The explosion of Afrobeats has been one of the biggest stories in the music industry over the past five years, with acts like Burna Boy, Davido, Asake, and Tems becoming global superstars. As Africa’s musical imprint around the world continues to become more prominent, its artists now have a Grammy category all to themselves: Best African Music Performance.
“It makes sense, given that reggae or spoken word have their own categories,” says Gracey Mae, a U.K.-based PR and marketing consultant and Recording Academy member who co-authored the proposal for the award.

The Two Men Have Been Waving for a while before Asake sees them. They’re wearing dirty white T-shirts on the balcony of a tall construction project in Victoria Island, an upscale neighborhood in Lagos, Nigeria. It took them a minute to figure out who was standing in the garden of a nearby restaurant, with his distinctly lean frame and shock of gold dreads — but since they did, they’ve been trying to get his attention.

Nigerian street-pop star Asake is back with a new song, “2:30,” which is set to appear on a full-length project expected to arrive later this year.
The new tune finds Asake tapping into his roots to celebrate his authenticity and individuality over a beat (produced by Magicsticks and BlaiseBeatz) that pairs simmering percussion with some synths that sound straight out of a dingy basement. The single “2:30” also arrives with a lavish music video, which was directed by Edgar Esteves and shot in Los Angeles.

O2 Academy Brixton will remain closed until January following the death of two young people at an Asake concert.
Lambeth City Council have ordered that the venue stays shut until the new year, when a decision will be made regarding reopening.
The venue had already been temporarily closed following the tragic death of two people at Nigerian singer Asake’s concert on Thursday 15 December.
It was originally reported that the concert was stopped early after a surge of people without tickets had tried to enter the venue.
However, new reports have emerged that suggest the fatal incidents happened when a clash of people leaving and entering had occurred.
“Given the severity of events of the 15th December 2022, the risks to public safety as a consequence of serious disorder arising from a lack of crowd control at the front doors of the venue remain high if the venue was able to operate as before,...

Drake reportedly lost a 1m bet that he put on the World Cup Final.
The final took place on Sunday (18 December) and saw Argentina beat France on penalties.
However, Drake – who reportedly put his money on Argentina – lost his bet due to a technicality, Vulture reports.
Drake apparently bet that the team would win on a “1x2” market bet, which means that the team needs to win within regulation time.
Regulation time is the normal length of a football game before any extra time is allocated.
But unfortunately for Drake, the game was forced to go to extra time and penalties after France scored last minute.
Meanwhile Drake lose USD1.000.000 bet due to Kylian Mbappé’s last-minute goal before the penalties...

Kerry Katona has admitted that she once didn’t go on a cruise after watching Titanic.
The ex-Atomic Kitten had apparently spent £14,000 on the holiday, but decided not to go after she watched the film based on the real-life disaster.
While hosting her BBC Sounds podcast Wheel of Misfortune, Katona told the story while discussing holiday horrors with guest Danielle Lloyd and callers.
The singer admitted that she’d already been frightened of the sea, but lost her nerve the night before after watching the film.
“I paid £14,000 once to go on a cruise right,” she began.
“The day before, s*** myself because I don’t like the ocean, didn’t go and I lost all my money,” she explained.
“I think I’d just watched Titanic,” she admitted.
More than 1,500 people died when the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank in 1912.

Fans of BTS member Jin, who started his 18 months of mandatory military service from Tuesday, thronged the Yeoncheon bootcamp near the North Korean border to see off the star.
Kim Seok Jin, the oldest member of the South Korean mega music band BTS, also posted a photo of himself on the online fan platform Weverse in a dramatic military buzz cut that sent his fans into a frenzy.
Under the photo, he wrote: “It looks cuter than I expected.”
Other band members of BTS will, in future, also enlist for military service, the band’s management agency said in October. The agency said that the members of BTS “are looking forward to reconvening as a group again around 2025 following their service commitment”.
In South Korea where all able-bodied men must join the military, Jin’s conscription sparked a fierce debate on the rules. Many believed that exemptions should be provided to prominent entertainers like BTS.

Made in Lagos — the great and Grammy-nominated fourth album from Afrobeats leader Wizkid — could make you forget the slick singer is good for getting the party started with intense, uptempo songs. While most of Made in Lagos is made for slow whines and cooling out, Wizkid’s got dance floor fire like “Caro,” “African Bad Gyal,” and “Pakurumo,” that prove his versatility. In fact, his debut, 2011’s Superstar, is energetic, electronic fare with an African edge, likely a product of Edm’s influence on that era.

Asake appears on the Zoom screen, a puff of smoke rising behind him, his chunky dreads — often dyed gold and green — hidden under a black Ushanka that contrasts his plain white shirt.
Asake’s music evokes a deep connection to the gritty realities of Lagos, and our interview had been slated to take place in a part of the city that bears significant meaning to him. But the singer, 27, needed to fly to the U.S. for his first international promo tour, and so we are instead soldiering through sporadic moments of wonky cross-continental internet.
