Adam Devine, J.K. Simmons, Sam Richardson and Elsie Fisher will lend their voices to “Hypergalactic,” the CG animated family feature co-created by Naoto Oshima, best known for designing the original “Sonic the Hedgehog” for Sega, and Joseph Chou.
The English-language film, directed by David N. Weiss and now in post-production, marks the most ambition CG feature to date from Toei Animation. The Japanese studio was behind recent anime smash hits “The First Slam Dunk,” which grossed $279 million, and “One Piece Film: Red,” which has so far earned $246.6 million.
Charades are set to launch worldwide sales on “Hypergalatic” at Berlin’s European Film Market, alongside Iwashina Corporation founder Kevin Iwashina, who is also an advisor to Toei.

Our spiky hero no longer looks like a nightmarish experiment in avant garde taxidermy, but the cool, cuddly mascot we know and love
You can almost hear the sigh of relief from the global Sega fan community. The new Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer, which Paramount released this morning, is a giant improvement.
Our spiky hero no longer looks like a nightmarish experiment in avant garde taxidermy. The human teeth have been extracted. He has big doe eyes, not the sinister mini-peepers of the original trailer. The new design genuinely captures a lot of what original character designer Naoto Ohshima set out to achieve – a cool but cuddly mascot, infusing Japanese kawaii sensibilities with American attitude. His fur is bright, mimicking the famed Sega blue of the company’s classic arcade games. He is no longer absolutely terrifying, an important achievement for a family film.

The brilliant music of Sonic CD has led to a strange debate about localization.
For many, 1993’s Sonic CD represents the best and worst of Sega’s glory days. It’s a game that utilized the best technology available to deliver a fast, colorful, and ambitious experience that showcased Sega’s desire to do what “Nintendon’t.” Sadly, it was also a game that had the great misfortune of being available exclusively for the Sega CD, an “ambitious” CD add-on for the Genesis that promised to deliver more than the console ever could and is considered one of gaming’s more notable hardware failures.
Yet, the most fascinating thing about Sonic CD isn’t the way it so perfectly summarizes why Sega is arguably the most beloved console manufacturer that is no longer making video game consoles. No, the most fascinating thing about Sonic CD is...

It saw the pair struggling to ride as they explored one of the island’s most scenic roads, with winds blasting them from the side. At one point the duo tried to use the van that was being used to film them as shelter...read more...

Apparently the Big Island can lead to even bigger mistakes! As Wheel of Fortune continues filming at the Hilton Waikoloa Village in Hawaii, one contestant made quite the memorable error while competing on Tuesday's show. One female contestant shouted out the letter "l" as she tried to get one step closer to solving the puzzle. When host Pat Sajak revealed there weren't any in the puzzle, the next player got to pick a letter. Whether you want to believe it or not, he actually asked for "l" again. Can you say, epic fail?! While the crowd and even fellow contestants burst out into laughter, the man in question couldn't help but notice his mistake and bow his head...

For the first time in nearly a decade, Pixar Animation Studios is taking the year off. The Emeryville-Calif.-based company will not be releasing a film in 2014, and it also finds itself in an interesting position, striving to maintain its identity as a haven for bold original visions while at the same time seeing some of its biggest successes inevitably move into franchise and sequel terrain. Wednesday night representatives of the studio took over a theater in West Hollywood's Directors Guild of America (DGA) headquarters to present materials from one such original vision from "Monsters, Inc." and "Up" director Pete Docter: "Inside Out." The film is set for release exactly one year from now, on June 19, 2015. Producer Jonas Rivera quipped that such a seemingly long lead is "dog years" in animation time, where projects typically move at a glacial pace for years on end. When he and Docter finished...

When the body of pregnant Brittany Royal was found in the waters off the coast of Hawaii's Big Island last May, her boyfriend Boaz "Bo" Johnson went missing and immediately became the chief suspect in her strangulation murder. But a search for Johnson, 22, came up empty. Then strange anonymous signs posted on trees and a handwritten note to a local newspaper suggested he, too, was murdered in a business dispute. "If he isn't the murderer, that means he's dead," his sister, Sarah Johnson, told People shortly before the holidays. "So what do we have to look forward to?" This week...

Two points that exist diametrically opposite to each other on the earth's surface are called antipodes. With ¡Vivan las Antipodas!, Russian documentary filmmaker Victor Kossakovsky observes the inhabitants of four distinct land mass antipodes: Entre Rios, Argentina and Shanghai, China; Patagonia, Chile and Lake Baikal, Russia; Botswana and Big Island, Hawaii; Miraflores, Spain and Castle Point, New Zealand. Other than the obvious presence of the camera, Kossakovsky and his crew purposefully never interact with the film's subjects. The images speak for themselves -- well, with a little help from the gorgeous orchestration of Alexander Popov's score. Kossakovsky utilizes age-old cinematic techniques to establish visual relationships between the antipodes; communicating a variety of comparisons and juxtapositions to the audience without ever uttering a word. It may seem like Kossakovsky is not telling us what to think -- since he so adroitly avoids the use of narration or interviews -- but...

It's the final night of Sudden Death on American Idol. The guys in the competition so far haven't been spectacular. The remaining 10 will sing for the judges and then the judges, perhaps with the help of our pal Jimmy Iovine, will send half of them home.
Five will be left standing (because really, those stools are uncomfortable) and they'll join last week's winners in rounding out the top of this season's male contestants.
By the end of tonight, we'll have this season's Top 20 American Idol contestants and America will begin voting. Let's get to it...

More than two-thirds of Hawaii's state senators have signed onto a bill to protect celebrities from paparazzi, giving them power to sue over unwanted beach photos and other snapshots on the islands.
The bill's author says he's pushing the law at the request of Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler, the former "American Idol" judge who recently bought a new home in Maui.
A representative for Aerosmith declined comment late Thursday, saying Tyler was not immediately available.
Sen. Kalani English, a Democrat from Maui, told The Associated Press the so-called "Steven Tyler Act" will help Hawaii's tourism and film industries, encouraging famous people to come here without fear of being stalked by paparazzi.
"These are my constituents as well," English said. "Public figures have a right to reasonable privacy. There's a balance that we need to create."
The bill would open people up to civil lawsuits if they invade...

Zap2it: After leaving Australia, you spent a few years working in Los Angeles, and now you're "Hawaii Five-0" shooting in Hawaii. Are you enjoying it?
Alex O'Loughlin: It's interesting -- it's much closer to Australia. I don't mean geographically; it feels like Australia. It feels like Queensland or something, clean and cool. L.A. does not feel like Australia at all for me. So I kind of feel at home here. I love it. I love the pace, actually. The pace frustrates me occasionally, because I'm kind of zippy, but I get back to L.A. often enough to be stoked to come back here.
Zap2it: How do you like the warm weather?
Alex O'Loughlin: This [September] is a nice time of year. Midsummer, it can get gnarly, a bit hot. The only thing is, it doesn't get cold here, ever, and I miss that. In the desert,...

Roseanne Barr's reality series Roseanne's Nuts gets the shaft from Lifetime after just one season. Lifetime has killed off the Roseanne Barr reality series, as stated by Barr on her @TheRealRoseanne Twitter feed, reports Deadline. She said that “Roseanne’s Nuts has been cancelled, thanks everyone for watching!” The show started with a 0.7 rating among 18-49 year-olds but went down to 0.3 and was sent to the Friday at 10:00 p.m. low-traffic spot. The last season of the show wrapped last Friday. Quite funnily enough, on the official site under "About Roseanne's Nuts" we can find this: “Where in the world is Roseanne Barr?” Well...not on Lifetime anymore, clearly. This is what the series was about (Courtesy Lifetime's Official Roseanne's Nuts Site): Viewers of “Roseanne’s Nuts” will see Barr, who, after tiring of living in frenzied Los Angeles and everything associated with the city, abandons Southern...
