The first thing that is likely to catch your eye about The Company You Keep, the latest directorial effort from Robert Redford, is the vast amount of star power it contains. I can’t recall having seen so impressive a cast for at least the last several years. Take a look at this list: Robert Redford, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Richard Jenkins, Terrence Howard, Julie Christie, Nick Nolte, Chris Cooper, Brendan Gleeson, Anna Kendrick, and Sam Elliott. These names, most of whom have won or have been nominated for an Academy Award, would be enough to convince most people to give the film a shot, but then again, more details on the film couldn’t hurt.
The plot revolves around a group of ex-radicals known as the “Weather Underground.” A few decades ago, they staged numerous protests and even committed a number of violent acts, including a bank robbery. Years later,...

A former member of the revolutionary militant group the Weather Underground goes on the run after a journalist outs him in The Company You Keep, a political thriller directed by Robert Redford and based on Neil Gordon’s novel. It’s a film that touches on the costs of political commitment, specifically the fervent activism of young college kids in the ’60s who, swept up in the revolutionary moment, took actions that they pay for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, it’s not as thought-provoking, or as political, as it sounds. Since Redford doesn’t have the guts to either condemn or applaud the Weather Underground radicals, The Company You Keep basically boils down to one long, boring chase. There’s a subject here for a good movie, perhaps even a great one, but this isn’t it.

Robert Redford plays an ageing anti-war activist in his latest movie, The Company You Keep – just one more incarnation in an ever-changing image
Robert Redford's new film sees the Hollywood liberal play a craggy radical, hiding away from a criminally subversive past under an assumed name. Once the FBI rumbles him, the agents on his trail spend some time comparing the image of his lined face to that of his much younger, 1970s, moustachioed self.
Cinema audiences across the world have travelled down that same long, ageing trail with Redford too, watching as his luminous youth in the role of Bubber in the 1966 film The Chase was gradually replaced, first by the poised cynicism of The Candidate and then by the stately leading man in Out of Africa or the worn-out sleaze of his Indecent Proposal to Demi Moore. Yet, as a man, Redford's radical zeal remains undimmed.

Robert Redford delivers one last lecture on '60s idealism and passes another baton to Shia Labeouf in "The Company You Keep," an engrossing thriller about the last anti-Vietnam War radicals still underground.
Redford, along with fellow Oscar winners Susan Sarandon, Chris Cooper and Julie Christie, and the cream of the cinema's current crop of character actors -- Brendan Gleeson, Terrence Howard, Nick Nolte, Stanley Tucci and Richard Jenkins -- make this "No Country for Old Radicals" a feast of performance, with many of those illustrious stars sharing scenes with Labeouf, who plays an obsessed newspaper reporter on their trail.
And in this movie, the kid holds his own.
Sarandon plays a former member of "The Struggle" who has laid low for decades, raising kids and harboring guilt. She wants to turn herself in for her part in a bank robbery that got a guard killed some "30 years ago." But...

Los Angeles — Robert Redford does his most compelling work in some time as both actor and director in "The Company You Keep," a tense yet admirably restrained thriller about a fugitive forced out of hiding after 30 years to prove his innocence. Adapted with clarity and intelligence by Lem Dobbs from Neil Gordon's novel, and lent distinguishing heft by its roster of screen veterans, this gripping drama provides an absorbing reflection on the courage and cost of dissent.
Recalling aspects of Sidney Lumet's poignant "Running on Empty" from 1988, but with a more subdued emotional palette, the film opens with vintage-style news footage detailing charges against members of radical antiwar group the Weather Underground in the early 1970s for plotting to blow up buildings in multiple U.S. cities. A second report follows, attributing responsibility to the same group for a Michigan bank robbery during which a security guard was killed.

The thing I love about Robert Redford movies is how insightful and opinionated they are, never existing as just a bland surface experience. I’m not only talking about his directorial efforts with that statement either, I’m talking about anything the man is really involved in. Sure, there are some duds which are blemishes on his illustrious career, but no actor can avoid that, and most other projects he’s worked on are rich with subtext and provide insight on their topics.
The Company You Keep is no different from the better work he’s participated in, offering a thought-provoking take not only on the storied history of The Weather Underground, but the hard-hitting and morally ambiguous world of journalism – which of course sparked my interest.
Following the story of Jim Grant (Robert Redford), we watch as his past as a Weather Underground activist comes back to haunt him,...

It's time, apparently, for the aging ghosts of '60s radicalism to once again take stock of their sins and compromises. In The Big Chill and Running on Empty, during the Reagan '80s, the then–middle-aged revolutionaries' to-do list involved holding down careers and worrying about their kids; now the noble fist-wavers are looking at Social Security and prescriptions of Levator. Once it gets its walkers moving, Robert Redford's The Company You Keep nearly plays like a green-granola-lefty counterpart to The Expendables, a Hollywood Elderhostel reunion crowded with septuagenarian icons looking back on the righteousness and failures of the Nixon–'Nam era with rheumy retirees' eyeballs.

Robert Redford’s The Company You Keep is definitely shaping up to be one of the most promising thrillers of the year. With an all-star cast, headed up by Redford and Shia Labeouf, we’ve got a lot to look forward to when it lands in a few months’ time.

A new, and very lackluster third poster is in for Sony Pictures Classics' The Company You Keep, starring Robert Redford and Shia Labeouf. This a thriller, but there's nothing thrilling about this one image. Don't take that away from the cast quality though - we have Julie Christie, Sam Elliott, Brendan Gleeson, Terrence Howard, Richard Jenkins, Anna Kendrick, Brit Mareling, Stanley Tucci, Nick Nolte, Chris Cooper and Susan Sarandon also on board. Most-impressive. Redford also directs the film written by Lem Dobbs based on the novel by Neil Gordon. The film is rated R and opens April 5th, 2013.

The Company You Keep is an average thriller. It's not entirely exhilarating, but passes the time despite being a little too long at just over two hours. However, forget the thriller aspect for a second, the weirdest bit is the journalism side of the story and its clear hatred for new media. To be fair, I share director Robert Redford's disgust for the hit baiting slam pieces that come from today's media more focused on clicks than integrity and proper sourcing. But, as we watch a young journalist do everything he can to check his sources and get the story straight, the way the narrative plays out it all begins to feel extraordinarily contradictory. Written by Lem Dobbs (The Limey, Dark City), The Company You Keep is an adaptation of Neil Gordon's novel centering on a young journalist's exploration into the identity of a former member of the Weather Underground.

Venice – Robert Redford does his most compelling work in some time as both actor and director in The Company You Keep, a tense yet admirably restrained thriller about a fugitive forced out of hiding after 30 years to prove his innocence. Adapted with clarity and intelligence by Lem Dobbs from Neil Gordon’s novel, and lent distinguishing heft by its roster of screen veterans, this gripping drama provides an absorbing reflection on the courage and cost of dissent. Recalling aspects of Sidney Lumet’s poignant Running on Empty from 1988, but with a more subdued emotional palette, the film opens with

It's almost time for the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival to kick-off next month, and between now and then we'll see plenty of promotional materials for the films making their debut in Canada. Today brings one of the more exciting bits in the form of the first trailer for The Company You Keep, the adaptation of Neil Gordon's novel of the same name from director Robert Redford. The political thriller follows a young journalist (Shia Labeouf) who stumbles upon the story of his career when he uncovers the identity of a wanted ex-radical activist (Redford) who has been underground for five decades. This looks like a great political thriller in the same vein as All the President's Men with a phenomenal ensemble cast. Watch it! Here's the first trailer for Robert Redford's The Company You Keep, unveiled via Tiff: Jim Grant (Robert Redford), a civil rights lawyer and single...

As a director, Robert Redford has repeatedly been drawn to narratives that if not recounting real events, are often inspired by them. As follow-up to his historical drama The Conspirator, which focused on the vengeful aftermath of Lincoln's assassination, Redford offers an adaptation of the Neil Gordon novel The Company You Keep, which uses the 1960s far-left radical group the Weather Underground as the base for a provocative thriller. Set in contemporary America, Shia Labeouf heads a star-studded cast playing Ben Shepard, a journalist who desperately needs a scoop to keep his job. When news breaks that a member of the Weather Underground (Susan Sarandon) who has long been wanted in connection with a bank robbery and murder has been arrested, interest in the group and its lone unaccounted for member is renewed. Chasing the story of what ever happened to fugitive Nicholas Sloan, Shepard pulls strings with an ex...

If there's a fatter address book in Hollywood than Robert Redford's we'd be amazed. The legendary actor, director, festival curator and all-round good guy has put it to good use on The Company You Keep, the first film to show off his talents on both sides of the camera since 2007's Lions For Lambs. A new trailer has popped up online that gives a flavour of the extraordinary ensemble cast he's, er, ensembled. Present and correct in the contemporary-set thriller are Shia Labeouf, Susan Sarandon, Julie Christie, Anna Kendrick, Nick Nolte, Terrence Howard, Stanley Tucci, Chris Cooper, Brendan Gleeson, Stephen Root, Brit Marling, and Sam Elliott. The film returns Redford to a genre he tackled so brilliantly with Alan Pakula and Sydney Pollack in films like All The President's Men and Three Days Of The Condor. Those breathless, politically-charged thrillers, boosting a jolt of Nixon-era paranoia, have stood the test of time.

"The Company You Keep" doesn't have an official U.S. release date just yet, but with an amazing cast and crew and a pair of high-profile festival bows in Venice and Toronto, expect one to get announced shortly. That's something you should be excited about, because the first trailer for "The Company You Keep" looks like a cross between "Enemy of the State" and "The Fugitive."
Directed by Robert Redford, and starring (deep breath) Shia Labeouf, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Brit Marling, Anna Kendrick, Terrence Howard, Brendan Gleeson, Julie Christie, Richard Jenkins, Nick Nolte, Chris Cooper, Sam Elliot and Redford himself, "The Company You Keep" tells the story of a young journalist (Labeouf) who discovers the identity of a former Weather Underground activist (Redford) wanted for the murder of a security guard 30 years earlier. More good news: Lem Dobbs ("The Limey," "Haywire") wrote the script, which is an adaptation of Neil Gordon's novel.
