It all started well in Malaikottai Vaaliban. The arid landscape, the aesthetic color palette, characters popping out of carefully crafted set pieces, and the striking background score, reminiscent of Ennio Morricone – it was evident Lijo Jose Pellissery had been watching too many spaghetti westerns. Pellissery, known for his breakout indie Angamaly Diaries, kept his inspirations intact as he introduced Mohanlal, who embodies Malaikottai Vaaliban, a mighty wrestler and wandering warrior. The film opens with a satisfying sequence. An ox cart slowly rumbles through the deserted landscape of a village. A young man walking along the ox cart announces with the same vigor as a wrestling announcer that the cart belongs to Malaikottai Vaaliban. Then, a chain of micro-events unfolds – a teenage boy running, a wrestler getting angry, his seductive wife laughing in his face, and people gluing up in an open field like in a Fevicol advertisement. In a move not attempted by actors at San Diego Comic-Con, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Trainspotting actor Ewan McGregor took the stage at the Javits Center today at New York Comic-Con to discuss himself, not struck work, during what is the 91st day of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
“This is the first thing like this I’ve done, and it’s been a big decision to do it, but I really wanted to take part,” said McGregor, who also didn’t represent or speak of any studio during the onstage convo.
“It’s difficult for us to be up here and not be allowed to talk about our actual films,” he added. “I’m sure you would want to hear about [them], so I apologize for that. But that’s just the way we have to do it, I suppose.”

Richard Dreyfuss criticized the Academy Awards’ new representation and inclusion standards for Best Picture nominees going into effect in 2024 during an interview on Friday for PBS’ Firing Line with Margaret Hoover.
“They make me vomit,” the Oscar winner said in response to Hoover’s query regarding the upcoming eligibility requirement. He emphasized film as “an art form,” which to him, means “no one should be telling me as an artist that I have to give in to the latest, most current idea of what morality is. What are we risking? Are we really risking hurting people’s feelings? You can’t legislate that.” Dreyfuss then offered his own, alternative solution, saying, “You have to let life be life. I’m sorry, I don’t think there is a minority or majority in the country that has to be catered to like that.”
He continued by praising the late Laurence Olivier...

Cate Blanchett has received a symphony of praise from critics for her starring role in Todd Fields’ “Tar”and as a strong-willed orchestra conductor. Lydia Tar speaks her mind whether making a fool out of a conducting student at Juilliard or threatening a young girl bullying her daughter at school. But Tar’s diva-tude has nothing on the Sir Alfred de Carter (Rex Harrison) the famed conductor with an ego as big as the Ritz in writer/director/producer Preston Sturges’ hilarious dark 1948 comedy “Unfaithfully Yours.”
Sturges had had an incredible run at Paramount with his brilliant comedies: 1940’s “The Great McGinty,” for which he won the original screenplay Oscar and “Christmas in July”; 1941’s “The Lady Eve” and “Sullivan’s Travels”; 1942’s “The Palm Beach Story”; and 1944’s “The Miracle at Morgan’s Creek” and “Hail the Conquering Hero.” But then came many clashes with Paramount executives, the 1944 critical...
