High School will not be returning for a second season. Amazon Freevee has cancelled the coming-of-age drama series. The series, created by Clea DuVall, premiered on the streaming service in October 2022.
Inspired by the High School memoir by Tegan and Sara Quin, the drama series takes place in the 1990s and stars TikTok creators Railey and Seazynn Gilliland. Told against a backdrop of grunge and rave culture, the series weaves between parallel and discordant memories of twin sisters growing up down the hall from one another.
Cobie Smulders and Kyle Bornheimer guested as the twins' parents. The other cast members include Olivia Rouyre, Amanda Fix, Brianne Tju, Geena Meszaros, Cj Valleroy, and Nate Corddry.

There will be no second season for High School. Amazon Freevee has canceled the coming-of-age drama based on Tegan and Sara Quin’s bestselling memoir after one season, Deadline has confirmed.
The cancellation is not a big surprise. The series’ last aired its first and only 8-episode season in October 2022.
Produced by Amazon Studios and Plan B Entertainment, High School is a story about finding your own identity—a journey made even more complicated when you have a twin whose own struggle and self-discovery so closely mimic your own. Amazon’s Freevee is dropping out of High School.
The ad-supported free streamer has opted to cancel the heartfelt series inspired by the memoir from Grammy-nominated twin sibling performers Tegan and Sara Quin after a single season.
The writing for the cancellation has been on the wall. Despite rave reviews, High School last aired in October 2022 with the formal decision to cancel the show coming nearly two years after the fact.
Sources say Amazon-owned Freevee wanted to renew High School for a second season, with executives in late 2022 expressing enough optimism for showrunner Clea DuVall to open a mini-room to craft a sophomore run. Ultimately, sources say the completion rate for High School left Freevee and Amazon execs little choice but to cancel the series despite the fact that scripts for an entire second season had already been completed.

Paring down on some of your streaming services to save money? You don’t have to give up on entertaining TV shows. Free ad-supported streaming TV is on the rise, with services such as Pluto, Tubi, and the Roku Channel offering a mix of familiar favorites and original programming. There’s also Amazon Freevee, which is home to a small mix of shows such Bosch: Legacy and Leverage: Redemption. Here’s a roundup of five shows you can stream on Freevee.
‘Bosch: Legacy’ is a spinoff of Prime Video’s ‘Bosch’ Mimi Rogers and Titus Welliver in ‘Bosch: Legacy’ | Tyler Golden for Amazon Freevee
Bosch was one of the most popular original series on Prime Video, and many fans were disappointed when it was announced the series about LAPD detective Harry Bosch would end after seven seasons. Fortunately, Amazon decided it wasn’t ready to say goodbye to the character played by Titus Welliver.

“There was not a moment I forgot just how crazy it was what we were asking them to do,” remembers Clea DuVall about casting the stars of her Freevee series “High School.” She and fellow showrunner Laura Kittrell chose twins Railey Gilliland and Seazynn Gilliland to play fictionalized versions of the real-life musical duo Tegan and Sara Quin, even though neither had any acting experience. Kittrell adds that on the first day of shooting, all their doubts melted away. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“High School” is based on Tegan and Sara’s autobiography of the same name, and the series is a queer coming-of-age story that chronicles a year in the twins’ lives as they first discover their talent for music while navigating a new high school. Tegan and Sara have branched out from music into television with their new Prime Video series “High School”, inspired by the twins’ own experiences as teenagers, with real-life twins Railey and Seazynn Gilliland playing the TV versions of Tegan and Sara Quin.
Among the scenes in the series include the twins learning how to play the guitar riff for Smashing Pumpkins’ hit “Today”, and in a new podcast appearance with Pumpkins’ frontman William Patrick Corgan they reveal just how important his band was to them.
Speaking with Corgan on his “Thirty-Three with William Patrick Corgan” podcast, the duo opened up about the influence his band had on their development, both musically and emotionally, as teenagers.

Before 21-year-old twins Railey and Seazynn Gilliland were cast as real-life indie-pop sister duo Tegan and Sara Quin in Amazon Freevee’s “High School,” they were working at Round Table Pizza in Fresno, Calif., and making goofy TikToks on the side. Neither really knew about the Grammy-nominated band —except when their growing TikTok fan base would point out their resemblance.
“We had heard the names ‘Tegan and Sara’ because people in my comments section would compare us,” Railey tells Variety on a gray day at a park in the Mount Washington neighborhood of Los Angeles. “But we never really looked into them.”
Then, Railey got a Dm from Tegan, who had stumbled on her TikTok account. Tegan explained that she and Sara were adapting their bestselling memoir “High School” — which chronicles their teenage discovery of their passion for music — into a TV show, and were looking for identical twins to audition.

Parents would sidle over to Clea DuVall a lot 20 years ago. “We watched your movie,” they’d tell her. No title was mentioned. Not ever. But she always knew which one they were talking about. “There was always lots of subtext to it,” she recalls. “‘We watched your movie. It was very important to our daughter.’” Sometimes those daughters were hovering quietly nearby. Probably kicking themselves later on that they were too tongue-tied to say anything. The movie was But I’m a Cheerleader; the 1999 gay conversion camp romcom was to turn DuVall into a living come-to-Jesus moment for Y2K’s baby lesbians. “Those were the times where…,” she smiles, trailing off. “Like, Ok, this is what it feels like to do something that matters.”

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains light spoilers for the first four episodes of “High School,” now streaming on Amazon Freevee.
When Clea DuVall first met the Canadian indie musicians Tegan and Sara Quin years ago, “I was not familiar with their music,” she recalled in an interview this week. Nonetheless, after DuVall — a prolific actor in movies such as “But I’m a Cheerleader” and “Argo” — was introduced to the duo when she joined some friends who were seeing them perform, the three women eventually all became good friends “through being in the same circles.” As DuVall began to explore directing, the first things she ever did were promotional videos for Tegan and Sara’s “Heartthrob” record, released in early 2013. Since then, she’s collaborated with them a number of times: Among other things. Sara Quin scored DuVall’s 2016 feature debut as a writer-director “The Intervention,” and Tegan and Sara wrote...

As titles go, it doesn’t get much more generic than Amazon Freevee’s High School, which could suggest anything from a broad parody to a high-minded documentary to a gritty reboot of High School Musical. What it probably doesn’t suggest is what it actually is: a tender portrait of two teenage girls that draws its strength from its knack for unvarnished details and uncommon sense of empathy.
It also just so happens to be a music biopic of sorts, given that it’s adapted from Canadian indie pop duo Tegan and Sara Quin’s memoir of the same title. But you don’t have to be able to name a single tune of theirs to appreciate High School on its own merits. You just have to be familiar with that uniquely adolescent pain of realizing that growing up can sometimes mean...

The second scene in “High School,” before even the title card makes an appearance, sees future Canadian pop star Tegan Quin absently staring at the already-iconic Icelandic pop star Björk. While the swan queen would serve as a sound role model for any artistic-minded youth, Björk’s words barely register with the brooding young woman, sitting in her basement, building resentment toward a sister who’s upstairs monopolizing their once-shared friend, Phoebe (Olivia Rouyre). Soon, in a fight ostensibly started over a loud boombox, Sara (Seazynn Gilliland) gets one heck of a shiner from her frustrated sibling, Tegan (played by Railey Gilliland).
But just as the sudden outburst of violence isn’t a sign of dark and dangerous events to come, Björk’s wisdom isn’t doomed to obscurity — not for viewers, anyway. “I think I’ve been playing music long enough to realize that if I’m having fun,...
