Miami — Few announcements at a vibrant Natpe Miami trade fair this week are weightier than the strategic multi-year co-production partnership unveiled Thursday between Telemundo Intl. Studios and Movistar +, two of the biggest production players in the Spanish-speaking world, to produce premium limited series for the U.S. and international markets. Following, 5 Takes:
1.A Sign Of The Times
If the international business at this year’s Natpe had a mantra, it was “production alliance.” In first day’s news flow on Tuesday, Mediapro and Televisa announced a three-year. three series, co-production pact. One day later, Turner Latin America confirmed three series with the Salinas Group’s Dopamine. Multi-series arrangements avoid the need to negotiate title by title at a time when demand for high-end series far outstrips demand.
2.Serving One Of The World’S Biggest Burgeoning Language Markets
15 years ago, Chinese movies performed better in Latin America than Spanish films.

Adapting to an ever-more digital world, if Latin America’s scripted series industry could choose an early 2018 mantra, it might well be “co-production.”
Co-produced by Fox Networks Groups Latin America (Fngla) and Mexico’s La Corriente del Golfo, Gael Garcia Bernal’s “Here on Earth” is competing in Canneseries, the Cannes Intl. Series Festival, which is unspooling its first edition April 4-11 during Mip.
Among Latin America’s biggest free-to-air series hits this year are “Sandro,” co-produced by Telefe and Telefilms’ the Magic Eye, and Globo’s “13 Days Away From the Sun,” co-produced with Fernando Meirelles’ o2 Filmes.
One of Latin America’s largest TV deals to go down this year was a double-backed co-production alliance between Turner Latin America and Spain’s Mediapro, announced at Natpe.
Meanwhile, the top Latino content producers pinpoint co-production as a key growth strategy. Telemundo Global Studios aims “to co-produce with companies with a lot of experience,...

Mexico City -- NBC Universal's Telemundo has inked a multi-year output deal with Colombia's Caracol Television, giving the U.S. Spanish-language broadcaster exclusive access to programming from one of Latin America's top content producers.
Caracol has produced such hits as the telenovela "Pedro El Escamoso," the mafia-themed series "El Cartel de los Sapos" and the popular soap "Sin Tetas no hay Paraiso," which Telemundo adapted for the U.S. market.
Under the deal, Telemundo positions itself as Caracol's exclusive broadcaster for the U.S. market. A Telemundo spokesman said the agreement extends to online and cable TV opportunities. Caracol produces about 4,000 hours of content a year and has a library of more than 10,000 hours of programming.
"We believe that with this deal we will not only successfully program their content in our network, but will also develop great international projects," said Marcos Santana, president of Telemundo International.
Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Telemundo, the No. 2 U.S. network targeting Hispanics, will for the first time premiere in full a primetime novela across the network's digital platforms via a hybrid distribution model before the serial's broadcast debut.
Leveraging MSN technology, Telemundo's programming move centers on "Las Aparicio," a 120-episode soap that will launch in August at Telemundo.com on a new HD broadband player developed specifically for Telemundo and supported by Microsoft.
The novela revolves around a family with three daughters -- a divorcee, a widow and a single woman -- without men in their lives.
"It's a very modern tale about contemporary Hispanic women and how they juggle family, work and love," Telemundo executive vp Peter Blacker said. "It's 'Sex and the City' meets 'Lipstick Jungle' -- but with a decidedly Latin twist."

Cannes -- Bolivian telenovela pioneer Marcos Santana kicked off Mipcom's Focus on Spain day Tuesday with a salute to his adopted country.
The president of Telemundo Internacional told audiences how proud he was of Spain's achievements in both television and film which, combined, saw exports grow 50% between 2001 and 2007, to reach several billion dollars.
Santana provided a brief overview of the Spanish industry, which until 1989 had only one channel, the public broadcaster Rtve, which hosted a networking lunch between the Spanish-themed sessions.
At the lunch, Madrid-based Grupo Zzj's commercial director Talinka Martinez Delgado-Corredor spoke of the advantages of sharing a common language with most of Latin America in exporting product.
Providing more background on the growing industry, a Havas Media report unveiled here suggested that the country is entering "a fiercely competitive age," thanks to the growth of digital broadcaster Tdt, the spread of broadband, Ppv channels and the popularity of video games.
