Kevin Feige and his team had big ambitions when they started the MCU back in 2008. The plan was to introduce key members of the Avengers including Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America in their solo films first to make audiences care about the characters. The solo storylines would ultimately culminate in a crossover film which became The Avengers in 2012.
The original six Avengers in 2012’s The Avengers
The big risk paid off as the MCU’s Avengers team incredibly resonated with audiences. Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, The Hulk, and Hawkeye became the original 6 Avengers. However, director Joss Whedon almost included the Wasp in the film, played by Zooey Deschanel, who was supposed to have a major presence in the film.

The first Avengers film was inarguably a true masterpiece. With its star-studded cast and even more brilliant storyline, casting, and actors’ performances, the Joss Whedon-helmed film was perfection at its peak. But before it was finalized to hold all the elements that it did, the film almost took a different turn; one that could have brought about Zooey Deschanel’s Marvel debut.
2012’s The Avengers.
As surprising as it may seem, filmmaker Whedon almost had Deschanel debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the same role that later went on to Michelle Pfeiffer. And had Scarlett Johansson’s scheduling conflicts for the same persisted, fans just might have seen a different plot in the saga — one that included Deschanel as a young Janet Van Dyne!

While once the industry norm, since the 2010s, Hollywood has notably shifted away from mid-budget productions, at least on the mainstream level, making big-budget productions their priority. And the root cause for it can be tied to the superhero industry, especially the MCU, which had a stranglehold at the box office with nearly all of its productions in the last decade.
However, the genre that suffered the utmost consequences following the rise of superhero productions was comedies, which led Zooey Deschanel to believe her career was dead as a result.

Now that he's no longer directing Avengers: Insert New Name Here(formerly The Kang Dynasty), Shang-Chi's Destin Daniel Cretton is instead adding something else to his schedule. He's now attached to make a live-action film based on the hugely popular Naruto manga.
Lionsgate has had this one in development since at least 2015, with Avi and Ari Arad on board to produce alongside Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves' Jeremy Latcham.
Naruto, in case it has somehow slipped your attention, was created by Masashi Kishimoto. The coming-of-age story focuses on enthusiastic young ninja Naruto Uzumaki who has ambitions to be the leader of his village, but must also deal with possessing the spirit of a nine-tailed demon fox. Who among us, etc, etc…
Originally serialized in print form via Japan's weekly title Shonen Jump between 1999 to 2014, it has become one of the biggest mangas, and has been adapted into a variety of animated series and movies.

Following the huge success of One Piece‘s live-action adaptation by Netflix, it is understandable that fans have the expectation that the upcoming Naruto live-action would also be treated in the same way. However, the idea of adapting a seven-hundred-chapter series into a single movie has been met with some backlash from hardcore Naruto fans.

There is the history that implies the not-so-well track record of live-action adaptations, which is why fans are worried about the upcoming Naruto live-action. But a live-action could also be a successful one if done perfectly by the makers. Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) has been tapped to write and direct Lionsgate’s forthcoming live-action adaptation of the manga classic Naruto, created by Masashi Kishimoto.
Specifics as to Cretton’s take on the material are under wraps.

Masashi Kishimoto's "Naruto" is one of the most popular manga of all time, with 250 million books sold worldwide. Its anime adaptation is no less famous and, when airing on Cartoon Network in the 2000s, helped normalize the medium among American audiences. And yet, it's the only one of the "Big Three" series published in the magazine Weekly Shonen Jump — alongside "One Piece" and "Bleach" — that hasn't made the transition to live-action. Until now.
Lionsgate is officially moving forward with a live-action "Naruto" film. The project had previously been reported on, but it currently has a writer/director: Destin Daniel Cretton, director of the Marvel Studios picture "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings."
In a Lionsgate press release, Cretton said of the project: "It was a true honor to meet Kishimoto-san in Tokyo and hear his expansive vision for his creation. We are very excited to collaborate and...

A live-action Naruto film has been in the works at Lionsgate for the better part of a decade, and now the studio announced that the adaptation of Masashi Kishimoto's hit Shonen Jump manga has a new writer and director. Destin Daniel Cretton—director of Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings —is on board to handle both duties for the production. Kishimoto had the following to say about the announcement, via Variety : “When I heard of Destin’s attachment, it happened to be right after watching a blockbuster action film of his, and I thought he would be the perfect director for ‘Naruto.’ After enjoying his other films and understanding that his forte is in creating solid dramas about people, I became convinced that there is no other director for ‘Naruto.' “In actually meeting Destin, I also found him to be an open-minded director who...

Exclusive: Skydance Sports has closed a deal with Gary Ross to rewrite and direct Old Time Hockey, from an original screenplay written by Kevin Jakubowski. The film will be produced by Skydance Sports and Jeremy Latcham.
The original screenplay is set in the rust belt of Pennsylvania involving a high school hockey rivalry from the mid-’90s that gets re-kindled 25 years later.
Ross is no stranger to uplifting sports movies as he directed and wrote the hit horse racing pic Seabiscuit, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. The four-time Oscar nominee has made a career out of writing and directing hit pics that include Pleasantville, The Hunger Games, and most recently Ocean’s 8 starring Sandra Bullock.

Fifteen years ago this month, Iron Man became a genre-defining hit that launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The anniversary has Marvel Studios founding chairman David Maisel looking to the past and to the future as he plans his next venture.
Maisel recalls that over a weekend in 2003 he came up with the concept of Marvel producing its own movies — films that would combine its characters in one universe. He pitched Marvel on that idea and got hired to oversee its film efforts, working to secure financing for a slate and convincing Marvel to delay licensing more of its characters to other movie studios, ala the way Spider-Man was at Sony and X-Men was at 20th Century Fox.
“Marvel was not what Marvel is now,” Maisel tells The Hollywood Reporter. “No one believed in us for years.”

I hate to upset people, but those who longed to see Tony Stark doing a load of laundry in the 2008 film "Iron Man" will not get their wish.
It seems the scene was filmed, but then cut from the film and left on the cutting room floor. It was never included in any of the film's Blu-ray/DVD special features, and it was never screened outside of editing bays and the rooms where producers review dailies. The "Iron Man" laundry scene is, it would appear, lost to time.
To remind readers, the opening of Jon Favreau's "Iron Man" -- a positively quaint film when compared to the groaning machinations of the Marvel Cinematic Universe it spawned -- was about a hotshot inventor and weapons manufacturer named Tony Stark who was kidnapped by Middle Eastern terrorists. The terrorists, led by the gangster Abu Bakkar (Sayed Badreya), had been stealing Stark...

Tony Stark never struck us as a particularly private guy. After all, his first movie ends with him doing away with the long-established tradition of superhero secret identities by declaring to the press, “I am Iron Man.” Before and since, he had no problem sharing his loves, foibles and passions with the rest of the world.
And yet, Marvel thought there were some parts of Tony Stark that shouldn’t be shared with the rest of the world, even if director Jon Favreau filmed them for the first MCU movie Iron Man. Speaking with ScreenRant about his most recent movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, producer Jeremy Latcham admitted that there are deleted scenes that Marvel still won’t release, even 15 years after the movie hit theaters.

During a new golden age of fantasy films and television shows, "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" somehow managed to stand out from the crowd and deliver something fresh and unique. This is a movie that knows what to take seriously (the characters' motivations) and what not to take so seriously (everything else). The film beautifully captures the chaos, mistakes, selfishness, and comedy of a tabletop RPG session, one with hilarious cameos and a great Chris Pine performance.
"Dungeons & Dragons" is also a surprisingly great-looking movie, with a fantastic mix of VFX and practical effects for the variety of creatures in the film. We have not only essential "Dungeons & Dragons" creatures like, well, a dragon, but there's also a gelatinous cube and more esoteric creatures like the displacer beast, intellect devourer, and a mimic. Dungeons & Dragons series: Drew Crevello joins the party as showrunner of the live-action adaptation
The Dungeons & Dragons series is gaining another party member in Drew Crevello (WeCrashed) as the showrunner of the live-action adaptation for Paramount+. Crevello will work closely with Rawson Marshall Thurber, who wrote the pilot script and will direct the first episode. The eight-episode series is a co-production between eOne and Paramount Pictures, with eOne leading the charge.
According to Deadline’s previous report, “Adapting Dungeons & Dragons for television has been a major focus for eOne under President of Global Television Michael Lombardo following the company’s 2019 acquisition by Hasbro. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor among Thieves is at last here, and as led by Chris Pine with a song in his heart, and a lute in his hands, the film acts as a massive introduction to the Forgotten Realms of early D&d lore for a wider audience. That’s right, the game that was once accused of promoting evil is going mainstream with a feel-good comedy! Which is definitely one valid approach to the material.
Indeed, over the many, many years that Dungeons & Dragons has existed, a vast array of worlds (known to tabletop gamers as “campaign settings”) have presented players with a variety of universes, settings, storytelling techniques, and arguably even “genres.” They can be funny, scary, and often always thrilling. They also represent a rich tapestry from which filmmakers at Paramount Pictures can draw.

Since 2008, Marvel Studios has been the very model of a modern mini studio.
Chief creative officer Kevin Feige and his small stable of executives have reliably delivered an unbroken string of global blockbusters to theaters and, starting in 2021, smash TV shows for Disney+. “I have to like the script,” Pine told The Hollywood Reporter Sunday evening at the film’s Los Angeles premiere about what made him say yes to his role as the lovable, lute-playing bard Edgin. “For me, it was the fact that [Dungeons & Dragons] felt earnest and heartfelt and grounded. It didn’t feel jaded or cynical or meta or postmodern. It just was big-budget, old fashioned moviemaking. The kind of feeling of The Princess Bride and Willow and The NeverEnding Story, and all the stuff that I watched as a kid.”
With a screenplay by Michael Gilio and director duo John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein — and story by Gilio and Chris McKay — Honor Among Thieves is rooted in comedy, unlike some of the darker, more serious fantasy films in recent years. The...

Paramount Pictures has been releasing a steady stream of clips and featurettes to promote their upcoming release Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which is based on the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game franchise and is set to reach theatres on March 31st. (And got solid reviews from those in attendance at its SXSW film festival screening.) Today we have both a clip and a featurette to share with you, and they can be seen at the bottom of this article.
The clip shows off a 3 minute stretch of the film, with the lead characters and some disposable side characters getting chased through a maze by a tricky beast. The featurette discusses the fact that the story of the film pits our heroes against the forces of evil.

“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” stole the hearts of the audience at its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival on March 10, no matter whether or not they’d played the 50-year-old role playing game that shares its title.
The action comedy stars Chris Pine as a rakish bard named Edgin and Michelle Rodriguez as his platonic life-partner, the tough-as-nails warrior, Holga. The two set off on a quest to reunite Edgin with his estranged daughter, Kira (Chloe Coleman), and they wind up working with Xenk (Regé-Jean Page), a valorous paladin; Simon (Justice Smith), a sorcerer with an inferiority complex; and Doric (Sophia Lillis), a no-nonsense shapeshifting druid. Rounding out the cast are Hugh Grant as Forge Fitzwilliam, Edgin and Holga’s untrustworthy former compatriot; and Daisy Head as Sofina, a powerful wizard who is more than she initially seems.

As Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves co-director Jonathan Goldstein put it, “nobody had done [an film adaptation of the game] justice.” But Friday night when it came to the newest big-screen take, Goldstein, his co-director John Francis Daley, Paramount, eOne did as the movie received a rock-concert reception on the opening night of SXSW.
When it comes to the fantasy genre that includes Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings, Goldstein, “there’s not a lot of laughs and there’s not a lot of fun, and that’s what we hoped we did with this film.”

The 2000 live-action film based on the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game franchise didn’t go over very well with audiences, but it did earn the Awfully Good treatment and spawn a couple of sequels (2005’s Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God and 2012’s Dungeons & Dragons 3: The Book of Vile Darkness). South by Southwest is back for another year of the rootin’-est, tootin’-est, most queso-heavy film festival on the planet, as it invades Austin, Texas, alongside the music component of the festival.
The entire experience is now called the South by Southwest Conference and Festivals and takes place in Austin from March 10-18. If you’ve never been, it is an absolute blast, like Sundance but with better weather, better food and nicer people (though without the skiing and snowboarding). And this year’s line-up is no different, featuring splashy Hollywood premieres, hotly tipped indies and a ton of stuff you’ve never, ever heard of.
The entire thing kicks off with a bang – the premiere of Paramount’s hotly anticipated “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” directed and co-written by the “Game Night” team of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley.
