Hooked by A.C. Wise
Type: Novel
Publisher: Titan Books
Release date: July 12
Den of Geek says: Wise’s previous spin on Peter Pan brought eldritch fantasy, LGBT community and a spooky interpretation of the story that both interrogates and acknowledges the childhood appeal of the original. We’re eager to see whether the sequel delivers the same.
Publisher’s summary: Captain James Hook, the immortal pirate of Neverland, has died a thousand times. Drowned, stabbed by Peter Pan’s sword, eaten by the beast swimming below the depths, yet James was resurrected every time by one boy’s dark imagination. Until he found a door in the sky, an escape. And he took the chance no matter the cost.

Pan
Written by Jason Fuchs
Directed by Joe Wright
USA, 2015
Peter Pan gets the Star Wars treatment by way of Baz Luhrmann in Joe Wright’s Pan, an attempt at putting a somewhat original spin on the Peter Pan story. In true Hollywood style, however, the film is so hampered by studio notes that it almost completely collapses underneath the weight. The result is a broadly entertaining, visually stunning but somewhat problematic adventure story that tries to marry the source material with new ideas that is not as successful as Wright must have hoped.
This origin tale casts J.M. Barrie’s titular hero (played here by Levi Miller) as a chosen one, destined to unite the human and fairy tribes of Neverland against the evil pirate Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman), who is using child labour to mine for ‘pixum’, fairy dust that has magical abilities. Of course, Peter can’t do it alone,...

Peter Pan is one of those films that we’re going to live with, in one form or another, every few years… forever. Knowing this, when news hits of another one, we put on a brave face and hope for something that won’t overly disappoint. Well, many of us also hope that it won’t aim for a completely crazy spin that has very little to do with the original story.
Then Joe Wright comes along, and flying ships are turning sideways, Hook is something of a good guy, and Hugh Jackman is Blackbeard.
Now you wonder if you weren’t wishing for the wrong thing all along.
Pan is closing in, and there’s a new of images from the production that really sell the fantasy. Take a look.

Jm Barrie's classic children's story gets Harry Potter-ised in Anna Karenina director Joe Wright's Pan, an origins story that seeks to fill in the backstory blanks for The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up.
In the revisionist Pan, Peter, like Harry, is an orphan boy whisked off to a fantastical realm and forced to confront the idea that he's a mythical 'chosen one'. If Barrie inspired Jk Rowling, then here the favour is returned wholesale as screenwriter Jason Fuchs's take is pure Potter. Those Hogwarts echoes are heard loud and clear, but fortunately Pan has enough magic fairy dust sprinkled throughout to keep it from feeling like a complete knock-off.
That said, Pan is a hugely frustrating film because when it's good it's really good. The opening stretch, for one, is gloriously giddy stuff as Peter (newcomer Levi Miller with a "crikey guvnah" accent) gets swiped from an orphanage,...

Warner Bros. has released 4 new posters for their upcoming adventure film, Pan, spotlighting the main characters from the movie. There’s Hugh Jackman (X-Men: Days Of Future Past) as the villainous pirate Blackbeard, Rooney Mara (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) as Tiger Lilly, Levi Miller as “the boy who wouldn’t grow up” himself, and Garret Hedlund (Tron Legacy) as James Hook – which is an appropriate name for a guy who will eventually lose a hand and have it replaced with… a hook.
Director Joe Wright (Hanna, Pride And Prejudice, Atonement) has promised fans a very different Peter Pan story, and from what we know thanks to the plot summary below, it definitely seems to be a fresh take on the early days of these characters.

Warner Bros. has released a brand new trailer for Joe Wright's upcoming Pan film, reimagining the origin of the popular children's character, infusing it with more action and a prophetic slant to it. Come inside to check out the new trailer.
Pan was supposed to hit in just a couple months, but WB decided to push it back to an October release slot. Fortunately, people looking forward to the film can still get some relief thanks to this new trailer that hit:
I'm going to be honest here...I'm not digging the trailer. I wasn't all that thrilled when the first trailer dropped either, but something about this film isn't making a connection with me. It's missing something, and feels a tad too much like the fairy tale live-action films Disney has been putting out. The sense of tension and overall purpose isn't there in this trailer, even though...

Warner Bros. decided to delay their upcoming Peter Pan feature, Pan, from a July release to Oct. 9, hoping to catch a wider audience later in the year rather than compete with the large amount of summer releases. Not a bad move in my estimation as it seems you either need a big franchise name like Mission: Impossible, a superhero movie or a hard bit of counter-programming, a la Pitch Perfect 2, to really survive the summer movie season nowadays. At least if we're talking a movie with some dollars behind it and word is Pan cost the studio $150 million. Directed by Joe Wright (Atonement), Pan is a wholly original adventure about the beginnings of the J.M. Barrie character with Levi Miller taking on the title role as a mischievous 12-year-old boy who, one night, is whisked away from the orphanage where he lives and spirited off to a fantastical world of pirates,...

The boy may be able to fly, but will the movie take off?
The first trailer for "Pan" hit the internet today and it's drop-dead gorgeous. The visuals are breathtaking - from the flying ship above to the lush Neverland scenery to the kooky costumes.
Peter (newcomer Levi Miller) is an orphan who's kidnapped by the pirate Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman) to a fantastical land. There, he also meets Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara) and James Hook (Garrett Hedlund), who believe he's the answer to an ancient prophesy that foretells the defeat of the pirates. Other than those broad strokes, it's hard to get a real sense of the movie. It veers from earnestness to mystical mumbo-jumbo. It definitely wants you to feel like it's the next "Harry Potter" with the orphan setup, the entrance into an amazing new world, and fantastical creatures - Peter is The Boy Who Can Fly, rather than The Boy Who Lived.

A second Pan trailer has been released, and while I'm still not sold on the film, I will say this new trailer is an improvement over the first one. The latest look at director Joe Wright's Peter Pan origin movie explores different areas of Neverland that didn't appear in the original trailer, and contains a bunch of other new footage, although it again features Garrett Hedlund's James Hook getting punched in the face. For some reason the music in the...

“We wanted to give ‘Pan’ the space to extend its theatrical run, so taking it out of the cluttered summer season made the most sense. Kwan Vanderberg stated:

Warner Bros. has released a new poster and a few new pictures for their upcoming movie Pan from director Joe Wright (Atonement, Hanna) and starring Hugh Jackman as the pirate Blackbeard and Levi Miller as the titular Peter Pan. Described as a "wholly original adventure about the beginnings of the beloved characters created by J.M. Barrie," the film centers on Peter (Miller), a mischievous 12-year-old boy with an irrepressible rebellious streak, but in the bleak London orphanage where he has lived his whole life those qualities do not exactly fly. Then one incredible night, Peter is whisked away from the orphanage and spirited off to a fantastical world of pirates, warriors and fairies called Neverland. There, he finds amazing adventures and fights life-or-death battles while trying to uncover the secret of his mother, who left him at the orphanage so long ago, and his rightful place in this magical land.

London, England. Since J.M. Barrie birthed the character in 1902, Peter Pan has been imagined in myriad forms. He's been featured on-stage in plays and a musical. He's been the focus of live-action movies and animation, of wild reimagination and strict Barrie-inspired adherence. Everybody has a first image of Peter Pan that springs to mind, whether it's Disney, Mary Martin or even Robin Williams. It's a property accompanied by expectations, which makes it familiar ground for director Joe Wright. "I have a bit of a habit of that because, you know, 'Pride and Prejudice' was kind of quite close to a lot of people’s hearts. And 'Atonement' was as well and 'Anna Karenina' was as well," Wright says. "So I try not to really think about it and really just make a film that is representative of my own feelings about the book and my relationship with the book.

We've been to big movie sets before -- huge productions with sprawling casts and countless extras and the kind of sets that seem to go on forever - but we've never seen anything like the sets for "Pan," the new adaptation of J.M. Barrie's "Peter Pan" constructed, with whimsical delight, by "Hanna" and "Pride & Prejudice" director Joe Wright. This thing was massive.
The movie stars Garrett Hedlund, Rooney Mara, and Hugh Jackman (more on all of them in a minute), plus young Levi Miller as Peter, and the sets were so insanely massive that many of them had to be constructed in what was described as the largest freestanding structure in Europe, a hanger where blimps were built during the second World War. Like we said: massive.
And if this movie is flying under people's radar, mostly due to the glut of flashier, more super-heroic fare bombarding multiplexes this summer,...

The middle of Spring actually means a new selection of summer blockbusters to look forward to, and with a ton of big-budget films slated to come out within the next few months and beyond, the summer of 2015 looks like one to remember.
From the new Mad Max (which is already on our end-of -year top ten list event though we haven’t yet seen it) to Avengers, Poltergeists, male strippers, talking teddy bears, and a reboot of the Jurassic Park franchise, this summer’s trips to the theaters will be jam-packed with sequels and new tales. From May 1st right through to the end of August, some of the movies on our list could wind up on year-end “best of” lists or even receive some Oscar talk by December.
Grab your calendar, because Wamg has a rundown of this summer’s films we’re most excited about, so check them out below!

For the second consecutive year, Warner Bros. Pictures International has exceeded the coveted $3 billion mark at the international box office. This benchmark comes on the heels of the release of The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies, a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, which surpassed $400 million at the international box office this weekend and is still going strong.
Nine Warner Bros. Pictures films have exceeded $100 million internationally, topped by Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (with Paramount Pictures), which has taken in an astounding $467 million outside of the U.S. to date, and Godzilla (with Legendary Pictures), which has earned $327 million overseas.
Four titles – Doug Liman’s Edge Of Tomorrow (with Village Roadshow Pictures), Phil Lord & Christopher Miller’s The Lego Movie (also with Village Roadshow Pictures), and Noam Murro and Zack Snyder’s 300: Rise Of An Empire (with Legendary), along with the 2014 spillover grosses from The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug...

It’s been 11 years since we last saw Peter Pan. In 2003 P.J. Hogan made a surprisingly exciting and faithful adaptation of Peter Pan — one that really delved into the sexual subtext of J.M. Barrie’s text — but it didn’t exactly set the world on fire. Since it wasn’t much of a hit, that means nobody is complaining about already bringing the character back to the big screen. Joe Wright’s Pan isn’t a remake or reboot, though, but a prequel. Pan stars Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard, Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily, and Garrett Hedlund as the innocent James Hook (who one day, of course, becomes Captain Hook). The trailer begins with an introduction to Pan (Levi Miller), an orphan during WWII. One night him and his buddies are kidnapped by pirates disguised as clowns, led by Blackbeard. How are legends born?
The first trailer for Pan gives us some insight into the origin story of the fabled Peter Pan and his nemesis Captain Hook in a colourful new world brought to life by Atonement director Joe Wright.
Newcomer Levi Miller stars as the orphan Peter who is spirited away to Neverland. While in the lush and tropical world of mermaids, pirates, and magic, Peter comes face-to-face with James Hook (Garret Hedlund) and Princess Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara). Before Peter can truly discover his destiny and the fairytale we are all familiar with, he must first face a foe in the form of the dreaded pirate Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman).
Jackman looks like he borrowed a page from Johnny Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean playbook on how to be a swashbuckler and there’s no denying the versatile actor is having a ball with the role. It’s...

The world of Joe Wright’s “Pan” has been unveiled in the first trailer for his reinterpretation of Jm Barrie’s clasic children’s novel. Wright has imagined a totally different origin story for the boy who never grew up. He’s an orphan, as played by newcomer Levi Miller, in World War II, abandoned by his mother (Amanda Seyfried) for mysterious reasons. One night, Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman) and his gang kidnap him, along with hundreds of other little boys, and take them to Neverland. There, he makes friends with James Hook (Garrett Hedlund) and Princess Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara). Quite a change from [...]

Hook
Written by James V. Hart, Nick Castle, Malia Scotch Marmo, and J. M. Barrie
Directed by Steven Spielberg
USA, 1991
Steven Spielberg is known the world over for creating genuine movie magic. From his blockbuster splash Jaws in 1975 up until his 2012 biopic Lincoln, Spielberg is certainly a gifted filmmaker. Very few auteurs are still work today but Spielberg keeps banging out films that dazzle the senses and leave an everlasting impression on the viewer. However, some of Spielberg’s films haven’t achieved the recognition and respect they deserve. There are certain films that this movie master made that didn’t quite achieve a high status. One such film is 1991’s Hook, a fantasy adventure which didn’t really score well with critics but filled children of the 90s with joy, innocence, and wonder.
The film follows middle-aged lawyer Peter Banning (Robin Williams), a bitter individual who has forgotten who he is.

Tinker Bell is having a moment. Not the red-faced huff of a moment we're used to seeing the feisty tinker fairy have, but a very A-list celeb kind of moment. "Mad Men's" Christina Hendricks and "Thor" star Tom Hiddleston have joined the fun in "Tinker Bell and the Pirate Fairy" as rogue fairy Zarina and a future Captain Hook, respectively. The result is getting touted as the best direct-to-video sequel Disney has made yet -- quite an endorsement for the littlest member of the mouse house.
Maybe what makes Tinker Bell such an awesome character for families with young children is how her imperfection is embraced (that angry red face!) and not something to be corrected. It's Tinkerbell's jealousy over Wendy that establishes a bond between the tiny fairy and the revenge-driven Captain James Hook. In "Pirate Fairy," Tinker Bell and James -- the future Captain Hook -- meet...

Despite a line-up that boasts of Hugh Jackman, Garrett Hedlund, and Rooney Mara, there has been one conspicuous absence in the cast list for Joe Wright’s Pan: Peter Pan himself. Wright has been searching high and low for a newcomer to play the titular part of the boy who never grew up, and now it appears that he’s found his Peter Pan in the form of Levi Miller.
The young actor will take on the role of a boy swept away from London to Neverland, where he encounters the dangerous pirate Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman) and makes friends (we think) with his eventual nemesis James Hook (Garrett Hedlund). Where the Native American Princess Tiger Lily (played by a decidedly not-Native American Rooney Mara) fits into all this has yet to be seen, but chances are that Peter will have to save the maiden at some point in the proceedings.

Director Joe Wright’s big budget re-imagining of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan has been slowly but surely gathering its cast together. While the titular role in Pan still needs to be filled, the other parts have pretty much all been filled. We have Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard, Garrett Hedlund in the part of James Hook, and now Rooney Mara is in talks to play Tiger Lily.
In the original Barrie tale, Tiger Lily is a Native American Princess whom Peter rescues from the clutches of Captain Hook. But this is a re-imagining, with Hook at least beginning the film as basically a decent guy (the villainous role is filled by Blackbeard). So Tiger Lily need not be captured or, if Mara is cast, need she be Native American. In fact, we’re not quite certain how this character will figure into Wright’s Pan.

Peter Pan found himself back in the headlines this week with the news that Warner Bros is launching a nationwide casting search to find a new boy who'll never grow up. The Joe Wright-directed film will explore the origins of Jm Barrie's character with Hugh Jackman as pirate Blackbeard and Garrett Hedlund playing a young James Hook.
Digital Spy takes a look at five other movies that have used Barrie as inspiration to create some movie magic.
Peter Pan (1953)
There had been a Pan movie before (a silent film released in 1924), but this Disney-produced offering proved to be a big hit in the early '50s. Turning Barrie's acclaimed play into an animated musical, the Disney version even spawned a sequel (2002's Return to Neverland) and a spinoff series revolving around pixie Tinker Bell (more on that later).

Tinker Bell is one of Disney’s great mascots, a symbol of the enchantment that has illuminated the studio for decades. However, having been involved in a number of unmemorable spin-off’s, sadly we have another one to add to the list, as Peggy Holmes presents The Pirate Fairy. Though managing to comprise a voice cast consisting of Christina Hendricks and Tom Hiddleston, we spend too much time referencing its originator, Peter Pan, feeling too contrived in the process. If there is one thing you should try and avoid, is to draw too many comparisons to one of the greatest animations ever created, as it seeks only in highlighting this very film’s shortcomings.
Hendricks voices Zarina, an enthusiastic and inventive fairy, who is determined to discover the true power and potential of pixie dust, and create new colours and formulas to see what the magical powder is truly capable of.

Wales’ great start helped them hold off a courageous Italian fightback in the opening game of the Six Nations in Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium today.
First-half tries from backs Alex Cuthbert and Scott Williams, combined with some very neat kicking from full-back Leigh Halfpenny had the reigning champions 17-3 ahead at the break, as they commenced their quest for a three-in-a-row in the Northern Hemisphere’s premier annual rugby competition.
However, Italy fought back in the second half with an early try from debutant and Rbs Six Nations Man of the Match Michele Campagnaro.
Walses looked comfortable at 60 minutes, and Gatland made a raft of changes, presumably resting players before next week’s crucial clash with Ireland in Dublin.

Who’s the fairest fairy of them all?
In Disneytoon Studios newest Tinkerbell vehicle, The Pirate Fairy, the airborne ladies of Pixie Hollow must retrieve their stolen pixie dust, if they ever want to fly again. The dastardly culprit? Zarina, a fairy with an odd hairdo (voiced by Christina Hendricks). Leading the Pixie Hollow fairies is Tinkerbell (Mae Whitman), who is determined to restore her town’s flying abilities, but finds trouble when her fairy crew encounters some raucous pirates. One of those pirate voices may sound charmingly familiar — Tom Hiddleston voices the boy who would become Captain James Hook.

Though he was once reportedly in the running to direct Fifty Shades of Grey, thankfully Joe Wright decided to wait for something else. Just recently we heard that Wright was going to team with 12 Years a Slave star Chiwetel Ejiofor for an adaptation of their stage production A Season in the Congo, but he's also setting up a classic fantasy on his future slate as well. Deadline has word that Wright is currently in talks to direct Pan, an adaptation of J.M. Barrie's iconic Peter Pan fairytale written by Jason Fuchs (Ice Age: Continental Drift). However, it's not yet clear how this take is any different from the other adaptations. Disney had an adaptation of Peter and the Starcatchers in development last summer, and there was also a dark contemporary thriller take on the familiar characters was in the works with Aaron Eckhart playing a good guy police captain James Hook,...

Hiddleston reprises his Avengers role as the evil Loki in Thor: The Dark World, and will also lend his voice to Disney's Tinker Bell and the Pirate Fairy to play Captain Hook.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor suggested that villains are always more "complex" than their heroic counterparts.
"I think villains, really great villains, are always the most complex," he said. "Because in their heart, there is always some kind of deeply complicated psychology that you need to unpack and un-knit and understand."
Hiddleston also expressed excitement to be playing a villain as legendary as Captain Hook in Tinker Bell and the Pirate Fairy.
