“Nineteen” is a power ballad of the highest order, complete with a saxophone solo and the complex nostalgia that can still strike years after a broken heart: “Can I be honest?,” Eva Hendricks sings. “Push it all down, but I want you/C’mon honey break my heart/I could run forever but I won’t get far.”

Members of Led Zeppelin helped create Donovan’s “Hurdy Gurdy Man” in the studio. The tune paved the way for a lot of the band’s later work. Donovan himself argued that Jimmy Page’s contributions to “Hurdy Gurdy Man” changed rock music.
Why Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page worked on Donovan’s ‘Hurdy Gurdy Man’
Donovan is a singer known for two types of songs: folk tunes and psychedelic experiments. His folk tunes include “Catch the Wind,” “Colors,” and “There Is a Mountain,” while his psychedelic jams include “Sunshine Superman,” “Atlantis,” and “Mellow Yellow.” “Hurdy Gurdy Man,” an early heavy metal song, was an uncharacteristic release for him. It sounds the way it does thanks to help from members of Led Zeppelin.
During a 2008 interview with Uncut, Donovan discussed the origin of “Hurdy Gurdy Man.” “Many people have said over the years how important that session of John Paul Jones,...

The last time Tim Commerford stood in front of a large audience, Rage Against the Machine were wrapping up their truncated 2022 reunion tour with a five-night stand at New York’s Madison Square Garden. In the 18 months since that show, the Rage bassist has gone off the grid, and we mean that in a very literal sense. He now lives in a dirt road, mountaintop California house (he doesn’t want us to specify the location) that is removed from the electric grid. He powers everything via solar panels, and...

Heartbreak was inevitable for Mackenzie.
She's finally thrown herself back into the dating pool, only for her new potential boyfriend to be Holly's no-good ex. And to make matters worse, Ed took off with Mackenzie's wedding ring -- her only tangible reminder of Hendrix.
Mackenzie's grief surfaced on Neighbours during the week of 10-23-23; she wasn't the only one. Nell talked about Sonya's death in therapy, while Reece finally shared her secret with Byron (and viewers.) What a week!
The Ed reveal didn't go exactly as expected, but it was almost perfect.

A version of this response appeared on the Black Rock Coalition’s website.
When Rolling Stone co-founder Jann Wenner made offensive comments in The New York Times about women and Black artists, the Black Rock Coalition, which has battled stereotypes and musical categorizations about what rock is “supposed to be” since 1985, felt obligated to speak out and condemn his misogynistic and racist statements. While we were among many organizations and individuals to call out Wenner, he also had a number of supporters, citing his contributions to popular culture and to the world of music journalism.

Jack Black celebrated the 100 birthday of Tom Morello’s mom Mary with the gift of song. The actor-musician joined a band of ridiculously talented 12 and 13 year olds to perform the Ozzy Osbourne classic “Mr. Crowley” during a birthday party for the centenarian.
Tom shared video of the performance on his Instagram account on Tuesday (October 3rd), writing, “Mary Morello’s 100th bday celebration featured a stirring rendition of @ozzyosbourne & #RandyRhoads ‘Mr. Crowley’ performed by @jackblack and a kick ass band of 12 & 13 year olds! Mary was pleased!”
Black performing an Ozzy song about the notorious British occultist Aleister Crowley for the 100th birthday of the mother of Rage Against the Machine’s guitarist is truly a wild thought, but then again, we wouldn’t expect anything less from the Tenacious D singer.

When it comes to classic rock musicians hitting No. 1 on the charts, no group outclasses The Beatles. The Fab Four had 20 No. 1 hits in the United States. For all their popularity, The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, and Michael Jackson don’t even come close. K-Pop superstars BTS matched The Beatles by having six No. 1 songs in a year, but they’re still writing their legacy. Several legendary classic rock bands never had a No. 1 hit on the Billboard singles chart. Here are 10 of them.

Jimi Hendrix packed a lot of living into his short life. Although he was only 27 years old when he died, he helped shape the entire classic rock genre. Hendrix was also quite the character when he was offstage. In fact, some of his past comments are still making people laugh to this day.
Jimi Hendrix’s impressive career
Hendrix, who learned to play the guitar as a teenager, delighted audiences worldwide in the 1960s with his innovative electric guitar playing, as Biography reports. His first single, “Hey Joe,” was instantly popular in Britain, and his 1967 tour to promote his first album, “Are you Experienced?,” won over huge crowds.
One of the highlights of Hendrix’s career happened at the infamous Woodstock festival in 1969, when he performed “The Star-Spangled Banner.” One journalist once wrote that Hendrix “could get more out of an electric guitar than anyone else,” calling him “the ultimate guitar player.

Best-selling horror author Grady Hendrix’s latest novel, How to Sell a Haunted House, was released earlier this year, and an adaptation is already on the way.
Legendary Entertainment won movie rights, per Variety, and tapped Coming Home in the Dark filmmaker James Ashcroft to helm the adaptation.
If that’s not intriguing enough, Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures will produce the film with Hendrix (My Best Friend’s Exorcism) and Adam Goldworm’s Aperture Entertainment. Romel Adam and Jose Cañas will oversee for Ghost House.

Legendary Entertainment has won the movie rights to Grady Hendrix’s runaway bestseller “How to Sell a Haunted House.”
The studio behind “Dune” took the novel over several bids. The book received critical acclaim and an instant following thanks to its dynamic storytelling — pulling off genuine fright with its evil puppet antagonist, and a deeply emotional story about the horrors of family.
New Zealand-based Māori filmmaker James Ashcroft is attached to direct the project. Ashcroft made his mark in the indie genre space with the bleak “Coming Home in the Dark,” which premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and was later acquired by Netflix. The Beatles were excellent musicians, but none of them had the guitar skills of Jimi Hendrix. The “Purple Haze” singer became known worldwide for his unprecedented guitar playing, and it caught the attention of The Beatles. Paul McCartney loved the sound Jimi Hendrix could create and wanted to bring it to a Beatles song written by George Harrison.

George Harrison and The Beatles mainly remained apolitical with their music. However, Harrison felt he had to speak out after seeing how much of his earnings were being taken out due to taxes. Celebrity couples are beloved amongst fans, but perhaps not as much as celebrity best friendships. And among those friendships, few are as revered as Lisa Ann Walter’s friendship with her “Parent Trap” co-star Elaine Hendrix — but that relationship doesn’t mean you’ll see Hendrix on “Abbott Elementary.”
Walter, of course, stars on the ABC comedy as Melissa Schemmenti, one of Abbott’s best, but a little bit terrifying, teachers. But, before there was “Abbott Elementary,” there was the 1998 version of “The Parent Trap,” in which Walter starred as Chessy, the live-in nanny and housekeeper for Hallie.
It was on that film that she met Elaine Hendrix, who starred as Meredith Blake, and the two became fast friends. Over the years, their friendship is one that’s endured, and Hendrix even accompanied Walter to this year’s SAG Awards. So, it’s hard not to wonder if she might pop up on “Abbott Elementary.

At the start of 2023, Nick Cave got angry. Angry at artificial intelligence for making a mockery of his career. Songwriting has long been associated with the inherent ability to be soulful. But now one Google search will throw up endless AI capable of making lyricism universal: Audoir for song lyrics and poetry, Jarvis for banishing writer’s block, and ChatGPT for anything, everything and more. To put it plainly, the 65-year-old singer had had enough of being simulated.
“With all the love and respect in the world, the track is bulls*** and a grotesque mockery of what it is to be human,” he responded in a blog post to a fan who’d sent him song lyrics “in the style of Nick Cave”, generated by ChatGPT.

Jimi Hendrix famously covered Bob Dylan’s song “All Along the Watchtower” and spoke openly about how much he admired the other musician. Despite this, Hendrix said he didn’t take any inspiration from Dylan’s music. He explained why he felt this way despite holding Dylan in such high regard.

In 1968, Hendrix began to record a cover of Dylan’s song “All Along the Watchtower.” He had previously covered “Like a Rolling Stone,” but “All Along the Watchtower” would become his most well-known Dylan cover. Dylan’s manager, Albert Grossman, provided other artists with Dylan tapes to encourage them to cover the songs.

Once Jimmy Page formed Led Zeppelin in 1968, the band worked almost constantly for several years. They connected with their fans almost immediately — an early show convinced singer Robert Plant the band might mean something — and gave them plenty of material. Several albums and hundreds of concerts over Zep’s first three years together built their reputation. But missing the chance to see another legendary guitarist — Jimi Hendrix — perform is something Page regrets about Led Zeppelin’s early days.

Classic rock bands don’t get any more iconic than The Beatles. The band’s catalog is arguably unmatched, and their album sales and cultural impact are second to none. Still, bandmates Paul McCartney and George Harrison were taken by surprise when Jimi Hendrix covered one of The Beatles’ songs just a few days after its initial release. Here’s what we know about it.
Why members of The Beatles admired Jimi Hendrix
Hendrix only released a few studio albums during his career. But his musical mastery was apparent to all. Certainly at the time, Hendrix made an impact. However, if there was ever any doubt about his legacy, the decades since his tragic death at age 27 in 1970 definitely clear that up. Today, Hendrix is considered one of the best musicians in history.
According to BeatlesStory, The Beatles were already great admirers of Hendrix by 1967, the year his first album released.

Classic rock fans are always interested to learn where their favorite musicians found the inspiration to make their own music. After all, art of all kinds is cyclical, with each subsequent generation absorbing and learning from what came before. So it’s fascinating to consider the legacy of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who inspired Jimi Hendrix — considered one of the best guitarists of all time — to pursue music.
Sister Rosetta Tharpe inspired many early rock and roll stars, including Jimi Hendrix
Among his influences, Hendrix counted Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Widely considered the “Godmother of Rock and Roll,” Tharpe gained mainstream attention in the 1930s and 1940s with her gospel music. In particular, her music attracted attention for incorporating electric guitar. Her signature blend of spiritual and secular techniques set Tharpe apart from her peers.
From childhood and into her adult life, Tharpe devoted her life to music. She released her first album,...

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are The Rolling Stones’ most famous members. As much as both have been integral to guiding the band through six decades together, Jagger’s forward-facing enthusiasm makes him appear to be the leader. Richards, who showed his wild side as a boy scout, played the riffs and then lived the rock star lifestyle. But only for so long. Richards’ five-word motto helped him take control of the Stones’ Emotional Rescue sessions.

When he made his first feature, Gal Young ‘Un, in 1979, director Victor Nuñez was a pioneer in an American independent film movement still in its early stages. Over the next several decades, Nuñez continued to work on personal projects on his home turf of northern Florida. He worked rewardingly with gifted actors like Ed Harris in A Flash of Green and launched Ashley Judd’s acting career with Ruby in Paradise in 1993. Peter Fonda earned his only Oscar nomination as an actor when he starred in Nuñez’s Ulee’s Gold in 1997.
But Nuñez has not directed a film in over a decade. He returns to the screen with Rachel Hendrix and helps to revitalize the acting career of Lori Singer, still best known for her starring role opposite Kevin Bacon in 1984’s Footloose. Singer, also an accomplished classical musician, had a few other notable acting credits, in Alan Rudolph’s...

Jimi Hendrix became a rock legend in the 1960s thanks to his undeniable guitar skills. Despite his lasting impact on music over half a century after his death, Hendrix’s own career in the spotlight was actually short-lived.
Jimi Hendrix | Walter Iooss Jr./Getty Images Jimi Hendrix’s rise to fame
Jimi Hendrix’s love of music was apparent from an early age. He started out playing an acoustic guitar before creating his own electric guitar, and eventually got his first real electric guitar, naming it after his girlfriend at the time and painting her name on it. Hendrix was a music fan from a young age, watching artists like Little Richard perform however he could.
Hendrix’s affinity for guitar interfered with his duties when he was in the military, eventually leading to his honorable discharge from the army. While in the service, he formed a band called The...

Guitar maestro Jeff Beck played alongside many notable musicians during his life. Jimi Hendrix wasn’t one of them. Beck’s brand of classic rock saw him briefly share the Yardbirds with Jimmy Page, add Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood to his namesake band, and form a surprising friendship with Johnny Depp. Beck called Hendrix trouble and then witnessed him “put the final nail” in his coffin as the dominant guitar god of the era after Hendrix arrived in England.

With The Beatles bending musical norms, the Yardbirds twisting American blues into something psychedelic, and The Rolling Stones coming into their own, the English music scene in the mid-1960s was a cauldron of creation.
Then Jimi Hendrix entered the picture and blew up the frame.

The annals of rock & roll folklore are full of tough mothers, evil mothers, motorcycle mamas, mothers of invention. Although stars love to get sentimental over their mamas, there’s something special about the fearsome, badass maternal figures of rock & roll — whether it’s LL Cool J’s mama telling him to knock you out, or Rosalita’s mama chasing Bruce Springsteen off the porch with a broom. So here’s a few of our favorite mom songs.
