The opening credits sequence of Scavengers Reign is heavy with doom, with images of the Demeter, an interstellar freighter whose wreckage orbits an alien planet, dissonantly set to peaceful classical music. Bodies float in the vacuum of space, escape pods burn up in the atmosphere, and the leaping flames of a sun hint at the cause of the disaster. It’s a perfect encapsulation of the series that follows, a superb survival story depicting both the planet’s natural beauty and the violent, horrible ends it can visit upon the people who encounter it.
Rendered in a detailed 2D style by the prolific animation studio Titmouse, each of the show’s 12 half-hour episodes cuts between multiple perspectives. After all, the Demeter’s few survivors are scattered in different terrestrial environments, unaware of one another’s existence, and the series delights in foregrounding their often ingenious use of the local ecosystem to survive.

It took a village of creatives at Disney Animation to pull off “Once Upon a Studio,” the animated short that celebrates 100 years of stories and magic. Iconic characters like Snow White and Peter Pan feature alongside Robin Williams’ Genie in a cast of 543 characters from more than 85 feature-length and short films. And it all came together without any artificial intelligence involved.
Directors Dan Abraham and Trent Correy were seeking a way to honor the studio’s legacy. “Once Upon a Studio” takes place at the end of a work day at Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank. The studio becomes a magical place once Disney Legend Burny Mattinson, who worked there for 70 years on films such as “Lady and the Tramp” (1955) and “One Hundred and One Dalmatians” (1961), leaves. Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse step out of a photo and call for their friends to gather for an official 100th Anniversary Studio portrait.

Kitty Green returns to her native Australia for her latest film. Disney revealed new information about Chris Pine’s big villain in its upcoming animated film, Wish.
Everybody loves a good Disney villain. Ursula, Jafar, Mother Gothel, Maleficent—the list goes on. These dastardly evil-gooders are a key part of Disney Animation’s long legacy.
Oddly enough, it’s been a long time since one of the studio's films had a real villain in the spotlight. Not even Bruno, from the extremely popular film Encanto (which is hopefully getting a sequel), can be properly considered a bad guy.

Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid debuted on Disney+ last week and made one hell of a splash. According to Disney, The Little Mermaid has garnered 16 million views in its first five days on the streaming service, which makes it the most-watched Disney movie premiere on Disney+ since the release of Hocus Pocus 2 last year.
While The Little Mermaid wasn’t one of Disney’s strongest-performing live-action remakes, it went on to gross $569 million worldwide and stands (so far) as one of the highest-grossing movies of the year. Judging by the streaming numbers, it seems that many were eager to revisit The Little Mermaid (or watch it for the first time) on the streaming service. Disney says that a view is defined as total stream time divided by runtime.

The hit live-action "The Little Mermaid" just hit Disney+ to stream on Sept. 6, and apart from the original movie's songs like "Part of Your World," "Under the Sea," and "Kiss the Girl," audiences everywhere have gotten to enjoy four new songs courtesy of the original animated movie's composer, Alan Menken, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
For the most part, the songs from the original movie sound the same in the 2023 remake, but Menken did give fans a heads-up that there would be some minor changes to the original lyrics to make the movie, which was initially released in 1989, feel more modern. "There are some lyric changes in 'Kiss the Girl' because people have gotten very sensitive about the idea that [Prince Eric] would, in any way, force himself on [Ariel]," Menken told Vanity Fair in March.
No one would blame you if you initially missed the tweaks Menken and Miranda made to "Kiss the Girl.

The 16th century literary classic Journey to the West is the mother of all Chinese fantasy. The mythological saga has spawned countless adaptations in various media across Asia and beyond, from the cult late ‘70s Japanese TV series to Peking Opera, videogames, graphic novels and a stage spectacle with a score by Blur frontman Damon Albarn and design elements by Gorillaz illustrator Jamie Hewlett.
Prominent among the innumerable film versions is the 2013 blockbuster Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons, directed by Stephen Chow. A similar livewire action-comedy energy infuses Netflix’s The Monkey King, a children’s animated feature based on the sprawling novel’s most popular strand, on which Chow serves as executive producer.
Following well-received originals like Klaus, Over the Moon, My Father’s Dragon, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio and Richard Linklater’s Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood — plus such smart acquisitions as The Mitchells vs. the Machines...

Though “Friends” primarily followed its core six people, the cast certainly had a lot of their own friends stop by the show over the years. In rewatching the show, you might spot a lot of familiar faces that you didn’t remember — or maybe didn’t even know the first time they appeared.
Beginning in 1994, the NBC sitcom ran for 10 seasons. And, considering it ran during the age of television when seasons were usually 23 or 24 episodes long, there were plenty of opportunities for the cast and creators to bring in celebrity guest stars.
Some just came for an episode, and some stuck around a little longer, but each one left their own mark. So, we rounded up just about all of them — excluding those like Tom Selleck and Elliott Gould who were more regularly recurring stars on “Friends.”

Disney's magical live-action reimagining of "The Little Mermaid" hit theaters in May, and now it's finally heading to streaming. The remake, which stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, was one of the most anticipated movies of the year, especially after unveiling its sprawling, full-length trailer during the 2023 Oscars. Its cast also includes Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Daveed Diggs as Sebastian.
Though live-action Disney remakes can sometimes be hit or miss, it seems the new "The Little Mermaid" has something everyone can enjoy (even adults who are fans of the iconic story). From exciting new songs to renditions of classics from the original 1989 movie, the rebooted movie breathes new life into a familiar tale that today's generation has fallen in love with - especially with Bailey at the forefront.

Few Disney villains are as delightfully wicked as Ursula, the sea witch in "The Little Mermaid." That goes for the animated version voiced by Pat Carroll in the 1989 film as well as the less impressive live-action version with Melissa McCarthy. She just loves being evil and milks every second of enjoyment out of her dastardly plan to take Ariel's voice (Halle Bailey) to get back at her brother Titan (Javier Bardem).
McCarthy was born for this role and made it her own, including her big number "Poor Unfortunate Souls," which was a lot to live up to. She did, however, have one issue with a bit of advice she got from director Rob Marshall and producer John DeLuca. So many kids beloved the original film, and this advice/stage direction might have gotten this version of the film pushed out of the PG slot it ended up in, as she recently told Entertainment Weekly.

Many shows are about one thing in particular, with a number of subplots serving to support the main theme. While in some ways that is the case with the Apple TV+ drama “Bad Sisters,” there’s so much going on at any one given time that it’s almost hard to keep track of what started it all in the first place. That would be, of course, the death of The Prick (Claes Bang), also known as Jp, the manipulative, abusive husband of Grace (Anne-Marie Duff), and the show’s central mystery: did Grace’s four sisters kill him, and, if so, how did they do it?
This show moves seamlessly between multiple timelines, chronicling the inciting incident for each of the sisters that made them hate Jp, their multiple efforts to concoct a way to cleverly dispose of him, and the aftermath when a pair of insurance investigator brothers...

“The Little Mermaid” is back.
And this time the beloved Disney classic, originally released in 1989 and heralding a new golden age of animated features for the company, is being brought to life via a combination of live-action photography and computer-generated imagery. It still loosely conforms to the story laid out by Hans Christian Andersen in 1837 and hews more closely to the animated feature written and directed by Ron Clements and John Musker.
Ariel (now portrayed by Halle Bailey) is still a feisty mermaid living under the thumb of her overbearing father King Triton (Javier Bardem). She still swoons over Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) and makes a Faustian bargain with Ursula the sea witch (Melissa McCarthy). And she still has a trio of animal sidekicks. If you’ve seen the animated original, you’ll be able to predict what is around every crashing wave, which isn’t to say that there...

Always the musical showman, “The Little Mermaid” director Rob Marshall insisted that the most gestural parts of Melissa McCarthy’s live-action performance as Ursula were supported by eight puppeteered tentacles. This was especially vital during the Divine-inspired “Poor Unfortunate Souls” showstopper, where the sea witch lures Ariel (Halle Bailey) into a trap to become human.
“For Rob, performance is the most important thing,” Mpc VFX supervisor Patrick Ledda told IndieWire. “And, in particular, the musical beats. For instance, ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls’ was built in layers. The first version that Rob shot, he was literally using a Disney Ursula doll, and the set was just made of simple cardboard boxes, and he would move the doll around to create the journey of Ursula in this world. Then we did a previs pass to visualize the whole sequence very roughly.”

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” webbed up a stellar $120.5 million in its domestic box office debut. The film beat expectations to land the second-biggest opening weekend of the year, behind only “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” with $146 million, as well as the third-biggest opening weekend for any “Spider-Man” film.
Sony’s animated sequel is benefitting from great reviews and positive word-of-mouth, as well as goodwill from its predecessor, 2018’s Oscar-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” Initial ticket sales were significantly higher than the first film, which introduced audiences to Miles Morales and the idea that “anyone can wear the mask” and opened to just $35.5 million. But it proved to have enduring appeal and stuck around in theaters for a while, ending its run with $190 million in North America and $384 million globally.

When Bob Iger took over Walt Disney again, one of his first moves was to reassure Wall Street that more sequels and remakes were coming. Disney has a lot in its vault, and remaking animated classics as live-action movies is widely seen as a safe strategy, with built-in audiences for familiar fare.
That strategy is coming into question, though, as weak international box office numbers for “The Little Mermaid” trickle in. The live-action remake of the 1989 film grossed $95 million in its Friday-Sunday North American debut, but just $68 million overseas. For comparison, star power fueled the 2019 “Aladdin” remake with Will Smith and 2017’s “Beauty and the Beast” with Emma Watson, both of which earned more than $1 billion, mostly overseas.
What ties Disney’s recent remakes together is that they’re primarily based on movies from what’s called its “Renaissance” period — a range from the late 1980s to late 1990s when...

Spoiler Alert: This interview includes details about Disney’s The Little Mermaid
Good tides and accolades continue to roll in for Disney’s latest live-action remake, The Little Mermaid. Similarly to the 1989 classic, The Little Mermaid follows the story of the titular mermaid, Ariel, a precocious teenager who yearns to walk amongst the sun-soaked earth of the human world. Since the film’s debut over the three-day weekend, it made an impressive box office splash to the tune of $95.5M and is projected to set sail towards $163.8M, factoring in the international markets as it makes its global debut through Sunday. It seems that The Little Mermaid’s continued success is due in no small part to the transformative magic of the film’s onscreen players, whose modernized performances offer more to chew on this time around than its animated predecessor, warranting repeat visits to the movie theater.

The Little Mermaid is swimming laps around the competition at the Memorial Day weekend box office.
Disney’s live-action remake of the iconic animated film is headed for an estimated four-day domestic debut of $118.6 million, the holiday’s fifth-biggest opening of all time, according to final weekend actuals. The three-day gross is an estimated $96 million-plus. (On Saturday, the film looked to earn north of $120 million over the long holiday weekend, but domestic estimates shifted.)
Overseas, Little Mermaid started off with a disappointing $68.1 million from 51 markets for a projected global launch of $186.7 million through Monday. The pic drowned in China, opening to just $2.5 million. Box office pundits say the social media campaign protesting a Black actress being cast as Ariel could be having an impact in Asian markets and elsewhere.
In North America, The Little Mermaid earned a promising A CinemaScore. It is the first 2023 summer tentpole to target females, who...

Remaking Disney's animated classics is a fool's errand, and yet a lucrative enough one that many filmmakers have tried their hand at it and mostly come up empty. So far, the only director to have moderate success at the task is indie darling David Lowery, who's batting two for two after this spring's underrated if flawed "Peter Pan and Wendy" and the 2016 family drama "Pete's Dragon."
It's to Lowery's credit that in each case, he's tackled a pre-existing title that either has a checkered and controversial history ("Peter Pan") or boasts a small enough fanbase that redoing the entire story won't alienate too many people ("Pete's Dragon"). But if you step too far off the beaten path with remaking titles from Disney's Renaissance era of the 1980s and 1990s, you risk angering most viewers. The alternative: films like "The Little Mermaid," the latest Disney remake that purports to change...
