Considering how much build-up Longlegs has had – with the stream of teasers, posters and symbols – the horror film had a lot to live up to, at least how it was being marketed. Fortunately for the involved parties, Longlegs looks to be one of the horror flicks to see so far this year, with most praising it for being an unnerving work that features stellar performances and channels The Silence of the Lambs.
Check out some of the early reviews of Longlegs below:
I was so lucky to see #Longlegs, and no exaggeration: it could be the best horror film of ‘24. Oz Perkins can really get under my skin; this is his masterpiece. Monroe gives a fabulously unique lead performance, and Cage? Nightmarish. Maybe the scariest 1st 10 mins, ever. pic.twitter.com/ImMEDDxGXi

Horror fans have been keeping a very close eye on director Osgood Perkins' next project, and the first social media reactions for the mysterious Longlegs are in.
These reactions are highly positive, and it sounds like the movie is a genuinely disturbing, terrifying experience.
Though Longlegs definitely seems to be keeping its biggest secrets firmly under wraps for the time being (and the teasers are all the better for it), we do know that the plot revolves around a rookie FBI agent (It Follows star Maika Monroe) attempting to track down a sadistic serial killer (Nicolas Cage) who targets families.
Cage's character has largely been kept out of the marketing, aside from one unsettling shot.
Check out the social media posts below, and keep an eye out for a new trailer.

Trying to sell someone on the indie comedy "Hundreds of Beavers" is an exercise in comedic persuasion. Do you talk about how it's a black-and-white movie without dialogue evoking the approach of Charlie Chaplin? Do you highlight the slapstick physical comedy that would make "The Three Stooges" proud? Or do you simply say, "This dude fights people in animal mascot suits in the snow" and let the universe work its magic? First debuting on the festival circuit in 2022 and now finally available on VOD, "Hundreds of Beavers" has quietly become the must-see oddball indie flick for cinephiles everywhere. It's a seemingly algorithm-proof movie that, as /Film's Matt Donato described in his review, exists at the crossroads of Looney Tunes, Benny Hill, "Cannibal: The Musical," "Blazing Saddles," and Adult Swim mindsets. It's also a delightfully Midwest movie, embracing a sense of humor that has been missing from major comedy films for far too long.

In his Sundance review, Matt Donato wrote that Chris Nash's In a Violent Nature "...gushes exquisite gore and reimagines the slasher structure with newfound originality," and ahead of its May 31st theatrical release via IFC Films, the film's official trailer teases some of the new movie's macabre moments after a corpse is resurrected for a vengeful rampage in the woods.

Just when it feels like the found footage horror genre has run out of steam, some upstart filmmaker always seems to swing in with a bold new variation on the concept. According to the critics who saw the film at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival (who collectively awarded the movie a perfect 100-percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes), Australian directors Cameron and Colin Cairnes have done precisely this with "Late Night with the Devil."
The film claims to be a master tape of a fictional late-night talk show titled "Night Owls with Jack Delroy." On this particular episode, aired on Halloween night in 1977, Delroy (David Dastmalchian), a ho-hum comedian desperate to juice his sagging ratings, brings on parapsychologist Dr. June Ross-Mitchell (Laura Gordon) to promote her latest book on Satanic cults. Appearing with her is Lilly (Ingrid Torelli), the only survivor of a mass suicide brought on by some kind of demonic hysteria.

This post contains spoilers for "True Detective: Night Country."
"True Detective: Night Country" is starting to look more and more like a horror show. Two episodes into the season's six-part run, things in Ennis, Alaska just keep getting stranger. The severed tongue of Indigenous activist Anne appeared on a research facility's floor six years after she died. The scientists at said research facility (who remind us a lot of horror classic "The Thing") ended up dead in the snow, naked and frozen with ruptured eardrums and scratched-out eyes. At least two characters have heard a voice whisper "She's awake" in their minds, and a little girl is drawing pictures of a local folk figure — a woman in the snow with bloody, dripping hands. On top of all that, the ghost of Rust Cohle's dad may or may not be out in the wilderness, possibly worshipping the sky.

According to a listing on the official AMC Theatres website, Godzilla Minus One Minus Color will be getting a theatrical release here in the States on Friday, January 26, 2024!
How many theaters will it be playing in? And how long will it be playing for? We have no idea at this time, but you probably want to jump on that while you have the chance.

What if Nicolas Cage was Freddy Krueger, minus the fondness for murdering people, the burn-induced scarring, and the razor-bladed glove? Cage's character, the unsuspecting middle-aged professor Paul Matthews, even shares Freddy's predilection for cozy knitted sweaters in "Dream Scenario," the latest eccentric exercise in metamodern storytelling from contemporary indie powerhouse A24.
Much like Paul becomes an overnight celebrity when he inexplicably begins popping up in people's dreams around the world, "Dream Scenario" has suddenly found itself in the spotlight following its positive reception on the film festival circuit. With Cage essentially portraying two characters in the film (the real Paul and the one who keeps intruding into people's nighttime fantasies), his performances in "Dream Scenario" are already being compared to his acclaimed work playing radically different twins in director Spike Jonze and writer Charlie Kaufman's surreal dramedy "Adaptation." Kenneth Branagh is back once again as Detective Hercule Poirot in a brand new Agatha Christie adaptation. "A Haunting in Venice" is the third interpretation of Christie's work by Branagh in the past several years, with the actor and director taking on a lesser-known book by the author for a more overtly horror-driven tale. With a stacked A-list cast that includes the likes of Tina Fey, Jamie Dornan, and Michelle Yeoh, this is one of the most star-studded films of the fall season.
Following 2017's "Murder on the Orient Express" and 2022's "Death on the Nile," this latest Poirot mystery is set in post-World War II Venice on All Hallows' Eve. Now retired and living in exile in the one of world's most glamorous cities, Poirot reluctantly attends a séance at a haunted palazzo. (Welcome to Scariest Scene Ever, a column dedicated to the most pulse-pounding moments in horror with your tour guides, horror experts Chris Evangelista and Matt Donato. In this edition, Chris asks "What's your favorite scary movie?" with "Scream.")
"Scream" was a big deal. It cannot be overstated how much Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson's meta-slasher changed the game for horror. The genre felt more than a little stale in the 1990s, and then along came "Scream" in '96. The film was hip, it was bloody, it was scary, and it was funny. And it was a big damn hit, too, hauling in $173 million against a $14 million budget. In the aftermath, self-aware horror films with hot young casts became all the rage, all of them trying to ape what made "Scream" so special while never quite recapturing the magic of the original. It's also important to remember that "Scream" is scary.

While you wait, Bloody Disgusting has been provided with an exclusive clip from the film’s bonus features package today, featuring insights from director Rob Savage (Host).
“This creature has to remain scary and slightly intangible by the end of the movie or else we’ve kind of ruined the Boogeyman,” Savage explains. “We needed to find a design that was scary and familiar but also had an element about it that was slightly unknowable but spoke to something existentially terrifying.”

Frantic campers scavenge a park ranger’s rucksack inside his abandoned jeep. A shipwrecked sailor drags their waterproof emergency kit ashore. Apocalypse survivors raid a hardware depot after zombies chase civilization far away. Three different horror movie scenarios, all adding a holy grail item to whichever characters’ arsenal. Maybe loaded into a chamber, possibly as a roadside marker, but in any form, someone hoists an invaluable and iconic illumination tool: the almighty flare. Spark it, blast it, or blaze it for instantaneous cinematic ferocity and alarm.

Thanks to the massive success of "Get Out," the last several years have seen an influx of Black horror films, bringing some much-needed racial diversity to a predominantly white genre. Latino horror has also been going strong as ever of late, with films like "Tigers Are Not Afraid" and "La Llorona" reaping critical accolades left and right. But what about Asian-American horror? No, the J-horror remake trend of the 2000s doesn't count, not least of all because most of those "Americanized" re-imaginings centered on white characters.

“The Boys” ramped up its outrageousness in every way possible in its latest, third season— from, uh, a shrunken man venturing into a human orifice to Jensen Ackles‘ emergence as the Amazon Prime Video show’s satirical take on Captain America (Steve Rogers)… Soldier Boy.
The show, based on the comic book series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, is Eric Kripke‘s superhero satire. While comedic in many places, the show is first and foremost a drama and follows Karl Urban and Jack Quaid leading up a squad determined to take down the supes-gone-bad. The supes, in turn, are part of a team called The Seven (led by Anthony Starr‘s Homelander), which are handled by mega-company Vought International.

On June 9, 2023, “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” roared into theaters courtesy of Paramount Pictures. The film directed by Steven Caple Jr. received mixed reviews, resulting in a score of 53% on Rotten Tomatoes and a Critics Consensus that reads, “Thanks to some genuine human drama between the set pieces and palpable affection for the title characters, ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ is one of the franchise’s more enjoyable outings.”

Set in the ’90s, a new faction of Transformers – the Maximals – join the Autobots as allies in the battle for Earth. The ensemble cast includes Anthony Ramos, Dominique Fishback, Tobe Nwigwe, Peter Cullen, Pete Davidson, Michelle Yeoh, Liza Koshy, Cristo Fernández, John Dimaggio, Ron Perlman, Colman Domingo, Peter Dinklage and Michaela Jaé Rodriguez. Director Erik Bloomquist (Ten Minutes to Midnight, Long Lost) is back with slasher throwback She Came from the Woods, which is headed home this weekend.
After being released in theaters earlier this year, She Came from the Woods is now slashing its way onto Tubi on Saturday, June 10. Check out a gallery of exclusive character posters below, along with the previously released trailer for the 1980s-style summer camp slasher.
In She Came from the Woods, “A group of counselors unleashes a decades-old evil, long buried secrets, and bloody mayhem on the last night of summer camp in 1987.”
Matt Donato wrote in his review for Bloody Disgusting, “Even as a warmup act to the heavy hitters worshiped by slasher fans since the dawn of internet forums, She Came from the Woods stands its ground as an example of how no subgenre is dead with the proper approach.”

If you're afraid of clowns, there's a good chance you have Stephen King to blame. King practically gave birth to the killer clown horror story with his massive tome of terror "It," the story of a small Maine town cursed by a Lovecraftian monster who just happens to be able to take the shape of anything it wants — including a clown. The novel was famously adapted into a miniseries in the '90s, and in 2017, a new version of "It" hit the big screen. Despite some changes — it's set primarily in the '80s instead of the '50s like King's novel, and only has one timeline instead of two as King jumps back and...

Under the sea, life is not better. Do you know what lives down there? Have you seen "The Shallows"? Or "Jaws"? Or countless other aquatic horror films? Disney's "The Little Mermaid" live-action update will lie to another generation of young moviegoers who should be terrified about what lurks under the surface leagues-deep. There's still an overwhelming percentage of ocean depths that humankind has not explored, with so many horrors left to encounter. In honor of "The Little Mermaid," let's highlight just one of those nightmares.
We all can agree "Jaws" is the best fin flick of all time, but what about second place? I'd argue that Jaume Collet-Serra's "The Shallows" is a snout's length ahead of the pack,...

Entertainment Squad’s genre label, The Horror Collective, has acquired Travis Bible’s horror-comedy #chadgetstheaxe to be released via digital platforms this fall.
Adapted from an award-winning short with the same title, #chadgetstheaxe follows four social media influencers as they live stream their trip to Devil’s Manor, former home to a Satanic Cult. Things don’t go well. And as the violence ramps up… so do the views.
Matt Donato reviewed #chadgetstheaxe for Bloody Disgusting out of the Unnamed Footage Festival this year, writing: “The attraction of infinite adoration from fanbases is too much for some to ignore, and #chadgetstheaxe is a fun-filled, sneaky-creepy reminder that sometimes internet superstardom isn’t worth the likes or attention.”

Released nearly a year ago, the third season of “The Boys” on Amazon Prime Video remains some of the best TV we’ve watched in the last 12 months. The anti-colorful comic book series follows Jack Quaid and Karl Urban as two operatives trying to take down superhero mega-company Vought International, who make up the superhero team known as the Seven. The Seven, in turn, are led by Antony Starr‘s Homelander.
Homelander is the antithesis of DC’s Superman or Marvel’s Captain America. He has all the power (and more) but none of their moral compass. He is an egomaniac who outrightly believes he is better than everyone else and he relishes the dark deeds and violence the show has become so known for. But New Zealander Starr, who previously headlined “American Gothic,” “Banshee,” and “Tricky Business,” transforms Homelander from what could have been a standard evil villain into...

On April 21, “‘Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant” was released by MGM, with Guy Ritchie at the helm as director, writer and producer. In keeping with the "Evil Dead" theme in preparation for "Evil Dead Rise" on April 21, let's return to where it all began. Sam Raimi's "The Evil Dead" is an infamous video nasty that started one of horror's most beloved franchises. Between the original trilogy, Fede Álvarez's requel, and "Ash vs Evil Dead," there's something for everyone starting with a low-budget darling that held nothing back. It's grotesque, unbelievably scrappy, and inventive in the face of financial shortcomings. "The Evil Dead" is a miracle, so let's treat it like one.
"The Evil Dead" is Raimi's first and least comedic of the original trilogy. Practical effects can be more traumatizing than blending over-the-top humor and extravagant goriness.

The idea of a remake of "The Evil Dead" seemed like a form of blasphemy at one point, but horror hounds appear to love Fede Álvarez's remake/reboot/reimagining/etc, the 2013 film "Evil Dead". Me? I'm somewhere in the middle. I love the nasty, gory, overwhelmingly bleak atmosphere Álvarez and company created for the film. However, a lot of the dialogue is so painfully bad that it takes me out of the movie on more than one occasion. I'm not saying I expected Shakespearian prose from "Evil Dead," but I know they could've done a lot better. No matter — the film is still plenty visceral and scary,...

Once intended to be a straight-to-streaming HBO Max release, Evil Dead Rise went over so well with test screening audiences that it’s going to be receiving a theatrical release on April 21st – but before we get there, the film had its official premiere at the SXSW film festival last night. We have gathered some of the Twitter reactions below, and judging by most of these tweets Evil Dead fans are going to be in for a hell of a time next month!
Evil Dead franchise creator Sam Raimi handpicked Lee Cronin to write and direct a new Evil Dead movie after seeing his feature directorial debut The Hole in the Ground. The story Cronin crafted for Evil Dead Rise has the following synopsis: A road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A apartment.

In honor of "Cocaine Bear," let's look back on a mid-2010s wildlife horror film that shows what bears are capable of without drug enhancements. Humans love to connect with nature, pitching tents and roughing it deep within forestation, but we forget we're visitors to occupied territories. Deers might flee in fear, rabbits might scamper away, but bears are better experienced on your movie screens as drug smuggler punishers. Movies like "Backcountry" remind us what makes an animal wild, especially bears who can end some lives with a few paw swipes.
Adam MacDonald does well to represent the foolishness of campers who consider themselves outdoorsy just because they bought some all-weather equipment.

David Fincher's "Zodiac" was a box office disappointment when it arrived in 2007. Despite this, those who bothered to see the dang film came away impressed, and in the years since its release, "Zodiac" has risen to become considered by many (myself included) David Fincher's best film. Meticulously crafted and just as obsessive as both Fincher and the characters in the film, "Zodiac" isn't your normal serial killer movie. In fact, the killings stop rather early in the movie, and from there, "Zodiac" becomes less about the killer and more about the characters on his trail. Tense, funny, shocking, and often overwhelming, "Zodiac" is one of the best movies of the early 2000s.

Whether you caught sight of him in "Devotion" or "Top Gun: Maverick," Glen Powell was last seen flying high as a charming Navy pilot diving headfirst into a dangerous situation. Clearly, a big fan of fighting for his life while trapped in metal machines, Powell has already booked his next big role in a thriller called "Locked," where he stars as a criminal whose car burglary goes terribly wrong.
Per Deadline, "Locked" is "an intense, character-driven thriller about a thief who breaks into a luxury SUV, only to realize that he's stumbled into a complex and deadly trap set by a mysterious figure." And who will Powell star opposite as his thief desperately tries to escape? None other than two-time Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins. While the details of Hopkins' character are a little more mysterious, fingers crossed he plays the sinister figure who set the deadly trap.

While vacationing, a girl and her parents are taken hostage by armed strangers who demand that the family make a choice to avert the apocalypse. The thriller stars Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff and Ben Aldridge.
The film’s early reviews are mostly positive, earning a 67 freshness rating from critics and an audience score of 73 on Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus reads, “Although it’s often less than scary and parts of the story don’t bear scrutiny, ‘Knock at the Cabin’ is a thought-provoking chiller and upper-tier Shyamalan.” Read our full review roundup below.

Jason Best of What To Watch describes the film as “A return to form for ‘The Sixth Sense’ director,” before noting, “Shyamalan’s ersatz mysticism unbalances the story.

(Welcome to Scariest Scene Ever, a column dedicated to the most pulse-pounding moments in horror with your tour guides, horror experts Chris Evangelista and Matt Donato. In this edition, Chris reminds you of one of the scariest scenes in "The Sixth Sense.")
Spoilers follow. I know the movie is old enough that everyone knows the twist, but this way no one can complain!
"The Sixth Sense" wasn't M. Night Shyamalan's first film, but it was the film that put him on the map. And it seemingly came out of nowhere — the flick was released in August, which is usually a dumping ground for summer movies studios don't have much faith in. But what Shyamalan created proved to have serious legs, as critical raves and hype about the film's "big twist" helped make it the second-highest-grossing film of 1999. While the film is probably best remembered for its whopper of an ending,...

Here in the column, you'll get plenty of traditional horror picks with a few spicy takes thrown in because Chris and I are in charge. This week, I've found yet another reason to write about "The Bear," in easy contention for my favorite new show of 2022. There's something about dramatic expression in restaurant kitchens that's my kind of tantalizing, because cooking is one of the purest art forms. You create culinary art, it's brought directly to consumers, and feedback is instant. It's grueling, unforgiving, and takes so much from passionate chefs — maybe that's why I write about my favorite food moments in film and TV every year.

"Deadstream" is one of the best horror movies of 2022, one that gives the found footage genre a refreshing facelift — a Screenlife movie that feels purposeful. Directors Joseph and Vanessa Winter crafted a delightfully inventive, hilarious, spooky film that captures the essence of what Sam Raimi accomplished with "Evil Dead" but updated for modern times. As Matt Donato wrote in our review of "Deadstream," this is a "goofball, gross-out, grim-but-gleeful crowd pleaser."
The film follows man-baby buffoon Shawn Ruddy, a disgraced YouTuber trying to make a comeback by livestreaming his overnight stay at a haunted house — before realizing there may be actual ghosts in the house, which he upsets by being an insufferable idiot.
The film has a fantastic and painfully accurate portrayal of social media and the streamer landscape, from the way it mocks the fake apology videos of canceled YouTubers, to the dumb stunt videos and insufferable yet endlessly watchable personalities.

On January 6, 2023, “M3GAN” is released in theaters nationwide. The sci-fi comedy horror flick from director Gerard Johnstone stars Allison Williams as Gemma, a robotocist for a toy company who unexpectedly becomes the caretaker of her 8-year-old niece, Cady (Violet McGraw). In an effort to ease her stress and provide a companion for the youngster, Gemma pairs the child up with a M3GAN prototype to help keep her safe. Unfortunately, the doll takes on a life of it’s own!

The premise may sound absurd, but early reviews are overwhelmingly positive. It has an impressive freshness rating of 98 on Rotten Tomatoes with the consensus reading, “Unapologetically silly and all the more entertaining for it, M3GAN is the rare horror-comedy that delivers chuckles as effortlessly as chills.”

(Welcome to Scariest Scene Ever, a column dedicated to the most pulse-pounding moments in horror with your tour guides, horror experts Chris Evangelista and Matt Donato. In this edition, Matt makes a case against pregnancy in "The Children.")
Tom Shankland's kinderhorror meanie "The Children" isn't an actual reason to avoid childbirth. That's a joke. Although, I wouldn't recommend the film to newfound parents exploring the wonders of parenting. What occurs is along the lines of "Who Can Kill a Child?" and its remake "Come Out and Play," or "Children of the Corn," where innocence is a coverup for murderous intent. Doubly dreary around the holidays since a majority of Xmas traditions point towards making youngins happy.
"The Children" ranks high atop the list of anti-holiday horror movies. Instead of spending Christmas and New Year's partying or unwrapping presents, kiddies turn into killers who prey upon adults. Children couldn't be capable of such atrocious crimes,...

(Welcome to Scariest Scene Ever, a column dedicated to the most pulse-pounding moments in horror with your tour guides, horror experts Chris Evangelista and Matt Donato. In this edition, Chris goes into the basement with "Barbarian.")
Spoilers follow.
"Barbarian" is one of the best horror movies of 2022, and part of the fun is how the film plays with our expectations. Writer-director Zach Cregger is constantly pulling the rug out from under us, setting something up only to knock it down. And one of the scariest scenes in the film comes early on when we finally get a hint as to what's going on here. But it's just a taste of the madness and horror to come. Best of all, it's a lot of fun to watch.
The Setup
Tess (Georgina Campbell) is in Detroit for a job interview. She's booked an Airbnb-type location for her stay, but when she...

Anthology horror has been a staple of the genre for decades. Gaining popularity in the late 1950s with primetime episodes and evocative storylines on "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and "The Twilight Zone," these quick morality tales were easily digestible to mainstream audiences. In a time when film and television didn't yet have a complete stranglehold on pop culture, anthologies still retained the feeling of reading a collection of short stories. Many of the episodes were based on terrifying yarns penned by acclaimed authors such as Roald Dahl and Richard Matheson, resulting in some of the most memorable episodes like "Man From the South" starring Steve McQueen and the monster on a plane classic "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" featuring a very young, very paranoid William Shatner.
