Few titles which will have been presented at this Friday’s MipDrama look as ingenious in their invention as “Agatha Christie’s Hjerson.”
Anyone looking for a series of novels in the Poirot or Marple vein will look in vain. Sven Hjerson appears in multiple Christie works, but always via (often disparaging) comments made by his creator, fictional crime novelist Ariadne Oliver, a friend of Poirot’s whom Christie invented to let off steam about the travails of crime writing.
Despite being her most popular detective, Oliver would like to kill him off, she says. That’s because she’s made him a foreigner and receives letters from readers complaining about the inaccuracy of her descriptions of him: a fate suffered by Christie with Poirot.
Many decades later, Oliver must be rolling in her grave. Her master sleuth Sven Hjerson has now become the protagonist of an eight-part TV series...

Swedish broadcaster TV4 and its pan-Nordic streaming service C More are joining forces with Åsa Lantz, the author of “Selma,” to develop an untitled “Crown”-style drama series about the Swedish royal family and current monarch King Carl XVI Gustaf.
The series is being developed by Banijay-owned production banner Filmlance, producer of the original Nordic Noir milestone “Bron”/”Broen” (“The Bridge”), along with TV4 and C More. It will shed light on Carl XVI Gustaf, charting his journey from heir to the throne to his life as Sweden’s current monarch.
Lantz is co-writing the series, drawing inspiration from exclusive material documenting the childhood of Carl XVI Gustaf. The series is a passion project for Lantz who has been researching the material for several years.

Hans Rosenfeldt, the creator and lead writer of Nordic Noir milestone “Broen” (“The Bridge”) and ITV and Netflix’s International Emmy winner “Marcella,” is set to see his first solo novel, “When Crying Wolf,” developed for the small screen by TV4 and CMore Entertainment.
Rosenfeldt’s first solo novel — after six crime novels penned with Michael Hjorth and co-writing on series such as “The Bridge” and “Marcella” — “When Crying Wolf” is set in Haparanda, Sweden’s nearly subarctic border region with Finland, where human remains are found inside a wolf. Police officer Hannah Wester traces them to a drug deal that went wrong in Finland.

Sven Hjerson, the debonair Scandinavian master detective invented by crime writer Ariadne Oliver, a character in Agatha Christie’s novels, will get his own series, set in modern-day Stockholm.
In “Agatha Christie’s Sven Hjerson,” Hanna Alström plays Klara Sandberg, a former trash TV producer who successfully pitches a true-life crime show starring Hjerson, who would solve a real crime each week. The new show may reset Sandberg’s career and life, but the only problem is that she has never met Hjerson.
The show stars Johan Rheborg (“Kenny Starfighter”) as Hjerson. It will be comprised of four murder cases and broadcast as four films and an eight-episode TV series in the fall of 2021.

When the Nordic entertainment group, one of Scandinavia’s largest media groups, announced last month during the Goteborg Film Festival that it was pulling out of non-scripted content to focus on scripted drama, and film production and distribution, it underscored two market trends in the Nordics: Subscription-based services, whether local or global, are driving the region’s booming drama business, and going forward, the investment into content will be more evenly split between Scandinavia series and movies.
Since Scandinavia is one of the first overseas markets where Netflix and HBO Nordic launched as early as 2012, local streaming services such as Viaplay, CMore and Elisa Viihde reacted fast and stepped up their investment in drama in order to compete. It paid off: Today, unlike in other European regions where local Svod services have either shut down or struggled, the Nordics are home to several powerful local streaming services that are coexisting alongside Netflix and HBO Nordic.
