team of cutting edge Brazilian indigenous artists to realize movie “Macunaima,” his contemporary reimagining of one of the most important novels in Brazilian literature.
Zahy Guajajara, a poet, actress (“The Brothers”), who formed part of the motorbike gang in “Alligator!,” and indigenous activist, has boarded “Macunaima” as a script collaborator, and the movie’s co-director. Denilson Baniwa, a visual artist and another indigenous activist, will serve as a visual consultant and collaborator.
Anthropologist Hermano Vianna has also joined “Macunaíma” as a script collaborator and conceptual consultant. Set to be presented at International Film Festival Rotterdam’s CineMart co-production market in early February, the insider knowledge and creative talent that these figures bring to the project ensure that it will not be made by an uninformed white outsider, Bragança told Variety in the run-up to CineMart.

Keeping costs low is often a case of “backing into a number”, one producer told trinidad + Tobago film festival’s Caribbean Film Mart attendees at a co-production session on Wednesday.
Damon D’Oliveira of Canada’s Conquering Lion Pictures spoke about the slavery miniseries The Book Of Negroes (pictured) starring Aunjanue Ellis and Cuba Gooding Jr that shot in South Africa and Canada as an official co-production.
“It was about… maintaining a one-third shoot in Canada and two-thirds in South Africa,” D’Oliveira said. “When you get official co-production you determine what the split will be between the two countries and you have to stay within a few percentage points of that.”
“The big benefit [of shooting in South Africa] was the [25% local spend] tax rebate … we did a broadcaster deal, which helped with financing.”
D’Oliveira and French producer Samuel Chauvin of Promenades Films, whose Melaza is a Cuba-France-Panama comedy about a married couple struggling to survive after the closure of the town...
