New Delhi, Sep 5 (Ians) Early-stage Vc firm Unicorn India Ventures (Uiv) on Tuesday announced the first close of its Rs 1,000 crore Fund III. The first close is at Rs 225 crore and final close is expected by March next year.
With the Fund III, Uiv aims to build a portfolio of 25 startups that are focused in the global software-as-a-service (SaaS) and digital platforms.
From the sector’s perspective, the Vc company is looking at newer sectors of climate tech, agritech, spacetech and the semiconductor ecosystem.
“Being the first institutional investors, before doing any investment, we spend considerable time with the founders to understand their vision, team’s capabilities, growth plans and leadership style,” said Bhaskar Majumdar, Managing Partner, Unicorn India Ventures.
“Our focus is to invest in companies that are enablers of India’s digitisation across sectors. We avoid high cash burn businesses like D2C, consumer internet, content businesses,” he added.

After 18 years at BAFTA, Krishnendu Majumdar is having trouble switching off.
It’s been almost two months since the media executive, who recently won a BAFTA for producing the Kate Winslet-led Channel 4 drama “I Am Ruth,” finished his three-year term as chair of the British Academy, handing over the reins to agency boss Sara Putt. But it took a minute, he says, to stop going on high alert every time he clocked a buzzy topic that BAFTA might be asked to comment on.
“You see something online and you think, ‘Oh I wonder how we should respond?’” says Majumdar, known to most in the industry as simply ‘Krish.’ “And then it’s like, ‘No, no. I don’t do that’ … I’m just a member. I’m not on any committees. I’m not a trustee. I don’t speak on their behalf anymore.”

The former Chair of BAFTA has urged writers, actors and studios to “come together to find a fair, equitable solution,” while pointing to improvements required in “hidden areas” of diversity.
Krishnendu Majumdar, who also runs BAFTA-winning I Am Ruth indie Me + You Productions, said he has many friends and colleagues striking in the UK and is aware of many affected productions.
“I want the strike to end,” he said. “There needs to be a coming together of writers, actors and studios to find a fair equitable solution going forwards because it’s costing hundreds of millions of dollars a day.”
Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today, Majumdar, who is ending a three-year term, pointed to BAFTA’s diversity work, which has seen it uproot its nominations process across the last couple of years and support various all-year-round initiatives. He left BAFTA in June and was replaced by Sara Putt.

Lucknow, June 11 (Ians) Doctors in Lucknow have successfully operated upon a woman suffering from hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (Hocm) — a condition in which the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick.
Doctors claimed that for the first time in Lucknow, successful surgery for Hocm was performed.
Hocm is a genetic disorder that affects one in 500 adults, and can cause sudden cardiac arrest, particularly in youth and athletes.
Though Hocm affects both men and women, females tend to be more symptomatic.
The patient, a 28-year-old woman from Kanpur, had a history of difficulty in breathing, recurrent fainting episodes and palpitations. She was diagnosed with severe symptomatic obstructive Hocm, a valve located between the left atrium and left ventricle was leaking, and irregular heartbeat.
Given the severity of her condition, urgent surgical correction was advised.
Cardiothoracic and vascular surgery team of Medanta hospital headed by Dr Gauranga Majumdar, performed the complicated resection, plication and release (Rpr) technique.

“Awards are a mirror to the industry.”
That was the message from Krishnendu Majumdar opening the BAFTA Television Awards in London this evening.
The outgoing BAFTA Chair used his final awards speech after three years in post to push the industry on its ongoing work for representation both on- and off-screen.
“I’m so proud of the journey we’ve been on and the seismic changes BAFTA has made over the last three years,” he said. “That work continues because progression on making this industry more representative, inclusive, and equitable is a collective responsibility. It’s on all of us.
“Awards are a mirror to the industry. They offer a snapshot of a moment in time. They reward excellence and celebrate success, and they also tell us a lot about the current picture of the UK television sector.
“So let’s redouble our efforts. Let’s look again at how...

BAFTA’s bosses have stood by the involvement of juries across key categories of the org’s film awards, but note that annual reviews will continue to interrogate and potentially refine the process.
The British Academy faced scrutiny for the 2022 film awards, where only two nominees in each performance category were the result of votes by the membership, and four were selected by juries, while all six director nominees were selected by a jury. The resulting nominations were refreshingly diverse, but BAFTA was criticized in some circles for not placing more trust in its membership and voting chapters.
In July 2022, BAFTA changed its process again, and the 2023 awards nominations have seen an equal split between voting-based nominees and jury-based nominees in each performance category. Meanwhile, the directing category includes two vote-based nominees and four jury-based nominees.
“The only reason we have juries is purely to ensure all the entries on...
