“Scrublands”is a new Stan Originals Australian-produced live-action ‘rural noir’ TV drama series, directed by Greg McLean, based on the novel by Chris Hammer, streaming May 2, 2024 on Sundance Now and AMC+:
“…in an isolated and struggling country town, a charismatic and dedicated priest, ‘Father Byron Swift’ (Jay Ryan) opens fire on his congregation, killing five parishioners.
‘One year later investigative journalist ‘Martin Scarsden’ (Luke Arnold) arrives to write what should be a simple feature story on the anniversary of the tragedy. But when Martin's instincts kick in and he digs beneath the surface, the previously accepted narrative begins to fall apart, and he finds himself in a life and death race to uncover the truth.
“Martin finds the people of ‘Ruversend’ deeply scarred and hostile to journalists, with local bookstore owner ‘Mandy Bond’ (Bella Heathcote), ‘Constable Robbie Haus-Jones’ (Adam Zwar), and widow ‘Fran Landers’ (Victoria Thaine) giving him short shrift.

Title: The Loved Ones Director: Sean Byrne Starring: Xavier Samuel, Robin McLeavy and Victoria Thaine One trend that I’ve noticed with the Australian movies I’ve seen, which are typically horror movies, are that they emphasize the isolation of the environment and the movies all end up with a similar “gritty” feel to them. Whether it be “Wolf Creek” telling the story of the disappearance and murder of a group of backpackers, “The Clinic” giving expected mothers the opportunity to compete to the death in an industrial complex, or “Snowtown” dramatizing the “Australia’s worst serial killer”, who had claimed 11 victims. If these Australian horror movies are known to portray these [ Read More ]...

Chicago – Sean Byrne’s “The Loved Ones” is one of those cinematic curiosities so gleefully depraved and unapologetically looney that it appears to have been conceived in an insane asylum. There is no logical reason why this picture should work at all, and yet it has been made with such conviction that I couldn’t help watching it in a state of slack-jawed awe.
The premise is resoundingly simple: boy meets girl, boys rejects girl, girl kidnaps and tortures boy in the secluded privacy of her home. What’s strange is that the girl, Lola (Robin McLeavy), isn’t given any proper setup. She has only a single line of dialogue before her true nature is revealed, though McLeavy delivers it with such painfully vulnerable sincerity that she somehow manages to establish a fully realized character in a matter of seconds.

Some movies you just can’t recommend enough, and some you see once and can’t believe that they get this much hype. I can think of dozens of films killed by all the positive buzz that turns off the audience and builds up expectations that simply can’t be met. I loved The Cabin In The Woods but I got sick of hearing everyone saying how good it was, especially me. Yea, it was damned good, but it didn’t change cinema or reinvent the wheel.
The Loved Ones (Starring Stars: Xavier Samuel, Robin McLeavy and Victoria Thaine) also isn’t going to change the way we see movies, but I’ll be damned if it didn’t make me stand up and take notice. Shot a few years ago in Australia and slowly released on overseas DVD, this is so much more than the sum of its parts.

"I've had a fascination with cults for a long time and this idea has been swirling around my head for years," actress-turned-writer/director Victoria Thaine tells FilmInk about the genesis behind her short, The Kingdom of Doug, which will hopefully shoot this year. "As an actor and writer, there's a natural curiosity about human behaviour and interaction, and cults are such an extreme example of this.

In Sean Byrne's Australian darkly comedic horror flick The Loved Ones, we see what kind of hell gets unleashed when a "Daddy's Girl" named Lola doesn't get her way after she asks her fellow schoolmate Brent to the prom and he declines.
When Lola has Daddy (John Brampton) capture Brent for her own "special dance", it's up to Holly (Victoria Thaine) - Brent's girlfriend - to get to the bottom of things and rescue her boyfriend before Lola and her power drill go too far.
Over the weekend The Loved Ones finally hit limited Us theaters courtesy of Paramount Pictures and Tugg, which allows fans to vote for screenings of the flick in their respective cities. In Sean Byrne's Australian horror import The Loved Ones, Robin McLeavy plays spoiled "daddy's girl" Lola Stone, who isn't used to not getting her way, especially around prom season.
This year she has her eye on Brent (Xavier Samuel), but he already has a girlfriend named Holly (Victoria Thaine) and very little interest in going to the big dance. When Brent rebuffs Lola, she has her father (John Brumpton) kidnap Brent just so "Princess" can have the prom she's always wanted.
Recently Dread Central had the opportunity to chat with McLeavy about her sociopathic character, the power of female protagonists in the horror genre and more. Check out highlights from our chat with the actress below, and look for The Loved Ones in limited theaters this weekend via Tugg and courtesy of Paramount Pictures.

The Loved Ones is one of those films that has been on the top of everyone's "please release" list. Shot in 2009, this Australian horror flick follows a young woman named Lola who doesn't handle rejection very well. When Brent turns her down for prom, Lola kidnaps Brent and takes him home to daddy - who then helps his little girl torture the kid. The film finally is getting some Stateside distribution. It's a slow roll-out, but a steady one, with midnight screenings June 1st in select cities. We chatted with the charming Victoria Thaine, who plays Holly in the film. Holly is Brent's girlfriend, and Victoria promises she's not sitting at home waiting for her date to show up. Tell me...

A couple years back during SXSW I started hearing some buzz about a horror film called The Loved Ones. Made in Australia back in 2010, the movie chronicled a night in which a psychotic girl and her father kidnap the girl's dream date on prom night. From what I heard about the movie it was twisted, deranged, insane and incredibly screwed up. Now the movie is finally getting sets for its release in the United States and so we have a trailer. From what I can tell, the gossip I heard about the film wasn't wrong. Check out the preview below, courtesy of Paramount Pictures. The story follows Lola (Robin McLeavy), a meek young girl who desperately wants Brent (Xavier Samuel) to take her to the prom. Unfortunately, Brent already has plans to go to the dance with another girl, Holly (Victoria Thaine). Made furious by the embarrassing rejection, Lola hatches...

Some folks may think The Loved Ones is too new a film to place on the list of my favourite Cult films of all time, but the truth is The Loved Ones really does have a cult following – sadly for some rather unfortunate circumstances. The winner of the first ever Midnight Madness Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, it never found a distribution deal, even two years after its world premiere. There are rumours as to why this is the case, but that is not important. What is important is to know that The Loved Ones is one of the best horror films of the last decade. Lucky for me I had the chance to catch the film three times (twice at Tiff, and once at Fantasia), but until some deal is reached, I’m sure...

Psychotic secret admirer has her father kidnap her high school crush and forces him to partake in a series of increasingly torturous situations.
The Loved Ones is a sleek, stylish, exceptionally well made film with stunning camera work and a polished look. The entire cast is solid right down the line, especially Xavier Samuel who is pretty much confined to a chair for most of the film's running time. He has to be able to inject personality into his character without a ton of actual dialogue and to make him sympathetic and enduring. He also has to make it appear as though he is actually being tortured and mutilated. Xavier Samuel pulls this off well. He's appealing and he makes viewers understand the mentality of his troubled character. He turns in...

Sean Byrne director of 'The Loved Ones' may be bringing back the new horror icon Princess(Robin McLeavy) for another night out in the form of a prequel, saying in a interview:
"[the next film] lends itself more to a prequel. I’ve actually got 12 pages of back-story so… watch this space."'The Loved Ones' tells the story of Brent (Xavier Samuel) who has never recovered from the night of the car crash that killed his father; the crash that he was responsible for. His only solace is his loving girlfriend Holly (Victoria Thaine).
But there’s another girl who yearns to comfort Brent, the quietest girl in school Lola (Robin McLeavy), and when he turns down her invitation to the prom he enters a nightmare beyond imagining.

Believe the hype, folks. Sean Byrne's critically acclaimed feature film The Loved Ones (review here) is every bit as good as you have heard. Even better? Word from the director has surfaced about not only what's next, but what's up with a domestic release here in the States.
In an interview with What's Playing Byrne revealed the following: "[the next film] lends itself more to a prequel. I’ve actually got 12 pages of back-story so… watch this space."
As for why The Loved Ones hasn't been released here yet, the powers that be are still sorting out whether or not it will “get a wide release or a small boutique release. As you know, it’s got commercial qualities, but it’s also a very subversive take on the genre… but it will be coming out in theaters one way or the other."
Great news!

A frankly Superb new TV spot called “Horror Princess” has been released for my favourite horror film of 2010 – Aussie horror movie The Loved Ones.
The film – which has been dubbed “Pretty In Pink meets Wolf Creek” – comes from writer/director Sean Byrne and stars Robin McLeavy, Xavier Samuel, Victoria Thaine, Richard Wilson and Jessica McNamee.
Teenager Brent is given over to depression and fits of self-mutilation after being behind the wheel for a car accident that killed his own father. That the accident was not at all Brent’s fault—he swerved to avoid a bloodied and beaten man who stumbled into the path of his car—does not seem to matter. His home, now reduced to just Brent and his mother, is a dry and muted place filled with nothing but guilt and quiet despair. The only bright point in Brent’s life at all is Holly, his beautiful and vibrant girlfriend,...

When the full trailer for Sean Byrne's The Loved Ones - a truly fantastic film deserving of Way more love than it's been getting from distributors - released a while back the lament was that it showed way too much of the film. And rightly so. It was one of the most spoiler heavy trailer in recent memory. But with the film hitting Australian screens November 4th the good folk at Madman have just released the new 'Princess' teaser for the film, focusing on the picture's greatest asset. And this one is just Perfect. Check it out below.
Brent (Xavier Samuel) has never really recovered from the night of his car crash. It's the crash that killed his father, the crash that he was responsible for, and his only solace is his loving girlfriend Holly (Victoria Thaine).

The Loved Ones
Stars: Xavier Samuel, Robin McLeavy, John Brumpton, Victoria Thaine | Written and Directed by Sean Byrne
Described as Pretty in Pink meets Wolf Creek, The Loved Ones follows teenager Brent (Samuel), who’s life is a vicious circle of depression and self-mutilation after being behind the wheel in a car accident that killed his father. The only high point in Brent’s life is his beautiful girlfriend Holly (Haig), the only person with any chance at pulling Brent out of his depression and who is, of course, his date for the end of year prom. However there’s a problem – Brent has also caught the eye of Lola (McLeavy), the awkward school loner.
Now while Lola may fade in to the background at school, Lola is used to getting what she wants at home, and more than willing to employ any means necessary to get it. So when...

The end of year school dance is a difficult time for teenagers and the experience can go many ways. The Loved Ones shows us the pretty unique experiences of two teenage boys on the night of the school dance, one who can’t believe his luck and one who probably thinks he’s in hell.
Brent, played by Xavier Samuel (well known for his turn in a certain vampire franchise), is the one who ends up in hell after being kidnapped by Lola (Robin McLeavy), the girl he turns down after she asks him to the dance. Instead Brent wants to go with his girlfriend, the pretty and sweet Holly (Victoria Thaine). This might...

Aussie horror The Loved Ones is, as I write this, currently showing at the London Film4 FrightFest (hopefully to a packed auditorium – its a brilliant film and one that should go down well at the festival). The film, which has been called “Pretty In Pink meets Wolf Creek”, stars Robin McLeavy as the psychotic Lola and I got a chance to sit down and chat with her about the film earlier today.
How did you feel when you first read the script for The Loved Ones?
I was just really excited about the character, it’s not everyday where you pick up a script and there’s a female character who’s psychologically unhinged and really gets to run the whole show – so I was really excited about that. It is kind of disturbing but it’s also bordering on comedy all the time, on a knifes edge.

Bloody-Disgusting have posted two new clips from the upcoming low-budget horror film, The Loved Ones.
The two clips come after the official trailer, which you can view here.
The Loved Ones has been featured at various festivals for almost a year now, including slots at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and this month’s FrightFest in London, where it’s attracted a lot of praise from critics and audience members alike.
The film has been directed by Sean Byrne and features performances from Xavier Samuel, Jessica McNamee, Robin McLeavy, Victoria Thaine, Richard Wilson and John Brumpton.
Synopsis: In order to avoid a ghostly figure in the road, high school senior Brent Mitchell (Samuel) wraps his car around a tree, killing his father. Constantly confronted by his mother’s emotional collapse after the accident, Brent escapes into a marijuana fueled world of loud metal music to block the pain and guilt.

This might seem understandable but Lola is not the kind of girl who takes rejection well and with the help of her father Eric (John Brumpton) she kidnaps Brent and the the father-daughter pair take him home and begin to torture him.
