No Safe Havens: Letitia Wright’s Breathtaking Refugee Turn
Frank Berry’s Aisha is the superbly moving record of a Nigerian refugee’s quiet fight for dignity in Ireland’s inhumane Direct Provision system for asylum seekers. Thoroughly-researched but fictional, gently-paced but absorbing, Berry’s affecting narrative is anchored by standout performances from Letitia Wright (The Silent Twins) and Josh O’Connor (Mothering Sunday). Haunted by forces they can’t control, these two unlikely soulmates form an unexpectedly tender bond; by film’s end, they embody a tragic authenticity reminiscent of Italian neorealism. Even though Irish writer/director Berry is known for socially conscious work (2014’s I Used to Live Here and 2017’s Michael Inside), Aisha is far more than an ‘important’ film bolstered by real-world injustice.…...

Halle Berry’s portrayal of Storm, the legendary X-Men character, is a testament to her versatility and talent as an actress. Berry not only brought the beloved comic book mutant to life but also left a lasting impact on fans worldwide through her performance in the X-Men movies from 2000-2014.
Halle Berry as the X-Men mutant Storm
However, despite being synonymous with the X-Men franchise, Halle Berry’s role in the 2014 film X-Men: Days of Future Past was significantly reduced. Although Berry was initially supposed to feature prominently in the 2014 sequel, things changed. Surprisingly, fans couldn’t blame the studio for it.
Halle Berry’s Reduced Screentime in X-Men: Days of Future Past
After being at the forefront of the 2003 movie X2 and playing a significant role as Storm, in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand, Halle Berry returned to reprise her role, one last time, in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Thanks to the X-Men franchise, Halle Berry was once synonymous with the Marvel superhero Storm. But when it was time to reprise her role as the mutant, she couldn’t play the character like she did in the past.

Berry’s role as Storm seemed to increase with each subsequent X-Men film. Although she didn’t play as big of a part in the first movie, she was at the forefront of X2 and especially The Last Stand. After the original X-Men trilogy, the franchise moved in another direction, focusing on a younger version of the cast. But X-Men Days of Future Past saw the younger X-Men interact with older counterparts.

No classic rock band is completely original. The Beach Boys’ sound was inspired by the vocal harmonies of another band. The Beach Boys’ Mike Love also revealed that the riff from “Fun, Fun, Fun” was inspired by one of the quintessential 1950s artists.
Mike Love said The Beach Boys were inspired by a college-themed band
During a 2020 interview with American Songwriter, Love discussed The Beach Boys’ famous harmonies. “I never took any voice lessons, per se,” he revealed. “But we always got together and sang harmonies. I would gravitate to the bass part and Carl [Wilson] would be above me and then Brian [Wilson] would be on the top.”
A certain barbershop group inspired the band. “We emulated The Four Freshmen,” Love said. “In fact, we learned a few of their arrangements. The Four Freshmen are just amazing artists and singers.” The Four Freshmen are mostly remembered for the college-themed hit “Graduation Day.

Halle Berry can’t let go of psychological thrillers.
The Oscar winner turned up in Las Vegas on Wednesday during Lionsgate’s studio presentation to promote its new film, Alexandre Aja’s Never Let Go, which brings Berry back into a genre she explored more than 20 years ago, in earlier work like Gothika. But this one pushed her to new limits.
Set for release on Sept. 27, Never Let Go centers on a mother and her twin sons as they try to protect themselves from evil lurking in and around their home. Needing to stay connected at all times — always by a connection of ropes — they hold tight to one another and never let go. However, one of the boys questions if the evil is real, triggering a terrifying fight for survival. Anthony B. Jenkins, Percy Daggs, Matthew Kevin Anderson, Christin Park and Stephanie Lavigne also star.

Update: A trailer for Never Let Go was shown during the Lionsgate panel at CinemaCon today, and JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek was in attendance. Here’s a description of what he saw: “Halle Berry and her two kids are living in a cabin after the world ends. This cabin has a rope/pulley system & they must be attached to you when leaving the house. The monsters/entities (they are very vague on what the threat is but its something that is physical) can’t get you with the rope attached to you and so they (monsters?) are trying to convince one child to doubt the rope safety. They want them to detach and if so, we see that it would put them in grave danger. The kids are twins born in a house that they have never left because of the dangers on the outside. The creatures (which you...

“I had to learn how to skin a squirrel” said Berry about her prep for the role. Not to mention, the characters eat raw frogs in the film.

While Amazon MGM Studios didn’t take the stage at CinemaCon, they did meet with exhibitors and key press to strut their future theatrical slate, in particular they showed off ten minutes of the Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ movie Red One. While we agree to keep mum about the details of the Santa Claus rescue movie, let’s just say the originally conceived for Prime Video title is definitely meant for theatrical, which is where it’s going on Nov. 15; the only wide release currently on that weekend.
Let’s just say that Red One is a fire-breathing Christmas action movie that completely reinvents the holiday genre. There hasn’t been a mass appealing Christmas tentpole in six years, the last being Illumination/Universal’s The Grinch which made over a half billion worldwide. Red One is a really fun original action film for both Johnson and Evans, and...

Lionsgate delays two of its big release: The Crow remake is still arriving this year, but Saw XI no longer is. More here.
Lionsgate has delayed two of its planned releases, pushing both The Crow and Saw XI out of their respective release slots and further down the line.
Saw XI has been delayed for a full year, with the film being pushed from September 2024 all the way back to September 2025. Given that the project only confirmed that Saw X's Kevin Greutert was returning as director back in February, this one is clearly still in development mode. We haven’t heard any casting news yet, meaning that September release date was simply not doable, especially given that its predecessor, Saw X picked up pretty good reviews.
With the long-running horror series once again on the rise, Lionsgate won’t want to rush out a sequel and damage the series’ newfound momentum.

“Kamen Rider Zo” (1993) was a remarkable addition to Keita Amemiya's expanding filmography. Despite a condensed runtime, the overall direction and execution were incredibly strong, which made up for that; hence, it remains one of the most favored pieces of media in the beloved superhero's extensive franchise and one of the director's finest films. It balanced fun sci-fi while respectfully honoring the thought-provoking themes the franchise is known for with a gritty edge, not to mention great creature designs. For Amemiya's second rendition of the cyber-enhanced grasshopper protagonist, he would switch gears with “Kamen Rider J,” a decent, if somewhat underwhelming, follow-up.

Through thought-provoking discussions, impactful performances, and, at times, emotional conversations, A Day of Unreasonable Conversation surfaced new perspectives on today’s most complex topics to an audience of television writers, showrunners, and executives. Speakers were vulnerable in sharing stories that often do not get heard and urged the audience of TV creators to incorporate these experiences into their work.
First Lady Jill Biden and Halle Berry candidly discussed formerly taboo women’s health topics such as menopause, emphasizing the need for a new approach to women’s health research. Berry shared a personal story about how she realized that she was going through perimenopause, bringing forth blushes and laughter from the audience.

Oscar winner Halle Berry has been a part of many activistic campaigns in her career. The Catwoman star had been a vocal supporter of Barrack Obama during his presidential campaign in 2008 and successfully campaigned against the building of a natural gas facility off the coast of Malibu.
The actress has also been actively involved in a campaign to change the narrative on women going through menopause. Berry revealed last year that she was in the middle of a transitional period and mentioned how she wanted to change the image of women going through the phase. Cancelled Netflix sci-fi thriller The Mothership was “full of mystery and threat” and had “the makings of a classic,” its storyboard artist tells us.
In January, news broke that Netflix had made the decision to scrap The Mothership – a sci-fi thriller starring Halle Berry that had been shot and was initially scheduled for release in 2023.
To date, the only official comment we’ve heard from Netflix came from interim content boss Bela Bajaria, who at a press event in February said there were “lots of issues during production, and so everybody just felt like it was the right thing to… do something else together eventually.”
The decision to abandon a relatively high-profile movie with some Oscar-winning talent attached is unusual – Bajara herself admitted that the situation was “rare” – though not unheard of. Over the past year, Warner Bros has infamously scrapped the likes of Batgirl, Scoob! 2 and Coyote Vs Acme.

Since the Academy Awards were first handed out in 1929, only 23 Oscars have been awarded to performances given by Black actresses and actors. Hattie McDaniel made history for Black performers by winning for “Gone With the Wind” (supporting in 1939), while Sidney Poitier was the first male actor to prevail for “Lilies of the Field” (lead in 1963). Denzel Washington became the first two-time Black acting champion when he claimed victory for “Glory” (supporting in 1989) and “Training Day” (lead in 2001), with Mahershala Ali joining him years later for “Moonlight” (supporting in 2016) and “Green Book” (supporting in 2018). Halle Berry was the first, and so far only, Black Best Actress thanks to “Monster’s Ball” (2001). The acting category with the most Black winners is Best Supporting Actress, with 10 including recent champ Da’Vine Joy Randolph for “The Holdovers” (2023). PBS viewers will be able to celebrate the holidays with Mary Berry tonight, Monday, December 18, with her new show, Mary Berry’s Highland Christmas, which will see the beloved baker traveling to her mother’s homeland of Scotland for a magical winter break. The special comes amid Berry’s recovery from hip surgery, which she underwent in 2021 following a fall in her garden where she broke her hip. After 10 nights in hospital, The Great British Bake Off alum returned home and was forced to take things slow. “That was hard for me,” she told the U.K.’s Mirror last year. “I remember the doctor telling me that the recovery would take around a year and a half, and I thought, ‘Not for me!’ But he’s right – I still have quite a way to go before I’m fully healed. It will be a little while longer, but I’m getting there.

Sandra Bullock partially made her career off of action films like Speed and Demolition Man. Although the genre treated her well enough, she wasn’t always sure if it was designed for female actors to thrive in.
Sandra Bullock felt action films did women a disservice in the 2000s Sandra Bullock | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Bullock believed the action genre became even less accommodating to female actors as time went on. Ironically, she herself experienced her breakthrough role opposite Keanu Reeves in Speed. This led to a bit of a career winning streak for Bullock that saw the Oscar-winner return to the genre a couple of times.
In 2002, she starred in the darker action thriller Murder by Numbers. Perhaps what intrigued her the most about the feature was the character she ended up playing. She felt the role was a callback to characters from another time that all but vanished in the new millennium.

Wiip, the company behind the Emmy-winning HBO miniseries Mare of Easttown, has acquired the rights to make a film adaptation of the horror graphic novel Adamtine, Deadline reports. Mark Roybal, Paul Lee, and Nate Winslow will be producing the film, while the graphic novel’s writer Hannah Berry serves as executive producer. The deal was brokered by Berry’s representative, Emma Topping of Viv Loves Film.
Berry told Deadline that Mare of Easttown is one of her “favorite series of the last ten years,” so she feels that she “could not have asked for a better home” for Adamtine than Wiip. She went on to say, “I’m delighted beyond measure, and hugely grateful to Emma Topping for making it happen. I’m very much looking forward to working with Wiip and – in the best possible way – unsettling a lot of people together.”

The next graphic novel to make the leap to the screen is Hannah Berry’s Adamtine, with Deadline reporting this morning that Wiip will be turning the graphic novel into a film.
Mark Roybal (“Mare of Easttown”) will produce the upcoming horror movie alongside wiip’s Paul Lee and Nate Winslow. Berry will serve as an executive producer.
In Adamtine, four strangers on the last train home, all with their own connections to a serial killer, are stalked by a sneaking, shapeless evil with nowhere to run.
“I’m very much looking forward to working with wiip and – in the best possible way – unsettling a lot of people together,” Hannah Berry said in a statement this week.
The graphic novel was originally published in 2012.

There were few bands on the planet bigger than R.E.M. in the mid-Nineties. Their popularity grew every year in the Eighties before they went supernova the following decade thanks to hits like “Losing My Religion,” “Man on the Moon,” “Everybody Hurts,” and “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?” Warner Bros. was so desperate to keep them on the label in 1996 that it gave them $80 million for their next five albums, breaking all industry records up to that point.

Of all the James Bond movies, "Die Another Day" is perhaps the most detested. Maybe you think it's an underrated Bond film deserving of more respect, but the prevailing view of this early 2000s outing is that of a truly shameful blunder in the canon. Of course, perspectives shift over time. At one point, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" was treated with similar derision to "Die Another Day," and now George Lazenby's only outing in the tux is viewed as one of the best in Bond's 60-year on-screen run. But there's something about "Die Another Day" that I can't help but feel will forever keep it from achieving the same respect.
The ice palaces, invisible cars, and Korean colonels using plastic surgery to transform into insufferable British toffs, are all beyond ridiculous. But they're funny, and Bond has been funny and lighthearted at various points throughout his career to great effect.

Matthew Vaughn is opening up about one of the reasons he had for quitting directing X-Men: The Last Stand. The director revealed during New York Comic Con he left the film after finding out a scheme to get Halle Berry to sign on to reprise her role of Storm by tricking her with a fake script.
“One of the main reasons I quit X-Men 3, and this is a true story. Hollywood is really political and odd,” he said during Nycc (via ScreenRant). “I went to an executive’s office and I saw an X3 script. It was a lot fatter. I asked, ‘What is this draft?’ They were like, ‘Don’t worry about it.'”
He continued, “So I grabbed it, and opened the first page, and it said, ‘Africa. Kids dying from no water, and Storm creates a thunderstorm to save all these children.’ I thought it was a pretty cool idea.

Matthew Vaughn is revealing the lengths Fox went to to ensure Halle Berry’s return to the “X-Men” franchise for third film “X-Men: The Last Stand.”

With this year’s New York Comic Con coming to a close, undoubtedly one of the biggest draws of the event was director Matthew Vaughn, who gave details on an upcoming Kick-Ass reboot, why he left X-Men: The Last Stand and his promising upcoming spy thriller Argylle.

Though its box office grosses are dwarfed by its cinematic sibling, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the X-Men franchise is no slouch, outperforming such other franchises as Harry Potter, James Bond, and Jurassic Park. Halle Berry, who has appeared as Storm in four of the X-Men films, told us she believes the franchise has been so successful because, with its large collection of cast-aside mutants, there’s bound to be at least one or more of the characters that everybody can relate to, and the issues they face are universal in nature.
