The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced the 145 scores eligible in the Best Original Score category, includeing work from “Jackie” and “La La Land.” The latter film, a musical directed by “Whiplash” helmer Damien Chazelle, picked up the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s award for Best Music earlier this month; “Jackie” was the category’s runner-up. Notably absent, meanwhile, are “Arrival” (which just landed a Golden Globe nod), “Manchester by the Sea” and “Silence.”

Keeping Up With The Joneses is your garden-variety suburban spy comedy, and while that might not sound “garden-variety,” try acting surprised even once during Greg Mottola’s new comedy. Admittedly, it’s not the most humorless cul-de-sac thriller (without the thrills), it’s just incredibly unmemorable like so many mainstream jokers of late. It’s not as destructively devious as Mr. And Mrs. Smith, nor is it witty enough to exploit squeaky-clean parents who turn into unexpected secret agents. A nice guy plays overly nice, his nosy wife snoops excessively and the new perfect neighbors turn out to be exactly who they aren’t – so, again, it’s just like almost every other espionage comedy you’ve ever seen.
Jeff (Zach Galifianakis) and Karen Gaffney (Isla Fisher) are your average white-picket-fence parents. Their wallets burst at the seams with cheesy pictures, and nothing sounds better than a night full of...

Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.
First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). It’s true that films like The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Star Trek Into Darkness had outstanding effects as well, but nothing even came close to the amazing,...

A week and a half ago, I told you the Human Target: Season 1 soundtrack was on its way. Now I have a copy in my hands, so I can share with you just how awesome this three-disc set is. As in, it may have taken up permanent residence in my stereo’s multi-disc changer.
If you’re reading this review, you’re probably familiar with the high-adventure feel that is such a big part of what makes Human Target great. That was encapsulated by Bear McCreary’s Emmy-nominated main title theme and equally amazing orchestral score. No offense to Tim Jones, but no amount of needle drops are going to compare to what’s on these three discs. As much as I love pop music, there is zero comparison between a pop song and the immense sound of an orchestra.
I have an immense amount of respect for composers and musicians,...

Sy: The last Aliens game released was ‘Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem’ following the motion picture, how does the new game follow in the Avp timeline? Tj: Aliens vs Predator is set very much in the Alien(s) universe established by Ridley Scott and James Cameron. That means it’s set in the far future (30 years subsequent to Alien 3, to be precise) and the human element is represented by the Colonial Marines and the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. With today's release of Aliens Vs. Predator, Rebellion Games completes a decade-long journey. Designer Tim Jones reveals the ups and downs of bringing the established film franchise back to life.
For the games industry, sequels and franchise spinoffs are the standard modus operandi--even more so than Hollywood. British company Rebellion Games, for example, has thrived by making videos games based on established game franchises (Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Lone Wolf for PlayStation 1) or film franchises (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix for PlayStation Portable). But it was Avp that put them on the map--and, in a twist of the usual order, the game inspired the cinematic sequel.
"Director Paul Anderson has cited us specifically as one of the reasons he made the Avp movie," says Aliens Vs. Predator designer Tim Jones. "It was a thrill."

We’ve known for a while now that an Aliens vs. Predator demo was on it’s way, but now we have the official word that it will hit consoles this Thursday, February 4th. The demo will be available for download through Xbla, Psn and Steam.
The date was apparently unearthed via an Xbox Live Spotlight advertisement, which has now been mysteriously taken down. But don’t worry, the date has since been confirmed by a number of sources including Graeme Boyd – Xbox Community Manager in the UK.
There has been no word on what the demo will include, although Rebellion’s Tim Jones hinted that it may feature a multiplayer component. Speaking in a interview to Game Trailers he said:
“There will be a demo coming very soon, which hopefully you will be able to enjoy online.”

We love our buzz words in the digital world. There was 'social media' and 'microblogging' and 'user generated content' and 'engagement' and 'web 2.0' (which paved way to the 2.0 suffix attached to everything) and 'the cloud'… and now there’s 'branded entertainment.' The thing is, branded entertainment is nothing new. Over 50 years ago, those crafty soap companies figured out that to get in front of women to peddle their household products, they’d need to wrap their advertising around some meaningful content. And so was born the soap opera. To help crystallize this concept, we reached out to three pioneers who are helping to shape branded experiences that are as entertaining as they are effective. The four of us will give you our definitions of the various forms of branded entertainment in a roundtable discussion, along with our visions for the future of the space. Roundtable Participants: Justine Bateman – Partner,...

It's an interesting week for comics with movie/television tie-ins, with a lot of fan-favorite properties in the mix—especially for science-fiction fans! Here's what we're adding to our pull list for August 12, 2009:
"Star Trek: Nero" #1 (Idw Publishing): Remember how Romulan villain Nero (played by Eric Bana) was supposed to have been waiting 25 years to catch Spock after getting caught in that crazy time-bending portal? What was he doing all that time? Well, if that plot element from the recent "Star Trek" movie has been keeping you up at night, you can sleep safely knowing that Idw is kicking off a new series this week that chronicles Nero's off-camera machinations.
Written by Mike Johnson and Tim Jones, with art and covers by David Messina, "Nero" follows in the footsteps of Idw's previous, well-received "Star Trek" titles that not only earned kudos from comics fans, but from the Trek faithful,...

Rebellion turned the first-person shooter genre on its head in 1994 with the Atari Jaguar-exclusive Alien vs Predator. With its emphasis on atmosphere and strategy, the title struck a chord with gamers and helped to establish the crossover franchise as the force it is today. The game's success led to the studio revisiting the series with 1999's Aliens versus Predator, further expanding the concept and garnering much critical acclaim. Early next year, the developer will bring the intergalactic conflict to the current generation console front with an all-new AvP. Digital Spy caught up with Rebellion's head of art and design Tim Jones to find out more. What have you learned from way the last AvP was received, and how have you put this into practice with the new game?

With any film comes an online industry of obsessive analysis by fans - and the new Star Trek is no exception, having been at the the centre of the usual nitpicking and plothole accusations.
Issues raised in debate have included the depth of characterisation for the villain Nero and also the film's plot device, the mysterious 'red matter' that can create black holes.
Well, if you want more answers, the Star Trek Countdown prequel comic book series from Titan Books and Idw Publishing is just the thing for you.
The four issues are now collected into one graphic novel, with a Rrp of £9.99 (though mine was on sale at a reduced price).
Writers Mike Johnson and Tim Jones, and artist David Messina, have worked with the Star Trek movie screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman to create a backstory leading up to the events in the new film.

Ain’t It Cool News has their fingers on a new “internet trailer” for director J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek, opening in theaters on May 8th. The internet version is slightly different from the recent trailer that was released earlier this month and includes the main ingredient everyone hoped to see and didn’t. You can watch it Here, and, if you’re rad, in 780p - or, if you’re awesome, in 1080p. In other Trek news, First Showing reports that the film will open simultaneously in IMAX on the 8th of May. While not shot with IMAX cameras, the film will be converted to 70mm for projection on IMAX screens, says the site.
