The 38th Santa Barbara International Film Festival, which will take place from Feb. 8 through Feb. 18, has already announced an impressive lineup of screenings and a star-studded roster of actors and actresses who will attend career-retrospective tributes at the fest, including Cate Blanchett (whose evening I will be moderating on Feb. 10), Brendan Fraser, Angela Bassett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson.
On Monday, the fest revealed that a vast majority of this year’s Oscar-nominated directors, writers and producers will also be in attendance to participate on special panels.
At the Arlington Theatre on the evening of Feb. 17, three of the five best director nominees — Tár’s Todd Field, Everything Everywhere All at Once’s Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert and The Banshees of Inisherin’s Martin McDonagh — will be on hand to collect the fest’s Outstanding Directors of the Year Award following separate and group conversations, which...

The film “Introducing, Selma Blair” documents the 2019 stem cell transplant Blair underwent in order to heal her multiple sclerosis — and though the two-month-long medical process is harrowing, the movie both illuminates and entertains. As captured by first-time feature director Rachel Fleit, Blair is an open book; she’s charming, vulnerable, insightful and hilarious.
During an interview with Variety at her Los Angeles home in late August, Blair was much the same, and detailed the mysterious symptoms — undiagnosed until Aug. 2018, when she was 46 — that have plagued her for her whole life, as well as her decision to be the subject of a documentary. After a limited theatrical release, “Introducing, Selma Blair” is now available to stream on Discovery Plus.
In the interview, Blair talked extensively about her late mother, who died in May 2020, and who emerges as a character in the movie through Blair’s anecdotes about her, often accompanied by her vivid imitation.

How far ahead is Joaquin Phoenix in Oscars race after ‘Joker’ windfalls at BAFTAs and Golden Globes?
It’s been a great week for Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”) leading up to the Oscar nominations on Monday, January 13. But does he have Best Actor already locked up? Not quite, but he’s getting there.
From the very beginning “Joker” seemed like a strong awards contender for Phoenix’s physically and emotionally demanding performance as the title DC Comics villain, but since the film as a whole is so divisive we didn’t necessarily think it would do as well as it has overall. But in addition to Phoenix’s win at the Golden Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association also nominated it for Best Film Drama and Best Director (Todd Phillips), and Hildur Guðnadóttir won for her score.. And it’s the leading film at the BAFTAs with 11 nominations.

Might we be underestimating Christian Bale at the Oscars? He has earned four nominations and one win in just the last 10 years, and his performance as real-life racer Ken Miles in “Ford v Ferrari” is looking more and more like a threat for a Best Actor bid this year. History has proved that it’s perilous to underestimate him, especially when he’s playing a historical figure.

Though Bale had already put together an impressive resume by then, he didn’t get his first Oscar nomination until “The Fighter” (2010), for which he won Best Supporting Actor. He quickly followed that with a Best Actor bid for “American Hustle” (2013), another Best Supporting Actor nom for “The Big Short” (2015), and then he was back in the Best Actor race with “Vice” (2018).

It’s been an up-and-down awards season for “Little Women.” It was one of the biggest films at the Critics’ Choice Award nominations with nine bids, but then it only earned two Golden Globe nominations, and it was shut out entirely by the Screen Actors Guild. Can it rebound at the Oscars? If nothing else, it looks like Greta Gerwig is still on track for a Best Director nom, according to the predictions of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed as of this writing.
Gerwig ranks among the top five likely nominees in our Experts’ predictions, with 14 of them betting on her to make the cut: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Erik Davis (Fandango), Eric Deggans (NPR), Matthew Jacobs (Huffington Post), Alicia Malone (Turner Classic Movies), Andrea Mandell (USA Today), Scott Mantz (Collider), Perri Nemiroff (Collider), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Kevin Polowy (Yahoo), Claudia Puig (Kpcc), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Brian Truitt...

On Saturday, December 7, Cynthia Erivo (“Harriet”) was an Oscar underdog in the Best Actress race with 25/1 odds. But then the Critics’ Choice Award nominations were announced on December 8, followed by the Golden Globe nominations on December 9 and the SAG Award nominations on December 11. She was nominated for all three. Since then she has already improved to 12/1 odds, though she’s still on the bubble. Is it time to stop underestimating her? She could finish her Egot grand slam in record time.
Erivo had a career breakthrough with her lead performance in the Broadway revival of “The Color Purple,” which won her the Tony for Best Actress in a Musical in 2016. A few months later she won a Grammy for the cast recording. And a few months after that she won a Daytime Emmy for performing with the “Color Purple” cast on “Today.” So all she needs is an Oscar to win Egot,...

Here's something you might not have known about Robert Pattinson's new movie, The Lighthouse: it includes a lengthy scene of him masturbating inside a shed. And here's something you might not have known about Robert Pattinson: he's very happy to discuss it!
The actor stars in the Robert Eggers psychological thriller alongside Willem Dafoe, with the pair playing two lighthouse keepers who are posted on a remote New England island in the late 1800s. Gradually, the men begin to go stir crazy in their surroundings, hallucinating mermaids, keeping grave secrets, spying on each other, and committing acts of violence. Oh, and there's Pattinson's "ferocious masturbation scene," of course! (His words.)

As one of the last Oscar contenders left to screen, all eyes have been on Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” to see just how big of an impact the ensemble drama will have on this year’s awards race. Sony has finally unveiled the “Lady Bird” director’s star-studded adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 novel of the same name, with an outpouring of strong first reactions on social media suggesting the new “Little Women” might have what it takes to land several Oscar nominations.
While the novel has been adapted numerous times for the big and small screen, Gillian Armstrong’s 1994 film, considered a classic version of the story, previously landed three Oscar nominations: Best Actress, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Score. It appears Gerwig’s new movie is a strong contender in these races and more.

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. That’s the message that Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts are now giving to “The Good Place.” Despite being snubbed in Best Comedy Series the past two years, these savvy prognosticators now believe that NBC’s cerebral show about life after death will finally hear its name called in Emmy’s top category. “Barry” had a great first season at the Emmys. In 2018 it earned 13 nominations and 3 wins, including Best Comedy Actor (Bill Hader) and Best Comedy Supporting Actor (Henry Winkler). But Winkler was the only supporting star who was even nominated. Will his co-stars Anthony Carrigan, Stephen Root and Sarah Goldberg get to share the spotlight in season two? It’s actually quite common for a show to blow up in the supporting categories after first-year snubs.
Even some of the Emmys’ favorite shows didn’t sweep the supporting categories right away. “Sex and the City” scene-stealer Kim Cattrall had to wait until season two for her first nomination, while Cynthia Nixon had to wait until season four and Kristin Davis didn’t get hers until the sixth and final year. “The Office” didn’t get any supporting nominations until its third season in 2007, the year after it won Best Comedy Series.

Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts have spoken, and they believe that “Game of Thrones” will win Best Drama Series for the fourth time at the upcoming ceremony. A whopping 21 of these 24 Experts from major media outlets have the HBO fantasy epic in their #1 positions, but what about the other three? Well, Nikki Novak (Fandango) and Debbie Day (Rotten Tomatoes) both believe that BBC America’s cat-and-mouse crime thriller “Killing Eve” will prevail, while Matt Webb Mitovich (TVLine) goes out on a limb for “Pose,” FX’s series about the Lgbt community’s ballroom culture in the 1980s.

Remember just three months ago when “Escape at Dannemora” was the overwhelming favorite to win Best Limited Series at the Emmys? Well, not anymore. The Showtime series is still slightly out front in our combined odds, but our pundits are as split as ever, as all five predicted nominees have backers. Not just that, but “Dannemora” and “When They See Us” have divided a majority of our Experts down the middle.
“Dannemora” and When They See Us” each have eight Experts seeing gold for it. Chris Harnick (E!), Lynette Rice (Entertainment Weekly), Jen Chaney (Vulture), Ed Martin (Media Village), Lynn Elber (Associated Press), Ben Travers (IndieWire), Kelly Lawler (USA Today) and Anne Thompson (IndieWire) are predicting “Dannemora” to win. Directed by Ben Stiller, the show was the big winner with the guilds and the Golden Globes earlier this year, so it’s definitely the safest choice to go with.

The stranglehold that “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” has held on Gold Derby’s Emmy predictions for Best TV Movie has been released, with a new front-runner emerging in the form of “Deadwood: The Movie.” As more and more of our Emmy Experts watched HBO’s reunion telefilm, which was released on the final day of Emmy eligibility, it continued to creep up our winner’s chart. As of this writing, “Deadwood” now officially tops our combined predictions with leading 7/2 odds to win Best TV Movie, just ahead of the 37/10 odds for Netflix’s interactive entry “Bandersnatch.”

If Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts are correct, then we can expect “Veep” to win its fourth (and final) trophy this year as Best Comedy Series. HBO’s political satire prevailed in 2015, 2016 and 2017, but it was not eligible for Emmys in 2018 as it took that year off due to star Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ cancer treatment. Now 19 of our 24 Emmyologists from major media outlets believe that “Veep” will have the last laugh yet again. Amazon’s period dramedy “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” which took advantage of “Veep’s” absence last year and ran off with the top trophy, is the favorite to upset the front-runner by four of our Experts. But there’s also a dark horse in HBO’s hitman-turned-actor comedy “Barry,” which has the support of one Expert.

HBO‘s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” is the three-time defending champion for Best Variety Talk Series at the Emmys, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s guaranteed to four-peat this year. While it is indeed the front-runner again according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, several of the Expert journalists from top media outlets we’ve polled think “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” will overtake him this time. Easier said than done?
When it comes to talk shows at the Emmys, it’s tough to stop a winning streak once it gets started. “The Late Show with David Letterman” won Best Variety Series five times in a row (1998-2002). Immediately after that “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” won 10 times in a row (2003-2012). Then Colbert won twice with his previous series, “The Colbert Report” (2013-2014) only for Stewart to roar back with one...

We’ve polled 24 Expert journalists for their Emmy predictions, and as of this writing a majority of them (13 out of 24) say “Game of Thrones” will win Best Drama Supporting Actress. So how is Julia Garner (“Ozark”) still their front-runner? Because those Experts can’t agree on which “Game of Thrones” actress will win, which illustrates how vote-splitting can throw a race into flux.
Out of the 13 Experts currently betting on “Game of Thrones” in this category, six say Lena Headey will win, six say Maisie Williams, and one says Sophie Turner. Add them all up and you’ve got an Emmy favorite, but none of them individually are predicted by as many Experts as Garner, who is backed by these nine journalists: Lynn Elber (Associated Press), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Ed Martin (Media Village), Mary Murphy (Gold Derby), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Matt Roush (TV Guide Magazine), Kaitlin Thomas (TVGuide.com...

Robin Weigert came out of nowhere at the Emmys in 2004 when she was nominated for Best Drama Supporting Actress for playing Calamity Jane on “Deadwood.” She probably got a boost from her small but pivotal role that same season as a Mormon statue come to life in “Angels in America.” Now 15 years later she’s eligible for Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actress for “Deadwood: The Movie” and could get another boost from her pivotal role in “Big Little Lies.”
A nomination this year wouldn’t be as big a surprise as it was in 2004 since Weigert is better known these days. Since that “Deadwood” breakthrough she has had myriad film and TV credits including “Sons of Anarchy,” “American Horror Story,” “Jessica Jones” and a lot more. “Bodyguard” star Richard Madden keeps doing better and better in our Emmy odds for Best Drama Actor. We rank him third as of this writing, but the Expert journalists from top media outlets who have given us their predictions place him second, with six of them betting on him to win. But what about Keeley Hawes as the politician Madden’s title character is tasked with protecting? We might not be giving her nearly enough credit in the race for Best Drama Supporting Actress.
That’s not to say everyone is discounting her. Far from it. Though no Experts are currently predicting that Hawes will win, these eight are betting that she’ll be nominated: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Mary Murphy (Gold Derby), Matt Roush (TV Guide Magazine), Kaitlin Thomas (TVGuide.com), Anne Thompson (IndieWire), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) and Glenn Whipp (La Times). The Emmys love to reward “Saturday Night Live” stars who come back to guest-host the show, but this could be the first time voters honor an alum for Best Comedy Guest Actor who was strictly a writer for the show, not a regular cast member. John Mulaney has been a regular fixture at the Emmys, racking up 2 wins out of 12 nominations as a writer, songwriter and producer over the past decade, but he has never been nominated for a performance award. This year, though, he could even win.
Based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby’s users as of this writing, Mulaney ranks second in the category with odds of 9/2, behind front-runner Peter MacNicol (“Veep”). Our Emmy odds have consistently placed Amazon’s drama series “Homecoming” among the strong contenders for Best Drama Series, Best Drama Actress (Julia Roberts) and Best Drama Supporting Actor (Bobby Cannavale). But might we be underestimating Stephan James for his role as a traumatized soldier? As of this writing one of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed is going out on a limb for him to be nominated for Best Drama Actor.
Glenn Whipp (La Times) is currently predicting that James will pick up his first career bid. The actor stars as Walter Cruz, who returns from his military service with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and tries to process those experiences in a mysterious, experimental facility run by a well-meaning counselor (Roberts). But there’s more to the facility than meets the eye.

As you may recall, three years ago Peter MacNicol earned an Emmy nomination in Best Comedy Guest Actor that was later rescinded after Gold Derby discovered that the “Veep” actor was actually ineligible due to appearing in too many episodes. MacNicol was replaced by Peter Scolari (“Girls”) on the Emmy ballot, who against all odds wound up winning. Flash-forward to this year and MacNicol is now a front-runner to prevail for his role as political strategist Jeff Kane, screeching uncle of Jonah Ryan (Timothy Simons), according to our Experts from major media outlets.

“Saturday Night Live” is on a hot streak in the Emmy race for Best Comedy Guest Actress, winning three in a row for Tiffany Haddish (2018), Melissa McCarthy (2017) and Tina Fey & Amy Poehler (2016). However, our Experts from major media outlets predict an upset in the category this year for Emmy fave Jane Lynch for Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” This TV veteran was nominated last year for her complicated role of 1950s gimmick comic Sophie Lennon, ultimately losing to Haddish on Emmy night. Will Lynch get the last laugh this time around?

“Saturday Night Live” is the heavy favorite to win Best Variety Sketch Series for the third year in a row this year after dominating the Emmys in 2017 and 2018, but the venerable NBC series hasn’t always been so indomitable. It lost the top prize to “Inside Amy Schumer” in 2015 and “Key and Peele” in 2016. And now, according to a couple of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed from major media outlets, it could lose to IFC’s “Documentary Now.”
A win for “Documentary Now” would kind of be a win for “SNL” too considering that it was created by “SNL” alums Fred Armisen, Bill Hader and Seth Meyers and is also executive produced by “SNL” mastermind Lorne Michaels. It’s a mockumentary series that parodies classic nonfiction films like “Grey Gardens,” “The Thin Blue Line,” “The War Room” and “Wild Wild Country,” among many others, with special guest stars taking part in the absurd recreations.

With writer/director/producer/actors Donald Glover (“Atlanta”) and Aziz Ansari (“Master of None”) not in contention at the Emmys this year, who will fill the void for comedy auteurs in the Best Comedy Actor race? There were two reasons I was moved to turn on “The Kominsky Method,” about an acting teacher and his longtime agent, for the first time. Namely, Oscar owners Michael Douglas, 74, and Alan Arkin, 85. Their marvelous edgy rapport and mastery of their art kept me bingeing as their characters yearn for the old days while fighting the ravages of aging. It was similar to what happened when Jane Fonda, 81, and Lily Tomlin, 79, had me devouring “Grace & Frankie.” The fact that legendary stars of this caliber are streaming through the universe and onto screens of all shapes and sizes seems to be a small miracle. Don’t think that the makers of HBO’s “Big Little Lies” didn’t know they had to top the first season’s killer combo of Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern and Reese Witherspoon by reeling in the starriest catch of them all for its second season, Meryl Streep,...

Mj Rodriguez is a TV trailblazer. She stars on FX’s “Pose,” which itself is a trailblazing series for centering the lives and experiences of transgender women of color — who are actually played by transgender women of color, which up until recently has been a rarity in film and TV. So if Rodriguez earns an Emmy nomination for Best Drama Actress it would be unprecedented. She’s the emotional heart of the show as resilient house mother Blanca, so I think she might be a bigger threat in the category than we’re currently giving her credit for.
It was just five years ago that Laverne Cox made history as the first openly transgender person to earn a Primetime Emmy nom for acting. She contended for Best Comedy Guest Actress in 2014 for her recurring role on “Orange is the New Black,” and then after the show jumped categories she was...

Thank you, Gwen Verdon. If Michelle Williams finally wins her first industry peer-group award for her heart-tugging turn in FX’s “Fosse/Verdon,” it will be thanks to her portrayal of that sassy, high-kicking Broadway legend who bagged multiple Tony Awards for her stage roles in “Damn Yankees,” “Can-Can” and more.

Aidy Bryant stars in the Hulu comedy series “Shrill” as Annie, an overweight woman reclaiming her self-worth. With the Critics’ Choice Awards just hours away on Sunday January 13, our 30 Oscar experts from major media outlets are hoping to get guidance from these key precursor prizes as to what will win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Their votes remain split between four films, with two of these far out front of the other two.
Since being all but shut out of the Golden Globes, “A Star is Born” has seen its lead over “Roma” in the Best Picture race at the Oscars shrink. It now leads our experts tally by a vote of 16 to 10. Three of our experts are holding out hope for “Green Book,” which won Best Comedy/Musical at the Globes while one is backing “BlacKkKlansman.” [See the most up-to-date Best Picture rankings by our 30 Experts.]
Although “A Star is Born” enjoys a clear majority of first-place votes from the experts, it is not that far ahead of “Roma” and “Green Book” on our Best Picture odds chart.

This year the Oscars narrowed down the race for Best Original Score to a shortlist of 15 contenders from which the final 5 nominees will be chosen. That makes it all the more impressive that Nicholas Britell made the cut twice, for both “If Beale Street Could Talk” and “Vice.” Could he now join an exclusive club of music makers who have been nominated twice in the same category?
Only four composers in the last 30 years have been nominated twice for Best Score. Thomas Newman doubled up for “Little Women” and “The Shawshank Redemption” (1994). James Horner picked up a pair of bids for “Apollo 13” and “Braveheart” (1995). Alexandre Desplat received matching noms for “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and “The Imitation Game” (2014). And John Williams … well, John Williams does it constantly. The man behind the music of “Star Wars,” “Indiana Jones,” “Harry Potter” and much more has been a double nominee eight times...

Lady Gaga has been greeted like Hollywood royalty in her first leading role on the big screen, “A Star is Born.” But she’s not the only Queen competing for kudos this season. The Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” is also in the running for awards. It would be Oscar kismet if both make the cut because the band was actually the inspiration for Lady Gaga’s name.
“I adored Freddie Mercury and Queen had a hit called ‘Radio Ga Ga.’ That’s why I love the name,” said Lady Gaga about her moniker back in 2009. The artist formerly known as Stefani Germanotta added, “He was not only a singer but also a fantastic performer, a man of the theater and someone who constantly transformed himself. In short: a genius.” So will she and her namesake both be rewarded on Oscar night?
