Serj Tankian is set to release his memoir, Down with the System, on Tuesday (May 14th). In an advance excerpt, the singer reveals that System of a Down auditioned a new vocalist after he had asked out of the band.
In the past, Tankian has admitted that he was responsible for the the band’s long hiatus from 2006 to 2011, largely due to his desire to step away from touring, as well as his creative differences with singer-guitarist Daron Malakian.
Tankian has also spoken openly about his chronic back troubles that make it difficult for him to tour, plus he has expressed distaste for the touring life in general. However, the passages from his autobiography shed new light on how close he was to leaving the band entirely.
In fact, it was Tankian himself who suggested the band find a new singer in 2017, as he notes in the book excerpt shared...

TikToker Mac Glocky has quickly made a name for himself on the social media platform for re-imagining songs in the style of different bands. System of a Down are one of his go-to’s, and a recent viral clip sees him interpreting The B-52’s classic “Rock Lobster” a la Soad.
“This one is cursed,” Glocky warns in the introduction. “This one is definitely cursed.”
More like cursedly accurate. Mac overdubs himself to create the effect of a full band, first opening the song with the iconic “Rock Lobster” riff played through a heavily affected guitar tone, as Soad’s Daron Malakian is wont to do.
From there, Glocky lays down his best Serj Tankian impression, and it’s a good one, nailing all Serj’s dramatic delivery and signature mid-verse vocal exaggerations. Glocky clearly has a lot of fun putting on the impersonation — and he’s well practiced. His channel has multiple Soad re-imaginings,...

The straw-man argument at the center of Truth to Power, a documentary about the art and activism of System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian, is: “Can music change the world?” If you know anything about Tankian — or Fela Kuti, Pete Seeger, Billie Holiday, N.W.A, Ludwig van Beethoven, and on and on — the answer is self-evident. But once filmmaker Garin Hovannisian moves past this question and begins showing how Tankian and his bandmates have improved the status of their ancestral homeland, Armenia, the power of truth starts hitting its marks.

System of a Down report that they have raised $600,000 in aid for Armenians affected by the war in Nagorno-Karabakh (a.k.a. Artsakh). The group reunited earlier this month to record two new songs — their first in 15 years — to raise awareness about the humanitarian crisis in the region, a small ethnic-Armenian area within Azerbaijan that is currently under siege.
“We are overwhelmed with gratitude for your incredible support of our campaign for the people of Artsakh, and for helping us raise over $600,000 in donations to provide for those in dire need via the Armenia Fund,...

It took a war for System of a Down to record new music. After seeing the country of Azerbaijan start a conflict with Armenia in September, the musicians, who are all of Armenian descent, rushed into the studio to record two new songs, “Protect the Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz,” to draw attention to the crisis in their ancestral homeland.
The band will donate proceeds from the songs, which come out Friday, to aid Armenians, and it is soliciting fans to donate to the Armenia Fund, which provides humanitarian relief to the region.

System of a Down guitarist Daron Malakian created an eerie nightmare world full of skulls, gun-toting devils and grimy imagery of him and his band members melting into darkness for his video for “Guns Are Loaded,” a track off his Scars on Broadway side project’s recent Dictator album.
“‘Guns Are Loaded’ isn’t necessarily about specific things, but more about a feeling or emotion,” he tells Rolling Stone. “The song is about a feeling of anger, a feeling of a breaking point, or times when the world is coming down on you.

System of a Down guitarist Daron Malakian, who also fronts the side project Scars on Broadway, recently revisited his past in an interview where he broke apart some of the band’s biggest hits and recounted his history with music. “I started collecting records when I was maybe 4,” he says in the clip, part of Ernie Ball’s String Theory series. “I would always drag my mom to the record store. It’s been 13 years since System of a Down released their last record – for a variety of reasons, though the alt-metal band’s members claim to get along – so this album from guitarist Daron Malakian’s other project represents a welcome return to the SOaD sound. Although Scars on Broadway’s previous releases were a little more straightforward hard rock, Dictator contains a dozen humorous, pogo-ready rockers that Malakian recorded by himself in 2012 and shelved, thinking System might record them, until now. Standouts include the springy “Lives” (a celebration of...

One of modern country’s greatest songwriters, the author of Tim McGraw’s winning “Humble & Kind” echoes its themes here, musing on verities of family and community with matter-of-factly hard-earned, time-ripened wisdom. The craft is remarkable and deceptively understated, with fine-turned phrases glinting like dewdrops. Highlight: “The Lot Behind St. Mary’s,” a song about getting busy in blue jeans while in the literal (and figurative) shadow of the local church. Parlor game: Guessing which songs will get remade by mainstreamers wanting an artistic upgrade.

The members of System of a Down are finally detailing why they haven’t issued any new music since 2005’s Mezmerize and Hypnotize albums after more than a decade of speculation. First, guitarist Daron Malakian – who is promoting an upcoming album by his side project Scars on Broadway – said in an interview that the group had to “beg” frontman Serj Tankian to make those two records since the singer felt like he was “out” at that time. Now the vocalist has posted a lengthy Facebook message that lifts the veil on what has stopped them.

I saw Rob Zombie perform once, it was at Ozzfest 1999. The lineup that year was positively insane, with bands the likes of Deftones, Slayer, Primus featuring Buckethead, System of a Down, Slipknot, Godsmack, Drain Sth, Fear Factory, and Black Sabbath all throwing up the horns for one hell of an afternoon worth of loud, pulse-pounding rock n roll. I intentionally skipped seeing The Secret Life Of Pets, and I'm still not sure if I'm going to. While they first pulled me in by playing System of a Down's "Pogo" in one of their trailers, Comcast went on this weird promotion stint of the film and it made me uneasy about watching it. Why does Comcast want me to watch it so bad? Is there some subtext that says I should become a lifelong subscriber to their cable network? It's dumb, but it skeeved me out just enough to miss it when it was in theaters... Plus, I don't have kids so I can get away with not seeing this one.
For that reason those who have seen the film will have to validate Screen Junkies' Honest Trailer of the film in the comments. Even though I haven't seen the film, I still chuckled at this one!

Skrillex left many fans scratching their heads when he announced in June that he would be opening for rock band Guns N’ Roses during their tour stop in Houston. It seemed like an odd pairing, as most Guns N’ Roses fans probably don’t view anything without a guitar as music while the average Skrillex fan was probably left wondering “Who’s Guns N’ Roses?” Despite the polarizing nature of the lineup, the show indeed went on and now some video has surfaced to give us a glimpse of the performance.
Throughout his set, Skrillex takes the opportunity to mash up his love for metal with a number of Edm bangers, mixing in plenty of rock artists like Metallica, Rage Against The Machine, System Of A Down and more alongside his characteristic dubstep workouts.

On Thursday evening, Adele's somber — and frankly, quite stunning — "Someone Like You" video premiered, and once we had finished wiping the tears from our eyes, we quickly realized that director Jake Nava really deserves a video Oscar or something.
Not only did he deliver a video that perfectly matches the song's heartbroken, haunted feel (not an easy feat), but, whether you know it or not, the British-born Nava has also been responsible for some of the greatest pop clips in recent memory, only adding to a resume that stretches back to the early '90s (and includes work for everyone from System of a Down to the Spice Girls).
And sure, while the eye-catching clips being churned out by Lady Gaga tend to grab the headlines (since, you know, it's Gaga), what makes Nava's work so impressive is that, rarely, if ever, does he make the same video twice. In fact,...

With Chinese Democracy now a reality, hard rock fans can look to a System Of A Down reunion as their new great lost cause. Since its hiatus began in 2006, the band has essentially split in two: Daron Malakian and John Dolmayan have formed the lamentable Scars On Broadway, while Serj Tankian has undertaken an unpredictable, yet often rewarding, solo career. His newest album, the sprawling, almost painfully eclectic Imperfect Harmonies, is ambitious to a fault: It seems like there’s nothing Tankian doesn’t want to accomplish in the space of a single album (except, unfortunately for his old-school ...
