Before "Star Wars," there was "Thx 1138." A strange, dystopic science fiction movie packed with big ideas up to its eyeballs, "Thx 1138" is now mostly known as the feature directorial debut of one George Walton Lucas Jr. (though it also came back in conversation when the best episode of "Andor" paid homage to it). The future Lucasfilm founder originally created this story of repressed emotions and stymied sexuality as a student film, but by the time it was reimagined as a feature, it had gained backing from Warner Bros.
Lucas' American Zoetrope co-founder Francis Ford Coppola also had faith in the movie, and served as one of its producers. "Thx 1138" starred Robert Duvall, then already known for his work on stage and television, not to mention in films like "To Kill A Mockingbird," "M*A*S*H," and "True Grit." Future "Halloween" actor Donald Pleasence co-starred, along with a then-unknown actress named Maggie McOmie.

As Dolly Parton’s career advanced, she took on new management. They helped her cross over from a strictly country crowd to more mainstream fans. Undoubtedly, her new manager helped boost her career. Still, her friends and family weren’t sure what to make of the change in Parton’s life. They believed her new management team brought her away from her roots.
Dolly Parton’s loved ones believed she had changed because of her new management
In 1977, Parton traveled to Sevierville, Tennessee, for their celebration of Dolly Parton Day. She greeted the crowd and chatted happily with people from school. While she was perfectly friendly, some attendees felt Parton had changed. She had a security team with her and left quickly after the show.
“I think by far there were more comments about it this time than ever before,” her school principal, Jack McMahan, said in the book Dolly by Alanna Nash.

Welcome to this week’s review of Nxt, right here on Nerdly. Spring Breakin’ is over so let’s see what went down in this week’s “standard” episode…
Match #1: Wes Lee def. Josh Briggs The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
The King of the West Side is back in Nxt as Wes Lee made his triumphant return to action against the big and bad Josh Briggs. Lee didn’t miss a beat in his return using his athleticism and his speed to disorient the much bigger Briggs, but he still took a couple of major hits from his bruising opponent. Briggs focused his attention on Lee’s back while Ivar made his way to commentary, but Lee dug deep and refused to give in. The former dominant North American Champion finally regained control before hitting a corkscrew moonsault and earning the win in his return.

As Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios continue their search for a director to take over from Jon Watts on Spider-Man 4, a new rumor is claiming that both studios may be in agreement on a filmmaker to take the helm of the highly-anticipated No Way Home sequel.
According to MyTimeToShineHello, James Wan is one of the directors in the mix to helm the movie. Whether this means he's actually had discussions about boarding the project is not clear.
Wan has previously directed the likes of The Conjuring, Malignant, Insidious, and both Aquaman movies for Warner Bros.

A couple of days ago, DC Studios and James Gunn shared a first look at David Corenswet suited up as Superman. It's been a while since we've seen a superhero movie costume divide opinions to such a large degree, but it's certainly not the first time.
The Man of Steel isn't the first character to take centre stage in a splashy sneak peek meant to get fans excited. While that usually works, there are occasions when fans hate what they see. Others, meanwhile, are quick to defend what usually amounts to a complete overhaul which takes place during the transition from page to screen.
This isn't a list of the worst superhero movie costumes...just those that divided opinions when they were first shown off to the world (and sometimes continue to do so to this very day).

Not to be confused with the 1986 Gary Paulsen novel that was on your fifth-grade reading list, Adam Green's 2007 slasher "Hatchet" was intended to be an homage to the plentiful stalk-and-kill movies from the 1980s. The first "Hatchet" takes place deep in the swamps of Louisana where feckless city-dwellers get lost while taking a swamp tour. They trade stories of Victor Crowley, a local kid with facial differences who, years ago, was trapped in a burning house set ablaze by prankster teens. Crowley was accidentally killed by his father when he recklessly used a hatchet to free him from the fire. Victor's spirit is now said to haunt the swamp and murder interlopers. Of course, Victor will appear to start the predicted murders.
Victor Crowley was played by stuntman Kane Hodder, perhaps best known for playing the masked killer Jason Voorhees in "Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood,...

Though the film was released several days ago, it can now boast of an impressive critical score.
If back in 2014 you were completely blown away (like lots of others) by John Green’s book adaptation of the same name The Fault in Our Stars starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, you’ve probably just found your next must-watch.
Now based on the 2017 novel, Turtles All the Way Down has just arrived on Max, but yet managed to get the highest rating that John Green’s adaptations ever received.
Starring Isabela Merced famous for her roles in movies like Dora and the Lost City of Gold or Madame Web, Turtles All the Way Down follows 16-year-old Aza Holmes who is trying to live her life to the fullest while also struggling with obsessive-compulsive disorder (Ocd).

The legacy of Michael Myers is as enduring as the chill that runs down your spine when you hear that iconic theme music. The Halloween franchise has been terrifying audiences for decades, and the idea of Myers making a comeback is both intriguing and, let’s face it, a bit unnerving. "Halloween Kills" might be one of the weaker installments in the long-running "Halloween" franchise, but one of its stars is anything but. The new book "Halloween: The Official Making of Halloween, Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends" includes a whole bunch of great behind-the-scenes stories about the new trilogy's production, including one about "Halloween Kills" actor Kyle Richards. Richards, a former child actress who is perhaps now best known as a castmate on "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills," played Michael Myers survivor Lindsey in the recent David Gordon Green movie (a role she originated in the 1978 classic), and apparently went above and beyond when it came to the film's stunt scenes.
In one scene, according to Abbie Bernstein's book, Richards was tasked with smacking the seemingly invincible killer known as The Shape with a sack of foam meant to be a stand-in for a bag of bricks. The foam...

The episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw covering The Invitation (2015) was Written by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Narrated by Kier Gomes, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Horror doesn’t always have to be jump scare after jump scare or a non-stop gore fest. It doesn’t have to have Aliens, Terminators, or Predators to say nothing of any of the other monsters we’ve seen over the years. Movies that don’t include those coveted horror checklists typically get lumped into the thriller category like Silence of the Lambs or even Get Out. Funny how those are the movies that the Globes and Oscars want to award. Without a shadow of a doubt horror films that can be labeled something a little more friendly to draw more audience demographics or get better ink in reviews. I’m here...

What an excellent day for an exorcism.
The Blumhouse film “The Exorcist: Believer” will make its streaming debut on Peacock starting on December 1.
Directed by David Gordon Green and co-written by Green and Peter Sattler, “The Exorcist: Believer” is a direct sequel to the 1973 classic “The Exorcist” and returned star Ellen Burstyn to the franchise for the first time since she received a Best Actress nomination for the original film.
“At first, she was very skeptical,” Green told A.frame, the academy’s editorial website. “Her immediate answer was, ‘Hell no.’ I think people have approached her many times about sequels, so I said, ‘If you won’t be in my movie, at least be my friend.’”
Green told the outlet he and Burstyn then began discussing his intentions for the film – particularly his approach to the material.
“Ellen and I spoke and shared literature and philosophies and had a few social conversations.

The 2000s were full of remakes of beloved horror franchises. "Nightmare on Elm Street," "Friday the 13th," "Halloween," "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," and many more were reinvented for a new generation. There were enough of these that the idea of rebooting horror franchises became the main satire target of "Scream 4" — the best of that franchise's sequels. But despite how many of these there were, most failed to leave a lasting impact.
This is why it was so surprising that "Halloween" would find such big success with its second reboot — technically, it's third, if you count "Halloween H20: 20 Years Later." David Gordon Green reinvented the classic horror movie in a legacy sequel that served as a love letter to fans. Lord and Miller, the producers behind the animated hits Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and The Lego Movie franchise, took to X on Tuesday night to reveal that they had seen Coyote and attested to its quality.
“I saw Coyote Vs Acme and it’s delightful,” Miller tweeted. “Funny, charming, good physical comedy timing, with a surprising amount of heart. I hope several studios go after it so the world can see all the good work people did.”

With Road Runner-like speed, Warner Bros. Discovery has reversed its decision to bury Coyote vs. Acme.
The studio will now allow director Dave Green to shop his live-action/animation hybrid movie to other potential buyers instead of shelving the project for a tax write-off, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Amazon is said to be a contender, with screenings for potential buyers taking place this month. Puck was first to report the news of the reversal.
The move comes days after the The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Coyote vs. Acme would become Warners third already-shot film to get shelved after previously nixing nearly completed projects Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt in August 2022.
After Batgirl and Scoob! were dumped, a group of filmmakers with business at the studio started a text chain — a support group of sorts — to share their hopes and their anxieties, as well as encouragement and tips for navigating the studio.

Warner Bros. has reportedly reversed course on the Coyote vs. Acme movie starring John Cena. According to Puck News, the studio will now allow the filmmakers to shop the project to other distributors after shelving it for a tax write-off just last week.
Puck News’ Matthew Belloni reports that the abrupt decision was made by Warner film executives Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy alongside new head of animation Bill Damaschke after online backlash from Coyote vs. Acme director Dave Green and composer Steven Price, as well as the animation community overall.
Amazon is one of the contenders to pick up Coyote vs. Acme, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Screenings will take place for potential buyers this month.
“For three years, I was lucky enough to make a movie about Wile E. Coyote, the most persistent, passionate, and resilient character of all time,” Green wrote on Twitter about the James Gunn-produced film.

(Welcome to Animation Celebration, a recurring feature where we explore the limitless possibilities of animation as a medium. In this edition: "Blue Eye Samurai.")
When's the last time you watched something and felt compelled to fist pump at the TV? For most, it was probably a favorite sports team winning the big game. But for me, it was the first episode of the new Netflix series, "Blue Eye Samurai." During the premiere of the show (attended by /Film's Jenna Bush-Henderson), it was revealed that the seed for the new animated series from Michael Green and Amber Noizumi was first planted about 15 years ago after the show creators welcomed the birth of their daughter. She was born with blue eyes, and Noizumi, who is half-Japanese, found herself wondering, "Why am I so excited that my daughter has blue eyes? What's the big deal about that? This post contains spoilers for "Blue Eye Samurai" season 1.
In the new adult animated Netflix series "Blue Eye Samurai," Mizu (Maya Erskine), a young half-Japanese warrior, has to navigate a world which doesn't accept her for who she is. Set in the Edo period in Japan where white people were banned from the country, Mizu has blue eyes that betray who she is to people who cannot accept it. To get revenge on those who have wronged her, Mizu disguises herself as a man, and teaches herself to become a master sword wielder.
The series examines power, revenge, and gender expectations, and has character twists and turns you won't see coming ... yet which feel exactly right. "Blue Eye Samurai" comes to us from writers (and married couple) Michael Green and Amber Noizumi. I got a chance to chat with Green and Noizumi about Mizu's choices, creating an R-rated animated series,...

The feature reportedly completed filming last year.
Warner Bros has shelved completed feature Coyote vs Acme, with the studio taking an estimated $30m tax write-down by not releasing the project, according to reports.

With this new direction, we have made the difficult decision not to move forward with Coyote vs Acme. We have tremendous respect for the filmmakers, casts and crew, and are grateful for their contributions to the film.

The financial axe of Warner Bros. has fallen on another film. Following in the shelved footsteps of Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt last year, the studio has decided to put another film — this one finished and ready to release — into its vault. The latest victim of the baffling, if monetarily lucrative procedure is Coyote Vs. Acme, which stars John Cena.

The live-action/animated film follows Wile E. Coyote, who after Acme products fail him one too many times in his dogged pursuit of the Roadrunner, decides to hires a billboard lawyer to sue the Acme Corporation.

As of 12:01 a.m. on November 9, 2023, the SAG-AFTRA strike is officially over. The actors’ guild has come to terms with TV and film studios, ending a 118-day work stoppage.
The agreement still needs to be ratified by SAG-AFTRA’s national board, but the hardest work has been done. Actors will get pay increases, protections from AI, and streaming participation bonuses, and the studios will be able to turn their production pipelines back on.
“We have arrived at a contract that will enable SAG-AFTRA members from every category to build sustainable careers,” the union wrote in an email. “Many thousands of performers now and into the future will benefit from this work.”
For the acting community, there are plenty of lessons to be learned from the longest labor stoppage in SAG-AFTRA history. In other industries, the takeaways are a bit murkier. As actors, writers, and Hollywood studios argued over new terms,...

In another maneuver by the David Zaslav-run Warner Bros Discovery to kill movies, we hear on very good authority that Warner Bros will not be releasing the hybrid live-action/animated Coyote vs. Acme, with the conglom taking an estimated $30M write-down on the $70M production. We understand the write-down for the pic was applied to the recently reported Q3.
This reps the third time that Zaslav’s Warner Bros has pulled the plug on a movie greenlighted by the previous Warner Media administration, the other two being the Max-destined Batgirl and the animated Scoob Holiday Haunt!

A little over a year after the shelving of Batgirl sent shockwaves throughout Hollywood, Warner Bros. is putting another of its films in the studio vault.
Warners no longer plans to release Coyote vs. Acme, a live-action, CG animation hybrid that completed principal photography last year in New Mexico. The move follows veteran animation executive Bill Damaschke taking over Warner Animation Group earlier this year.
“For three years, I was lucky enough to make a movie about Wile E. Coyote, the most persistent, passionate, and resilient character of al time,” filmmaker Dave Green wrote on X after this story initially published. “I was surrounded by a brilliant team, who poured their souls into this project. … Along the ride, we were embraced by test audiences who rewarded us with fantastic scores.”
The feature, which sources believe cost around $72 million to make, had key Warners talent involved in front of the camera and behind the scenes.

Also in the cast are Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), John Malkovich (Billions), Stephanie Suganami (Power Book II: Ghost), Young Mazino (Beef), Tatanka Means (Killers of the Flower Moon), and The White Lotus Emmy winner Murray Bartlett. A24 is producing and financing the film, and will be handling its global distribution. Opus is being produced by Collin Creighton and Brad Weston of Makeready, Poppy Hanks and Jelani Johnson of Macro Film Studios, and Josh Bachove.

Set in 17th-century Edo-period Japan, the new Netflix series "Blue Eye Samurai" follows Mizu (voiced by "Pen15" star Maya Erskine), a mixed-race master of the sword who lives a life in disguise seeking to deliver revenge. "It's an Edo-period tale of revenge — Kill Bill meets Yentl," co-creator Amber Noizumi told Tudum. During this time period, borders to Japan were closed to other countries, with the exception of illegal trade. Knowing that there were only four white men in Japan at the time of her conception, Mizu decides to track them down and kill them in the hopes of enacting revenge against the man who made her a "creature of shame." Her quest requires her to hide not just her blue eyes but also her gender, because as is narrated in the series' trailer, "Under the law, revenge is a luxury for men. Women must be practical."

TikTok’s $1 billion creator fund is shutting down. Here’s how creators are getting paid from now on.
TikTok is shutting down the $1 billion fund it’s been using to pay creators since 2020.
Beginning Dec. 16, 2023, creators in the U.S., U.K., Germany, and France will no longer receive payouts from the fund. Per The Verge, creators in Italy and Spain will apparently continue to receive payouts, though we’re not sure how long that will continue.
This shutdown isn’t unexpected; the creator fund was only intended to be a three-year program, and in those three years, its fatal flaw has become more and more pronounced. TikTok launched it as a static pool of money—$1 billion. $200 million of that was earmarked for U.S. creators, which means that over the last three years, TikTok has had around $550,000 per day to divvy up between all U.S. creators combined.
So, as more stateside creators made more high-quality content and were approved for the fund, the amount they made...

David Gordon Green's 2022 slasher film "Halloween Ends" is an unusual entry in the series in many ways. In it, the vicious masked serial killer Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney) has been living in a sewer and stays out of the film's central action for the bulk of its running time. "Ends," instead, focuses largely on a character named Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell), a man who, two years ago, accidentally killed the young boy he was babysitting. Green envisioned Corey's hometown town of Haddonfield, Illinois as a bitter and wounded place, full of spiteful, hurt people who cannot heal from the murderous damage that Michael caused way back in 1978, as well as his return in 2018. Every citizen is bitter, angry, and paranoid. Corey is bullied and picked on, unable to outlive his mistake.
When Corey wanders into Michael's sewer (he was fleeing bullies), he finds Michael and a strange transference occurs.
