Screen Australia has invested $275,000 in funding to support the development of 10 feature film projects, it was announced today.
The money will be used toward the development of films including a new feature from Balibo director Robert Connolly and John Polson's mysteriously titled 'Sydney Project.'
Connolly is attached to write, direct and co-produce Paper Planes, the story of a young boy with such a love flight, that he is compelled to compete in the world paper plane championships.
Details surrounding Tropfest creator John Polson's Sydney project are few. When announced last June, it was said to be a collection of 12 short films set in each month of the year that paid tribute to the city.
Other films that have received funding include Kingdom Come, an action thriller to be directed by Marc Furmie and One White Crow, from writer/director Catriona McKenzie.

Once there was a princess condemned by an evil fairy godmother to sleep for a hundred years. All that could wake her was the kiss of a prince strong and brave enough to enter the enchanted palace.
Julia Leigh’s version of Sleeping Beauty – a modern and controversial rendering of the tale – opens in cinemas nationally today.
“She’s not a traditional heroine that we walk every step of the way with,” explains Margaret Pomeranz at Sydney Film Festival’s Q&A session with Leigh and mentor Jane Campion. “It’s challenging to enter her world and follow her in it. You either like the mystery or feel frustrated that it doesn’t give an answer.”

Day three and Extreme Cannes has kicked in, a poster in the Marche is advertising a 3D porn film called Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy. . . We go bouncing around the Cannes Marche, along the endless runways and past the endless stalls. The stalls are selling Space Milkshake, Delhi Safari, Pound of Flesh and a film about a band of bikini-clad kung-fu vixens who form a beach volleyball team. It transpires that the Cannes Marche is planned, very deliberately, like a casino or the Hotel California. You can check out any time you like but you can never leave the walkways lead us round in circles. Come sundown its time to retire to a street corner bar for a drink. There are three of us at the table, frazzled and sweaty, sipping our wine and staring at the TV on the wall. The TV news show is being broadcast live from Cannes,...

Screen Australia's "Sleeping Beauty" has been previewed in its first red band trailer. The preview features Emily Browning who is doing provocative things, including flashing her thighs to a man in a pub. She is also seen almost naked in the beginning of the video.
Coming from director Julia Leigh, this "Sleeping Beauty" offers a bit different story from the original fairy tale. The movie tells a story of a haunting erotic fairy tale about Browning's Lucy, a student who drifts into prostitution and finds her niche as a woman who sleeps, drugged, in a "Sleeping Beauty chamber" while men do to her what she can't remember the next morning.
In addition to Browning, Michael Dorman, Mirrah Foulkes, Rachael Blake, and Hugh Keays-Byrne take other roles for the drama film. Produced by Jessica Brentnall, the movie is expected to hit theaters across the nation later this year.

Julia Leigh’s Sleeping Beauty has been selected for Competition at next month’s Cannes Film Festival, and Ivan Sen’s Toomelah will be part of the Un Certain Regard program.
“I wanted to make a film where the audience responds with ‘did I really see that?’ and ‘did I really hear that?’ and ‘can such a thing really exist’? A response of intense wonder rather than shock. I’m deeply grateful to be participating in a festival which has long shaped my love of cinema,” said Leigh.
