Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter will release his first solo album, Mythologies, which will feature an orchestral piece he wrote for a ballet of the same name. The album is set to arrive on April 7 via Erato/Warner Classics.
Mythologies is Bangalter’s first independent orchestral work, commissioned by choreographer Angelin Preljocaj. The ballet premiered last summer, a collaboration between Ballet Preljocaj and the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine, which performed Bangalter’s score under the direction of Romain Dumas. Pathe is relocating Guillaume Canet’s live-action movie “Asterix & Obelix” to France, instead of China where it was initially planned to shoot last year, and couldn’t do so due to the pandemic. Swedish soccer star Zlatan Ibrahimovic has joined the cast.
Now titled “Asterix & Obelix, the Middle Kingdom,” the movie is budgeted at 60 million Euros and marks the next installment of the blockbuster French comic book franchise. The pic is being produced by the French banners Les Enfants Terribles and Tresor Films, with Pathe co-producing and handling French distribution rights and international sales.
Pathe has already enlisted a flurry of buyers, including Netflix for several undisclosed territories, Leonine in Germany, Unicorn for CSI and Baltics, Blitz for ex Yugoslavia, Kinoswiat for Poland, and Rosebud 21 for Greece. Pathe will distribute in France and Switzerland.
The shoot will start April 12 with a stellar cast. Alongside Ibrahimovic, the cast includes Marion Cotillard,...

Pathé has finalized cast for Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom (previously known as Asterix & Obelix: Silk Road), the upcoming fifth live action film from the beloved children’s franchise.
Cameras are set to roll this spring, with cast including Guillaume Canet as Asterix, Gilles Lellouche as Obelix (it’s the first time in the five-film French-language franchise that Gerard Depardieu won’t portray Obelix), Vincent Cassel as Cesar, Marion Cotillard as Cleopatra and Jonathan Cohen as Finalthesis. Also starring are Ramzy Bedia, Julie Chen, Linh-Dan Pham, Pierre Richard, and in his feature debut, soccer star Zlatan Ibrahimovic as Oneofus.
Philippe Mechelen and Julien Hervé wrote the screenplay, and Guillaume Canet is also directing. Project is produced by Trésor Films, Pathé Films and Les Enfants Terribles. The score will come from French musician Matthieu Chedid. The initial plan was to shoot in China but production will take place in France and Morocco.

As Martin Scorsese once said, “Music and cinema fit together naturally. Because there’s a kind of intrinsic musicality to the way moving images work when they’re put together. It’s been said that cinema and music are very close as art forms, and I think that’s true.” Indeed, the right piece of music — whether it’s an original score or a carefully selected song — can do wonders for a sequence, and today we’re looking at the 25 films that best expressed this notion this year.
From seasoned composers to accomplished musicians, as well as a smattering of soundtracks, each musical example perfectly transported us to the world of the film. We should note that Twin Peaks: The Return, with both its sound design and weekly musical selections, was the most eclectic, transportive aural experience of the year, but we reserved this list to theatrically-released films.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Crimson Peak (Guillermo del Toro)
Crimson Peak works as many things: a melodramatic romance; both the recreation of a period and a revival of the way movies have made us perceive it; a genre-jumping comedy; and a critique of capitalistic excess. It does these things earnestly and without compromise, and it’s far braver — far more admirable — for having done so. What Guillermo del Toro’s new film doesn...

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. As far as...

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

‘Tell No One’ thriller to get Hollywood remake (photo: ‘Tell No One’ 2006, with François Cluzet and Marie-Josée Croze) Gavin O’Connor, among whose credits are Tumbleweeds, Warrior, and the upcoming Natalie Portman action drama Jane Got a Gun, "is in negotiations" to direct Universal and Warner Bros.’ thriller Tell No One, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Whether the film will be a direct remake of Guillaume Canet’s Ne le dis à personne (2006), starring François Cluzet and Marie-Josée Croze, or be based on the original source — Harlan Coben’s novel Tell No One — is unclear. Canet and Philippe Lefebvre were credited for the screenplay of the French movie. Frequent Steven Spielberg collaborator Frank Marshall (The Color Purple, War Horse, Jurassic World) is producing the new Tell No One. Academy Award winner Chris Terrio (Argo) will be writing the adaptation. Curiously, Argo director Ben Affleck had been previously attached to this...

It can be easy to forget sometimes that there are animated films that don't come from Pixar and Disney or Dreamworks considering how they tend to dominate American theaters and leave little room for foreign competition. However, every now and then a little gem from the likes of Hayao Miyazaki or some other even smaller studio makes it into the fray, and it's important to take note of them. Back in 2011, French Director and writer Bibo Bergeron created a fun little animated adventure called A Monster in Paris that had some creative visuals with a resemblance to a slightly stockier, more angular Dreamworks film but above all it had a fantastic musical number by Vanessa Paradis and Mathieu Chedid (aka -M-). The musical number is the primary reason anyone should seek the film out, as the creativity of the story and the comedy don't hold up to scrutiny nearly as well.

A wacky inventor, his camera-crazy best friend and a madcap monkey make a massive mistake when let loose in a mad scientist’s laboratory. What they fail to realize, however, is that this ‘monster’ is actually a soft-centered soul with an astounding talent for music.

Pittsburgh rapper's independent debut tops 'Breaking Dawn' soundtrack.

Mac Miller
Photo: David Wolff-Patrick/Redferns
Who has enough mojo to beat out the soundtrack to one of the year's most-anticipated movies? How about Mac Miller? Right about now, the Pittsburgh rapper is probably having the best day ever because, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, his independently released debut full-length album, Blue Slide Park, is going to debut at #1 on the Billboard albums chart next week, thanks to sales of more than 144,000.
The feat by the 19-year-old Mc marks the first time an indie debut release has hit #1 since 1995's Dogg Food by Tha Dogg Pound.
A bit further back at #3 is Now 40, which moved 119,000 copies, followed by "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" soundtrack (105,000) with tunes by the Joy Formidable, Theophilus London, Iron & Wine, Christina Perri and the Noisettes. The two...
