In most cases, we toast to new beginnings. Whether it’s to ring in another year or celebrate a major milestone, the sound of clinking glasses symbolizes a new era. For young siblings Roderick (Zach Gilford) and Madeline Usher (Willa Fitzgerald), what they thought was a toast to success was also a toast to their own demise.
Mike Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher combines Edgar Allan Poe’s most famous poems and short stories into a haunting exploration of privilege and greed. After spending decades building a successful pharmaceutical company, Roderick (Bruce Greenwood) and Madeline (Mary McDonnell) are now forced to confront the skeletons in their closet, as each of their heirs die in brutal and mysterious ways. As the series finale reveals, these aren’t random freak accidents — they were all part of a deadly...

One choice. One selfish choice seals the Usher family’s fates forever when twins Roderick (Zach Gilford) and Madeline Usher (Willa Fitzgerald) meet an omnipotent harbinger of fate, Verna (Carla Gugino), at a bar on New Year’s Eve 1979 in Mike Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher.
They’ll get the whole world — running Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, making more money than they could ever imagine, literally getting away with murder — all sans consequences. But the next generation will have to foot the bill. “When you’re done, at the end of it all… just before you would have died anyway, your bloodline dies with you,” Verna offers them. The two scrappy Ushers, who came into the world together, would leave the world together, atop a hill of riches, excess… and bodies.

“This is life’s ultimate cruelty. It offers us a taste of youth and vitality, and then it makes us witness our own decay.”
Is there anything more terrifying than the relentless passage of time? It’s a bitter truth that just when we’ve become accustomed to our bodies, the sands of time turn and we’re forced to watch them slowly break down in a cruel march towards inevitable death. But what if there were a way to stop the aging process – a potion that would return us to our peak physical condition and hold us there until the end of time? Would we take it? And would we eventually find that the blessing of perpetual life is actually a curse? No film explores this dilemma quite like Death Becomes Her. Neon, the indie studio behind “Parasite” and “Anatomy of a Fall,” has tapped the producers of “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” Jon Read and Allison Rose Carter, to lead their growing production arm. Read and Carter are the co-founders of Savage Rose Films.
The pact comes as Neon has moved more aggressively into developing and producing its own movies, instead of focusing purely on acquiring completed films. The company’s recent foray into production have included Brandon Cronenberg’s “Infinity Pool,” Bishal Dutta’s “It Lives Inside,” Theda Hammel’s “Stress Positions,” Jazmin Jones’s “Seeking Mavis Beacon” and Tilman Singer’s “Cuckoo.” This new in-house focus also includes upcoming projects from Joshua Oppenheimer, Boots Riley and David Robert Mitchell. When Nathan Silver’s mother was in her mid-60s, she decided to have a bat mitzvah. As the indie filmmaker started telling people that his mother was embarking on a rite of passage usually reserved for teenagers, a friend urged him to turn her story into a movie. Now, “Between the Temples,” a screwball comedy inspired by mom’s coming-of-age ceremony, will premiere at Sundance, with Carol Kane and Jason Schwartzman playing an elderly bat mitzvah student and a depressed cantor who forge an unlikely bond.
“It’s one from the heart,” says Silver. “It’s a story that touches on many aspects of my life.”
It also gives Kane and Schwartzman, who so often steal scenes in supporting roles, a chance to shine as leads. Signing on required a leap of faith for Kane because Silver’s scripts, which he calls “scriptments” and likens to novellas, aren’t traditional.

President Joe Biden paid tribute to Norman Lear, the pioneering writer, producer and director who died on Tuesday at age 101.
Biden called Lear a “transformational force in American culture” whose shows “redefined television with courage, conscience, and humor, opening our nation’s eyes and often our hearts.”
Lear was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Bill Clinton in 1999. At the time, Clinton said that Lear “held up a mirror to American society and changed the way we look at it.”
Biden also noted Lear’s decades of political advocacy, saying that he “fought directly for free speech, a woman’s right to choose, the environment, voting rights, and more.”
Biden’s complete statement is below:

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for The Fall of the House of Usher and the works of Edgar Allen Poe.
In recent years, Mike Flanagan has become known for emotional adaptations of classic horror literature. After a series of original films, Flanagan brought Stephen King’s famously unfilmable novel Gerald’s Game to life then set his sights on the work of Shirley Jackson. His Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House dramatically expanded the legendary story and brought us all to tears with an intimate examination of parenting through the years. Flanagan followed this with The Haunting of Bly Manor, a mind-bending take on The Turn of the Screw, and The Midnight Club, a spooky mashup of Christopher Pike’s YA bibliography.
For his latest Netflix series, Flanagan tackles the work of Edgar Allan Poe. Following the wealthy Usher family, the director takes some of his trademark liberties to...

Elizabeth Zott's past comes into focus as she tries to piece together her future on Lessons In Chemistry Season 1 Episode 6, "Poirot".
While Elizabeth handles issues in her career, things are changing in her life at home with Mad and her friendship with Harriet.
Although Lessons In Chemistry Season 1 is nearly finished, the loose ends of Elizabeth's life have been slowly coming together throughout the final episodes.
Elizabeth, content with her daughter Madeline and her success on Supper At Six, seems to have it all for a fleeting moment.
When she starts having flashbacks about her brother, John, things begin to come undone for Elizabeth, though the difficulties provide some much-needed clarity.
Dealing with grief has never been Elizabeth's strong suit, but reaching out helps her realize that communication will benefit everyone.
Lessons In Chemistry Season 1 hasn't been shy about letting the viewer know its intentions.

A sexual encounter between two teenagers turns into a bloodbath with one or both of them no longer amongst the living. A few friends passing the dutchie discover how hazardous smoking is for your health when a maniac with a crossbow turns their bodies into compost. And so on, and so on. Horror films traffic in people paying for their sins. Most importantly, the genre redefines sinful behavior as time progresses and societies shift like tectonic plates. Those teens having sex and friends smoking weed fare better today than 40 years ago.
But the one transgression that horror consistently confronts? Generational sins. Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher continues the genre’s tradition in which older family members make momentary decisions with little or no regard for the future. And when push comes to shove, the past catches up to their progeny, leaving blood stains and residue in its wake.

In a moment of change, Elizabeth Zott advocates for herself on Lessons In Chemistry Season 1 Episode 5, "CH₃COOH".
While Elizabeth embraces it, her daughter Madeline has more difficulty accepting change as their dynamic shifts suddenly.
Elizabeth Zott's life has changed more than once throughout Lessons In Chemistry Season 1.
From the painful end of her PhD program to the blissful start of her relationship with Calvin Evans, Elizabeth's life has been defined by her relationships with others.

What if Edgar Allan Poe had penned "Succession"? The result might be "The Fall of the House of Usher," the latest streaming terror from Mike Flanagan ("Midnight Mass"). Flanagan, once again working with his usual stable of players, takes a "shut up and play the hits" approach to Poe here, dipping into the legendary author's work to reference nearly everything you can think of -- "The Raven," "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Masque of the Red Death," "Murders in the Rue Morgue," and on and on. Even Poe's famous detective character C. Auguste Dupin has a part to play, only now he's been upgraded from a sleuth to a crusading district attorney, played with calm gravitas by Carl Lumbly.
At the center of it all is an obscenely wealthy, and morally corrupt family of siblings, all of whom are under the thumb of their ruthless patriarch, Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood). Flanagan...

Hope Valley is just like anywhere else.
People are living and learning along the way. Mistakes are made, and promises are broken, but through the spirit of community and relying on one another, they find a way to forgive and move on.
When Calls the Heart Season 10 Episode 8 suggests a more significant story coming as Rosemary hopes to make Hope Valley an essential stop on the political campaign trail at the same time Mr. Montague's team is tearing up the countryside, and a large trestle bridge begins production outside of town.
Hope Valley is growing, and Rosemary recognizes that their voices have a right to be heard just like everyone else's.
Part of her plan to lure the governor to Hope Valley to hear their voices is to make them heard musically.
Through their brief experience with tourism, they've learned that you have to make your little slice of heaven...

Near the climax of Richard Strauss’ opera “Salome,” the title character performs the Dance of the Seven Veils for her stepfather, King Herod. The dance is done as a barter: In exchange, Herod will behead the man Salome loves so that she may kiss his lips. The Dance of the Seven Veils finds Salome swaying and whirling erotically with a set of scarves, landing somewhere between an object of sexual fascination for her onlookers and a lovestruck woman reaching for agency through movement.
“Seven Veils,” written and directed by Atom Egoyan (“The Sweet Hereafter”), follows an opera director who is staging a production of “Salome” and, like the tragic heroine, clashes with a series of men in her quest to recover a sense of control. This slippage between art and life, sincerity and trickery, is key to deriving some sense of meaning from this strange and sultry but ultimately exasperating film,...

When Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson first moved to Los Angeles, working as a dog walker and P.F. These days, however, it’s where they go to break story on their Emmy-nominated drama, Yellowjackets. “It turns out that this place is kind of a writers’ haunt,” says Lyle, next to one of the Tudor building’s dormant fireplaces on a recent March afternoon. “I’ve seen Dan Harmon here a few times. Julianne Moore’s new role sees her touting a gun on screen, for the first time in 15 years.
The Oscar winner takes the role of Madeline in Sharper, a movie she also co-produced. She co-stars with Sebastian Stan and John Lithgow in the thriller, which premieres in selected cinemas on February 10, before launching on Apple TV+ a week later.
It will be novel to see Moore using a weapon, as she has avoided taking such roles for over a decade – in line with her activism for gun control in the US. Her last known role with a firearm was in 2007, in the thriller Next.
She told the Times in London: “It’s not something I feel drawn to at all. I don’t find it appealing.”
What made Sharper okay? Apparently, that it offers a kind of morality tale, with everything in the story going wrong as a result of her use of a weapon.
The Oscar winner takes the role of Madeline in Sharper, a movie she also co-produced. She co-stars with Sebastian Stan and John Lithgow in the thriller, which premieres in selected cinemas on February 10, before launching on Apple TV+ a week later.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from Season 3 of “Emily in Paris.”
The process of designing the costumes for Season 3 of “Emily in Paris” started with a bang.
Or rather, with bangs. Lily Collins, who plays the Netflix dramedy’s title role, first cut some fringe into her hair in her own life before the look made its way into the show. Attempting to turn over a new leaf after the dilemmas created by the Season 2 finale, Season 3 begins with Emily feeling manic and grabbing a pair of scissors — an ordeal that costume designer Marilyn Fitoussi found inspiring.
“Everything starts with Lily’s bangs. She sent me a picture, and suddenly, it reminded me of French icons of the ’60s,” Fitoussi says. “New wave movies. You have Jean-Luc Godard, you have Brigitte Bardot, you have Jane Birkin — all these delicate, graceful silhouettes.” I said, ‘Jesus, she looks like Françoise Hardy!
