The Walking Dead: Red Machete is one of the numerous media spawned from AMC’s The Walking Dead. The webisode series explores the origin of Mandy, the infamous red machete used by Rick Grimes and several others to slay Gareth and a myriad of walkers. The red-handled machete has a special place in The Walking Dead franchise, so much so that a separate screen project was created for it. Aside from Red Machete, other web series based on The Walking Dead are Torn Apart (2011), Cold Storage (2012), and The Oath (2013). A cult classic American post-apocalyptic horror television series, The...

Nicholas Simon is busier than ever. The Thailand-based American producer has had a very productive 2023 thus far with all the various projects he’s been involved in via his production services company Indochina Productions making their mark. Ben Wheatley’s Meg 2: The Trench did solid business at the global box office, Gareth Edwards’ The Creator became a hot topic in the industry due to its frugal budget and stunning use of real-life locations and VFX and Darren Aronofsky’s Postcard from Earth has wowed the crowds as the first film specifically made for the new $2.3 billion Sphere in Las Vegas.
After a tough few years for Asian film and TV production due to Covid, Simon sees the industry ramping back up in the region, attracted by proactive government incentives in places like Thailand and Japan, but also continued spending by the likes of Netflix, Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime Video.

Season one of Netflix's period drama series, "Bridgerton" - based on the book series of the same name - left us hot and bothered, and dare we say, burning for more. Yet the show managed to outdo itself with season two, which followed the even more slow-burning relationship between Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma. Season one of the prequel series "Queen Charlotte" also gave us plenty of steamy love scenes and heart-wrenching romance to tide us over while we wait for "Bridgerton" season three, which will focus on Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton.
"Bridgerton" has its fair share of memorable quotes, which don't always make for the best pickup lines on Tinder, but are a lot of fun to reference on the regular. However, every line in the series is indebted to author Julia Quinn, who clearly knows how to write a tension-filled, blush-inducing romance.

Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator,” in theaters now, is a unique kind of sci-fi blockbuster from a major studio in that, while it looks like it cost a lot to make, the “Rogue One” director and his filmmaking team’s indie spirit and approach to the production actually kept the budget of the 20th Century Studios film under $100 million. Here’s how they did it.
The film is a tale set in the distant sci-fi future, where a war against artificial intelligence rages on. The U.S. is almost completely anti-ai while New Asia, a region of southeast Asia, still allows it. A former special operative (played by John David Washington), is tasked with tracking down the AI’s secret weapon: a little kid (Madeleine Yuna Voyles) who has the power to control technology.

Oscar-winning cinematographer Greig Fraser was “devastated” when Warner Bros. announced that “Dune: Part Two” was shifting its release date from Nov. 2023 to March 2024.
“I was really ready to start talking about it,” he tells Variety. However, the move means he can focus his attention on his other film, Gareth Edwards’ $80 million visual spectacular “The Creator.”
Fraser shared co-cinematographer duties with Oren Soffer on the film, taking an experimental approach to shooting futuristic landscapes. The production aimed to create the grandness and visual scale of a huge blockbuster film, but on a more modest budget. And he achieved it.
“Gareth and wanted to maximize everyone’s toil on this,” Fraser shares. “So, when we put two actors in a room together with a camera, we looked at how many people we really needed standing outside.”
Next, the pair spent extensive time ahead of production figuring out the infrastructure of the shoot.

Gareth Edwards has rubbished claims that he lost control of 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story'.The 48-year-old filmmaker helmed the 2016 sci-fi spin-off flick before Tony Gilroy was hired to oversee extensive reshoots and has now hit out at the "total inaccuracy" of claims that he was sidelined during the closing stages of production.During an appearance on Kcrw’s ‘The Business’ podcast, Gareth said: "The stuff that's out there on the internet about what happened on that film – there is so much inaccuracy about the whole thing. "Tony [Gilroy] came in, and he did a lot of great work, for sure. No doubt about it. But we all worked together until the entire last minute of that movie. The very last thing that we filmed in the pickup shoot was the Darth Vader corridor scene. I did all of that stuff."Edwards took a lengthy break from filmmaking before returning...

Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator” was a resourceful sci-fi endeavor with an $80 million production budget, but its visuals are on par with epic blockbusters that cost three times that amount. Rather than shoot on a studio backlot, the filmmaker behind “Godzilla” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” opted to shoot in eight different countries, including Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia and Japan.

Visual effects supervisor at Industrial Light and Magic (Ilm) Jay Cooper and supervising sound editor Erik Aadahl explain how the setpiece came together.
“There was nothing temped in, it was just production dialogue and nothing else,” Aadahl explained. “It was an amazing blank canvas to start working with. There were no visual effects, just a title that said ‘Tank on the Hill.

In a short but intriguing interview held by Digital Cinema Report, ‘The Creator’ Dp, Oren Soffer, elaborated on the making. As explained by the film director Gareth Edwards regarding the guerrilla-style filmmaking approach used to shoot the movie, the tools were also confirmed. It’s amazing to reveal that this $80,000,000 budget sci-fi movie was shot on these affordable and reachable tools: Sony FX3, Ronin RS2, Atomos Ninja, Kowa 75mm anamorphic, and ProRes Raw.
Sony FX3, Ronin RS2, Atomos Ninja, Kowa 75mm Anamorphic, and ProRes Raw Shot on Sony FX3 – Guerrilla-style filmmaking
Y.M.Cinema was the first to report that this mega-budget Hollywood sci-fi production was shot on a prosumer camera, Sony FX3. As opposed to what many have thought, the Arri Alexa 65 was not involved in this project. The use of the Sony FX3 has contributed a lot to the desired style that Director Gareth Edwards was eager for.

The Creator is the latest from filmmaker Gareth Edwards. It’s a bold new sci-fi feature that examines the relationship between humanity and AI. Setting this fascinating story in the future with such fantastical elements offers up an impressive effort from Edwards. The film stars John David Washington, Madeleine Yuna Voyles, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, and Sturgill Simpson, as well as a terrific performance from Allison Janney. It is a thought-provoking look at a subject matter that continues to make headlines, with a sci-fi twist thrown in.
We recently had the great pleasure of sitting down with Gareth in person. The filmmaker discussed why he took on this particular story. As well, the relevance of it has undoubtedly become far more fitting as of late. He opened up about that and continued to work in the world of science fiction. One of the best things about the film is the...

Gareth Edwards is not interested in making a sequel to 'The Creator'.The 48-year-old director has helmed the sci-fi thriller with artificial intelligence at the centre of the story but does not want to expand into a series as he loves endings as a film fan.In an interview with Screen Rant, Gareth said: "We had a lot of material. We shot a lot. And okay, so look, I would love to go back to this world. There are so many things that I didn't get to do that I would absolutely love to do."But my girlfriend's a massive, when we sit and we have some dinner or something, let's watch something. Soon, the never-ending barrage of films based on existing IP will be briefly interrupted when "The Creator" debuts. "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" director Gareth Edwards is at the helm for this futuristic adventure, which explores the highly relevant issue of AI and its relationship to humans. But as well as touching on real-world issues and attempting to inject some humanity into its fantastical narrative, "The Creator" is also an all-out action spectacle.
In a behind-the-scenes video from Industrial Light and Magic, one of the VFX houses that worked on "The Creator," Edwards says, "My favorite cinema is very visually driven. It's not like a play. It's like a dream," adding that he'd aimed to create "a really insane, rich, visual journey." John David Washington, who stars as ex-special forces agent Joshua, certainly seemed impressed by the results, adding that he admired the "magical realism that [Edwards] was able to execute.

Gareth Richards died in a car crash in April of this year. Now he has been honoured at the Edinburgh Comedy Fringe Festival in Scotland, UK, becoming the first ever recipient of the Victoria Wood award.
The BBC reports that Richards, who had been appearing at the Fringe Festival since 2010, was due to perform again this year before he was killed in April. Instead, his friends Dan Ward and Mark Simmons staged “A Show for Gareth Richards” in his name, recruiting some of the country’s biggest comedy names to perform.
The show raised almost £20,000 which will go to a trust fund for Richards’ two sons.
Ward told the BBC: “It feels really sensational to have won this award for Gareth.
“Victoria Wood was the queen of musical comedy, and Gareth was our legend.

Hayden Christensen and Diego Luna have never met, but as Christensen puts it, they’ve occupied the “same galaxy” for years. Christensen rocketed from teenage obscurity in Canada when George Lucas cast him as Anakin Skywalker for 2002’s “Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones” and 2005’s “Revenge of the Sith,” which chronicled the young Jedi’s transformation into the iconic villain Darth Vader. The Mexican-born Luna — who rose to prominence in Alfonso Cuarón’s 2001 coming-of-age masterpiece “Y tu mamá también” — joined “Star Wars” for 2016’s “Rogue One,” a prequel about the band of rebel spies, led by Luna’s Cassian Andor, that steal the plans for the Death Star.
Both men thought their “Star Wars” journeys ended with those films — in Luna’s case, because his character dies — but it turns out they were merely frozen in carbonite. Christensen, 42, returned last year as both Anakin and Vader...

The press release and IMDb page for The Artifice Girl describe it like this “ A team of special agents discovers a revolutionary new computer program to bait and trap online predators. After teaming up with the program’s troubled developer, they soon find that the AI is rapidly advancing beyond its original purpose.” It’s also tagged “Mystery” “Sci-Fi” and “Thriller”. Sounds like a potentially exciting crime film with some topical AI elements, right? Not exactly.
Deena is asking Siri the difference between right and wrong. Unsurprisingly her virtual assistant doesn’t have an answer. Her partner Amos arrives with Gareth, played by The Artifice Girl’s writer/director Franklin Ritch. It seems the two agents want to ask him some questions about some pictures found on his computer.
That’s when he drops a bombshell on them.

“Bridgerton” author Julia Quinn encourages fans to look at the bright side of Benedict’s love story being pushed back for Colin and Penelope’s in the next season.
Season 3 of the Netflix drama series will adapt the fourth book in Quinn’s series, “Romancing Mister Bridgerton” which features Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlin) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) instead of the storyline from the third book, “An Offer from a Gentleman.”
“I think they had just felt they had laid down so much groundwork because we already know Penelope,” Quinn told Business Insider of the shift in narrative.

It’s a real study that Gareth cites in his call to Dermot O’Leary’s radio show. Franklin Ritch’s AI Sci-Fi, The Artifice Girl, doesn’t just make do with the unbelievably small budget; it soars overhead anything the bigwig names and a grand production could’ve ever aspired to put together. What plays out more as a stage play and makes its limitations spring up as boons is at its most impressive when it grapples with the irony of its own device—the irony being how transcendentally existential and grounded the tension is while the subject matter punches the wall and demands more adrenaline. It’s almost as though it were Joyce’s ‘Araby’ when it comes to the disillusionment of stakes, taking nothing away from the bigger conflicts at hand while prioritizing the more philosophical disputes where ethics and rationalizations of motives are submerged in an ongoing battle. The Artifice Girl, while celebrating the phenomenal performances of each actor involved, finds its footing in...

This debut feature dissects the ethical dilemmas that arise when an AI is used to entrap paedophiles, but it fails to translate its ideas into a cogent argument
Probing the ethical implications surrounding the use of AI, Franklin Ritch’s debut feature hinges on a high-concept premise: an entirely digital avatar of a young girl named Cherry (Tatum Matthews) is used as bait to trap paedophiles in online chatrooms. Without the signature spectacle of the sci-fi genre, The Artifice Girl is a markedly low-key and small-scale endeavour, steeped in philosophical musings that ultimately seem stagey rather than cinematic.
Divided into three chapters spanning decades, the film moves through a series of single locations. It starts in a police interrogation room where Ritch’s Gareth, Cherry’s creator, is questioned by Deena (Sinda Nichols) and Amos (David Girard), members of a taskforce combatting child sexual abuse. ‘The Artifice Girl’ Review: A Thought-Provoking Speculative Drama About AI Bait For Online Predators
Artificial Intelligence has been increasingly in the news of late, with observers worried that it will soon become difficult for teachers to tell if students actually completed a project themselves (or a program did it for them), for anyone to recognize whether a supposed breaking evidential video is in fact a deepfake, and so forth. “The Artifice Girl,” however, frames the problems raised by ever-growing technological sophistication in a familiar narrative framework: that of the machine intelligence that begins to surpass its human “masters.”
Unlike portrayals from “2001” to “Ex Machina” and beyond, however, Franklin Ritch’s debut feature does not treat that dynamic in thriller terms, as a hostile takeover. Instead, this smaller-scaled speculative fiction is more concerned with ethics, as pondered in a series of dialogue sequences that aren’t static but might also have worked on stage, and require nothing in the way of FX. The results may...

Multi-hyphenate writer, director, and star Franklin Ritch introduces a science fiction chamber piece in The Artifice Girl, a heady thriller centered around advanced tech. The inciting mystery initially presents as a high-concept thriller but soon gives way to a deceptively complex and affecting sci-fi parable. It’s in the measured layering of complicated character work and ethical conundrums that Ritch’s feature eventually finds its magic.
The Artifice Girl begins as a contained crime thriller set in an interrogation room. Within, special agents Deena (Sinda Nichols) and Amos (David Girard) aggressively cross examine their suspect, Gareth (Ritch), about both his career and online activities. The interrogation leads the agents to deduce the savvy tech guru Gareth of dabbling in pedophilia, specifically in monitoring and baiting predators with a young preteen girl named Cherry (Tatum Matthews). It turns out they’re not too far off; Gareth is indeed using Cherry as...

There has been an outpouring of grief by British comedians for Gareth Richards, the popular stand-up comic and broadcaster who has died aged 41 from injuries sustained in a car accident last month.
Richards, who was a regular on the UK comedy circuit with annual trips to the Edinburgh fringe, was best known for his work with Frank Skinner. The pair co-hosted a show on Absolute Radio for two years between 2009 and 2011.
Skinner’s show on Sunday was a tribute, which he introduced movingly:
“There’s been lots of beautiful messages about Gareth and his family have been very kind to us and kept us informed about the details of his struggle but look, Gareth didn’t make it.
“Gareth didn’t make it and we will miss him intensely.
“He was a very kind, gentle, funny, fascinating man and I can’t believe that he…

Frank Skinner tearfully revealed on his radio show that his former co-host Gareth Richards is fighting for his life.
The broadcaster broke down in tears on Saturday (1 April) while telling Absolute Radio listeners that Richards was involved in a “very big road accident” earlier this week.
He raised the subject at the end of his show, saying: “One thing you have to learn to do in this line of work is to put on a false front and the show must go on, and that’s what happened this morning.”
Fighting back tears, Skinner said: “Gareth was in a very big road accident this week and it’s not looking great for Gareth. He is in hospital and he’s fighting but it’s not looking great.”
Richards, who is a comedian, was reportedly in a serious collision near Heathrow airport on the M25.
