The great shake-up in cable TV continues, with Warner Bros. Discovery’s TruTV the latest channel to be overhauled.
The channel, best known for its comedy and reality shows, will shift its primetime lineup to a new sports slate beginning this coming Monday, March 11.
Moving forward, TruTV will be home to exclusive live games (including games in the upcoming March Madness college basketball tournament and MotoGP races) as well as alternative broadcasts of NBA, MLB and NHL games on TNT and TBS. It will also simulcast some of those games, as well.
Alternative telecasts (like ESPN’s Monday Night Football “Manningcast” or Amazon’s Dude Perfect Thursday Night Football option) have become quite popular in recent years, as sports broadcasters seek to bring in new, younger fans to their live events. Leagues, likewise, support having more coverage of their games.

“Book banning is the underbelly of suppression and hate,” declares Oscar-nominated filmmaker Trish Adlesic about the troubling and growing trend of banning books from public schools and libraries. Adlesic examines the effects of such efforts in the documentary “The ABCs of Book Banning,” which is nominated for Best Documentary Short at the 96th Academy Awards. Working with co-nominees Sheila Nevins and Nazenet Habtezghi, Adlesic crafts a film that gives voice to those most affected by book restrictions and bans: children. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“The ABCs of Book Banning” highlights the range of books targeted by conservative organizations throughout the nation. The audience hears from school aged children who wonder why adults are trying to take away their access to knowledge. The film is also bookended with a speech by 101-year-old Grace Linn, who addresses her local Florida school board meeting about the dangerous history of book bans...

There was no need to worry that Reba McEntire might mess up or bring any unnecessary flourishes to “The Star-Spangled Banner” when she performed the National Anthem prior to the Super Bowl on Sunday evening. Unlike anyone else who’d done it prior to the Bowl or any other major NFL game in recent memory, she brought a full half-century’s experience of singing the anthem to the occasion.
The year 2024 marks a special anniversary for the country superstar and her association with the song: She is often said to have been “discovered” 50 years ago when she sang it at the 1974 National Finals Rodeo in her home state of Oklahoma, when she was just 19.
McEntire’s latest rendition of the anthem was more fully orchestrated than some other recent versions — or even her own past readings — have been, with a pre-recorded horn section sending the song toward a big climax.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves is turning out to be a series that is interested in a very impressionistic portrayal of Bass, the heroic and lawful figure of the Wild West. Each episode focuses on a period, or rather, a specific event in Bass’s life, showing us an important stroke of the brush that helps complete the final portrait. The previous episodes had portrayed Bass’ tortured beginnings and his meeting with Deputy Linn, which gave him a chance to become a deputy himself. Lawmen: Bass Reeves Episode 3 focuses on the event that made Bass learn that this was truly a harsh world and that upholding the law wasn’t as ‘clean’ a duty as he thought it was. There were tough decisions to be made. He was even warned at one point that if he became a deputy, he wouldn’t survive for long, and if he did, he would become...

NBC’s The Voice Season 24 welcomed Reba McEntire as Blake Shelton’s country superstar replacement. While we greatly miss Shelton, McEntire is easily stepping into her role. Recently, she touched on fellow country-turned-pop sensation Taylor Swift’s current relationship status with Travis Kelce. And McEntire made it clear she’s (jokingly) not happy about what she’s hearing.

Reba McEntire is reflecting on her relationship with boyfriend Rex Linn, admitting that they didn’t fall in love the moment that they met.
In fact, the pair have known each other since 1991, when they worked together while starring in “The Gambler Returns: The Luck of the Draw”.
“My life right now is absolutely wonderful. I’m with the love of my life, Rex. We just have a wonderful time,” gushed McEntire, while sitting down with Et Canada’s Morgan Hoffman for a One-on-One interview at The New York Edition hotel. “My family is happy and healthy. I’m a very blessed person.”
The couple started dating in early 2020, but McEntire says it definitely “wasn’t” a love at first sight situation.

Attorneys for Jussie Smollett filed their appeal of his conviction on Wednesday, as they seek to keep him from having to go back to jail on hate crime hoax charges.
Smollett was released a year ago pending his appeal, after serving six days of his 150-day sentence. Attorneys for the former “Empire” actor were originally due to file his appellate brief last August, but have been granted five extensions of that deadline.
Smollett was convicted in December 2021 of lying to police when he claimed to have been assaulted by two men who shouted homophobic and racist slurs, poured a chemical substance on him, and put a rope around his neck.
After initially treating the case as a genuine hate crime, Chicago detectives ultimately concluded that Smollett had paid two men $3,500 to stage the attack.
In the appellate brief, Smollett’s attorneys argue that the trial judge, James Linn, made a series of reversible errors,...

Life changes as it happens. Mia Hansen-Løve’s One Fine Morning takes the various compartments of a woman’s life and allows them to act naturally, which is to say, to change: shifting, recurring and reflecting back on each other in ways that feel true to that life.
It’s a life situated in the everyday patterns of routine. Visits to an ailing father, who suffers from Benson’s syndrome, a degenerative neurological condition; and more visits to other relatives, including a mother (now divorced for over 20 years) and sister...

This review originally ran May 20, 2022, in conjunction with the film’s world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
Throughout her career, Mia Hansen-Løve has returned to a familiar milieu — the daily lives of women, drawing out a poignant beauty and humanist sense of drama in the quotidian rhythms of mothers as they go about their work, as well as their caretaking of children, parents and their own inner worlds.
There’s something fascinating, and indeed feminist, about simply watching these women, played by some of Europe’s most talented actresses, simply exist in the world, maintaining the delicate balance of day-to-day harmony despite the larger ups and downs that threaten to upend everything.
In “One Fine Morning,” Hansen-Løve’s latest, the woman in question is Sandra, played by Léa Seydoux, hair cropped into a pixie cut, clad in the jeans, sweatshirt and backpack befitting a young widowed mother caring for her daughter,...

The permanence of love, passion, and marital stability is often questioned in the directorial offerings and screenplays of French filmmaker Mia Hansen-Løve. Blending the familiar themes and the photography of "Things to Come" and "Goodbye First Love," is Hansen-Løve's "One Fine Morning" which is effused with the creator's motif of plain shots and featherweight dramatic touches that serves to enhance, not dilute nor cheapen, its emotional focuses in 35mm. This has worked in Hansen-Løve's craft because she lets the emotions unravel naturally as players process their fate and their drudgery.
In conjunction with Hansen-Løve's usual collaborators, the cinematographer Denis Lenoir and editor Marion Monnier, the aesthetic of "One Fine Morning" is just as un-fancied as the editing and the cinematography. But those have been assets to her work in favor of gleaning humanity and the brisk pace of life. Like in her previous works, director Hansen-Løve has a gentleness when...

I know Big Sky Season 3 is officially subtitled Deadly Trails. But in my head, I’m going with Three’s Company.
After all, the addition of Jensen Ackles’ Sheriff Beau Arlen has created the loveliest, prettiest, most fun dynamic among Cassie, Jenny and Beau. And while two of those three may end up as romantic partners as the episodes roll on, I’m very much enjoying the way they’re all interacting as the season gets underway.

Reba McEntire has joined the cast of Big Sky: Deadly Trails and is opening up about playing a darker character than what audiences would expect from her. The country star also teased if viewers would be able to see a musical performance as her character Sunny Barnes in the ABC drama.
“I get to hum a little bit, and sing a little but, but we’ll see,” McEntire said during the ABC TCA panel.
Showrunner and executive producer Elwood Reid said that “there may be a little space for her to sing.” However, given that Sunny is on a “pretty dark journey” her song might be a “murder ballad.” Reid also added that during the Country Music Awards this year, they are hoping to have “some fun country music stars coming in and cameo on the show.”
