It looks like James Franco has found a great new film project to jump on board. According to Variety, he is in talks to in and direct a film that will tell the story of prolific children’s book author, cartoonist, and lyricist Shel Silverstein.
Shel Silverstein is best known for his children's books such as The Giving Tree, Where The Sidewalk Ends, Falling Up, A Light in the Attic, Everything On It, The Missing Piece and more. I own all of these books and I enjoyed reading many of them all the time when I was growing up!
In case you didn't know, Silverstein was also a singer, songwriter, and screenwriter. According to the report, the movie will focus "not only on his struggles professionally, but personally as well, and trace how he became the iconic author he is today."

Many argue that homage is the highest form of flattery – especially when it comes to film. If that is indeed the case, then Richard Linklater should be experiencing some extreme ego-inflation right about now – for Captain America himself has clearly chosen to tip his shield to the legendary indie director’s Before Sunrise with his directorial debut, Before We Go.
With Evans also taking the lead role, and Alice Eve (Star Trek Into Darkness) as his co-star, this romantic tale comes from the writer of Rain Man – Ronald Bass – along with Chris Shafer and Paul Vicknair (both screenwriters of the Chris Evans movie Playing It Cool), as well as Jen Smolka (The Good Cook).
You can check out the official plot synopsis below:
“Flustered and fearful after a brush with a mugger, Brooke (Alice Eve) races through Manhattan’s Grand Central Station, desperate to catch the night’s last Boston-bound train.

There's something so distinctly beautiful about Richard Linklater's refined, stripped down and deeply mature Before trilogy. It's easy to see why people would want to mimic it. It's two characters, interacting amongst gorgeous backdrops like prime European destinations, discussing life, love and anything-and-everything in-between. It's not hard to film, and paves the way for hearty character development. Based on the early reviews from last year's Tiff, however, Chris Evans' attempt to capture that spark in-a-bottle with his directorial debut, Before We Go, didn't quite work as well. Besides moving the two soon-to-be love-stricken strangers' action to New York City, Evans' movie looks strikingly similar -- right down to the name -- to what the series attempted before, with his character, musician Nick Vaughan, meeting lost young woman Brooke Dalton (Alice Eve) thanks to a train -- this being one she missed, in addition to having her purse robbed -- and having the charismatic,...

Chris Evans explores the incessant rom-com theme of whether heterosexual males and females can ever be just friends in the first trailer for Justin Reardon‘s “Playing It Cool.” Originally titled the less clichéd “A Many Splintered Thing,” the Chris Shafer and Paul Vicknair-scripted rom-com stars Evans, fresh from receiving U.S. distribution for his directorial debut “Before We Go,” as an aspiring action movie screenwriter who is forced by his agent, Bryan (played by Evans’ “Captain American: The Winter Soldier” co-star Anthony Mackie) to pay his dues with a rom-com in promise of a six-week action film set in Malaysia. Evans’ [...]

Can it be considered fantasy when someone with the face and charm of Chris Evans is unlucky in love? Maybe so, but Playing It Cool is sticking firmly in romantic comedy territory, as shown by its first trailer. The idea of the cynical romantic, burned too many times by love but perhaps willing to give it just one… more… chance is a well-used trope in rom-coms. So, perhaps is the idea that men and women – particularly those in some state of potential lust – have trouble just being friends. In this case, our love-blighted hero is a screenwriter who is sick of writing romantic comedies and really wants to graduate to action. Part of the problem is his own love life is a mess, and is further complicated when he meets the seemingly ideal Michelle Monaghan. Trouble is, she’s engaged to Ioan Gruffudd, so they decide to be pals. Good luck with that,...

I’m just going to put this out there: romantic comedies are now really hard to write. I mean, as a creative endeavour, it’s a full-on cliché minefield. To correctly balance all the elements required – chemistry, tension, humour, romance – while avoiding the most well-worn cinematic devices, is monumentally difficult. A fool’s errand, some might say. And yet, still they appear, because still writers try to bring something new and fresh to the genre. Still we buy those tickets, and sit in the dark – hoping to be pleasantly surprised, but knowing we will probably be disappointed.
So, here we are again, with a new trailer for another daring attempt. The film is titled Playing It Cool in this preview, but was previously known as A Many Splintered Thing. Does it achieve the impossible dream? Is this film that most elusive of treasures – that mythic creature that continually slips our collective grasp?...

But Evans isn't the kind of guy who believes in that cheesy love bullshit. Cue falling in love with the right girl. Watch! If you were ever a grade schooler in desperate need of clever rhymes and you had finally graduated to the point where you were just a hair too mature for the wacky words of a one Dr. Seuss, your grubby little hands likely reached for a heavy Shel Silverstein tome like “Where the Sidewalk Ends” or “A Light in the Attic.” His sprawling books of colorful poetry and beautiful accompanying illustrations (all his own) chronicled all the issues that mattered the most to children. For instance, flipping open a Silverstein book could point you to the plight of a modern day King Midas, who turns everything he touches to raspberry jello. A perfect hell! Or maybe you’d settle on the story of Melinda Mae, the girl who tried to eat an entire whale, an actually does so in the span of 80 years. That’s just silly. Now, the man who brought so much joy to our...

Silver Linings Playbook star Bradley Cooper to star in Hollywood version of German box-office hit, with a view to directing
Bradley Cooper could become the latest actor to go behind the cameras after signing on to star in and potentially direct a Warner Bros remake of the German blockbuster Kokowääh.
The original film starred actor-director Til Schweiger with his real-life daughter Emma Tiger Schweiger and was Germany's biggest movie of 2011 at the box office. It centres on a carefree bachelor who discovers that his friend's daughter may be his own biological child, resulting from a one-night stand eight years previously. The film's title derives from a poor pronunciation of "coq au vin" by a German speaker.

Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan have acquired a whole bunch of new friends joining them on the set of A Many Splintered Thing. The film, which is being directed by Justin Reardon, now has Topher Grace, Anthony Mackie, Aubrey Plaza, and Giovanni Ribisi on-board to star. Deadline, which found the casting news, says that the movie exists somewhere between (500) Days of Summer and Amelie, telling the story of a down-and-out young man who meets and falls in love with an engaged women white attending a charity dinner and pretending to be a philanthropist. Getting encouragement from his friends and ignoring her soon-to-be husband, the protagonist decides to fake a platonic relationship with her so that he can make his way to her heart. News about the "anti-romantic comedy" sprung up early last month when Evans and Monaghan were cast. The script by Chris Shafer and Paul Vicknair was featured on...

Anti-romantic comedy? Count me in! A Many Splintered Thing is an upcoming indie which comes from director Justin Reardon, but – for an indie project – it already has some seriously good cast on board. I mean, Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan make the leading duo, while Anthony Mackie, Aubrey Plaza, Giovanni Ribisi and Philip Baker Hall are all in talks to join them! That’s not bad at all!
Unfortunately, at this moment we have nothing to share about the (possible) new characters, but we do know that the movie will center on a man disillusioned by love (Evans) who meets an engaged woman (Monaghan).
Guess that’s the anti-romantic part of the story?
Excited by the challenge and egged on by his friends, he feigns a platonic relationship in order to keep seeing her as he tries to win her heart.
Anyway, let us also mention that Reardon is directing...

With filming set to begin at the end of the month, director Justin Reardon is now tying down the rest of the cast that will join Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan in his debut feature. And for his first film, he's getting quite a nice assist on talent. Some of our favorite up-and-comers, reliable character actors, and stone-cold veterans are rounding out the cast with Anthony Mackie, Aubrey Plaza, Giovanni Ribisi, Topher Grace and Philip Baker Hall all set to the join the picture. The Black List-approved script (it was also a 2011 Nicholl Fellowship Finalist) by Chris Shafer and Paul Vicknair is described as being along the lines of "Amelie" and "(500) Days Of Summer," and tells the story of a man (Evans) who has given up on love, until he meets an engaged woman (Monaghan) at a charity dinner, by posing as a philanthropist, He pretends to be her platonic friend,...

Despite his disgraceful good looks, Chris Evans will need a little help if he’s to woo Michelle Monaghan in A Many Splintered Thing. Fortunately for him, he’ll get some backup from Topher Grace. And that's not all the new arrivals, as Aubrey Plaza, Anthony Mackie, Philip Baker Hall and Giovanni Ribisi are in various stages of negotiation.Justin Reardon is directing the anti-rom-com from Paul Vicknair and Chris Shaffer’s script. It’ll find a guy disillusioned by love (Evans) sneaking into a charity dinner for mean-spirited fun by pretending to be a philanthropist. There, he meets a beautiful woman (Monaghan) and is immediately taken with her despite his negative attitude to all things love-related. Trouble is, she’s engaged and her fiancé is a stick-in-the-mud who barely likes her leaving his side. So, egged on by his friends (including Grace as his best pal), he feigns a...

As happy as I am to see Chris Evans get a big platform and, in turn, healthy coverage for his work with Marvel, it’s all the more pleasing to see the actor stick with more modest roots. Case in point is, no, not The Iceman, but A Many Splintered Thing, a film which Deadline tells us he’ll both headline and executive produce; Michelle Monaghan is joining Evans in the former capacity.

The 2011 Black List, the Top Unproduced Screenplays of the year has been released. The best unproduced screenplays from The Black List 2011 is compiled by votes from over 300 “execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year’s list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman.”
Regarding the validity of The Black List, things to keep in mind:
some of these screenplays have already been acquired and are already in development, though…none will have entered principal photography by December 31, 2011. Also worth pointing out is that, as in previous years, there have been rumors that some of the participants have been accused of using the Black List to promote their own clients or friends.

The Black List of 2011 continues with the second-half of the list showcasing the screenplays that received the most number of votes.
Remember, this is a list voted on by Hollywood professionals of what they personally believe to be the best unproduced screenplays written in 2011. You might recognize titles for movies that are in development. That's fine by The Black List rules; the only condition that the screenplay must meet is that it's not being filmed within this calendar year. For Black List 2011 selections like Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, that makes it valid for Black List inclusion.
If you've missed the first half of the list you can find it here.

The 2011 Black List has arrived online and there are a bunch of the hottest scripts in Hollywood. Some have already been picked up by studios, while most are still unproduced. Here is the press release: The Black List was compiled from the suggestions of over 300 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to ten of their favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2011 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year.
This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the The Black List.
All reasonable effort has been made to confirm the information contained herein. The Black List apologizes for all misspellings, misattributions, incorrect representation identification, and questionable 2011 affiliations.
It has been said many times, but it's worth repeating:
The Black List is not a "best of" list. It is, at best, a "most liked" list.

[1] Each December since 2004, studio executive Franklin Leonard has compiled the best unproduced screenplays of the year, as voted by hundreds of execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year's list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman. It should be noted that the headline is somewhat misleading -- some of these screenplays have already been acquired and are already in development, though according to Leonard none will have entered principal photography by December 31, 2011. This year at the Austin Film Festival, studio executive and “Black List” founder Franklin Leonard introduced the opening film, Butter. It’s a fantastic satirical comedy written by Jason Micallef and Leonard’s post-screening Q&A with him was equally hilarious and unconventional.
Sitting in the upper deck at the Paramount Theatre, I was in awe at how Leonard had not only created the list just six years prior but how it provided such legitimacy to emerging screenwriters, like Micallef. He was relatively unknown in ‘08, but his script placed third on the list. Now he has a movie coming out starring Jennifer Garner, his new scripts have Jack Black and Jason Segel attached (separately), and he wrote a movie titled Good Vibrations about, um, marital aids starring Charlize Theron. That’s the power of the Black List.
Simply put, “The Black List” is a collection of the best unproduced screenplays...

Though it may seem as if Hollywood’s freshest talent is only interested in starring in adapted material if it’s sprung from books that use the words “twilight” or “hunger” or “dreamyvampthing” (maybe not that last one) in their titles, Amanda Seyfried is going a different route. The actress has been attached to the starring role in McG‘s The Girl Who Conned the Ivy League since March, but it wasn’t until today that the director’s Wonderland Sound and Vision, who are producing the project, got around to hiring scribes to adapt the material. Newcomers Chris Shafer and Paul Vicknair will pen the script for the film, which is based on a “Rolling Stone” article of the same name written by Sabrina Rubin Erdely. The film focuses on the incredible real-life story of Esther Reed, a relative nobody from Montana who, by way of a staggering list of crimes, frauds...
